Help Out Unsheltered Relatives at Camp Nenookaasi in East Phillips

Camp Nenookaasi – located at East 24th Street and 13th Avenue South, Minneapolis – is a community based healing camp rooted in native practices & inclusive of all unsheltered relatives.

Some ways to help:
Call your council person and ask the city to provide porta potties and daily trash pick-up.

Volunteer: Join a morning kitchen shift or security shift. If you are new, volunteers will greet you at the door and work with you to train you in. We also need volunteers in the afternoons, to help do whatever is needed on a given day. And, we could even use volunteers today to help organize the kitchen storage area!

Contribute food and supplies: Keeping 150 people fed, protected from the elements, and safe requires constant supply runs. It would be exceptionally helpful to have more people dropping off food and supplies on a regular basis, such as: peanut butter, jelly, bread, sugar, disposable hot cups (no lids needed), disposable plates, bowls, and paper napkins. If you or your faith community or group of friends can commit to a daily delivery of these goods, even better.

Get Fruits and Veg Delivered to Your Home Weekly with Brightside Produce

Brightside Produce, a non-profit started by community youth workers and St. Thomas Biology Professor Adam Kay, strives to eliminate food insecurity in urban areas by bridging communities through people and produce. Brightside provides weekly produce delivery to corner stores in neighborhoods that lack access to large markets as well as providing weekly home deliveries.

When you sign up for weekly local produce deliveries part of the fee will help stock the corner store shelves of our most food-insecure neighborhoods with affordable fresh produce. The simple act of getting a delivery subscription helps community members get reliable access to affordable fresh produce!

Weekly deliveries are available for $16 (small) or $25 (for larger households) and include add-ons like farm fresh eggs and locally roasted coffee. Join a family friendly bike ride exploring the West Bank’s hidden routes and bike paths to the University of Minnesota, Stone Arch Bridge, Nicollet Island, and back to the West Bank. The West Bank Ride begins at the intersection of 6th St S and the bike path on the east side of Riverside Mall (620 16th Av S) at 3 PM on Saturday, October 14. First stop will be the Cedar Cultural Center Plaza (at 3:15 PM) for music by King Baron, a lively quartet playing New Orleans street music. The ride ends at the House of Balls (1504 7th St S) for more music, a party, and the Our Streets Mobile History Museum. The East Phillips Neighborhood Institute (EPNI) formed around the multifaceted vision of an indoor urban farm and housing project to promote the personal, social, environmental, and economic health of our neighborhood.

In May 2023, after a 10-year fight for environmental justice in Minneapolis’ East Phillips neighborhood, the community won the chance to convert a contested industrial warehouse into a cooperatively-owned community hub with an indoor farm and housing, against steep odds.

Come learn what EPNI has been up to for the last six months! There will be a panel of speakers and tables from the health, fundraising, legal, financial, and community outreach committees.

Active Shooter Preparedness Training

Augsburg is offering a series of active shooter preparedness sessions to faculty and staff this fall.

Active shooter incidents are often unpredictable and evolve quickly. And because active shooter situations are often over within 10 to 15 minutes—before law enforcement arrives on the scene—individuals must be prepared to very quickly make a determination about what is occurring and what potential actions to take, usually without official reports or instructions.

These in-person preparedness sessions will review the recommended “Run, Hide, or Fight” protocol and equip you to think in advance about the various response options in different locations on campus.

* Thursday, October 19 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Free Arabic, Russian, or Chinese Language Instruction with CLS Spark

Critical Language Scholarship Spark participants will spend approximately 8 weeks during the summer learning either Arabic, Russian, or Chinese through online classes and activities facilitated by native speakers. Must be a beginning level learner with no classroom experience. This is a virtual initiative for undergraduate students to learn essential languages for America’s engagement with the world.

– 10 hours of intense live group instruction a week
– Cultural activities and individual consultations
– Monthly professional development workshops and inclusive support

Participants of CLS Spark will receive:
– Language instruction and cultural programming
– Textbooks and language learning materials
– Language gains certified using the widely-recognized ACTFL OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) assessment
– Non-competitive eligibility for U.S. government employment for up to three -years after the program completion;
– Academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College; and
– A stipend towards equipment and connectivity costs (for example, a web camera or microphone)

Study Language Abroad for Free with Critical Language Scholarship (CLS)

