Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.
If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology
research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to
complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.
Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

Friends of Roberts Bird Sanctuary is partnering with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to add an observation deck to the Roberts visitor shelter. We are raising funds this summer with the goal to complete construction after fall migration.
This observation deck will help make Roberts Bird Sanctuary more accessible to people of all abilities.

Prepare and Prosper Internship and Volunteer Opportunities

Prepare + Prosper is an organization that, through volunteers and strong community partnerships, brings free tax services to build financial wellbeing for low-income taxpayers! They facilitate tax clinics throughout the Twin Cities region that provide free tax preparation and financial products to low- and moderate-income individuals and families. For the 2023 tax season, they are looking for more than 400 new volunteers to meet the current demands in our community.
This is a great opportunity to learn the practical skills gained in the tax clinic–interpersonal and technical–that are invaluable in gaining work experience for a variety of professions including those in business and social work. Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.
What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.
Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 3 undergraduate science students, 1 undergraduate business/economics student, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations. The purpose of the JSI Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field.
Selected participants spend the summer at one of six participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, University of Washington or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2023 and August 2024. To be competitive for this opportunity, students should have a 3.5 GPA or above. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

Please help us at the Sabo Center extend a warm Augsburg welcome to Emma Snyder (she/her), Imogen Page (she/they), and Wren Doyle (she/her). They will be interning with the Sabo Center for Democracy & Citizenship through the end of spring semester 2023.
Emma is a Masters in Social Work student at Augsburg University, focusing on Macro Practice. Emma is working with Jenean Gilmer, Program Manager for Community-Engaged Learning, to support the Cedar-Riverside Neighborhood Food Initiative.
Imogen is a Masters in Social Work student at the University of Minnesota and is interested in mental health. She’ll be working with Natalie Jacobson, Food Systems Program Manager, on projects related to food access both on and off campus.

As companies like Amazon and Target have switched to using flex drivers to deliver their packages we seeing packages delivered all over campus instead of to the Shipping/Receiving Department. We have been trying to fix the issue of packages being left in random places around campus. If you see a package delivered to someplace other then Shipping/Receiving please let us know or bring it in so we can get it to the correct person.

With the 2022-23 school year we have some changes to the Central Services. We are going down to a three-person staff:

With the change in staffing levels we need to change the print project lead time to 24-hours. Please be sure to call the Copy Center (612-330-1054) before submitting anything needed sooner. The smoothest process to having your print job completed in time is to submit it using the Augsburg Copy Request system, https://sites.augsburg.edu/centralservices/copy-center-costs/.
Printer support calls/paper request may now take up to 3 hours for Central Services to have someone free to come and look at it. Please call us when your put in your second to last ream of paper to avoid being completely out of paper. If you do not have a back up printer option please ask IT how to add the printer driver to your computer so if the main printer you use is waiting for service you have another option to send your documents to. The Copy Center is also an option at the link above.

The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) is an initiative funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF Grant #1712619) which is intended to double the number of African-American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Alaska Native, and Pacific Islander students receiving baccalaureate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in a five-year period. In Minnesota, the LSAMP program is called the Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance (LS-NSSA). LS-NSSA is a partnership of 16 higher education institutions and 3 community partners in Minnesota.

URGO Department is Hiring Health Professions Specialist

The office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) is hiring a full-time Health Professions Specialist to coordinate the prehealth program at Augsburg University.
The Health Professions Specialist will be charged with developing, supporting, and maintaining a high-quality prehealth program as well as advising prehealth students directly. This includes providing support and advice to current students, as well as alumni, who are considering a wide range of health professions and assisting them with finding vocational fit; assisting students with the health professional school application processes, providing information on entrance exams, fee waiver applications, accommodation requests, and interviews; collecting and disseminating information regarding health professions to students, faculty, and staff; collecting and maintaining data regarding students’ acceptances to health-related professional schools; coordinating campus health professions events; and developing relationships with health professions schools and programs to benefit applicants as well as alumni working in health professions to increase shadowing, mentoring and research opportunities for prehealth students.
Minimum Qualifications
– A Master’s degree in the liberal arts or sciences is required.
3 to 5 years of experience in healthcare, higher education, or career development coaching is required.
– Knowledge and interest in the writing process; ability to evaluate and coach students’ writing from diverse educational backgrounds and with varied skill sets.
– Knowledge of the health professions.

