Remembering Nadia Christensen ’59

submitted by bergc2@augsburg.edu

Please join me in remembering and celebrating the life of Nadia M. Christensen ’59, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 86.

Nadia’s deep connections to Augsburg began in childhood and persisted throughout her lifetime. The daughter of Bernhard Christensen, Augsburg’s eighth president, and Lilly Gracia Christensen, professor emerita of English, she graduated magna cum laude with a degree in sociology in 1959. Her family’s Scandinavian heritage profoundly influenced Nadia’s intellectual trajectory and vocation. After earning a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in comparative literature, she taught at the University of Washington, Pacific Lutheran University, and the University of Minnesota. She went on to become one of the foremost translators of Norwegian literature, publishing hundreds of translations of fiction, poetry, and drama over the course of her career.

From 1991–96, Nadia returned to Augsburg to serve as the executive director of the Nordic Center (now Norway Hub) and later as director of international partners. She led efforts to promote interest in contemporary Norway and the other four Nordic nations—Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Sweden. In 1996, His Majesty King Harald V of Norway honored Nadia with the prestigious Knight’s Cross, given for outstanding service in the interest of Norway to foreign nationals.

Nadia was both a meaningful link to her family’s long legacy at Augsburg and a force for ensuring that Augsburg’s Norwegian roots and relationships would remain strong. She worked tirelessly to bring Norwegian students to Augsburg for exchange programs, and her relationships with schools across Norway were the occasion for Augsburg faculty, staff, and students to engage with contemporary Norway. We celebrate all that Nadia meant to our community as we grieve her loss. More information can be viewed in her obituary posted below. Please join me in holding her loved ones in prayer.

Faithfully yours,
Paul Pribbenow

Online Survey – Chance to Win $100 Gift Card

submitted by fleigr@augsburg.edu

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

If you have any questions or concerns regarding participation in this study, please contact me at fleigr@augsburg.edu. If you would like to participate in this study, please click the link below. You will be taken to a secure, online survey where you will be presented with a consent form followed by the demographic screener and brief inventories. Upon completion of these, you will be shown the link to the final assessment.

Don’t Lose Your Mail

submitted by longj@augsburg.edu

As we near the end of another year please don’t forget to take care of your campus mailbox. This includes checking it for any mail, returning your lock and filing out the survey for what you would like us to do with your mail after this semester.

Two weeks after the spring semester ends (May 17, 2024) we will be closing all student campus boxes. Then in August before the fall semester starts we will reassign them (possible new numbers) to all students living on campus. Commuter students can then request to have a campus box if they would like one.

If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer, please either fill out this survey (https://forms.gle/Jwo9MsvTgnECbYh49). There is also an option to be reassigned your current campus box number for the next semester if you will be returning in the fall.

We are only able to forward 1st Class USPS mail and packages. Other packages (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will not be forwarded. We can also only forward to USA addresses. The forwarding period for the Augsburg Mailroom is two months from when the request is submitted. Afterward any additional mail we receive will be returned to sender.

We request that you contact the people/business sending you mail and update your address with them. Enrolling in online/electronic bills or statements can also be a smart option. It is environmentally friendly, secure and will often save you time (and sometimes money). Asking us to forward your mail does not change your mailing address with the post office or the University, just the Mailroom.

Days in May: Assessment Triple Play Wednesday 5/8

submitted by denkinge@augsburg.edu

What if we told you that this year, you’re not just getting ONE assessment presentation, but THREE TIMES the excitement for the same low, low price of zero dollars? Well, hold on to your tams and tassels, fellow faculty members, because this Wednesday, May 8th from 1 – 2:45pm in Oren 200 we’re hosting a series of presentations and discussions revolving around the assessment and program review work that was accomplished by programs, departments, and institutionally:

1. QR Assessment Results (1pm – 1:35pm): This year, the Assessment Committee collected data on Quantitative Reasoning from hundreds of students across a wide range of courses. During this session, we’ll use a new interactive PowerBI dashboard to examine emerging themes in this dataset, including the amount of mathematical and quantitative foundational coursework students experience, math placement scores, self-reflective assessments of their own skills and supporting experiences, and their performance on a short measure of applied problem solving skills.

2. Departmental Assessment Showcase (1:35 – 2:10pm): Departments and programs annually assess student learning and experience within their own curricular offerings. Join us for a cross-disciplinary showcase of some of the most impressive and creative approaches to assessment. As in previous years, this showcase is a great opportunity to draw inspiration from methods and approaches used by others on campus, and to learn more about the skills and backgrounds of our students.

3. Program Review Showcase (2:10 – 2:45): Do you have an upcoming program review? In this “showcase” session we will cover the basics of the program review process and hear from program directors and department chairs who recently completed an external review or are currently preparing for a review.

Don’t Forget Your Mail

submitted by longj@augsburg.edu

Bon Voyage to Librarians Karen Alexander, Mike Bloomberg, and Mary Hollerich

submitted by fillbran@augsburg.edu

Please join us for a “bon voyage” celebration in the learning commons on the first floor of Lindell Library on Friday, May 3 from 2pm to 5pm! Come for 5 minutes, an hour, or the whole time!

The library will see three retirements at the end of May: Karen Alexander, Mike Bloomberg, and Mary Hollerich. We want to celebrate their combined 38 years of service to Augsburg, as well as say a fond farewell to our upcoming student graduates.

This celebration will be potluck style with book-themed dishes where puns are welcome (for example, “Olives or Twix,” “Infinite Chex,” “Curious Gruyère,” etc.) You’re welcome to bring something to share with or without a pun–or just yourselves! Stop by whenever you like.

Days in May: Critical Response Process – Wednesday 5/8

submitted by alekna@augsburg.edu

At Days in May, please join me (and your wonderful colleagues!) for an interactive and engaging day of all things Critical Response Process.

On Wednesday, May 8th from 10:15 am – 2:45 pm (with lunch break) in Oren 201, two sessions will focus on Critical Response Process; you are welcome to attend either or both. The first session will focus on a demonstration of the full process and the second will explore the variations and applications across classroom contexts.

Developed by MacArthur fellow recipient Liz Lerman, Critical Response Process (CRP) is a method for giving and getting feedback that centers students and focuses on growing in-progress work. Further, the principles of CRP can guide our informal interactions and choices, helping teachers and students learn to communicate and engage more fully in learning.

Reach out with questions and see you there! – Mallory Alekna, music, alekna@augsburg.edu

Critical Response Process – Formal Demonstration (10:15 am – 12 pm). During the workshop, attendees will experience a full demonstration of CRP and consider how these ideas apply to their individual classroom.

Critical Response Process – Variations to Foster Engagement & Agency in Your Classroom (1 – 2:45 pm). Attendees will explore the principles embedded in each step of CRP. Further, attendees will experience variations that can be implemented with students. Implementing CRP can help students to deeply engage with their learning, and foster their sense of agency. Attendees will discuss how to apply these ideas to their classrooms.
