How to Make Your Gradebooks Reflect Your Syllabus

submitted by slettens@augsburg.edu

It is important that your syllabus is reflected accurately and completely in your gradebook so students have a clear understanding of expectations and grading. Your eLearning team is here to help you check that the two are synchronized at the onset of the semester. The following are some suggestions for syllabus-gradebook alignment.

1) Create a syllabus with grading in mind. Use the Augsburg University Syllabus Template, which you may download to use as a model. This template includes important university policies.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ly5o03eoerlA7zjVR8bwboO-DgclyFrTDcVf_e0GxBs/copy?usp=sharing

2) Build your course in Moodle. Below are directions to use the Moodle Course Template. This template is intended to be a time-saver for instructors, but it also ensures consistency in course design to reduce unnecessary stress for students.
https://support.augsburg.edu/support/index.php?/default_import/Knowledgebase/Article/View/701/49/moodle-course-template-installation

3) Refer to the following resource to learn more about recommended gradebook setups:

https://moodle.augsburg.edu/moodle2021/mod/page/view.php?id=6535

Heads up – Upcoming Workshops!
+January 18th from 10-12pm, your IT team will be offering a Zoom workshop on how to make your gradebooks reflect your syllabus, extra credit, categories, values, and weights. Please save the date and stay tuned for more!
+January 23rd from 2-3pm, we will host a discussion about ChatGPT, on Zoom.

MLK Convocation: We Rise MLK and Our Voices Coming Alive

submitted by mitche13@augsburg.edu

On behalf of Pan-Afrikan Student Services and Augsburg University, we are excited to bring you this year’s Martin Luther King, JR., Convocation. This year’s theme is “We Rise, MLK and Our Voices Coming Alive”. As a community we came together and decided that we wanted this year’s theme to focus on our efforts to rebuild the community after a pandemic and absence of visibility and support systems for Pan-Afrikan students. This was mostly seen through not having a full office at Multicultural Life for an entire academic year. This event will center our Pan-Afrikan community through the art of dance, song, poetry, and more. All are welcome!

Our keynote speaker of this year is Dr. Terrance Kwame-Ross, Associate Professor in the Education Department at Augsburg University. Through his scholarship, service, and teaching practice, Dr. Kwame-Ross focuses on how individuals and human groups grow, develop, and change over time. He brings an interrogative, interdisciplinary, integrative, and intersectional pedagogical approach to teaching and learning across school, society, family, and church for whole-beingness. To learn more about Dr. Terrance Kwame-Ross, please visit our website here: https://www.augsburg.edu/faculty/kwameros/

For any questions, please email Kezia Burrows, program manager of Pan-Afrikan Student Services at burrowsk@augsburg.edu

For any accommodation needs, please event our team at events@augsburg.edu

Attending to Attendance: Creating a Course/Policy That Works

submitted by reederm@augsburg.edu

CTL invites you to join Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright (Biology & CTL Director) and Audrey Lensmire (Education) for a 90-minute Zoom workshop Wednesday, January 4, 2023 from 10 – 11:30 am. This workshop, inspired by faculty discussion at the December faculty meeting, has been specifically created for Augsburg teaching faculty who are experiencing frustration related to student attendance in their courses and would like to do something about it that meets both instructor and student needs. This workshop will ask you to think about why you have your current attendance policies, what isn’t working and what do you want to happen, followed by time to literally “workshop” your Spring course policies with others who have similar issues (as well as some solutions!). Faculty who have successful attendance policies in their course are also encouraged to attend to act as peer mentors!

If you have any questions, would like to request accessibility accommodations, or would like to “officially register” as a peer mentor, please contact Jennifer L. Bankers-Fulbright, Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at ctl@augsburg.edu or bankers@augsburg.edu.

Looking forward to a productive start to Spring 2023!

Duo Mobile and New Phones

submitted by krajewsk@augsburg.edu

The holiday season is a time for gifts and often those gifts are new phones. When moving to a new phone, ensuring your Duo Mobile is working will be important as Duo Mobile is required to access online services like email and Moodle. You could be unable to access these online services until your Duo Mobile is re-setup.

