Hybrid All Hands Meeting on May 6

The final All Hands Meeting of the 2020-21 year will be Thursday, May 6 at 9 a.m. The meeting will be held as a hybrid event, both in Hoversten Chapel and via Zoom. While we normally hold a longer, strategy-focused All-Hands Planning Summit at the end of the year, we have decided to move our summit conversation to the fall and use this opportunity to report on the significant accomplishments of the 2020-21 academic year.

Faculty and staff can email events@augsburg.edu to reserve an in-person spot. Space will be limited; the maximum capacity of the chapel under current structured event guidelines is 58. Religious diversity is an incredibly important part of American public life. Controversies regarding religion and business are regularly in both the press and the courts and more Americans say that they encounter religious diversity at work than in any other sphere of their life (PRRI, 2019). However, religion is often left out of the corporate diversity conversation. Diverse identities and perspectives on a team can lead to greater outcomes or can lead to misunderstanding and conflict. It is only when diverse identities are engaged, and team members have opportunities to intentionally learn about one another, that the potential strength of workplace diversity is unlocked. Developing a company culture that proactively engages religious diversity can open doors to greater employee productivity, enhanced client satisfaction, and even new business prospects. Join IFYC to explore why engaging religion matters in the workplace, workshop challenging scenarios, and identify your interfaith skillset.

With the trend toward a more diverse workforce continuing, so are the ways we conduct business. In the past, most U.S. businesses functioned primarily within our borders. Today, globalization is proving to be a huge game changer for many companies, big and small. With globalization and increased immigration, the potential for misunderstandings in the workplace is really high. First, language differences may lead to miscommunication and misinterpretation. Second you fail to take into account significant cultural differences. For example, during a performance review, you provide constructive criticism to an employee with the intent of helping him improve his performance. Later on you learn that he quit his job because of the shame and loss of face your feedback caused. In this interactive Webinar, you will understand the impact of cultural differences in the workplace and learn strategies to bridge those differences effectively.

Applications are Now Open for the 2021-22 AugSTEM Scholars Program

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2021 (graduating by December ‘23)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Thursday, May 13 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Tuesday, May 25 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

This event will center on finding, celebrating and sustaining wellness and joy as Black men in 2021 after a challenging 2020 and will feature a special keynote address, Brotherhood Talking Circles, and interactive workshop. The Brotherhood Talking Circles portion of the event is limited to only students and facilitators.

The Holistic Health Series will be a monthly session facilitated by CWC and the Pan-Afrikan Center. For 60 minutes, students will come together on zoom to practice a plethora of grounding activities. Covid-19 and the historical racial unrest have increased anxiety, isolation, depression, unstable housing and employment, and more. CWC and the Pan-Afrikan Center will provide culturally competent sessions that will allow people to practice mindfulness through music, poetry, movement, relationship building, and more. After each session, the facilitators will ask for feedback and suggestions to increase the participants’ quality and enjoyment of Holistic Health Series.

Fall River Semester Program Application Deadline Approaching

Challenge yourself, take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and gain valuable real-world skills for navigating the complexities of the 21st Century. This coming September, the next group of students, faculty, and staff will embark from Lake Itasca to begin their hundred-day expedition by canoe and van down the length of the Mississippi River. Students take courses in environmental justice, climate change, politics in the American heartland, outdoor leadership, and undertake individual research projects. In addition to spending time in St. Louis, Memphis, and New Orleans, the group paddles and camps in the “Wild Miles” on the Lower Mississippi, the heavily industrialized “Chemical Corridor,” and finishes by paddling to the Gulf of Mexico, 2,345 river miles from the headwaters. Students interested in joining the program are invited to apply through the Augsburg Study Away web portal. Deadline for applying is March 15.

Auggie Basics Housing – Applications Now Open

As part of the Augsburg University Equity Proposal, the Auggie Basics – Housing initiative is designed to address the needs of students who experience housing instability. The purpose of the program is to provide a bridge for students whose housing is not stable as they seek to identify a permanent solution.

Students accepted into the Auggie Basics Program will live on campus without cost to the student. Regardless of when students enter the program, the housing commitment will cover the full academic year if needed. If the student secures permanent housing elsewhere, they will be released from the program and the spot will be offered to another student. Summer housing may be an option. Students must reapply each academic year. Being chosen for the Auggie Basics program one year does not guarantee participation in future years.

