Greetings! It is that time of year again!
We are currently accepting applications for the Minnesota Technology Foundation Scholarship. The scholarships are for Minnesota undergraduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. These awards range from $2,500 to $5,000 awards and can include internship opportunities at MN Tech member companies. The Minnesota Technology Foundation supports diversity in this application and award process.
We also have Named Scholarships in specific areas supported by our generous sponsors. In the past, we have provided scholarships in Computer Science, STEM Education, Data Science, Women in STEM, Underrepresented Populations in STEM and Women in Computer Science. We encourage you to let students know of this additional and exceptional opportunity.
Eligibility requirements:
Must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in a STEM field or in STEM teaching
Only students with sophomore through senior academic status in the current school year may apply. Sophomore status may include students who have achieved this status through advanced placement (AP) credit or post-secondary options (PSEO)s
Applicants must be enrolled at an accredited, Minnesota-based higher education institution.
Scholarships will be awarded in the fall term of 2022 and presented to recipients at Minnesota Technology Association Tekne Awards in November. Students must be enrolled at time of award.
Special Circumstances
In addition to traditional STEM fields, health science majors whose studies will NOT lead to participation in direct patient care are welcome to apply.
The scholarship is open to international students, but preference is given to students who intend to work in Minnesota after graduation.
Past scholarship winners are eligible to re-apply as long as they meet the rest of the requirements listed here.

Alyssa Parkhurst, a junior at Augsburg double majoring in Environmental Studies and American Indian Studies, has just been named a Udall Scholar. Only 55 students across the country are selected. Alyssa’s scholarship is in the category of Tribal Policy. She receives $7,000 and will spend five days in Tucson, Arizona, at Scholar Orientation at the Udall Ranch. extending her professional network, meeting other scholars and alumni, and learning new skills.
The Udall Foundation awards scholarships to college sophomores and juniors for leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to Native American nations or to the environment.
Alyssa is an Act Six Scholar, Summer intern at Dream of Wild Health, Environmental Stewardship Coordinator at Augsburg, Storyteller for Minneapolis Institute of Art, and Jingle dress dancer and educator.

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.
Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2022 (graduating by December ‘24)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)
Application deadline: Wednesday, May 18 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Friday, May 27 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)
Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

We welcomed them when they arrived, let’s support students as they move out, easing their transition from finals to summer break! MoveOut Day is TODAY, Friday 4/29, so staff and faculty volunteers are needed to help students move out of their residence halls and sort donations going to the ShareShop and Sisterhood Boutique.
Residence Life and the ShareShop team are partnering to lead MoveOut with goals of easing students’ stress of moving, collecting donations so future students can make use of them, and diverting “waste” away from the Minneapolis incinerator. It’s a win-win-win! We just need your help!

The Off-Campus Study Office and URGO are pleased to announce that Justin Holewa, a ’23 biology major, received a Boren Scholarship for $25,000. Justin will be studying Korean in South Korea for a full year. Only 25% of applicants receive this nationally competitive award. Justin can imagine himself working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture on a range of topics, including a plant disease called citrus greening. Justin completed a summer of URGO research funded by donors Dean and Amy Sundquist under the mentorship Dr. Leon van Eck.
Boren Scholars study a wide range of critical languages, come from diverse fields of study and immerse themselves in the language and cultures in world regions underrepresented in study abroad. Boren Scholars are committed to public service, working in positions critical to U.S. national security throughout the federal government.
STEM students can participate in intensive language and cultural study for a summer, or like other applicants, study for six to twelve months in world regions underrepresented in study abroad. Congratulations to our Auggie Pride Award winner for the month of April, Erin Moore, Unit Leader in the Education Department. In the last few months, Erin has coordinated and led the significant work needed to prepare the department Self-Study to be submitted to PELSB. Erin worked diligently with faculty and staff to prepare this important document. Although it was a team effort, Erin was instrumental in ensuring that all aspects of the self study were completed and this work will now lead into the site visit from PELSB in the upcoming academic year.!”The Augsburg staff senate is happy to recognize her amazing work. As we near the end of another year please don’t forget to take care of your campus mailbox. This includes checking it for any mail, returning your lock and filing out the survey for what you would like us to do with your mail after this semester.
Two weeks after the spring semester ends (May 16, 2022) we will be closing all student campus boxes. Then before the fall semester starts we will reassign them (possible new numbers) to all students living on campus. Commuter students can then request to have a campus box if they would like one.
If you would like your mail forwarded or would like to keep your mailbox open for the summer, please either fill out this survey (https://forms.gle/872EQGhwK1tCWiPB6) or send us an email (mailship@augsburg.edu) with any relevant information. There is also an option to be reassigned your current campus box number for the next semester if you will be returning in the fall.
We are only able to forward 1st Class USPS mail and packages. Other packages (UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.), magazines, non-profit mail and standard mail will not be forwarded. We can also only forward to USA addresses. The forwarding period for the Augsburg Mailroom is two months from when the request is submitted. Afterward any additional mail we receive will be returned to sender.
We request that you contact the people/business sending you mail and update your address with them. Enrolling in online/electronic bills or statements can also be a smart option. It is environmentally friendly, secure and will often save you time (and sometimes money). Asking us to forward your mail does not change your mailing address with the post office or the University, just the Mailroom.

The Commission of Accreditation voted to grant the PsyD program ” accredited (on contingency)” status effective December 8, 2021. Doctoral programs “accredited, on
contingency” must provide outcome data for students in the program and program graduates within 3 years of receiving that status. These data must be provided in an updated self-study due by September 1, 2024. Upon review of the updated self-study, a site visit may be approved and the program will be reviewed for full accreditation status.

