Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2024 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2025 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2025. Students from all majors are welcome to apply, though preference is given to applicants that are interested in pursuing a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. The priority deadline to apply is March 28; however, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all participant slots are filled.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through coursework, academic advising, workshops, and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($6000) with an Augsburg faculty member during Summer of 2025.

The McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, applicants must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred). Unsure if you qualify? Augsburg to Sell Franklin Ave. Property to Somali Museum of MN

Today, Augsburg announced an agreement to sell the property at 2511 East Franklin Avenue to the Somali Museum of Minnesota to develop a permanent museum facility and cultural center on the former Bethany Lutheran Church site.

Since 2020, the university has worked with community-based developer Redesign (formerly Seward Redesign) to identify a financially sustainable, community-serving use for the property that contributes to the vitality of the East Franklin Avenue corridor. The church building and property were donated to Augsburg in May 2020 before the Bethany Lutheran congregation dissolved in September 2021.

Redesign ultimately connected the university and the museum to explore a potential convergence of shared interests for the site. During the 2023 legislative session, the Somali Museum was approved for state funding to advance the project.

Neighbors and community members will be invited to attend a public gathering to learn about the Somali Museum and the vision for the project and to share stories about the site’s history and place in Seward—more details about date and time to come.

Throughout her nearly ten years at Augsburg, Katie has made numerous contributions. In addition to supporting hundreds of students with disabilities, she collaborated with campus partners to increase access, administered the IDI, served as an Act Six mentor, and supported pastoral interns. We are sad to see Katie go and wish her all the best in her new position.

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

We are looking for adults aged 55+ to participate in research on social interactions with others by engaging in a structured conversation with another person virtually using Zoom. The experiment takes about an hour, and as a benefit for participating you will receive a $5 Target gift card, or we will make a $5 donation in your name to Open Arms of MN which provides meals to terminally ill and homebound Minnesotans. Plus there will be one randomly selected grand prize winner on June 1st who will also receive a $100 Target Gift Card!

The basic technology skills required are:

* Participants must have access to a computer as this study can only be performed using a computer (desktop or laptop). We don’t recommend using a phone.
* Your computer must have camera and microphone abilities.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, provides academic competitive debate program for middle and high school students in the Twin Cities Metro.

We’re seeking caring adults with speech & debate experience to serve as middle school debate judges! A tournament with no judges is just a scrimmage- and while practice is great, we know our students want the opportunity to compete with pride! That’s why we are paying judges with experience in forensics (speech or debate) $55 per tournament for the next 5 in-person, local meets:

• Tuesday 03/05 from 3:15-7:15 PM
• Wednesday 03/06 from 3:15-7:15 PM
• Thurs 03/07 from 3:15-7:15 PM

Location for all 3 days is Blegen Hall on the UMN Campus – that’s on West Bank, just across the street from Augsburg.

Want to just volunteer? No debate experience is needed. We will train you. Judges facilitate the debate round, listen to students speak, choose a winner, and provide feedback. By judging, you’ll help students grow in their confidence and academic skills!

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is looking for Spanish-speaking adults to judge our Spanish Debate League. This program helps middle and high school students build confidence, grow their academic skills, improve their fluency, and connect with other Spanish speakers in the Twin Cities.

*NO DEBATE EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED, BUT YOU MUST BE FLUENT IN SPANISH!*

You will earn $55 for each tournament you judge. We will provide transportation if necessary.

The Strommen Center is proud to offer a job prep course for those planning to find work after graduation. Beyond the Cap and Gown will be an online, 4 week asynchronous course. You will be led through:

The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Thursday of every month during the semester, from noon to 3pm. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Thursday of every month during the semester, from noon to 3pm. The Augsburg community is invited to come see what we’ve got growing on, enjoy the tropical atmosphere and marvel at hundreds of plant species from all over the world.

Throughout her nearly ten years at Augsburg, Katie has made numerous contributions. In addition to supporting hundreds of students with disabilities, she collaborated with campus partners to increase access, administered the IDI, served as an Act Six mentor, and supported pastoral interns. We are sad to see Katie go and wish her all the best in her new position.

The EAST event will feature KaYing Yang, who will be addressing key issues that Asian students face and provide insights on data disaggregation, aftermath of COVID, and self advocacy to set up for success. The event provides students a space to be aware of the broader issues that may impact their success as a student and how to advocate for themselves. All are welcome to come hear, learn, and discuss key issues impacting Asian students.

