We are deeply grateful for your engagement and support throughout this initiative, and to Andy Aoki, Bob Groven, and Joe Underhill for serving as Parliamentarians and deftly facilitating the second reading and vote during the April 10th faculty meeting. Augsburg recently announced an agreement to sell the former Bethany Lutheran Church property at 2511 E. Franklin Ave. to the Somali Museum of Minnesota to develop a permanent museum facility and cultural center on the site.

Neighbors and community members are invited to attend a community gathering about the past, present, and future of 2511 E. Franklin Ave. Please join us to learn about the Somali Museum and their vision for the site. Participants will be invited to share stories about the site’s history and place in Seward.

Student Volunteers Needed for April 27 Event—$50 Gift Card

A number of volunteers are needed to take notes at a community engagement event in the Seward neighborhood on April 27. This event will feature presentations and conversation about the vision for the former Bethany Lutheran Church property at 2511 E. Franklin Ave. Augsburg recently announced an agreement to sell the property to the Somali Museum of Minnesota to develop a permanent museum facility and cultural center on the site.

Volunteers will take notes at small group discussions during the second half of the event (bring a laptop or transcribe your notes into a digital document within 48 hours). Students at Pi Mu Epsilon Conference

Augsburg mathematics and computer science students Khandakar Saad (’25) and Ivie Taft (’26) attended the Annual Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society Conference, April 12-13 at St. John’s University, Collegeville, MN. Dr. Haines accompanied the students.

Ivie presented her work based on a class project from Dr. Bělík’s Numerical Analysis course. The presentation “Deformations on a Beam: Computational Approximation” was very well received.

Thanks to those who contributed to the Give to the Max Day campaign that funded the travel, lodging, and food.

Augsburg celebrates the creativity and scholarship of undergraduate students with its annual Zyzzogeton Student Research Symposium. The symposium falls at the end of each academic year and is a culmination of achievement featuring work across departments.

This year Zyzzogeton will feature posters from more than 60 undergraduate researchers in the science, social science and humanity disciplines.

Zyzzogeton will take place on Tuesday, April 16, 3 – 4:30pm in Hagfors Center. There will be a convocation schedule for that day and no classes scheduled during the event time, so we hope that all students, faculty and staff are able to attend!

National Marrow Donor Drive TODAY

Augsburg University Football Team will host a Marrow Donor Drive on Tuesday, April 16th during the hours of 10 am to 3 pm. There will be tables to register in front of the Kennedy Center, Christensen Center, & Hagfors.

Last year, we were able to secure 345 registered donors with 3 matches from our community. We would like to reach a goal of 500 registered donors on that day.

Online Survey – Chance to Win $100 Gift Card

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

Explore Augsburg’s “Radical Roots” in New Book

A new book by President Paul Pribbenow, Associate Professor Katie Clark, Professor Tim Pippert, and former staff member Green Bouzard explores how Augsburg deepened its commitment to the public purposes of higher education over the last half century.

“Radical Roots: How One Professor Changed a University’s Legacy” tells the story of Augsburg sociology professor Joel Torstenson. In the 1960s, Torstenson challenged Augsburg to embrace its urban setting and to design curricular, co-curricular, and community engagement programs to advance the mission of “Education for service.”

The compelling story of Torstenson’s legacy at Augsburg over the past 60 years offers lessons for colleges and universities across the country committed to democratic engagement in their work at the intersections of mission and place.

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

2024 Zyzzogeton Student Research Symposium – April 16

Augsburg celebrates the creativity and scholarship of undergraduate students with its annual Zyzzogeton Student Research Symposium. The symposium falls at the end of each academic year and is a culmination of achievement featuring work across departments.

This year Zyzzogeton will feature posters from more than 50 undergraduate researchers in the science, social science and humanity disciplines.

Zyzzogeton will take place on Tuesday, April 16, 3 – 4:30pm in Hagfors Center. There will be a convocation schedule for that day and no classes scheduled during the event time, so we hope that all students, faculty and staff are able to attend!

Connecting in the Face of Climate Change

In this interactive lunch and workshop, we will be exploring ways to address climate anxiety through connective practices. Gather together with other members of the Augsburg community to explore place-based practices for reconnecting with ourselves, each other, and the rest of the natural world. We will start with a brief introduction and then tour the Augsburg Urban Arboretum together, stopping along the way to experiment with practices for remembering and restoring connections to the larger communities of which we are a part, as well as with our own sense of grounding and vitality. A locally-sourced bag lunch from Laune Bread will be available on a first come first served based for up to twenty participants!