Alternative Spring Break

Campus Ministry invites students to participate in an Alternative Spring Break experience March 15-19, 2021, offering the students an opportunity to look deeper at justice issues in the Twin Cities and surrounding area and engage in meaningful, relationship-centered volunteer work.
The justice issues will be examined through several experiences in the Twin Cities and reflection and sharing in order for participants to process their experience communally and individually. These experiences include:
Onsite work with Health Commons at Central Lutheran Church and in the Cedar Riverside clinic.
A presentation and activities by the University of MN Mapping Prejudice project, exploring housing inequity due to racial disparities.
A presentation and activities by the Lutheran Social Service of MN (LSS-MN) Advocacy team, providing practical and current information on ways to be advocates.
Activities are subject to change due to COVID-19 protocols.
This ASB has been approved to count as an Augsburg Experience. Please indicate on the registration form if you would like that option. All activities are subject to change depending on Covid-19 restrictions.

While at Augsburg she was active in MSA and was an Interfaith Scholar and now is a second year student at University of Minnesota Medical School. Aisha will explore ethical questions raised by the advances in science such as organ donation and stem cell research. Awareness of these ethical questions can create strong leaders in scientific and other fields while holding deep connection to their faith. Following Aisha’s presentation, two Augsburg students will offer their responses and there will be time for questions from the audience.

Want to engage in leadership, service, and learning to make a difference at Augsburg and in the wider community?
Apply to be in one of Augsburg’s three Public Leadership Scholar Programs: Christensen Scholars, Interfaith Scholars, or Sabo Scholars.
In these programs, you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in the Christian tradition, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive a $2,000 scholarship.

While at Augsburg she was active in MSA and was an Interfaith Scholar and now is a second year student at University of Minnesota Medical School. Aisha will explore ethical questions raised by the advances in science such as organ donation and stem cell research. Awareness of these ethical questions can create strong leaders in scientific and other fields while holding deep connection to their faith. Following Aisha’s presentation, two Augsburg students will offer their responses and there will be time for questions from the audience.

Wilderness Canoe Base & Augsburg University LGBTQIA+ Services will be partnering to offer a pilot program to 7 current LGBTQIA+ students of Augsburg University. The program is designed to provide intentional community for LGBTQIA+ students to experience nature – and specifically the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA.)

When thinking about communities and identities safe and welcome to share outdoor spaces, LGBTQIA+ communities are often not included in that equation. This pilot program is offering the opportunity for LGBTQIA+ students to experience and engage in learning that doesn’t involve a ‘classroom.’ Because queer and trans+ communities haven’t historically been welcome in outdoor spaces, to engage in learning that doesn’t uphold the lens of ‘traditional education,’ this program is offering queer ways of knowing.

Being modeled from adrienne mareen brown’s book, Emergent Strategy, this program looks to biomimicry to better understand how queer movement can model nature to find ways of cooperative and collective action – resulting in queer liberation.

This trip will be led by Director, LGBTQIA+ Services – Max Poessnecker & an LGBTQIA+ identified Wilderness Canoe Base staff member. This trip requires ZERO experience in the outdoors, canoeing, or BWCA. Part of the goals of this pilot program are to create exposure, access, and dismantle gatekeeping to outdoor spaces upheld by racism, queerphobia, and capitalism.

Auggie Basics Housing – Applications Now Open

As part of the Augsburg University Equity Proposal, the Auggie Basics – Housing initiative is designed to address the needs of students who experience housing instability. The purpose of the program is to provide a bridge for students whose housing is not stable as they seek to identify a permanent solution.

Students accepted into the Auggie Basics Program will live on campus without cost to the student. Regardless of when students enter the program, the housing commitment will cover the full academic year if needed. If the student secures permanent housing elsewhere, they will be released from the program and the spot will be offered to another student. Summer housing may be an option. Students must reapply each academic year. Being chosen for the Auggie Basics program one year does not guarantee participation in future years.

Interested in Grad School? Apply to TRIO McNair Scholars Program

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2021 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2022 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2022. We are particularly looking for students in STEM fields that are interested in pursuing doctoral degrees, but we will consider all majors EXCEPT most professional fields (including business, pre-law, pre-health).

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000+) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2022.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred).

10th Annual Kente Summit for Collegiate Black Men: The Prequel

On behalf of the Kente Summit Planning Committee, registration for the 2020-21 10th Annual Kente Summit for Collegiate Black Men is now open. This event will center on finding, celebrating and sustaining wellness and joy as Black men in 2021 after a challenging 2020 and will feature a special keynote address, Brotherhood Talking Circles, and interactive workshop. The Brotherhood Talking Circles portion of the event is limited to only students and facilitators.

