Applications Now Open for PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2025 (graduating by May ‘27)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Monday, November 18th, 2024 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Monday, November 25th, 2024 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

The PRISM Scholarship Program is funded by NSF Award #2030638 through August 2025. Scholarships awarded Fall 2025 and beyond are contingent on continued funding.

Funding for PRISM is provided through the National Science Foundation (NSF) S-STEM program which provides support for high-achieving STEM students with financial need at Augsburg University, Century College, Minneapolis College, and Normandale Community College.

Finish Your Augsburg Experience Requirement for Free with MN Urban Debate League

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, makes debate teams possible in Twin Cities schools for 1,400+ students! For the first time, MNUDL is now an Augsburg Experience program.

You can support our youth and gain valuable skills as part of the AUGEX5B Special Immersion: MN Urban Debate League course.

Benefits of participating:
• This counts toward your Augsburg Experience requirement, but it’s a 0-credit course, so you do NOT have to pay for participation.
• No specific major requirement!
• By participating, you can become qualified to judge multiple types of debate, which can lead to future paying gigs with the MNUDL!

The spring semester course will take place from 12:30-1:30 PM on Fridays. The location will be the Anderson Hall basement (near the Campus Cupboard and MNUDL office.)

You’ll complete 40 hours supporting the MNUDL (20 must be completed off-campus.)

First-years and sophomores: Address a community need with a 2026 Phillips Scholars summer project!

Phillips Scholars create and test innovative ideas that address community needs — running their own programming in the summer of 2026. There’s support along the way, with the students coming together starting this May and throughout the 2025-26 academic year. Scholars receive more than $9,000 in scholarships and stipends.

Ten students from any of the Minnesota private colleges listed here will be named Phillips Scholars. Financial need is one of the criteria.

Phillips Scholars Program – Students take on community problems and receive scholarships

The Phillips Scholars Program application for the 2025-26 cohort is open until February 28, 2025. Phillips Scholars create and test innovative ideas that address community problems — running their own summer programming. There’s support along the way, with the students coming together to develop their leadership skills and prepare for their projects. Scholars receive more than $9,000 in scholarships and stipends. Ten students from 15 eligible Minnesota private colleges and universities will be selected each year.

Phillips Scholars Program & Application

New Staff Position: Assistive Technology and Accommodations Specialist

Summary of Position

In collaboration with the Director and Disability Specialists, the Assistive Technology & Accommodations Specialist develops the strategic vision and oversees the implementation of accommodations for students with disabilities as well as supervises student employees within the department. They manage all aspects of assistive technology, alternative format textbooks and course materials, testing accommodations, and note taking. This position also works closely with the CLASS/Disability Resources Director to develop, implement and evaluate systems and processes that support the provision of accommodations. They are a subject matter expert and partner with campus stakeholders to consult on accessible web and information technology.

Primary Responsibilities

– Conduct Assistive Technology assessments with students and partner with them to implement, install, train, and follow up on recommendations.
– Facilitate and manage the production and evaluation of alternative format textbooks and course materials; receive requests; convert materials, work to ensure students receive materials in a timely manner; collaborate with bookstore and faculty.
– Facilitate and supervise provision of testing accommodations for students; schedule tests including proctors and assistive technology; proctor as necessary.
– Hire, train, and supervise student workers including test proctors, note takers, lab and office assistants; maintain work-study budget.
– Research, preview, evaluate, and purchase Assistive Technology.
– Budget oversight responsibilities for some restricted and/or endowed funds.
– Provide Web Accessibility guidance and consultation across campus.

Additional Responsibilities

– Maintain, track usage, upgrade, and replace Assistive technology resources as necessary.
– Monitor accommodation implementation systems and update as necessary.
– All other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor(s).

Work Environment and Physical Demands

– Typical work environment is an office. Sedentary work for long periods of time.
– Regular computer and phone use.

Capitol Pathways Program – Paid Internships at the State Capitol – Applications Due TODAY

With the long-term goal of making Minnesota state government and policymaking more representative of our diverse communities, our program provides students leadership, legislative and career readiness training alongside an immersive internship experience with an organization working in policy during the legislative session. This is a spring internship from January – May, 2025.

Toys and Arts and Crafts Drive

As the holiday season approaches, let’s bring some joy and creativity to local youth! Our COM355: Small Group Communication class is hosting a Toys and Arts & Crafts Drive to collect items for children in our community. What we’re collecting: New or used (good condition) toys for children and art supplies, including crayons, markers, coloring books, craft kits, and more! Our collection days will be 11/18, 11/20, and 11/25 from 10:50 a.m. to 1:40 p.m. We accept donation drop-offs in Christensen Center while tabling and in the Oyaté Commons. COME DONATE!

Staff Senate Hosts Gathering on 11/20

The Staff Senate will host its first casual meet and greet on Wednesday, November 20th from 3:30 – 4:30pm in OCG 100. Come for the whole gathering or drop in as you can.

This will be the first date to gather and share staff experiences with the Senate. Light refreshments will be provided.

Farewell Open House for Lauren Radomski

I am both sad and excited to announce that Lauren Radomski is leaving her position as Assistive Technology/Accommodations Specialist in the CLASS office. Please join us in Lindell 216 for a farewell open house on Tuesday, November 19 at 3:00. p.m. Lauren has contributed so much to Augsburg by coordinating our accommodated testing, helping students find technology to assist them in their work, and consulting with faculty to make their course materials accessible. We share her excitement about her new opportunity, but will truly miss Lauren and her caring and competent work with all of us.
