Recipients of the Outstanding Staff Award provide exceptional service to others, work collaboratively across divisions or departments, demonstrate a clear commitment to equity and inclusion, and enhance the objectives of their department and the mission of Augsburg University through creativity, innovation, and hard work.

The Newcomer Award recognizes a staff person who has made a significant impact on campus life in a short amount of time. Staff who have been at Augsburg for two years or less (as of March 1, 2024) are eligible to receive this award.
Staff Senate will award five Outstanding Staff awards and one Newcomer award during the in-person event on April 17th.

The deadline to order commencement regalia from Herff Jones online is Monday, April 1, 2024.

In order to participate in the 2024 commencement ceremony, undergraduate students will need a cap, gown, and tassel. Master/doctoral students will need a cap, gown, tassel, and hood. Online Survey – Chance to Win $100 Gift Card

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

We are looking for adults aged 55+ to participate in research on Social Interactions with Others by engaging in a structured conversation with another person virtually using Zoom. If you know someone who is 55+ you can let them know about this A-mail and see if they might be interested in participating. The experiment takes about an hour, and as a benefit for participating you will receive a $5 Target gift card, or we will make a $5 donation in your name to Open Arms of MN which provides meals to terminally ill and homebound Minnesotans. Plus there will be one randomly selected grand prize winner on June 1st who will also receive a $100 Target Gift Card!

The basic technology skills required are:

* Have a valid email address.
* Participants must have access to a computer as this study can only be performed using a computer (desktop or laptop). We don’t recommend using a phone.

Fluent in Spanish? Be a Debate Judge for the Spanish Debate League

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is looking for Spanish-speaking adults to judge our Spanish Debate League. This program helps middle and high school students build confidence, grow their academic skills, improve their fluency, and connect with other Spanish speakers in the Twin Cities.

*NO DEBATE EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED, BUT YOU MUST BE FLUENT IN SPANISH!*

You will earn $55 for each tournament you judge. We will provide transportation if necessary.

Tournaments will happen at the following dates and times:

Thurs. 4/11, South HS(tentative location), 4-7 PM

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2024 admission. Sophomores and Juniors with at least 3 semesters remaining (not graduating prior to Fall 2025) are eligible to apply as long as they meet the additional requirements listed below. McNair admits students from all majors, though preference is given to applicants that are interested in pursuing a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. Refer to the McNair website (https://www.augsburg.edu/mcnair/) for more information.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through coursework, academic advising, workshops, and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($6000) with an Augsburg faculty member during Summer of 2025.

The McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, applicants must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred). Unsure if you qualify? The most efficient way to make sure you’re informed when Augsburg cancels in-person classes or makes other changes is to sign up for Augsburg’s Emergency Notification text messages. You can do this (or confirm that you are already registered) by clicking “Emergency Notifications” in the left-hand menu on Inside Augsburg. Talk Abstract:
Math Pathways and Corequisite models are reforms to introductory and college level mathematics that have increased student success and reduced equity gaps in gateway college mathematics completion and early credit attainment for students. These reforms are an important foundation to Minnesota State’s Equity 2030 goal and Guided Learning Pathways framework. Augsburg University is an important partner institution with Minnesota State in higher education in Minnesota and a significant transfer institution for 2YC students across Minnesota State. Contextualizing Math Pathways and Corequisite model reforms within program requirements at Augsburg University will support local conversations that can support successful transfer for students.

Speaker Bio:
Megan Breit-Goodwin teaches Mathematics and Statistics at Anoka-Ramsey Community College. Anoka-Ramsey Community College is a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, and a partner with Augsburg University in the Auggie Plan. Megan served as a Faculty Coordinator for the Minnesota State Mathematics Pathways Project from 2021 – 2023. She also worked with the Charles A. Dana Center at The University of Texas at Austin and the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) on a 50-state scan of developmental mathematics models in the United States in 2023. When not teaching or working on college mathematics reforms, she might be found ringing handbells, walking a dog, or baking something delicious.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is looking for Spanish-speaking adults to judge our Spanish Debate League. This program helps middle and high school students build confidence, grow their academic skills, improve their fluency, and connect with other Spanish speakers in the Twin Cities.

You will earn $55 for each tournament you judge. We will provide transportation if necessary.

Online Survey – Chance to Win $100 Gift Card

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

The Soil and The Story: Free Exhibition at the UMN through April 19

The Goldstein Museum of Design’s latest exhibition, The Soil and The Story, celebrates Black Soilship in the Black Belt by highlighting 12 farms researched in the last three years across Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. Its organizers, bridging the College of Design and the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences, invite you to explore the relationships between science, nature, history, and culture–here and wherever you stand.

