Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Campus Closed Tuesday, November 5

Election day is November 5th, and since it is a University holiday, most buildings on campus will be closed. The following buildings will remain open on November 5th:

– Christensen Center: Open 5:00AM to 8:00PM due to it being a polling location
– Lindell Library: Open 9:00AM to 5:00PM
– Kennedy/Melby: Open normal hours, no open gym

All other buildings will not be accessible by fob, except for Faculty and Staff with pre-approved access. If you have an emergency and need to access a building that is closed on November 5, please contact the Department of Public Safety at (612) 330-1717; access to closed buildings will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

Applications Are Now Open for the PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2025 (graduating by May ‘27)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Monday, November 18th, 2024 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Monday, November 25th, 2024 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

The PRISM Scholarship Program is funded by NSF Award #2030638 through August 2025. Scholarships awarded Fall 2025 and beyond are contingent on continued funding.

Funding for PRISM is provided through the National Science Foundation (NSF) S-STEM program which provides support for high-achieving STEM students with financial need at Augsburg University, Century College, Minneapolis College, and Normandale Community College.

Capitol Pathways Program – Paid Internships at the State Capitol – Applications Due November 15

Capitol Pathways is a paid spring internship program for BIPOC college students. With the long-term goal of making Minnesota state government and policymaking more representative of our diverse communities, our program provides students leadership, legislative and career readiness training alongside an immersive internship experience with an organization working in policy during the legislative session. This is a spring internship from January – May, 2025.

Our guest presenter will be Ama Asantewaa, Student Outreach Manager. This workshop will explain how to effectively complete the application process for the SciTech Internship Program. The mission of SciTech is to connect college students majoring in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to paid internships in small to mid-sized companies.

Central Service Closed November 5

Central Service (Copy Center, Shipping/Receiving and Mailroom) will be closed on Nov. 5th

There will be no USPS mail pick up that day. Please make sure to mail all ballets by Nov. 4, 2024. The USPS picks up the outgoing mail from Shipping/Receiving by 1:30pm. After that you will need to take your ballets to a Post Office location to have it postmarked on time.

New Staff Position: Director of Public Safety

Summary of Position

The Director of Public Safety directs the University’s security and environmental health and safety functions; including personnel, budgets, systems, policies and procedures. This position develops and maintains strategic plans and comprehensive initiatives for the management of risk with additional consideration directed at international study abroad sites.

Primary Responsibilities

– Individual/Asset Protection: Develop and administer resources focused on comprehensive plans promoting a safe learning and working environment for students, guests, faculty, and staff. Identify departmental needs, develop policies and procedures, and assist with investigations and documentation. Responsible for Campus Security Act compliance and other required reports.

– Transportation Administration: Provide oversight of the assessment and management of campus transportation and parking needs, policies, plans, and enforcement.

– Communications: Oversee campus switchboard, dispatch, and emergency/on-call communications.

– Budgets/Procurement: Prepare annual department budget and manage expenditures. Approve supply and equipment purchases and identify suppliers and resources.

– Team Leadership: Assign and control flow of work, managing operational and capital fiscal resources, hiring, and onboarding, ensuring training for and managing performance of employees, students, and third party services associated with public safety, communications, and transportation services.

– On-Call Responsibilities: Serves in an on-call capacity to ensure emergencies are adequately addressed.

– Conduct/Title IX: Works with the University’s conduct and Title IX teams to help enforce University’s standards of conduct, including investigating and/or adjudicating alleged violations.

– External Relationships: Works with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, and maintains ongoing partnerships with local law enforcement, first responders, and other support organizations associated with emergency preparedness, response, and recovery.

– Crime Prevention: Ensure training for faculty, staff, and students across the University in work-safety, crime prevention, loss control, emergency procedures, and personal safety; conduct safety inspections.

– Systems: Conduct needs assessment and ensure effectiveness of safety and security systems: locks, fire and security alarms, card access, CCTVs, dispatch/reporting/record keeping software, etc.

Additional Responsibilities

– Workers Compensation: Coordinate with Human Resources in reducing work injuries; ensure remediation of environmental problems (e.g., ergonomics); investigation, reporting.

– Other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor(s).

Work Environment and Physical Demands

– Typical work environment is an office with regular computer and phone use. Sedentary work for long periods of time.

– Occasional strenuous physical conditions or potentially extreme temperature conditions, such as medical or security emergencies, indoors or outdoors.

– Exposure to irritating noise levels or substances such as in emergencies, chemicals, mace.

– Intense work environment associated with infrequent encounters with hostile or injured people.

– Occasional long or irregular hours including some weekends and evenings.

– Occasional travel.

Research.gov Users – New Multifactor Authentication Required for Login

The National Science Foundation has implemented new security measures for logging into research.gov. You are now required to add a multifactor authentication (MFA) method to your account in order to sign into research.gov. A common way to do this is to set up a Passkey on your smartphone.

Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program Requirement Reminder

During the June 9, 2020, town hall for faculty and staff, President Pribbenow announced seven new equity initiatives born out of response to the murder of George Floyd and Augsburg’s renewed commitment to accelerate and expand upon our university’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion during a national moment of racial and social justice reawakening. One of these initiatives was the requirement of Augsburg faculty and staff to complete the University’s Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program and stay in good-standing every year following completion.

National First-Generation College Celebration Week – November 4-8

November 8th was selected as the date for the annual National First-Generation College Celebration to honor the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965. The HEA was passed to ensure that everyone has access to higher education, regardless of income. In recognition of First-Generation College Celebration Day, the departments of TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO McNair Scholars, and Multicultural Life will be hosting events that highlight the first-generation college experience during the week of November 4th. These events are geared towards students but all are welcome to attend! *There will be a raffle for everyone who attends and signs in! Prizes include vintage TRIO gear and other swag!*

Post-Election Gathering for Faculty and Staff

Do you need a place to bring your anxiety, expectations and other feelings around the 2024 election? Would you like to debrief our nation’s elections with members of our staff and faculty community?  The Provost’s Office, Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship and Campus Ministry are partnering to host two Post-Election Day Gatherings for staff and faculty on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.

An in-person gathering is scheduled for 9am in Hoversten Chapel and a virtual gathering is scheduled for 4pm on ZOOM. Augsburg faculty and staff are invited to attend. The purpose of these gatherings is to make space for connection and care for our staff and faculty as we move through the elections, and to offer support and resources as we care for our students and wider community.

Empathy in Action: Toy Drive and Bake Sale Hosted by CRS301-A and POL459-A

Empathy in Action is a student-led project focused on raising donations for a local family shelter. We will be hosting a toy drive and a bake sale, where people can donate new or gently used toys and buy baked goods. All proceeds will go towards helping the shelter. As a part of our work, we hope to raise awareness about the struggles local families are facing in the Twin Cities, while also bringing the community together to support them. This event will take place November 6th & 7th in the Christensen Center from 11:00a.m.-1:00 p.m.
