Parking Suspended Until September 6, Midnight

submitted by hartkop1@augsburg.edu

Due to the extremely high influx of requests for parking, ID badges, and general staffing issues. We have suspended parking enforcement until 9/6 at midnight in order for our department to catch up with the requests. We apologize for the inconvenience as our work to rollout the new badge IDs has taken priority.

Please note – parking enforcement being suspended is only for people who have not gotten permits yet due to the lack of response. Enforcement is still applicable for underground structures and over parking, parking in fire lanes, non-designated parking spaces, and ADA spaces(including striped zones). If your vehicle is found in those locations it is subject to ticket and immediate tow.

New DPS Process for Checking Out Keys at Dispatch

submitted by pangala@augsburg.edu

Dear Augsburg Community,

As we begin a new academic year, the Department of Public Safety is making some changes to our protocols. We are integrating updated technology, and managing the increased demands that naturally accompany the start of the fall semester. We are transitioning from fobs to ID Cards for freshman students and new staff. These changes strengthen our ability to serve the campus community. With transitioning from fobs to ID Cards, all individuals will be expected to show proof they are current students or staff at Augsburg University. After confirming that the student or staff are currently affiliated with the university, they will verbally request the keys they require.

A couple of the changes that will impact students and staff that request keys are as follows:

—Students and staff will be expected to leave a current (non expired) government issued picture ID when checking out keys.
—If the keys are not returned within a 24-hour window, the student or staff members’ Augsburg I.D. access card will be deactivated and only reactivated upon returning the keys to the Department of Public Safety Dispatch in the Urness/Mortensen Lobby.
—If you foresee needing a set of keys for longer than the 24-hour window, an official key request must be made in advance through the proper channels to ensure we have an adequate number of key sets available for all students, faculty, and staff.

If you have questions or concerns please reach out the the Department of Public Safety.

What to Do in the Event of a Medical Emergency on Campus

submitted by publicsafety@augsburg.edu

In the event of an accident, illness, or mental health crisis with a student, faculty, staff, or visitor on campus that results in an emergency, please use the following procedures as a guideline. These guidelines have been recently updated by the Department of Public Safety and may represent a change in practice for some departments.

FIRST: CALL 911. Dial 911 directly if you believe medical assistance is required. Provide the building name and floor to the emergency response dispatch. The exact street address is not needed for campus buildings.

THEN: ALERT DPS. After calling 911 (or at the same time if there is a second person available to assist), alert DPS by calling 612-330-1717 or using the Campus Shield app. DPS staff will coordinate with emergency response personnel, facilitate access to campus buildings, and provide triage support as needed before emergency services arrive.

Disabled Student Looking for PCA

submitted by dipaolaz@augsburg.edu

Hi, my name is Zander. I am a Senior, and I am disabled and in a wheelchair. I am looking for a backup PCA to help out when my regular PCA can’t. You do not need to be trained to be a PCA, as I will provide all of the training you will need, as it is not that technical of a job. My PCA comes to my dorm every day to help me with certain tasks that I cannot complete in a timely manner.. You would come when my main PCA needs a day off or can’t make it that day for different reasons, and help me with the tasks that they would usually help me with on that day. Some of the tasks you would do daily are refilling water bottles, refilling humidifiers, and making a bed. Expect this to take 15 or 30 minutes out of your day. Then, on top of that, I also require assistance with bathing once a week. Expect that to take an hour once a week. This job comes with very flexible hours. I will tell you what day I would need you, and you would pick a time on that day that you would come. There is no set required time that you have to come each day. The rate for this job will be $13 an hour; however, you are usually not there longer than an hour, so it usually turns out to $13 per day. If you are interested in helping me out and scheduling an interview, contact me at (612)430-3233 or at dipaolaz@augsburg.edu.

Hungry for Hope: Letters to the Church from Young Adults Is Available Now

submitted by weber3@augsburg.edu

Three years ago at this time, our RIH team was making preparations to host 50 young adults on campus at Augsburg University from across the country. The purpose of this gathering was to listen to the stories of younger generations as they shared their experiences of gratitude, hopefulness and frustration in the church. Collectively these stories spoke to the hunger of this generation for a more hopeful and thriving world. The young adults gathered also shared a belief that God is calling the church to engage seriously in that vision, no matter the challenges.

