A recent report reveals that, predictably, white men feel the highest sense of belonging in corporate America.

Conducted by the Center for Talent Innovation (CTI), The Power of Belonging: What It Is and Why It Matters in Today’s Workplace is the first of its kind to define, measure, and quantify what it means to belong at work—with insights into race, gender, ethnicity, generation, and other demographic identities.

Together, we will explore CTI’s findings and how to create work cultures where everyone belongs.

Learning Outcomes
Learn about how different identities feel they belong
Identify new options for creating cultures of belonging
Become more conscious of how your own behaviors unintentionally reinforce unproductive dynamics

This event is part of The Forum’s new Professional Development Labs learning series. More information below.

Americans encounter more religious diversity at work than in any other sphere of life, yet religion is too often left out of the diversity conversation. Join Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC) for a Professional Development Lab that will give you the chance to explore issues of religious identity and diversity at work, develop your interfaith skillset, and create an action plan for how you will engage religious and secular identity in your workplace.

Learning Outcomes
Learn why engaging religious diversity matters in the workplace
Identify concrete skills to engage religious diversity and enhance workplace culture
Create a customized action plan for how to engage religious diversity productively in your workplace

About The Forum’s Professional Development Labs
Professional Development Labs (PDLs) are half-day interactive learning experiences intended to develop professional competencies that support leaders in reaching the next level in their DEI leadership. Unlike traditional workshop sessions, PDLs will be goal oriented and include personal and professional action and accountability planning for next level leadership. PDLs will be offered synchronously in varying formats (in-person, hybrid or virtual) based on CDC convening recommendations.

Sad News About a Colleague

submitted by kaivola@augsburg.edu

Dear faculty and staff,

I write to share the sad news that Patricia (“Pat”) Parker, former associate academic dean and instructor in library science, passed away on October 20. Pat joined Augsburg in 1960, was appointed associate academic dean in 1978, and retired in 1991.

Pat received the bachelor of arts degree from Eastern Michigan University and the master of arts and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. She was a strong advocate for equity and women’s rights. As associate academic dean, she helped develop Augsburg’s Weekend College. She is survived by two daughters, Sarah Lee ’80, ’91, and Jackie Cherryhomes ’76. Her daughter Jackie is Regent Emerita of the Augsburg Board of Regents, served as President of the Minneapolis City Council, and ran for mayor of Minneapolis in 2013.

Boyd Koehler, emeritus professor and librarian, offers these words about his mentor of many years: “Pat Parker was an early, profound, and articulate advocate of diversity. She championed authors of color through her teaching of children’s literature, thereby enlightening so many future teachers in her very popular classes. She also made a point of helping so many students of color–and countless others–achieve a high comfort level in her classes, and she demonstrated a genuine concern for their academic and social success.”

More information is available in the published obituary (see below).

Please join me in holding Pat’s family, friends, and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers.

New MacOS Monterey is Out, Not Ready for Campus Computers

submitted by krajewsk@augsburg.edu

Apple has released a new operating system, Monterey. Augsburg-owned Macintoshes should be prevented from doing the upgrade through our management software. This is to prevent things breaking with an upgrade like campus printing. We’ll be testing Monterey and will make it available to Augsburg-owned Macs when we know it won’t break important services like printing.

If you are using a personal Mac and are currently printing to campus printers we recommend not upgrading to Monterey until we’ve tested it out. Campus printing will likely not work after the upgrade based on past experiences.

Students: Check Your Email for Federal Grant Funding Information

submitted by burgessa@augsburg.edu

As a result of funding provided by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, funds are being disbursed to all students enrolled this fall semester. Emails were sent on Friday with information about how to access this funding.

Following guidance by the Department of Education, grant amounts were primarily determined by a student’s program type and their Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from the FAFSA. We understand that students have experienced a multitude of disruptions in the midst of this pandemic, including financial distress. We hope this funding can provide some small relief during this challenging time.

In addition to this federal grant, we also want to remind students whose financial circumstances have changed that a special circumstance application for financial aid is available on the Student Financial Services website. Changed circumstances may include, but are not limited to, job loss, reduction of income, change to household size, one-time sources of income, etc.

Information about the special circumstance application

Forum PDL, Engaging Religious Diversity in the Workplace

submitted by gocmen@augsburg.edu

When: November 8, 2021 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm CST
Where: Online/Virtual Conference
Cost: $95
Presenters: Eboo Patel, Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC)  |  Farah Siddiqui, Salesforce  |  Megan Hughes Johnson, Interfaith Youth Core

This event is part of The Forum’s new Professional Development Labs learning series. More information below.

Americans encounter more religious diversity at work than in any other sphere of life, yet religion is too often left out of the diversity conversation. Many of us are uncomfortable talking about religion at work because we are afraid of offending our colleagues or wading into uncertain legal territory, but engaging religious diversity can lead to stronger team culture and better relationships with clients and consumers.

All Saints Commemoration

submitted by dames@augsburg.edu

We will hold an All Saints service in chapel November 5 at 10:40 am. The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. At this service we praise God for the saints who’ve gone before us, especially honoring ones who have been personally significant in our faith. We’ll also remember those who have died, especially in this past year. We celebrate and remember through song and prayer. Please submit names you would like included in the service to the campus ministry office by emailing Janice Dames at dames@augsburg.edu.
