Augsburg’s Textbook Affordability Working Group invites you to fill out our brief survey about how well you are able to afford the books and other materials required for your classes. We’ll use this information to help us understand whether the cost of course materials is a barrier for Auggies, so it’s important to hear from as many students as possible.

Online Survey – Chance to Win $100 Gift Card

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

2024 Zyzzogeton Student Research Symposium – April 16

Augsburg celebrates the creativity and scholarship of undergraduate students with its annual Zyzzogeton Student Research Symposium. The symposium falls at the end of each academic year and is a culmination of achievement featuring work across departments.

This year Zyzzogeton will feature posters from more than 50 undergraduate researchers in the science, social science and humanity disciplines.

Zyzzogeton will take place on Tuesday, April 16, 3 – 4:30pm in Hagfors Center. There will be a convocation schedule for that day and no classes scheduled during the event time, so we hope that all students, faculty and staff are able to attend!

Connecting in the Face of Climate Change: Workshop Today

Connecting in the Face of Climate Change

In this interactive lunch and workshop, we will be exploring ways to address climate anxiety through connective practices. Gather together with other members of the Augsburg community to explore place-based practices for reconnecting with ourselves, each other, and the rest of the natural world. We will start with a brief introduction and then tour the Augsburg Urban Arboretum together, stopping along the way to experiment with practices for remembering and restoring connections to the larger communities of which we are a part, as well as with our own sense of grounding and vitality. A locally-sourced bag lunch from Laune Bread will be available on a first come first served based for up to twenty participants!

Time: Friday, 4/12/24, 12:30- 2 PM.

Location: Meet in the Community Garden.

The Sverdrup Visiting Scientist Program welcomes Dr. Bala Chaudhary, Associate Professor Of Environmental Studies at Dartmouth College. In her Convocation Lecture titled “Strategies for Anti-racist Action in STEM”, Chaudhary will explain how to create, nurture, and sustain cultures of inclusion in belonging in science (Tuesday, April 16, Hoversten Chapel, 11:00 AM). Please note the Convocation Schedule for adjusted class times on this day.

Dr. Chaudhary will also attend, mingle, and talk to students about the Zyzzogeton Research Symposium and other events as well as present a seminar for undergraduate STEM students entitled: “Continent-scale Aerial Dispersal of Fungi” April 15 at 5:00 PM in Hagfors 150.

Act Now: Ask Your Legislators to Invest in the Promise Equalization Scholarship

Last year’s investment by state policymakers in college affordability through the North Star Promise left out one-third of low- and middle-income students earning bachelor’s degrees—those who attend private nonprofit colleges like Augsburg.

New legislation authored this year by Sen. Omar Fateh and Rep. Dan Wolgamott would provide financial aid parity for low- and middle-income students at nonprofit colleges. The PROMISE EQUALIZATION SCHOLARSHIP investment of $13.9 million would mirror how much the state is investing through the North Star Promise to support students at the University of Minnesota, restoring financial aid parity for students at nonprofit colleges.

With the new Promise Equalization Scholarship, the State of Minnesota would help make college more affordable and reduce student debt for those students at nonprofit colleges with the most need—just as the North Star Promise Scholarship has done for low- and middle-income students at public and tribal colleges. An estimated 13,000 students would receive an average scholarship of about $1,000, helping low- and middle-income students who currently receive the Minnesota State Grant. Here at Augsburg, about 1,400 undergraduates would benefit from the new scholarship. Because there is a large surplus in the appropriation for the North Star Promise, this can be accomplished without any additional state funding.

The Minnesota Private College Council has put together an easy way to contact your legislators—it only takes a minute.

Ask your state senator and representative to invest in the Promise Equalization Scholarship.

Farewell Gathering for Dixie Shafer

Please join us on Wednesday, April 17th from 1:00-3:00 in the Marshall room to celebrate Dixie Shafer’s nearly 25 years at Augsburg. Dixie was the inaugural Director of Augsburg’s McNair Scholars program and has spent the last 20 years directing the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity. Dixie is moving out of higher education and pursuing a new career in development with Northern Star Scouting. Dixie’s last day at Augsburg will be Friday, April 19th.

