Action: Stop HERC – Let Minneapolis Breathe – Tuesday, August 15, 1 p.m.

submitted by gilmerje@augsburg.edu

The campaign to shut down HERC is now entering a more public and critical phase. We invite you to join next Tuesday August 15 at 1:00pm at the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners meeting in downtown Minneapolis.

Please RSVP so we can send updates about the event, county meeting rules, and our demands: https://actionnetwork.org/events/rally-to-shut-down-herc-trash-burner/

This is an important action– the most important for people to join so far in this campaign. A wide range of people will speak directly to the commissioners, including: doctors, union leaders, scientists, teachers, waste workers and experts, and impacted community members. We need to back them. If we create enough pressure now, we can compel the county commissioners to set in motion HERC’s closure. County staff are already preparing a closure plan because of our work this last legislative session. Now we need these elected commissioners to ensure there’s a date attached to that plan.

Read more here: https://sahanjournal.com/climate-environment/herc-closing-plan-hennepin-county-bonding-bill/

Please bring your people!

Location: Government Center A2400, Board of Commissioners chamber, 300 South Sixth Street Minneapolis, MN 55487. To get to Room A2400, go up the escalator, then go through security for elevator A (not C) to the 24th floor.

Transportation: light rail (Blue & Green lines to Government Plaza); street parking; or *let us know if you need a ride on RSVP form*

Arrival Time: Aim to arrive at least 15 minutes before 1pm to make time for getting through the body scanner.

In solidarity,
Minnesota Environmental Justice Table & HERC Zero Burn Coalition

¡Ándale! Improve Your Spanish Skills This Fall

submitted by reinhard@augsburg.edu

Is it time to move your beginning Spanish-speaking skills to a higher level? Are you looking for another course to add into your schedule? The Languages and Cross-Cultural Studies department invites you to consider taking Spa 211 for the Fall semester. Continuing your Spanish study is a powerful way to enhance your resume and make you a more viable job candidate in a market that is looking for global competence and multilingual skills. Spa 211 is the last prerequisite course for a Spanish minor, but even if you’re not able to pursue a minor, adding another Spanish course or 2 to your transcript and resume will give you an advantage in a competitive hiring market.

SPA 211 is Intermediate Spanish, a 2nd yr. language course designed for continuing skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and exploring cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, and is intended for students who’ve completed Spanish 112 or the equivalent.

This fall Spa 211 meets MWF 12:30-1:40, on campus. Students, faculty and staff are invited to register. Please spread the word to your Augsburg friends! And if you have any questions, you’re welcome to contact me or Professor Michael Kidd.

Augsburg Policies Regarding Cannabis Use

submitted by farrisr@augsburg.edu

Starting on August 1, Minnesota became the nation’s 23rd state to legalize recreational cannabis use for adults 21 years of age and older. This notice outlines Augsburg University policies regarding marijuana in light of the new state law.

Although cannabis will be legal under Minnesota state law, it is still illegal under federal law in almost all forms. In accordance with the federal Drug Free Schools and Communities Act, Augsburg will continue to:

***Prohibit the use, possession, and distribution of cannabis (medical and recreational) on campus or at any off-campus activity sponsored by or affiliated with the university (e.g., athletic events, conferences, retreats, class trips, internships, remote work, etc.).

***Prohibit all students from being under the influence of cannabis while on campus or while participating in off-campus activities sponsored by or affiliated with the university.

***Prohibit any student under the age of 21 from using, possessing, or distributing cannabis, both on and off campus.

Any individual alleged to have violated these policies will be subject to the university’s Conduct Adjudication Process (for students) or procedures outlined in the Employee Handbook (for employees).

The Center for Wellness and Counseling and the StepUP® program are available as free and confidential resources for students with additional questions or concerns related to substance use. Employees are encouraged to refer to the Employee Assistance Program for support with substance abuse concerns.
