Applications Are Now Open for the PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2025 (graduating by May ‘27)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Monday, November 18th, 2024 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Monday, November 25th, 2024 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

The PRISM Scholarship Program is funded by NSF Award #2030638 through August 2025. Scholarships awarded Fall 2025 and beyond are contingent on continued funding.

Funding for PRISM is provided through the National Science Foundation (NSF) S-STEM program which provides support for high-achieving STEM students with financial need at Augsburg University, Century College, Minneapolis College, and Normandale Community College.

Capitol Pathways Program – Paid Internships at the State Capitol – Applications Due Friday

Capitol Pathways is a paid spring internship program for BIPOC college students. With the long-term goal of making Minnesota state government and policymaking more representative of our diverse communities, our program provides students leadership, legislative and career readiness training alongside an immersive internship experience with an organization working in policy during the legislative session. This is a spring internship from January – May, 2025.

Phillips Scholars Program – Students Take on Community Problems and Receive Scholarships

The Phillips Scholars Program application for the 2025-26 cohort is open until February 28, 2025. Phillips Scholars create and test innovative ideas that address community problems — running their own summer programming. There’s support along the way, with the students coming together to develop their leadership skills and prepare for their projects. Scholars receive more than $9,000 in scholarships and stipends. Ten students from 15 eligible Minnesota private colleges and universities will be selected each year.

During the June 9, 2020, town hall for faculty and staff, President Pribbenow announced seven new equity initiatives born out of response to the murder of George Floyd and Augsburg’s renewed commitment to accelerate and expand upon our university’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion during a national moment of racial and social justice reawakening. One of these initiatives was the requirement of Augsburg faculty and staff to complete the University’s Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program and stay in good-standing every year following completion.

As part of The Great Northern Festival this coming winter, a faculty from the Art & Design Department is creating an installation piece to raise sustainability awareness.
WE NEED YOUR HELP! We’re collecting clean plastic bags (no need to wash them, but no food residue) for this installation. If you have any plastic bags you’d like to donate, please drop them off in collection boxes: Christensen (outside of the Gallery) by November 15th or on the main floor of Old Main.

Updates to the Augsburg University Retirement Plan beginning in November 2024

Join us for an education session where you can learn about the upcoming changes to the Augsburg University retirement plan, along with actions you may want to consider. The session will be presented by Molly Phelps, TIAA Senior Director, Integrated Solutions, and will be recorded for those who cannot attend.

New features to help you plan and save for your retirement are coming soon. Important plan enhancements will begin in November 2024, and are intended to give you the investment options, services and tools that can help you plan for your retirement savings goals.

What Is Changing:
– New investment offerings
– Able to connect with advisors from NFP and TIAA
– Account number update
– Reduced fees

What’s Not Changing:
– Plan structure (contribution levels) remains the same
– Accounts will be managed by TIAA
– Account access remains the same

Daily Chapel: Rev. Jim Bear Jacobs

Please join us in Hoversten Chapel at 10:40 am to hear Rev. Jim Bear Jacobs share his story in the next installment of our “Living Stories” series co-sponsored by the Religion Department, Interfaith at Augsburg, and Campus Ministry. Born in St. Paul, he is a member of the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican Nation, an American Indian tribe located in central Wisconsin. He has degrees in Pastoral Studies and Christian Theology and has served various churches as youth minister, adult Christian educator, and director of Men’s Ministries. Presently he is parish associate at Church of All Nations Presbyterian Church. He is a cultural facilitator in the Twin Cities and works to raise the public’s awareness of American Indian causes and injustices. He is founder/convener of “Healing Minnesota Stories,” an initiative dedicated to creating events of dialogue, education, and healing, particularly within faith communities. He is currently the Director of Racial Justice for the Minnesota Council of Churches.

Advent Vespers Processional Party

The 45th annual Advent Vespers is just around the corner! Be a part of this wonderful event at the start of the Advent season. We will be in person again at Central Lutheran Church and need many volunteers.

There will be a dress rehearsal on Thursday, December 5th at 8:00 pm in addition to the Advent Vespers services on Friday, December 6th at 7:00 pm and Saturday, December 7th at 2 pm and 5 pm (with a hearty snack between the services). Staff Senate Hosts Gathering on November 20

The Staff Senate will host its first casual meet and greet on Wednesday, November 20th from 3:30 – 4:30pm in OCG 100. Come for the whole gathering or drop in as you can.

This will be the first date to gather and share staff experiences with the Senate. Light refreshments will be provided.

Now Hiring: MNUDL Program Site Visit Specialist

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to 1,400+ Twin Cities middle and high school students. We’re currently hiring for the MNUDL Program Site Visit Specialist position.

The MNUDL Program Site Visit Specialist & Tournament Support (contract position) – will be paid $25/hr to provide site visit and tournament support to MNUDL schools, focusing on new programs created from a Minnesota Humanities Center Grant.

You will support coaches (primarily new teachers) through site visits at practices.

You will also assist in tournament operations.

Maximum number of hours provided by the grant is 720, or approximately 30 hours per week – between mid-November through May. Practices and tournaments take place after school and in the evenings.