The proposal consists of an introduction (p. 1), an executive summary (p. 2), and an overview of the rationale and proposed revisions to our undergraduate general education curriculum (pp. 3 – 11).

I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

2024 Zyzzogeton Student Research Symposium – April 16

Augsburg celebrates the creativity and scholarship of undergraduate students with its annual Zyzzogeton Student Research Symposium. The symposium falls at the end of each academic year and is a culmination of achievement featuring work across departments.

This year Zyzzogeton will feature posters from more than 50 undergraduate researchers in the science, social science and humanity disciplines.

Zyzzogeton will take place on Tuesday, April 16, 3 – 4:30pm in Hagfors Center. There will be a convocation schedule for that day and no classes scheduled during the event time, so we hope that all students, faculty and staff are able to attend!

Research on Caffeine and Reaction Time

Hello my name is Munira Jama. I’m an undergraduate student in the Health, Physical Education and Exercise Science department at Augsburg University, alongside my co-investigators, Moyin Abiodun, Annika Rudolph, and Natalie Delgado. We are conducting a study as part of our HPE 303L Advanced Human Anatomy and Physiology lab under the supervision of our advisor Tara Mader, Ph.D; a professor in the Health, Physical Education and Exercise Science department.

We would like to invite you to participate in a research study on the effects of caffeine on reaction time. You were selected as a possible participant because you are a student at Augsburg University. Please read this entire email before agreeing to participate. If you have any questions now or later, you may contact any of the researchers or our advisor.

If you agree to be in this study, you’ll be weighed prior to starting the study, drink caffeine, and have your reaction time measured. In total, participation time will be approximately 40 minutes. Caffeine doses will be administered within safe limits depending on participants weight (3 mg per kg) there will be no abnormal side effects.

Eclipse TODAY: Rain or Shine

The Solar Eclipse is TODAY. Join us outside Hagfors Center on the patio from 1pm – 3pm to watch as the Moon moves in front of the Sun. Here in Minnesota, about 75% of the Sun will be blocked by the Moon, with maximum coverage occurring around 2pm. We will have several different Sun-safe viewing options available (weather permitting), including solar telescopes, eclipse glasses, a sunspotter, and more! If it’s cloudy and we can’t observe the Sun ourselves, you can still join us to watch the NASA livestream of the eclipse.

Schield Presents Statistical Literacy at AAC&U General Education Conference

Milo Schield, faculty Emeritus in the department of Business Administration, is giving a paper (Statistical Literacy: Quantitative Rhetoric for the 21 Century) at the 2024 AAC&U conference on General Education in their “Innovation and Emerging Ideas” session Friday April 12. Schield is teaching Statistical Literacy at New College of Florida and online at the University of New Mexico. Statistical literacy is designed for data consumers. It has less than a 30% overlap with traditional statistics courses which are designed for data producers. Statistical literacy studies how everyday statistics are constructed and manipulated. It doesn’t use computer software or Algebra. It has a strong focus on the use of ordinary English to describe and compare rates and percentages (conditional probabilities) presented in statements, tables and graphs. It deals with disparities and how they can be changed by the context (what is taken into account) without taking a position on whether these disparities are due to discrimination. This course is being required for graduate students in statistics at the University of New Mexico. Students like this math-English critical thinking course. Most agree or strongly agree that Statistical Literacy should be required of all college students for graduation. Kendall-Hunt published Schield’s Statistical Literacy textbook in 2023.

Meal Train for the Department of Education

There are no words to describe the passing of Dr. Jennie Diaz. The Education Department is working hard to support Augsburg students during this time and also grieving the loss of their beloved friend and colleague. After asking our colleagues in the Education Department what we could do to support them during this difficult time, a meal train surfaced. So, we created a meal train and thought we would share it with Department Chairs so different departments or individuals could have an opportunity to volunteer.