What is the Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance (LS-NSSA)?

Looking for a way to build leadership skills, mentor aspiring debaters, and earn extra money in a meaningful way? Become a debate coach with the MNUDL! We are currently seeking community coaches for 2022 Fall Semester (Sept.-December) debate programming.
Community coaches are experienced debaters who want to share their expertise with students and collaborate with teacher coaches at our area schools. Applicants who competed in Policy/Cross-Examination, Classic, Parliamentary, Lincoln Douglas, or Public Forum debate as high schoolers/college students would be highly preferred. Although we primarily practice policy debate, folks with other forms of debate experience are welcome to apply.
Applicants must be able to travel within the Twin Cities Metro for weekday practices and weekend tournaments. High Holy Days Primer

We are entering the Jewish High Holy Day season, which runs for the entire lunar month of Tishrei this year from Monday evening, September 6 – Wednesday, September 29. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are listed on secular calendars, but there is another 9-day holiday called Sukkot, right after Yom Kippur. It is a big harvest celebration but it is not listed on calendars.
The second set of holidays, Sukkot, is likely much less observed among our Jewish students and faculty, though some students will not go to class on the first two and last two days of Sukkot (dates below).
For college students, being away from home for these holidays can highlight the homesickness and the yearning to be in the nest, and for some, quite the opposite. If you celebrate Christmas, imagine staying on campus while most students return home for the holiday. If you celebrate Ramadan, this season is similar to that month of observance. The University of Minnesota Hillel will welcome students and can be reached through http://www.mnhillel.org.
The greeting for this season is, “Sha-NAH to-VAH”. meaning Happy New Year.
How to be an ally: We encourage you to have conversations with your Jewish students and colleagues about their observances. If you are aware that students or colleagues are Jewish, it would likely be welcomed to ask them how they observe the holidays and what they mean to them. Since Jewish students and colleagues may or may not self-identify, you may want to announce an invitation to ”any Jewish students/faculty” to talk with you about what this next month is for them, vis a vis classes or being far (or near) family. To further be an ally you could also move important meetings or events away from Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Chapel: Community Space Naming Loss and Seeking Healing

Join Campus Ministry and the Center for Wellness in Counseling today in Hoversten Chapel at 10:40 am in this interfaith time of community connection and shared healing at the outset of this academic year. Over the last two and a half years, the COVID-19 pandemic has generated deep loss among us and within our communities. We have witnessed the tragic loss of life on account of this disease around the globe, and some in our Augsburg community have experienced it intimately within their own circles of loved ones. We have also lost time and connection having navigated the complexities of lock-down, isolation, and ongoing social distancing. We have lost opportunities, hopes, and for many, a sense of security and wellbeing. These losses have taken their toll emotionally, physically, mentally.
We as community will offer a time to publicly name our loss and seek healing pathways as we journey together as an Augsburg community. Our gathering will offer words of reflection alongside space for quiet and song. Every participant will have an opportunity to mark their own loss as another step on healing’s path. All are welcome.

Prepare + Prosper is an organization that, through volunteers and strong community partnerships, brings free tax services to build financial wellbeing for low-income taxpayers! They facilitate tax clinics throughout the Twin Cities region that provide free tax preparation and financial products to low- and moderate-income individuals and families. For the 2023 tax season, they are looking for more than 400 new volunteers to meet the current demands in our community.
This is a great opportunity to learn the practical skills gained in the tax clinic–interpersonal and technical–that are invaluable in gaining work experience for a variety of professions including those in business and social work. What is the Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance (LS-NSSA)?
Called LS-NSSA for short, this program is an initiative funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) which is intended to increase the number of Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Alaska Native and Pacific Islander students receiving baccalaureate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The Augsburg LS-NSSA program provides stipends, research opportunities, and more to students who meet the eligibility criteria and complete a brief program application. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and you will hear back soon after applying. All students are welcome to participate in LS-NSSA events and programming but to receive program funding, a completed application is required.