Black History Month: Self-Love

We are excited to announce the first ever in-person event for ESA (Ethiopian Student Association). On February 26, 2021, we will be celebrating Black History Month, and in that we wanted to provide a space where we can navigate through our experiences with self-love and self-appreciation. You will have the opportunity to check-in with yourselves and bring out your creative side.

We will be having a lot of fun activities including but not limited to face mask decorating, giveaways and so much more. More details on the event will be announced in the days to come. Keep a lookout for that!

The Minnesota COVID-19 Vaccine Connector is a tool that helps Minnesotans find out when, where, and how to get a COVID-19 vaccine. After you fill out a simple form, the Vaccine Connector will: alert you when you are eligible to receive a vaccine; connect you to resources to schedule a vaccine appointment; and notify you if there are vaccine opportunities in your area. You also may still work through your healthcare providers to try to get access to vaccines, as they become available.

Gay in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area

Wilderness Canoe Base & Augsburg University LGBTQIA+ Services will be partnering to offer a pilot program to 7 current LGBTQIA+ students of Augsburg University. The program is designed to provide intentional community for LGBTQIA+ students to experience nature – and specifically the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA.)

When thinking about communities and identities safe and welcome to share outdoor spaces, LGBTQIA+ communities are often not included in that equation. This pilot program is offering the opportunity for LGBTQIA+ students to experience and engage in learning that doesn’t involve a ‘classroom.’ Because queer and trans+ communities haven’t historically been welcome in outdoor spaces, to engage in learning that doesn’t uphold the lens of ‘traditional education,’ this program is offering queer ways of knowing.

Being modeled from adrienne mareen brown’s book, Emergent Strategy, this program looks to biomimicry to better understand how queer movement can model nature to find ways of cooperative and collective action – resulting in queer liberation.

This trip will be led by Director, LGBTQIA+ Services – Max Poessnecker & an LGBTQIA+ identified Wilderness Canoe Base staff member. This trip requires ZERO experience in the outdoors, canoeing, or BWCA. Part of the goals of this pilot program are to create exposure, access, and dismantle gatekeeping to outdoor spaces upheld by racism, queerphobia, and capitalism.

Save the date and attend the virtual summer job camp fair on Monday, March 1, 2021. Camp representatives are looking to hire students to work over the summer with youth. Jobs vary from camp counselors, activity instructors, kitchen help, etc. Housing and food is included, as well as, as a stipend. Virtual fairs allow students to set up 1:1 meetings and/or attend short information sessions.

Sad News About Colleagues in Mexico

Today we share the sad news that two staff members at CGEE Mexico, Isabel Sanchez Hernandez and her husband, Moisés Rios, passed away on Sunday and Tuesday, respectively. Both had been in the hospital for COVID for the past month.

Isabel and Moisés were and always will be cherished members of the Augsburg community in Cuernavaca. Isabel worked as CGEE’s cleaner on and off for over 30 years, and Moisés was a night watchman and driver.

Here is a message of remembrance, written by Ann Lutterman-Aguilar, CGEE Mexico site director:

Maria Isabel Sanchez Hernandez was an amazing woman who touched the lives of students, faculty, and staff members alike. Isabel loved to sing while she worked and was known always to be smiling. She took English lessons so that she could communicate better with students, and she often stayed late, well beyond her work shift, so that she could help students with their Spanish homework. She was a colleague and a dear friend, someone who would always go the extra mile for the people around her. Her passing leaves a huge hole in our hearts.

Moisés Rios was a caring man who loved his family above all else. He didn’t speak much English, but this didn’t matter–even with those who didn’t speak Spanish, he always found ways to communicate. Words were not a barrier for Moi. Former students, visiting professors, and staff will attest to his warmth and kindness. As a driver, Moisés made countless runs to the airport, shops, community organizations, and field trip sites, showing every day that he was a critical part of the program team.

Isabel and Moisés leave behind their five children, Rosa, Andres, Diego, Miriam, and Sliri (11 years old).

These awards recognize student leaders, student organizations, and organization advisors for their innovation and outstanding leadership during this academic year. Recipients will be honored at the 22nd Annual Augsburg Leadership Awards on Sunday, April 18th from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. via Zoom.