KaYing is the President of RedGreen Rivers and KaYing + Community and has over two decades as a dedicated social justice advocate. Her career includes leadership in community organizing, policy engagement, and development efforts globally. Notably, in the mid 1990’s she worked with the Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC) in Washington, DC, addressing disparities in the Asian American community. KaYing’s international roles include the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank Group in the early 2000s. By mid-2000, in Minnesota, she served as the Director of Policy for the Coalition of Asian American Leaders (CAAL). As an entrepreneur, KaYing heads RedGreen Rivers, promoting artisans globally, and KaYing + Community, a nonprofit consulting business. Her distinguished career earned her many recognitions and invitations to be the keynote speaker at major events. She was a recipient of the 2019 Bush Foundation Fellowship, and in 2022 she was appointed to President Biden’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders.

Interested in Research and Graduate School? Apply to the TRIO McNair Scholars Program

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2024 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2025 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2025. Students from all majors are welcome to apply, though preference is given to applicants that are interested in pursuing a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. The priority deadline to apply is March 28; however, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all participant slots are filled.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through coursework, academic advising, workshops, and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($6000) with an Augsburg faculty member during Summer of 2025.

The McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, applicants must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, provides academic competitive debate program for middle and high school students in the Twin Cities Metro.

We’re seeking caring adults with speech & debate experience to serve as middle school debate judges! A tournament with no judges is just a scrimmage- and while practice is great, we know our students want the opportunity to compete with pride! That’s why we are paying judges with experience in forensics (speech or debate) $55 per tournament for the next 5 in-person, local meets:

• Tuesday 03/05 from 3:15-7:15 PM
• Wednesday 03/06 from 3:15-7:15 PM
• Thurs 03/07 from 3:15-7:15 PM

Location for all 3 days is Blegen Hall on the UMN Campus – that’s on West Bank, just across the street from Augsburg.

Want to just volunteer? No debate experience is needed. We will train you. Judges facilitate the debate round, listen to students speak, choose a winner, and provide feedback. By judging, you’ll help students grow in their confidence and academic skills!

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is looking for Spanish-speaking adults to judge our Spanish Debate League. This program helps middle and high school students build confidence, grow their academic skills, improve their fluency, and connect with other Spanish speakers in the Twin Cities.

*NO DEBATE EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED, BUT YOU MUST BE FLUENT IN SPANISH!*

You will earn $55 for each tournament you judge. We will provide transportation if necessary.

We are looking for adults aged 55+ to participate in research on social interactions with others by engaging in a structured conversation with another person virtually using Zoom. The experiment takes about an hour, and as a benefit for participating you will receive a $5 Target gift card, or we will make a $5 donation in your name to Open Arms of MN which provides meals to terminally ill and homebound Minnesotans. Plus there will be one randomly selected grand prize winner on June 1st who will also receive a $100 Target Gift Card!

The basic technology skills required are:

* Participants must have access to a computer as this study can only be performed using a computer (desktop or laptop). We don’t recommend using a phone.
* Your computer must have camera and microphone abilities.

Online Survey – Chance to Win $100 Gift Card

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

Interfaith Scholars: Last Day to Apply

We are currently accepting applications for the 2024-2025 Interfaith Scholar cohort.

Interfaith Scholars is a yearlong student cohort that engages students as partners in ongoing interreligious dialogue and action by exploring methods and best practices for talking about religion/spirituality/worldview in a diverse democracy. Students will engage in community service learning and interfaith events as well as learn from guest speakers from religious communities, business professionals, and other leaders from across sectors. Students accepted into the Interfaith Scholars program receive a $2,000 scholarship.

The cohort meets for the full academic year as a credit based course on Thursday nights from 6:00-9:00 pm. Professor Najeeba Syeed is the primary instructor.

Students from every religious tradition and students without a connection to a religious tradition are encouraged to apply.

We are looking for adults aged 55+ to participate in research on social interactions with others by engaging in a structured conversation with another person virtually using Zoom. The experiment takes about an hour, and as a benefit for participating you will receive a $5 Target gift card, or we will make a $5 donation in your name to Open Arms of MN which provides meals to terminally ill and homebound Minnesotans. The basic technology skills required are:

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2024 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2025 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2025. Students from all majors are welcome to apply, though preference is given to applicants that are interested in pursuing a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. The priority deadline to apply is March 28; however, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all participant slots are filled.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through coursework, academic advising, workshops, and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($6000) with an Augsburg faculty member during Summer of 2025.

The McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, applicants must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred). Unsure if you qualify? My name is Dean Harris, and I am a doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology Department at Augsburg University. I am conducting this study as partial fulfillment of my doctoral degree, with Dr. Patricia Hopkins-Smith as my advisor.

You are being invited to participate in a research study on investigating influences of intrapersonal factors on the relationship between casual sex and mental health. Our study focuses on experiences of casual sex in individuals who identify as single or recently single (i.e., have not been in a relationship longer than one month). As such, if you indicated you were in a relationship for longer than one month, you do not meet our study eligibility criteria. We respect and appreciate individuals in various types of relationships, including open or ethically non-monogamous ones, but our current study’s scope is limited to investigating casual sex in those who identify as single (or recently single). If you agree to this study, I will ask you to complete a survey via Qualtrics. This survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. After completing all the survey questions, you will be invited, if you wish, to provide contact information to enter in the raffle to win one of three $50 gift card prizes, and/or emailed the results at the end of the study’s conclusion.

Hello Auggies! I am a graduate student seeking participants for a research study. I am exploring how one’s ability to recognize and regulate their own and others’ emotions may relate to feelings of depression and social disconnect. Participation in this study will involve completing a series of behavioral health inventories and a demographic screener that will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. These inventories will ask if you have experienced symptoms of depression or loneliness and ask how intensely you experience your everyday emotions. Following completion of these inventories, participants will complete a test online that will walk participants through a variety of different tasks, such as recognition of facial expressions and implied social meanings. This test will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. All participation in this study is done online from the comfort of your own home. Students are invited to participate in this study if you: (1) are between the ages of 18 and 31; (2) have not been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or a personality disorder; (3) have not experienced an interpersonally traumatic life event (i.e., assault by another human being); and (4) are not currently experiencing a major health concern (i.e., life threatening illness/injury or significant transplant/removal surgery).

For your time, participants will be entered into a random lottery drawing for one of three $100 Amazon gift cards!

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is looking for Spanish-speaking adults to judge our Spanish Debate League. This program helps middle and high school students build confidence, grow their academic skills, improve their fluency, and connect with other Spanish speakers in the Twin Cities.

*NO DEBATE EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED, BUT YOU MUST BE FLUENT IN SPANISH!*

You will earn $55 for each tournament you judge. We will provide transportation if necessary.

Do You Have Speech and Debate Experience? Earn $55 Per Tournament Judging Middle Schoolers

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, provides academic competitive debate program for middle and high school students in the Twin Cities Metro.

We’re seeking caring adults with speech & debate experience to serve as middle school debate judges! A tournament with no judges is just a scrimmage- and while practice is great, we know our students want the opportunity to compete with pride! That’s why we are paying judges with experience in forensics (speech or debate) $55 per tournament for the next 5 in-person, local meets:

• Tuesday 03/05 from 3:15-7:15 PM
• Wednesday 03/06 from 3:15-7:15 PM
• Thurs 03/07 from 3:15-7:15 PM

Location for all 3 days is Blegen Hall on the UMN Campus – that’s on West Bank, just across the street from Augsburg.

Want to just volunteer? No debate experience is needed. We will train you. Judges facilitate the debate round, listen to students speak, choose a winner, and provide feedback. By judging, you’ll help students grow in their confidence and academic skills!

Get Paid to Coach Summer Speech & Debate Camp on Augsburg University’s Campus: Apply by March 4

Seeking Summer Speech & Debate Camp Coaches!

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is seeking experienced speech coaches and debate coaches to serve as paid camp staff members at our Minneapolis day camps for 5 weeks in June and July 2024.

Our offerings include advanced and beginner speech camps, policy debate, LD, congressional debate, public forum, and general argumentation camps. There are camps for both middle and high school students. We’re offering 17+ sessions, so we’re sure to have one that fits your schedule and skills! Please note that the majority of roles require speech and debate experience, but our After-care role is open to anyone.

Beyond the Cap and Gown: Conquering the Job Search Maze

The Strommen Center is proud to offer a job prep course for those planning to find work after graduation. Beyond the Cap and Gown will be an online, 4 week asynchronous course. You will be led through:
job search techniques
resume and cover letter writing
interviewing tips
self-care and dealing with rejection
The course is planned to begin after spring break and will involve videos and activities with roughly 1-2 hours of work a week.
