Community Defense Training

submitted by rankiniz@augsburg.edu

As a united University community, we continue to seek ways to offer resources that support faculty and staff, both on and off campus. The need to pay attention to what is happening around us remains.

For those who are interested in community defense training, the following options are available:
• States at the Core, who offer multiple online training sessions each month to a nationwide audience.
• Monarca, a local Minnesota organization that offers several in-person training sessions throughout the greater Twin Cities and western WI.

For those who are interested in attending training in community, Human Resources, the Provost’s Office, and the Post 1/20 Task Force have reserved space on campus, and will be streaming a 90-minute live webinar presented by States at the Core on the following dates:

Wednesday, April 1 (OGC/Oren 201)

The webinars are identical; is not necessary to attend all of them.
• The webinar will begin at 6:00 p.m.
• Augsburg will register as an institution, no individual registration is required.
• As this is a nationwide webinar, the audience is not visible.
• Those who are interested in attending the training off-campus should individually register.

As additional training and resources become available for faculty and staff, we will continue to provide those opportunities to all.

Contact Your Legislators About the MN State Grant Program

submitted by farrisr@augsburg.edu

Did you know that the Minnesota State Grant program supports 62% of Augsburg undergraduate students, with an average grant amount of $6,000?

A $131 million shortfall in funding for the program means that without action, many low- and middle-income students will lose their grants or see them dramatically cut starting next fall.

Lawmakers can prevent these cuts by providing additional funding for the State Grant program during the legislative session that is underway in St. Paul. Augsburg is encouraging policymakers to do just that, speaking up on this with other private nonprofit colleges. It is also critical for individual constituents—including Augsburg students, faculty, and staff—to ask for action on this issue.

If you live in Minnesota, please consider sending a note of your own to the state legislators who represent you, asking them to fully fund the State Grant program. A sample note you can edit and a simple tool for sending it is available from the Minnesota Private College Council.

Learn more and contact your legislators by March 31.

Timely Warning: Sexual Assault

submitted by publicsafety@augsburg.edu

In compliance with the “Timely Warning” provision of the federal Jeanne Clery Campus Security Act, Augsburg University Department of Public Safety (DPS) is giving notice of a situation that represents a serious or continuing threat to students and employees of the University. This timely warning aims to provide information to aid the Augsburg community in protecting themselves after a report of a serious crime.

REPORTED OFFENSE(S): SEXUAL ASSAULT (SEX OFFENSE/RAPE)
On March 17, 2026, at 4:04 a.m., the University’s Title IX Coordinator received an email report of a student who stated they were sexually assaulted in Urness Hall. The report stated that the student invited the suspect (who is believed to be unaffiliated with the Augsburg community) to their Urness Hall residence at approximately 2:00 a.m. on March 17, and that the sexual assault occurred in the room shortly thereafter. The suspect then left the building alone shortly before 3:00 a.m.

Upon further investigation by DPS, a description of the suspect was obtained, and a decision to issue a timely warning was made.

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION
The suspect was described (and confirmed by security footage) as a black male in their late teens or early twenties, 5’ 7” or 5’ 8”, with curly black hair and facial hair. He was wearing a black jacket, black shirt, and black sweatpants. (See DPS website for suspect description disclaimer.)

STATUS
DPS is currently investigating this incident. Anyone who may have information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Minneapolis Police or Augsburg DPS at 612-330-1717.

REPORTING INCIDENTS
Augsburg asks its community members to report any and all concerns that may impact our campus community. If You See Something – Say Something. To report, please contact the Department of Public Safety (DPS) at 612-330-1717. You can also download the CampusShield app (through Apple or Android) to message DPS. We also encourage you to utilize the resources available on the DPS website.

Wednesday, March 25 (OGC/Oren 201)
Wednesday, April 1 (OGC/Oren 201)

The webinars are identical; is not necessary to attend all of them.
• The webinar will begin at 6:00 p.m.
• Augsburg will register as an institution, no individual registration is required.
• As this is a nationwide webinar, the audience is not visible.
• Those who are interested in attending the training off-campus should individually register.

As additional training and resources become available for faculty and staff, we will continue to provide those opportunities to all.

Athletic Field Air Structure

submitted by rjohn@augsburg.edu

Early in the morning this past Sunday, the air structure over Edor Nelson Field experienced a large tear in the fabric, which caused the dome to lose pressure and deflate. There was no one in the dome at the time, and there were no injuries from the event.

The dome had been slated to be taken down in early April. Given the tear in the fabric, we will not be reinflating the air structure this spring. Augsburg’s Facilities crews and workers from the air structure company are working to remove the dome and equipment from the field in order for our teams to practice, weather permitting, as soon as is feasible.

Employees: Navigate Parent PLUS Student Loan Changes

submitted by vachta@augsburg.edu

If you currently hold Parent PLUS student loans, there is a critical deadline this spring that could permanently impact your repayment plan and forgiveness eligibility. As an employee at Augsburg University, you have access to Savi to help you navigate the sweeping changes reshaping the federal student loan system

What’s happening?
New federal rules under the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB) are changing how Parent PLUS loans are managed starting July 1, 2026. This is a “hard cutoff” that could permanently change your financial future.

If you do not consolidate your Parent PLUS loans before the deadline, you risk permanently losing access to:
● Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) plans, which can keep your monthly payments affordable based on what you earn.
● Forgiveness pathways, including Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).

The Deadline: April 1, 2026
While the legal cutoff is July 1, the consolidation process must be fully completed and disbursed by that date, not just started. Because federal processing typically takes 60-90 days, we strongly recommend you submit your consolidation application no later than April 1, 2026.

How Savi Helps
The rules for Parent PLUS borrowers are complex, but your path forward doesn’t have to be. Savi is here to help you:
● Analyze your loans to see if consolidation is necessary.
● Provide step-by-step help to complete consolidation before the deadline.
● Lock in your lowest monthly payment plan after consolidating.

Students: Two Weeks Left to Apply to Be a Christensen Scholar

submitted by myers@augsburg.edu

We are now taking applications for the 2026-2027 cohort of Christensen Scholars. Apply at the link below by Friday March 27, 2026.

Christensen Scholars spend a year in community exploring questions of faith, identity, and vocation through a Christian theological lens. Students should be open to engaging seriously and openly with these topics, but it is not a requirement that a student be an active member of a faith community. Applicants need only be open to sharing about and listening to a diverse set of perspectives within the Christian tradition.

BENEFITS:
• Develop a deeper understanding of your own vocation in a caring community.
• Create a deeper sense of belonging among your peers.
• Learn new ways to live out your faith on a daily basis within the community.
• Experience a remote mountain retreat center in the middle of winter.
• Receive a small scholarship and a $500.00 stipend to cover expenses.
• All-expenses-paid winter pilgrimage in mid-January.
• 4 upper division Religion credits (can be used toward your major or minor)

NOTE: RLN 100 is a prerequisite for this year-long course. We will gather every other Thursday evening (6pm-8pm), both Fall and Spring semesters. Additionally, the pilgrimage during the end of your winter break in January 2027 is mandatory. Students admitted are expected to have good attendance and participation in the sessions and on the trip in order to earn course credit.

Christensen Scholars program is co-led by Dr. Jeremy Myers (myers@ausburg.edu) from the Christensen Center for Vocation and Rev. John Schwehn (schwehn@augsburg.edu) from Campus Ministry.