We strongly encourage all faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members to submit nominations; self-nominations are also encouraged. The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 12 by 5:00 p.m.

Auggie Basics Housing – Applications Now Open

As part of the Augsburg University Equity Proposal, the Auggie Basics – Housing initiative is designed to address the needs of students who experience housing instability. The purpose of the program is to provide a bridge for students whose housing is not stable as they seek to identify a permanent solution.

Students accepted into the Auggie Basics Program will live on campus without cost to the student. Regardless of when students enter the program, the housing commitment will cover the full academic year if needed. If the student secures permanent housing elsewhere, they will be released from the program and the spot will be offered to another student. Summer housing may be an option. Students must reapply each academic year. Being chosen for the Auggie Basics program one year does not guarantee participation in future years.

The Holistic Health Series will be a monthly session facilitated by CWC and the Pan-Afrikan Center. For 60 minutes, students will come together on zoom to practice a plethora of grounding activities. Covid-19 and the historical racial unrest have increased anxiety, isolation, depression, unstable housing and employment, and more. CWC and the Pan-Afrikan Center will provide culturally competent sessions that will allow people to practice mindfulness through music, poetry, movement, relationship building, and more. After each session, the facilitators will ask for feedback and suggestions to increase the participants’ quality and enjoyment of Holistic Health Series.

10th Annual Kente Summit for Collegiate Black Men: The Prequel

On behalf of the Kente Summit Planning Committee, registration for the 2020-21 10th Annual Kente Summit for Collegiate Black Men is now open. This event will center on finding, celebrating and sustaining wellness and joy as Black men in 2021 after a challenging 2020 and will feature a special keynote address, Brotherhood Talking Circles, and interactive workshop. The Brotherhood Talking Circles portion of the event is limited to only students and facilitators.

Augsburg annually recognizes individuals or groups that have made exemplary contributions to creating an engaging academic learning environment through awards for teaching, scholarship, and service. All faculty or full-time staff who have been employed at the university for at least three years are eligible for the awards.

Apply to be in one of Augsburg’s three Public Leadership Scholar Programs: Christensen Scholars, Interfaith Scholars, or Sabo Scholars.
In these programs, you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in the Christian tradition, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive a $2,000 scholarship.

You are invited to hear Aisha Mohamed ’16 explore the intersection of of religion and science as she shares her own experience of being a Muslim and a biology major at Augsburg. While at Augsburg she was active in MSA and was an Interfaith Scholar and now is a second year student at University of Minnesota Medical School. Aisha will explore ethical questions raised by the advances in science such as organ donation and stem cell research. Awareness of these ethical questions can create strong leaders in scientific and other fields while holding deep connection to their faith. Following Aisha’s presentation, two Augsburg students will offer their responses and there will be time for questions from the audience.

New Course: Global Movement of Anti-Apartheid Southern Africa and the Murder of George Floyd

A new program is being offered this summer by the Pan-Afrikan Center and the Center for Global Education and Experience (CGEE) called Anti-Apartheid and Black Lives Matter: Global Movements for Racial Justice.

The program will be offered May 17 – May 28. Students will be able to receive 2 credits and fulfill the Augsburg Experience requirement OR they can take it only to fulfill the Augsburg Experience. The cost of the program is being supported by scholarships from CGEE, the Pan-Afrikan Center, and Augsburg University; therefore, we are able to offer it at a reduced price.

Time of class: May 17th -May 28th from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.

Program participants will critically analyze the global racial unrest movements of the Southern Africa Anti-Apartheid system, and the racially motivated murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Albertina Shifotoka, Program Director of CGEE Namibia, and Azania Tripp, Director of the Pan-Afrikan Center, will facilitate a 2-week program experience that will introduce students to the understanding of how these movements became historical events and impacted policy and the visibilities on racial inequities that impact the Pan-Afrikan diaspora and all BIPOC communities. The program will be offered from May 17 – May 28, 2021 and the deadline for applying is Thurs, March 25.

Black History Month: Self-Love

Hello Auggies,

We are excited to announce the first ever in-person event for ESA (Ethiopian Student Association). On February 26, 2021, we will be celebrating Black History Month, and in that we wanted to provide a space where we can navigate through our experiences with self-love and self-appreciation. You will have the opportunity to check-in with yourselves and bring out your creative side.

We will be having a lot of fun activities including but not limited to face mask decorating, giveaways and so much more. More details on the event will be announced in the days to come. Keep a lookout for that!