Spend 8-10 weeks next summer learning one of thirteen languages at an intensive study abroad! The Critical Language Scholarship Program seeks participants from a variety of fields, backgrounds, and career paths essential to America’s engagement with the world. Most programs do not require experience studying the selected language and are designed to promote rapid language gains and intercultural fluency.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is
– A fully-funded 8-10 week language and cultural immersion program
– Students receive academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College
– Part of a US State Department initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages critical to national security and economic prosperity
– There are 13 languages that applicants can select from. Alumni of the program also receive up to three years of non-competitive eligibility (NCE) status when applying for federal government jobs

Competitive applicants will need
– To illustrate a commitment to language learning,
– A strong academic record and potential to succeed in a rigorous academic setting
– Ability to adapt to an intensive program and challenging cultural environment.
– Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

CLS application deadline is November 14th, 2023 at 8 p.m. EST / 5 p.m. PST.

URGO Offering Travel Grants for Student Researchers

URGO has a limited amount if travel funding to award this academic year. URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.
The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year to make travel decisions.

URGO Academic Year Research Funds

URGO has limited funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research. Research must be completed by May 20th. Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals as soon as possible as the funds will be awarded on a rolling basis.

The URGO Advisory Committee will review proposals every other Thursday. Their next meeting is Thursday, October 19th. Proposals need to be submitted by noon on Wednesday the 18th in order to be considered.

In recognition of First-Generation College Celebration Day (Nov. 8), the departments of TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO McNair Scholars, and Multicultural Life will be hosting events that highlight the first-generation college experience during the week of November 6. These events will be geared to students, but all of the Augsburg community is welcome to attend. More information will be provided in the upcoming weeks.

In addition to this programming, we’re asking faculty and staff to complete this brief First-Generation Augsburg Community Survey. The information collected will be used to create ongoing resources and support for first-generation students here at Augsburg. Please provide as much information as you’re comfortable sharing. If so, STEM Peer Mentorship wants you!

STEM Peer Mentorship is a student-led mentoring program that focuses on providing support to First-years and Sophomores as they navigate their academic and professional careers in STEM.

Mentors in STEM Peer Mentorship can play a pivotal role in establishing the success of beginning STEM students. If you’re a rising Junior or Senior in a STEM major, enjoy being a leader and/or have lots of advice & resources to share — this is for you!! (Transfer students are also welcome!)

Having a Mentor in STEM Peer Mentoring can be a major benefit in establishing the success of your STEM career. If you’re a first-year or sophomore in a STEM major interested in having a mentor and want to learn more about internships, scholarships, certain classes, etc… This is for you !

We will go over some of the expectations for mentor and mentee as well. We will also be getting to know each other by doing arts and crafts. There will be FOOD and Beverages.

Join Interfaith at Augsburg for the next Interfaith Forum, a presentation and discussion with Busshō Lahn.

The benefits of meditative practices have been intuited for millennia, but now science has clearly observed the connection between mental wellness and curious self-awareness. The practice of mindfulness is now mainstream, and we’re beginning to ask deeper questions about what it really is, and about what it might be able to show us: What is the relationship between our mental health and our spirituality? What do words like compassion and wisdom mean for me in this age of anxiety? How are qualities like resiliency, courage, clarity, and kindness made available to us? Active Shooter Preparedness Training

Augsburg is offering a series of active shooter preparedness sessions to faculty and staff this fall.

Active shooter incidents are often unpredictable and evolve quickly. And because active shooter situations are often over within 10 to 15 minutes—before law enforcement arrives on the scene—individuals must be prepared to very quickly make a determination about what is occurring and what potential actions to take, usually without official reports or instructions.

These in-person preparedness sessions will review the recommended “Run, Hide, or Fight” protocol and equip you to think in advance about the various response options in different locations on campus.

“Murderball” Film Screening Oct 23: The Athletes and Competition of Wheelchair Rugby

This film presents the stories of athletes competing in Wheelchair Rugby leading up to the 2004 Paralympic Games (with a particular focus on the US and Canadian teams). The film explores personal narratives alongside action-packed competition footage. We’ll follow the film with time to debrief and discuss.

URGO Academic Year Research Funds

URGO has limited funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research. Research must be completed by May 20th. Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals as soon as possible as the funds will be awarded on a rolling basis.

The URGO Advisory Committee will review proposals every other Thursday. Their next meeting is Thursday, October 19th. Proposals need to be submitted by noon on Wednesday the 18th in order to be considered.