For the dates listed:

Tuesdays would be a meal for 8-10 people to drop off at noon (a fridge, microwave, coffee maker are available)

dietary restrictions: no pork, caffeine is split — two members are fasting for Ramadan

cold or reheat works best as folks teach across the full day and late into the evening

homemade or delivery is all deeply appreciated.

Thursdays would be dropping off dessert, snacks, or beverages (same details as above)

Also, anyone can donate gift cards for Grubhub or DoorDash — the Education Department could have the option to order in what they need as well. Auggie Wins a Goldwater

Luke Omodt, a junior majoring in physics and chemistry, has been named a Goldwater Scholar, which is the top STEM award in the country. Goldwater named 438 scholars across the country, seven of whom come from MN colleges and universities. Luke is currently doing computational materials science research with Professor Hickox-Young in physics and will be working with him this summer funded by Dean and Amy Sundquist. In the past Luke conducted research with Professor Dasgupta in physics and at the U of M and Cornell University. Congratulations Luke!

Auggie Wins a Fulbright

Congratulations to Emma Joswiak-McLaughlin for being awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Bulgaria! Emma is a senior graduating this coming May with a degree in Secondary Education: Communication Arts and Literature. She is heavily involved in the Augsburg community as a member of the National Communication Studies honor society, Lambda Pi Eta, and the National Education Association’s Aspiring Educators Club. Emma has also worked for Augsburg’s Writing Center for two years as a tutor and is currently student-teaching at Southwest High School in Minneapolis. To prepare for her Fulbright grant, Emma has been volunteering at a number of animal rescue organizations, learning Bulgarian in her spare time, and trying not to poison her loved ones with her attempts at cooking Bulgarian cuisine. Kudos to Emma!

Elizabeth Goff ’25 is majoring in psychology and has a double minor in studio art and religion. She won the Critical Language Scholarship Spark, which teaches a full year of a language critical to the U.S. Over the summer Elizabeth will be studying Russian virtually. Only 10% of applicants win the award nationwide. She hopes to use this new knowledge to help her with her research in the future. Congratulations Liz!

TODAY: Greenhouse First Thursday

The Augsburg Biology Department’s rooftop greenhouse grows an appreciation for and deeper understanding of the plants of our planet. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Thursday of every month during the semester, from noon to 3pm. Vocation Chapel on Tuesday with Kristen Chamberlain

On Tuesday, April 9, Kristen Chamberlain, Associate Professor of Communication Studies, Film, and New Media, will share her story in the next installment of the “Uncovering Vocation Series.” Uncovering Vocation is co-sponsored by the Christensen Center for Vocation.
Kristen earned her PhD in Communication Studies from North Dakota State University in 2007. She has been teaching a variety of classes as part of the Department of Communication Studies, Film, and New Media since the fall of 2007. Kristen is particularly passionate about environmental communication and has identified as an environmentalist since 9th grade. She is also always ready to talk about the media, favorite books, and cats.

Research on Caffeine and Reaction Time

Hello my name is Munira Jama. I’m an undergraduate student in the Health, Physical Education and Exercise Science department at Augsburg University, alongside my co-investigators, Moyin Abiodun, Annika Rudolph, and Natalie Delgado. We are conducting a study as part of our HPE 303L Advanced Human Anatomy and Physiology lab under the supervision of our advisor Tara Mader, Ph.D; a professor in the Health, Physical Education and Exercise Science department.

We would like to invite you to participate in a research study on the effects of caffeine on reaction time. You were selected as a possible participant because you are a student at Augsburg University. Please read this entire email before agreeing to participate. If you have any questions now or later, you may contact any of the researchers or our advisor.

If you agree to be in this study, you’ll be weighed prior to starting the study, drink caffeine, and have your reaction time measured. In total, participation time will be approximately 40 minutes. Caffeine doses will be administered within safe limits depending on participants weight (3 mg per kg) there will be no abnormal side effects.

Online Survey – Chance to Win $100 Gift Card

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

The Augsburg Biology Department’s rooftop greenhouse grows an appreciation for and deeper understanding of the plants of our planet. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Thursday of every month during the semester, from noon to 3pm.