Looking for a way to build leadership skills, mentor aspiring debaters, and earn extra money in a meaningful way? Become a debate coach with the MNUDL! We are currently seeking community coaches for 2022 Fall Semester (Sept.-December) debate programming.
Community coaches are experienced debaters who want to share their expertise with students and collaborate with teacher coaches at our area schools. Applicants who competed in Policy/Cross-Examination, Classic, Parliamentary, Lincoln Douglas, or Public Forum debate as high schoolers/college students would be highly preferred. Although we primarily practice policy debate, folks with other forms of debate experience are welcome to apply.
Applicants must be able to travel within the Twin Cities Metro for weekday practices and weekend tournaments. The MNUDL is an equal opportunity employer and we encourage candidates of all backgrounds and experiences to apply, including BIPOC candidates, LGBTQIA+ applicants, and people with disabilities. We believe debate is for everyone, and that includes our coaches! Applicants must be able to pass a background check.

Kristen shared some bittersweet news—she has accepted a new role at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School as their Vice President for Development. I’m excited to see how Kristen lives out her vocational calling in ways that benefit their compelling mission.
In this role, Kristen will be leading their efforts in fundraising, advancement services and alumni relations. She’s particularly excited about opportunities to work with local corporations and foundations, as well as their president, who just began this summer.

Students are able to use 3 hours a week; 3 one hour sessions or 6 thirty-minute sessions. You can access TutorMe through any of your Moodle classes. New Year in Central Services

With the 2022-23 school year we have some changes to the Central Services. We are going down to a three-person staff:

With the change in staffing levels we need to change the print project lead time to 24-hours. Please be sure to call the Copy Center (612-330-1054) before submitting anything needed sooner. The smoothest process to having your print job completed in time is to submit it using the Augsburg Copy Request system, https://sites.augsburg.edu/centralservices/copy-center-costs/.
Printer support calls/paper request may now take up to 3 hours for Central Services to have someone free to come and look at it. Please call us when your put in your second to last ream of paper to avoid being completely out of paper. If you do not have a back up printer option please ask IT how to add the printer driver to your computer so if the main printer you use is waiting for service you have another option to send your documents to. The Copy Center is also an option at the link above.

As companies like Amazon and Target have switched to using flex drivers to deliver their packages we seeing packages delivered all over campus instead of to the Shipping/Receiving Department. We have been trying to fix the issue of packages being left in random places around campus. If you see a package delivered to someplace other then Shipping/Receiving please let us know or bring it in so we can get it to the correct person.
To help the flex drivers find the correct building please use the Christensen Center’s building address when ordering instead of the general campus address. Please make sure you have your full name on the order.

Please join us in Hoversten Chapel at 11:30 am for a service of morning prayer. During this service we will also install our campus ministry musician Brian De Young. Brian De Young (he/him) joins Augsburg University after many years in church music ministry in congregations in Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota. In addition to his role in Campus Ministry, he currently serves as the Director of Music at Olivet Congregational Church in St. Paul. With a bachelor’s degree in organ performance and graduate education in both church music and piano performance, Brian is a musician of broad skills and wide-ranging interests. Outside of Augsburg he may be seen performing classical chamber music, singing Renaissance and Baroque choral music, playing in a theatre pit orchestra, or on keys at a Twin Cities Tango Collective event. He lives in South Minneapolis with his partner Alena, daughters Nina and Elisabeth, and rescue mutt Copper.

Please join me in welcoming Kate Norlander as the new Marketing Project and Production Manager. Kate has been working with the marketing and communication team as a contractor for over five years and we are glad to have her on the team full time. As a member of the shared services agreement between Luther Seminary and Augsburg University, Kate will support both schools to manage marketing projects.
Kate has extensive experience in project management and strategy, copywriting, and collaboration from her time at the United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities and the University of St. Thomas.

Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance 2022 Kickoff

URGO Department is Hiring Health Professions Specialist

The office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) is hiring a full-time Health Professions Specialist to coordinate the prehealth program at Augsburg University.
The Health Professions Specialist will be charged with developing, supporting, and maintaining a high-quality prehealth program as well as advising prehealth students directly. This includes providing support and advice to current students, as well as alumni, who are considering a wide range of health professions and assisting them with finding vocational fit; assisting students with the health professional school application processes, providing information on entrance exams, fee waiver applications, accommodation requests, and interviews; collecting and disseminating information regarding health professions to students, faculty, and staff; collecting and maintaining data regarding students’ acceptances to health-related professional schools; coordinating campus health professions events; and developing relationships with health professions schools and programs to benefit applicants as well as alumni working in health professions to increase shadowing, mentoring and research opportunities for prehealth students.
Minimum Qualifications
– A Master’s degree in the liberal arts or sciences is required.
3 to 5 years of experience in healthcare, higher education, or career development coaching is required.

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.
What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.
Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 3 undergraduate science students, 1 undergraduate business/economics student, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations. The purpose of the JSI Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field.
Selected participants spend the summer at one of six participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, University of Washington or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2023 and August 2024. To be competitive for this opportunity, students should have a 3.5 GPA or above. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

As companies like Amazon and Target have switched to using flex drivers to deliver their packages we seeing packages delivered all over campus instead of to the Shipping/Receiving Department. We have been trying to fix the issue of packages being left in random places around campus. If you see a package delivered to someplace other then Shipping/Receiving please let us know or bring it in so we can get it to the correct person.

Looking for a way to build leadership skills, mentor aspiring debaters, and earn extra money in a meaningful way? Become a debate coach with the MNUDL! We are currently seeking community coaches for 2022 Fall Semester (Sept.-December) debate programming.
Community coaches are experienced debaters who want to share their expertise with students and collaborate with teacher coaches at our area schools. Applicants who competed in Policy/Cross-Examination, Classic, Parliamentary, Lincoln Douglas, or Public Forum debate as high schoolers/college students would be highly preferred. Although we primarily practice policy debate, folks with other forms of debate experience are welcome to apply.
Applicants must be able to travel within the Twin Cities Metro for weekday practices and weekend tournaments. What is the Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance (LS-NSSA)?
Called LS-NSSA for short, this program is an initiative funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) which is intended to increase the number of Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Alaska Native and Pacific Islander students receiving baccalaureate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The Augsburg LS-NSSA program provides stipends, research opportunities, and more to students who meet the eligibility criteria and complete a brief program application. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and you will hear back soon after applying. All students are welcome to participate in LS-NSSA events and programming but to receive program funding, a completed application is required.

We’re excited to announce a new on campus meeting for anyone in recovery (of any form), curious about recovery, or have loved ones who struggle with any form of addiction. It is hosted by StepUp students, but is in no way limited to only StepUp students or people with specifically substance abuse issues. This isn’t tied to AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) or NA (Narcotics Anonymous), it’s our own format and is completely fluid. We’re open to suggestions of any ways to better the meeting. Our focus is on providing a place to constructively process issues and work on spiritual development, whatever that may look like. Northern Ireland is CGEE’s newest “Study Center” Study Abroad program, which are programs rooted community-based experiential learning focusing on issues of Peace, Justice and Social Change. These programs offer a variety of courses which satisfy general education and language requirements and many more. Auggies that choose to go abroad on these programs receive an automatic $1,500 CGEE Travel Grant. See the website for details at studyabroad.augsburg.edu.

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.
What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.
Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 3 undergraduate science students, 1 undergraduate business/economics student, 2 Augsburg faculty, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,500. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations. The purpose of the JSI Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field.
Selected participants spend the summer at one of six participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, University of Washington or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2023 and August 2024. To be competitive for this opportunity, students should have a 3.5 GPA or above. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.