URGO Academic Year Research Application 2023-2024

Free Arabic, Russian, or Chinese Language Instruction with CLS Spark

Critical Language Scholarship Spark participants will spend approximately 8 weeks during the summer learning either Arabic, Russian, or Chinese through online classes and activities facilitated by native speakers. Must be a beginning level learner with no classroom experience. This is a virtual initiative for undergraduate students to learn essential languages for America’s engagement with the world.

– 10 hours of intense live group instruction a week
– Cultural activities and individual consultations
– Monthly professional development workshops and inclusive support

Participants of CLS Spark will receive:
– Language instruction and cultural programming
– Textbooks and language learning materials
– Language gains certified using the widely-recognized ACTFL OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) assessment
– Non-competitive eligibility for U.S. government employment for up to three -years after the program completion;
– Academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College; and
– A stipend towards equipment and connectivity costs (for example, a web camera or microphone)

The CLS Spark applications are due November 14th, 2023 at 8 p.m. EST / 5 p.m. PST

Join Us for the Batalden Convocation in Applied Ethics (October 25)

Augsburg students, faculty, and staff are invited to the 2023 Batalden Convocation in Applied Ethics. Join us on October 25, 2023, from 10–11 a.m. in Hoversten Chapel or via Zoom for this free public event on interfaith responses to trauma.

Globally, over 50% of persons experience some sort of trauma during their lifetime. At this year’s Batalden Convocation event, three panelists will share resources from their specific religious traditions (Hinduism, Judaism, and Islam) that respond to trauma and foster resilience. The faculty panelists include Assistant Professor Iva Patel, Assistant Professor Shayna Sheinfeld, and Professor Najeeba Syeed, El-Hibri Endowed Chair.

The Batalden Faculty Scholar Program in Applied Ethics strengthens the infusion of ethics and values into our campus community, so that the skills of ethical reasoning and critical reflection are hallmarks of Augsburg’s students, staff, faculty, and alumni.

Study Language Abroad for Free with Critical Language Scholarship (CLS)

Spend 8-10 weeks next summer learning one of thirteen languages at an intensive study abroad! The Critical Language Scholarship Program seeks participants from a variety of fields, backgrounds, and career paths essential to America’s engagement with the world. Most programs do not require experience studying the selected language and are designed to promote rapid language gains and intercultural fluency.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is
– A fully-funded 8-10 week language and cultural immersion program
– Students receive academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College
– Part of a US State Department initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages critical to national security and economic prosperity
– There are 13 languages that applicants can select from. Alumni of the program also receive up to three years of non-competitive eligibility (NCE) status when applying for federal government jobs

Competitive applicants will need
– To illustrate a commitment to language learning,
– A strong academic record and potential to succeed in a rigorous academic setting
– Ability to adapt to an intensive program and challenging cultural environment.
– Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Join us Thursday, October 12th for the opening reception of Aabijijiwan Ukeyat yanalleh. Aabijijiwan Ukeyat yanalleh is a collaborative exhibition from artists Karen Goulet (Ojibwe) and Monique Verdin (Houma). Karen and Monique are sisters of the same river, connected by the planetary lifeforce known as the Misi-ziibi (Big River, Ojibwe) near the headwaters in the north and remembered as Misha sipokni (Older than Time, Chata) in the coastal territories of the southern Delta, where the bayous of Turtle Island meet the sea.

6-8 pm; All My Relations Arts; Food and drink will be provided.

This event is a unique opportunity for campus leaders, educators, and policymakers in higher education to come together, share innovative ideas, and transform the future of teaching and learning.

The Augsburg community is invited to submit session proposals due 11/13/23.
ACUE invites engaging and thought-provoking proposals, as we aim to create an enriching program that grows the great teaching movement across higher education, campus wide, and in the classroom.

Dr. Sergio Madrid is an Augsburg faculty member in the education department and currently serves as the assistant director of the THRIVE Program. His topic is “I shouldn’t be here, and yet here I am tracking a calling.” In this heartfelt conversation, we will explore the path of discovering and pursuing a calling, inspired by a desire to serve and a belief in the goodness of humanity. We will discuss the ups and downs of this journey with empathy and honesty. Moreover, we will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each step and guide individuals toward resources within the community that can facilitate profound realizations. Co-sponsored by Campus Ministry and the Christensen Center for Vocation.

First-Generation Survey for Augsburg Faculty and Staff

In recognition of First-Generation College Celebration Day (Nov. 8), the departments of TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO McNair Scholars, and Multicultural Life will be hosting events that highlight the first-generation college experience during the week of November 6. These events will be geared to students, but all of the Augsburg community is welcome to attend. More information will be provided in the upcoming weeks.