There is no U.S. agricultural history without the expertise and labor of Black people. Black farmers, horticulturists, scientists, and inventors have revolutionized the way our agricultural system functions. During the Great Migration six million Black people moved north and west to escape racial violence, economic and educational disadvantage, and the oppression of Jim Crow laws.

But many Black farmers remained. They liberate and heal both themselves and the soil by incorporating ancestral African traditions and indigenous land knowledge. The voices of Black farmers are essential to the knowledge and practices of U.S. soil health today and the design of systems and policies for the future.

This exhibition is organized by Tiffany LaShae, MS Land and Atmospheric Science, College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences, with Terresa Moses, Assistant Professor, Graphic Design and Director of Design Justice, College of Design.

The exhibit is in the HGA Gallery in Rapson Hall on the East Bank Minneapolis Campus of the University of Minnesota. Primary entrances are open to the public during regular business hours.

Augsburg University recently announced an agreement to sell the property to the Somali Museum of Minnesota to develop a permanent museum facility and cultural center on the former Bethany Lutheran Church site at 2511 E. Franklin Avenue.

Augsburg has worked with Redesign to identify a financially sustainable, community-serving use for the property that contributes to the vitality of the East Franklin corridor. During the 2023 legislative session, the Somali Museum was approved for state funding to advance the project.

Neighbors and community members are invited to attend a community gathering about the past, present, and future of 2511 East Franklin Avenue on Saturday, April 27, from 12:30 PM – 3:30 PM at Matthews Recreation Center (2318 29th Ave. S). Please join us to learn about the Somali Museum and its vision for the site. Participants will be invited to share stories about the site’s history and place in Seward.

In certain languages the words for “history” and “story” are the same, as in French (histoire) or Russian (история). “History” usually implies an accurate account of past events, while “story” usually refers to events that may or may not accurately reflect on the past, embellished as necessary by a “storyteller.” But in this distinction, race is rarely mentioned. Anyone, irrespective of race, can write histories or tell stories, yet with remarkable consistency in the academic study of music in the U.S., our histories have been written by white persons, usually men, passing from generation to generation with little divergence from narratives of “great works” of the “western canon.” And when a nonwhite voice challenges the white narrative, efforts to stifle that voice are swift and severe. In this talk I’ll expand on music’s histories and stories, and explain why the common American music curriculum is still segregated along racial lines. I’ll then suggest that we need to desegregate it and foreground race in our discussions so that all racial musics, and musical races, have a seat at the table and a voice in the conversation.

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2024 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2025 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2025. Students from all majors are welcome to apply, though preference is given to applicants that are interested in pursuing a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. The priority deadline to apply is March 28; however, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all participant slots are filled.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through coursework, academic advising, workshops, and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($6000) with an Augsburg faculty member during Summer of 2025.

The McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, applicants must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred). Unsure if you qualify? Online Survey – Chance to Win $100 Gift Card

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

In certain languages the words for “history” and “story” are the same, as in French (histoire) or Russian (история). “History” usually implies an accurate account of past events, while “story” usually refers to events that may or may not accurately reflect on the past, embellished as necessary by a “storyteller.” But in this distinction, race is rarely mentioned. Anyone, irrespective of race, can write histories or tell stories, yet with remarkable consistency in the academic study of music in the U.S., our histories have been written by white persons, usually men, passing from generation to generation with little divergence from narratives of “great works” of the “western canon.” And when a nonwhite voice challenges the white narrative, efforts to stifle that voice are swift and severe. In this talk I’ll expand on music’s histories and stories, and explain why the common American music curriculum is still segregated along racial lines. I’ll then suggest that we need to desegregate it and foreground race in our discussions so that all racial musics, and musical races, have a seat at the table and a voice in the conversation.

We are looking for adults aged 55+ to participate in research on Social Interactions with Others by engaging in a structured conversation with another person virtually using Zoom. If you know someone who is 55+ you can let them know about this A-mail and see if they might be interested in participating. The experiment takes about an hour, and as a benefit for participating you will receive a $5 Target gift card, or we will make a $5 donation in your name to Open Arms of MN which provides meals to terminally ill and homebound Minnesotans. Plus there will be one randomly selected grand prize winner on June 1st who will also receive a $100 Target Gift Card!

The basic technology skills required are:

* Have a valid email address.
* Participants must have access to a computer as this study can only be performed using a computer (desktop or laptop). We don’t recommend using a phone.
* Your computer must have camera and microphone abilities.
* Individuals need to be able to fill out an online survey. You will be asked to complete short online surveys before and after the online Zoom conversation session.