This gathering unleashed a much longer journey to amplify the voices of younger generations through the creation of a multi-authored book. We are beyond proud and humbled to share that Hungry for Hope: Letters to the church from young adults, is now officially released!

Our local bookstore, Moon Palace books has it available! https://moonpalacebooks.com/item/g2mK5awmMGbRua_p8FxfNg

Disabled Student Looking for a PCA – $13 an Hour

submitted by dipaolaz@augsburg.edu

Scam Email About a Remote Internship

submitted by krajewsk@augsburg.edu

This weekend an email scam was sent with the subject of “INTERNSHIP PROGRAM” or “REMOTE INTERNSHIP.” The email offered a remote internship opportunity. The email was written to appear to come from a non-existent Augsburg department.

This email was an example of an employment scam, which are common. Some key red flags in the email were
– Strange From email address
– Not From an Augsburg address
– A job or internship offer that is unusually good (either pay or hours or lack of work involved)
– It was unexpected
– It referenced a department that does not exist

You can always email your LFC or the Tech Desk if you’re unsure about the validity of an email.

Often your instincts are right and things that seem too good to be true are not real.

New DPS Process for Checking Out Keys at Dispatch

Dear Augsburg Community,

As we begin a new academic year, the Department of Public Safety is making some changes to our protocols.

Save the Date for First-Gen Week

submitted by heisekat@augsburg.edu

First-Gen Week is the first week of November and is an extended celebration of First-Gen Day which takes place on November 8th annually.
First-Gen Day commemorates the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965 by then-President Lyndon B. Johnson. This act created federal financial aid programs to fund students’ educations and made key investments in colleges and universities. Many of these programs, particularly the Federal TRIO programs (such as TRIO/SSS and TRIO McNair), promote postsecondary access, retention, and completion for today’s limited-income, first-generation college students.
First-Gen Week is a time to celebrate first-generation college students, faculty, and staff, as well as their supporters. Consider ways you can celebrate the first-gen folks in your departments, classes, organizations, etc., and stay tuned for information about programming across campus for the first week of November!

New Augsburg Exploration Day and Changes to First-Year First Day

submitted by klobassa@augsburg.edu

Greetings Augsburg Community,

There are changes coming this fall that impact AugSem, Auggie Days, and the Convocation Schedule.

Changes to First Year First Day
In the past, AugSem meetings were a component of First Year First Day. This year, AugSem faculty will not meet with their AugSem class on First Year First Day. Instead, all faculty and staff are encouraged to dress in their Auggie gear or academic regalia to form the traditional clapping tunnel to welcome new students as they process to the opening convocation (Edor Nelson Field – Procession; arrive at 10:15 to line up | Si Melby Gym – Convocation). Following the convocation, first year students will enjoy lunch and will engage with the remainder of the Auggie Days program.

First-year Convocation: Oct. 8, noon – 1 pm, Hoversten Chapel
In addition to opening convocation, this year we will offer a first-year convocation on Wednesday, Oct. 8. First-year convocation is required for all students enrolled in AUG101. This year’s speaker is Xavier Tavera Castro, Assistant Professor of Art at Carleton College. Xavier will discuss his scholarship and what motivates his work, as well as his professional journey and lessons that he has learned.

Augsburg Exploration Day
Also on Wednesday Oct. 8, there will be no afternoon classes to allow time for academic activities and community building. First-year students will participate in one-on-one mentor meetings scheduled throughout the afternoon with their AugSem instructors, a required component of AUG101. Second-year students are invited to celebrate declaring their majors. Each School will host an open house to welcome new majors, and second-year students are strongly encouraged to attend the events. These open houses will also offer a good opportunity for first-year students to build rapport with faculty and students within each School. In addition, various campus offices and student organizations will offer opportunities for connection throughout the afternoon.