The Sverdrup Visiting Scientist Program welcomes Dr. Bala Chaudhary, Associate Professor Of Environmental Studies at Dartmouth College. In her Convocation Lecture titled “Strategies for Anti-racist Action in STEM”, Chaudhary will explain how to create, nurture, and sustain cultures of inclusion in belonging in science (Tuesday, April 16, Hoversten Chapel, 11:00 AM). Act Now: Ask Your Legislators to Invest in the Promise Equalization Scholarship

Last year’s investment by state policymakers in college affordability through the North Star Promise left out one-third of low- and middle-income students earning bachelor’s degrees—those who attend private nonprofit colleges like Augsburg.

New legislation authored this year by Sen. Omar Fateh and Rep. Dan Wolgamott would provide financial aid parity for low- and middle-income students at nonprofit colleges. The PROMISE EQUALIZATION SCHOLARSHIP investment of $13.9 million would mirror how much the state is investing through the North Star Promise to support students at the University of Minnesota, restoring financial aid parity for students at nonprofit colleges.

With the new Promise Equalization Scholarship, the State of Minnesota would help make college more affordable and reduce student debt for those students at nonprofit colleges with the most need—just as the North Star Promise Scholarship has done for low- and middle-income students at public and tribal colleges. An estimated 13,000 students would receive an average scholarship of about $1,000, helping low- and middle-income students who currently receive the Minnesota State Grant. Here at Augsburg, about 1,400 undergraduates would benefit from the new scholarship. Because there is a large surplus in the appropriation for the North Star Promise, this can be accomplished without any additional state funding.

The Minnesota Private College Council has put together an easy way to contact your legislators—it only takes a minute.

Farewell Gathering for Dixie Shafer

Dixie was the inaugural Director of Augsburg’s McNair Scholars program and has spent the last 20 years directing the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity. Dixie is moving out of higher education and pursuing a new career in development with Northern Star Scouting. Dixie’s last day at Augsburg will be Friday, April 19th.

The Sverdrup Visiting Scientist Program welcomes Dr. Bala Chaudhary, Associate Professor Of Environmental Studies at Dartmouth College. In her Convocation Lecture titled “Strategies for Anti-racist Action in STEM”, Chaudhary will explain how to create, nurture, and sustain cultures of inclusion in belonging in science (Tuesday, April 16, Hoversten Chapel, 11:00 AM). National Marrow Donor Drive

Augsburg University Football Team will host a Marrow Donor Drive on Tuesday, April 16th during the hours of 10 am to 3 pm. There will be tables to register in front of the Kennedy Center, Christensen Center, & Hagfors.

Last year, we were able to secure 345 registered donors with 3 matches from our community. We would like to reach a goal of 500 registered donors on that day.

2024 Zyzzogeton Student Research Symposium – April 16

Augsburg celebrates the creativity and scholarship of undergraduate students with its annual Zyzzogeton Student Research Symposium. The symposium falls at the end of each academic year and is a culmination of achievement featuring work across departments.

This year Zyzzogeton will feature posters from more than 50 undergraduate researchers in the science, social science and humanity disciplines.

Zyzzogeton will take place on Tuesday, April 16, 3 – 4:30pm in Hagfors Center. There will be a convocation schedule for that day and no classes scheduled during the event time, so we hope that all students, faculty and staff are able to attend!

The vote on the proposed general education revisions is planned for the faculty meeting on Wednesday, April 10th from 3:40 – 5:10pm. Information about the proposed revisions is available in the updated General Education Revision Proposal. The proposal consists of an introduction (p. 1), an executive summary (p. 2), and an overview of the rationale and proposed revisions to our undergraduate general education curriculum (pp. 3 – 11).

We are grateful to Augsburg Day Student Government for their review and unanimous support of the proposed revisions, to our faculty colleagues for their comments and questions at the first reading during the March faculty meeting, and to all those who contributed to this important initiative over the last year.

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Research on Caffeine and Reaction Time

Hello my name is Munira Jama. I’m an undergraduate student in the Health, Physical Education and Exercise Science department at Augsburg University, alongside my co-investigators, Moyin Abiodun, Annika Rudolph, and Natalie Delgado. We are conducting a study as part of our HPE 303L Advanced Human Anatomy and Physiology lab under the supervision of our advisor Tara Mader, Ph.D; a professor in the Health, Physical Education and Exercise Science department.

We would like to invite you to participate in a research study on the effects of caffeine on reaction time. You were selected as a possible participant because you are a student at Augsburg University. Please read this entire email before agreeing to participate. If you have any questions now or later, you may contact any of the researchers or our advisor.

If you agree to be in this study, you’ll be weighed prior to starting the study, drink caffeine, and have your reaction time measured. In total, participation time will be approximately 40 minutes. Caffeine doses will be administered within safe limits depending on participants weight (3 mg per kg) there will be no abnormal side effects.

Pan-Asian Banquet

The Pan Asian Banquet is an annual event in the Spring that commemorates all Pan Asian-identified students and their achievements. This event will be funded by PASS, Hmong Women Together, and the Augsburg Asian Student Association.