Updated Guidance for COVID-19 and Other Respiratory Viruses

On March 1, 2024, the CDC released updated respiratory virus guidance in response to the decreasing risk that COVID-19 poses to the population. This updated guidance includes strategies to protect people at highest risk of getting seriously ill and applies to COVID-19 as well as other common viral respiratory illnesses like flu and RSV.

Students, faculty, and staff no longer need to complete the Augsburg self-reporting form following a positive COVID-19 test or exposure. Please follow CDC recommendations to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses when you’re sick.

STAY HOME WHEN YOU’RE SICK
Stay home and away from others (including people you live with who are not sick) if you have respiratory virus symptoms that aren’t better explained by another cause, including fever, chills, fatigue, cough, runny nose, and headache, among others.

WHEN SYMPTOMS IMPROVE
You can go back to your normal activities when, for at least 24 hours, BOTH are true: your symptoms are getting better overall AND You have not had a fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication).

TAKE PRECAUTIONS
When you go back to your normal activities, keep in mind that you may still be able to spread the virus that made you sick, even if you are feeling better. Take added precautions for the next 5 days, such as wearing a high-quality, well-fitting mask and/or testing when you will be around other people indoors.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is looking for Spanish-speaking adults to judge our Spanish Debate League. This program helps middle and high school students build confidence, grow their academic skills, improve their fluency, and connect with other Spanish speakers in the Twin Cities.

*NO DEBATE EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED, BUT YOU MUST BE FLUENT IN SPANISH!*

You will earn $55 for each tournament you judge. We will provide transportation if necessary.

Tournaments will happen at the following dates and times:

Thurs. 4/11, South HS(tentative location), 4-7 PM
Thurs. 4/18, Highland Park HS(tentative location), 3:30-7:30 PM

Paid Simulated GU Patient Needed (4/9)

The Augsburg PA program is seeking people who can become pregnant who are interested in being a genitourinary (GU) simulated patient/model for our Physician Assistant students. The model/patient will provide students with the opportunity to examine reproductive anatomy and learn to perform a thorough and patient-centered pelvic and speculum exam.

GU simulated patients need to have an intact uterus, cervix, and ovaries (no history of hysterectomy). Reimbursement is $65 per pelvic exam, with an average of 6-7 exams per session. Patients must be comfortable with a pelvic and speculum exam. Any questions or concerns can be directed to paprog@augsburg.edu.

TRIO/Student Support Services New Assistant Director

Congratulations to Xia Xiong-Vang ’05 (sociology and communications) as she takes on new leadership as Assistant Director of TRIO/Student Support Services (SSS). In addition to continued advising of program participants and overall day-to-day programming, Xia will assume the coordination and implementation of Summer Bridge, a four to five week academic “camp” for up-to 25 TRIO/SSS-eligible incoming first year students to help them ease their transition to Augsburg University.

Xia is an alumna of our TRIO/SSS program and also holds a master’s from the University of Minnesota in Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Student Personnel. Xia has been with Augsburg’s TRIO/SSS program as full-time staff since 2014.

We are fortunate that Xia agreed to take on this new responsibility in work and partnership with our low income and first generation population!

This week is Biophysics Week, and Augsburg is hosting an Affiliate Event with the Biophysical Society. Anna Gaffney, a University of Chicago graduate student, will share her research in lipid monolayer reorganization, elasticity, and phase transitions with Augsburg University undergraduates. TITLE: Relaxing Under Stress: Developing a Generalized Material Model for Highly Compressed Lipid Monolayers

ABSTRACT: Lipid monolayers are membranes that self-assemble at the air-water interface and are found biologically in the ears, eyes, and lungs. Studying their responses to mechanical forces and stress can supply information to both the lipid and thin sheet fields. Mechanically, highly compressed lipid monolayers can be represented as elastic sheets. In this sense, at some critical stress, these sheets must undergo instabilities. Some do this through out-of-plane collapse, while others relax in-plane. This in-plane relaxation is experimentally observed with fluorescence microscopy (FM) and is characterized as reorganization of condensed domains within a softer matrix. These different modes of instability are accessible by tuning lipid monolayer softness, inspiring our search for a generalized material model with similar tunability. The elastic models that are currently used to describe out-of-plane collapse have been unsuccessful in capturing in-plane relaxation. We hypothesize this is because the matrix is relaxing through strain localization in the form of shear banding. Simulation results from models that incorporate FM-derived condensed domain morphology show that if we trigger shear banding in the matrix around domains, the domains can reorganize and reproduce the experimental in-plane relaxation morphology. Our findings expand understanding of lipid monolayer mechanical response and can be applied to broader research in other thin sheet systems as well.

Paid GU SIM Patient Opportunity (4/9)