In addition to this programming, we’re asking faculty and staff to complete this brief First-Generation Augsburg Community Survey. The information collected will be used to create ongoing resources and support for first-generation students here at Augsburg. Please provide as much information as you’re comfortable sharing. NOTE: This is the same survey we released last year, so if you already submitted a response, no need to do so again!

URGO Academic Year Research Funds

URGO has limited funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research. Research must be completed by May 20th. Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals as soon as possible as the funds will be awarded on a rolling basis.

The URGO Advisory Committee will review proposals every other Thursday. Their next meeting is Thursday, October 19th. Proposals need to be submitted by noon on Wednesday the 18th in order to be considered.

URGO Academic Year Research Application 2023-2024

Free Arabic, Russian, or Chinese Language Instruction with CLS Spark

Critical Language Scholarship Spark participants will spend approximately 8 weeks during the summer learning either Arabic, Russian, or Chinese through online classes and activities facilitated by native speakers. Must be a beginning level learner with no classroom experience. This is a virtual initiative for undergraduate students to learn essential languages for America’s engagement with the world.

– 10 hours of intense live group instruction a week
– Cultural activities and individual consultations
– Monthly professional development workshops and inclusive support

Participants of CLS Spark will receive:
– Language instruction and cultural programming
– Textbooks and language learning materials
– Language gains certified using the widely-recognized ACTFL OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) assessment
– Non-competitive eligibility for U.S. government employment for up to three -years after the program completion;
– Academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College; and
– A stipend towards equipment and connectivity costs (for example, a web camera or microphone)

The CLS Spark applications are due November 14th, 2023 at 8 p.m. EST / 5 p.m. PST

URGO Offering Travel Grants for Student Researchers

URGO has a limited amount if travel funding to award this academic year. URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.
The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year to make travel decisions.

Study Language Abroad for Free with Critical Language Scholarship (CLS)

Spend 8-10 weeks next summer learning one of thirteen languages at an intensive study abroad! The Critical Language Scholarship Program seeks participants from a variety of fields, backgrounds, and career paths essential to America’s engagement with the world. Most programs do not require experience studying the selected language and are designed to promote rapid language gains and intercultural fluency.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is
– A fully-funded 8-10 week language and cultural immersion program
– Students receive academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College
– Part of a US State Department initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages critical to national security and economic prosperity
– There are 14 languages that applicants can select from. Alumni of the program also receive up to three years of non-competitive eligibility (NCE) status when applying for federal government jobs

Competitive applicants will need
– To illustrate a commitment to language learning,
– A strong academic record and potential to succeed in a rigorous academic setting
– Ability to adapt to an intensive program and challenging cultural environment.
– Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

CLS application deadline is November 14th, 2023 at 8 p.m. EST / 5 p.m. PST.

Join Interfaith at Augsburg for the next Interfaith Forum, a presentation and discussion with Busshō Lahn.

The benefits of meditative practices have been intuited for millennia, but now science has clearly observed the connection between mental wellness and curious self-awareness. The practice of mindfulness is now mainstream, and we’re beginning to ask deeper questions about what it really is, and about what it might be able to show us: What is the relationship between our mental health and our spirituality? What do words like compassion and wisdom mean for me in this age of anxiety? How are qualities like resiliency, courage, clarity, and kindness made available to us? Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy and International Affairs

The purpose of the Junior Summer Institute (JSI) Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field. Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of seven participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, Harvard, University of Washington, or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2024 and August 2025. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

Reaffirmation of Accreditation Moodle Site

The HLC Reaffirmation of Accreditation Steering Committee recently launched an Accreditation Moodle site. Here you will find information about the upcoming HLC Site visit and accreditation portfolio, a timeline of activities and events, and a form to contact members of the Steering Committee. The site also contains a link to a submission portal whereby individuals can upload evidence to support the writing of the accreditation portfolio. Members of the Steering Committee are reaching out to departments, programs, and offices as needed to solicit evidence.

Augsburg will be hosting an in-person event focused on applying to paid research opportunities in STEM that is open to students, staff, and faculty from Augsburg and the broader community.

Dixie Shafer of URGO and Lara Crombie of the TRIO McNair Scholars program will lead the workshop for students, staff, and faculty on identifying and applying for summer research opportunities such as National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs).

The workshop will be followed by a panel for students featuring student and alumni research experiences and a panel for faculty and staff on supporting equitable access and participation in research programs.

All attendees are invited to stay for a community dinner following the workshop and panels.