Here’s some tips for a smooth phone transition:

1) Use the iCloud backup and restore feature of your iPhone when moving your phone apps and data to a new iPhone. Tutorial: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201269
This will likely ensure Duo Mobile will still be registered in your new phone. This assumes your phone number is staying the same. Android phones may not transfer automatically.

MLK Convocation: We Rise MLK and Our Voices Coming Alive

submitted by burrowsk@augsburg.edu

On behalf of Pan-Afrikan Student Services and Augsburg University, we are excited to bring you this year’s Martin Luther King, JR., Convocation. This year’s theme is “We Rise, MLK and Our Voices Coming Alive”, in community, this was inspired in our efforts to rebuild community after a pandemic and absence of visibility and support systems for Pan-Afrikan students, mostly seen through not having a full office at Multicultural Life for an entire academic year.

Before Your Spring 2023 Courses Begin (Part 2)

submitted by slettens@augsburg.edu

In preparation for Spring semester your E-learning team is here to help you remember some key “to do’s’” before Spring 2023 courses begin.

1) We recommend that you send a friendly welcome email/announcement to students enrolled in your class about a week before the start of your class. This email could include: course syllabus and schedule; class modality reminder (on-campus, hybrid, online); Zoom link; required books; and information about starting course. NOTE: Announcement emails do not get sent to students if your course is hidden, so be sure to make your course visible to students before posting in the Announcements forum.

2) Confirm all CLASS support is identified and prepared for (i.e. captioning). CLASS can be contacted at class@augsburg.edu. You can find more information in the link below:

https://www.augsburg.edu/class/

3) You have access to resources like Moodle 101, 102, and 201 which will help inform you and revitalize your Moodle skills. You can find these under “My courses” on Moodle.

4) Check out other ways to leverage Moodle through the link below:

http://go.augsburg.edu/fmr

For additional help, contact your LFC or IDT (Instructional Design Technologist).

Get Your Art Published: Literary and Arts Submission Now Open for Thó Wiŋ Magazine

submitted by belloaa@augsburg.edu

Hello,

Thó Wiŋ Magazine and I am so excited to tell you that SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW OPEN!

Are you an artist or writer who wants to have your work published? Well, here’s your chance.

Thó Wiŋ Magazine is curating our annual literary and arts publication. This opportunity is open to students, faculty, staff, and anyone else in the Augsburg community so tell your friends to submit something too. We accept art of all kinds: poetry, fiction, nonfiction, screenwriting/playwriting, other prose, visual arts including painting, photography, graphic design, drawing, multi-media, photographs of sculptures or ceramics. We can create and print QR codes for short films, animation, video, or music. If your kind of art isn’t listed, submit it anyway! We like arts from all cultures and all skill levels. If you create art in another language, submit that too (but maybe include a translation with it to make it more accessible to us monolinguals). We especially encourage artists with marginalized identities to submit their art so we can uplift your voices! Thó Wiŋ Magazine will put a printed book together and distribute on campus for free. You can submit up to five different works across any genre. Submissions will close February 1st. Visit https://twmagazine.submittable.com/submit

Hit me up if you have any questions, jensen11@augsburg.edu or TWMagazine@augsburg.edu

2) If you run into trouble and still have your old phone, you can enroll your new phone at https://duo.augsburg.edu. Keep in mind you will need to use your old phone to approve your login in order to enroll the new phone. Keep your old phone on WiFi to receive the Duo prompt.

3) Set up Duo Restore in the Duo Mobile app by following the directions at https://guide.duo.com/duo-restore.

You can always contact your LFC https://sites.augsburg.edu/it/get-help/faculty-and-staff-support-lfcs/ (faculty and staff) or the Tech Desk https://sites.augsburg.edu/techdesk/ (students) for help. With limited hours over the holiday break, responses may be delayed.