As Earth Month is coming to an end, we gather around a bonfire to find unity in community. We bring our bodies, minds, and spirits together in poetry to listen to Mother Earth and to honor our home. Our hearts are on fire for justice that is rooted in healing our planet. The collective struggle for liberation depends on how we treat one another and our environment. Join us in celebrating the close of Earth Month with a bonfire to honor our commitment to ecological stewardship.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is seeking debate judges for our Spanish Debate League and East African Debate programs. No debate experience is needed – we will train you.
Judges for our Spanish Debate League must be fluent in Spanish. East African Debate League tournaments are held in English. Both types of judges must pass a background check and have a supportive, educational mindset.
Judges will earn $55 per tournament. Tournaments on these dates will be virtual!

Interested in Native American, First Nations, and Indigenous culture and history? If yes, this new course on expressing identity through art, music, and dance is for you! It is in registration as “Indigenous Forms of Cultural Expression”.
This course honors Indigenous contemporary cultural forms of expression including theater, film, new media, storytelling, literature, dance, and music both in our region and across Turtle Island. Throughout this course students will engage with the meaning of aesthetics in Indigenous culture, interact with guest artists and speakers, and explore how Indigenous culture shapes and is shaped by contemporary cultural contexts.
It fulfills an AIS requirement, a Humanities LAF and is 4 credits. No prerequisites

Learn how to edit with Adobe Premiere Pro! This is a 2 credit course open to anyone!
FLM 495: Topics: Directing for Cinematic Storytelling
Taught by Raven Johnson, a filmmaker-in-residence, you will learn how to direct films! From shots to scenes to everything in between! If you have at all thought about making a movie, this class is for you. It’s helpful to have taken Film 180 or another film class, but it isn’t required. From camera-placement and movement to shaping an actor’s performance and communicating cinematic mood and tone, you will work to develop your own directing skills as you learn the elements, techniques, and methods for working with actors and film crews.
FLM 495: Topics: Movies That Matter
Uncle Ben told Spiderman that “with great power comes great responsibility”. Moving pictures have the power to influence politics, change industry, impact culture, spur social movements, change laws, and write history. In this course, you will watch films, assess their meaning and impact, and engage in topical discussions around cinematic techniques, cultural values, and film theories. Note: The focus of each Movies That Matters course will be centered on the interests and expertise of the professor. Examples include: women directors, BIPOC film, animation, sci-fi, and yes, super-heroes. This particular course will focus on women directors.

The Off-Campus Study Office and URGO are pleased to announce that Justin Howela, a ’23 biology major, received a Boren Scholarship for $25,000. Justin will be studying Korean in South Korea for a full year. Only 25% of applicants receive this nationally competitive award. Justin can imagine himself working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture on a range of topics, including a plant disease called citrus greening. Justin completed a summer of URGO research funded by donors Dean and Amy Sundquist under the mentorship Dr. Leon van Eck.
Boren Scholars study a wide range of critical languages, come from diverse fields of study and immerse themselves in the language and cultures in world regions underrepresented in study abroad. Boren Scholars are committed to public service, working in positions critical to U.S. national security throughout the federal government.
STEM students can participate in intensive language and cultural study for a summer, or like other applicants, study for six to twelve months in world regions underrepresented in study abroad. Earn $55 and Help Students Build Skills: Judge the Spanish Debate League
The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is searching for some last-minute Spanish-speaking judges for our Spanish Debate League.
In the Spanish Debate League, Twin Cities middle and high school students debate a community-chosen topic entirely in Spanish. This year’s topic involves the ethics of consuming animal products.
We need judges to make it happen. No debate experience is required. We are seeking folks who are fluent in Spanish and willing to be educators, who will listen to students speak, give constructive feedback, and choose a winner of our debates. You’ll help students build their academic skills and Spanish fluency.
You’ll earn $55 for 2 rounds held virtually on weeknights.

You’re Invited! Judge Debates & Network with Students on May 21st!
The MN Urban Debate League is looking for financial professionals that identify as female or gender non-conforming to judge at our annual Financial Literacy Debate tournament this year!
You do not need debate experience to be a judge. We will provide training and opportunities to ask questions prior to the tournament, and will also be available to support you during the tournament.
Financial Literacy Debate is an innovative program that supports students’ public speaking, critical thinking, and financial literacy skills and knowledge. Our program works to close the gender gap in the financial sector by building the leadership and financial knowledge of high school participants that identify as female or gender non-conforming, through debate. Over the course of the initiative, students meet with their coach after school, learn about the topic area and fundamental economic concepts through an engaging curriculum, hold practice debates, and participate in a competition with other schools.
Our tournament this year is tentatively scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 21 from 9:30 am – 2:30 pm at Augsburg University. The tournament schedule will be as follows:
· 9:30 am: Judge training
· 10:00 am: Judge three debate rounds about the benefits/harms of cryptocurrency
· 1:00: Lunch and networking between students and financial professionals
· 2:00: Awards Ceremony
· 2:30: End

Many human resources professionals are stepping into the diversity manager role for their organization. This can be a daunting proposition. This session will explore elements of a successful diversity program and the first steps to get started. We will look at ways to stretch budgets by creating building blocks that can expand as resources allow.
Topics will include forming a DEI council, finding diversity champions, forming ERGs, diversity communication tips, engaging senior leaders, and how DEI education can be more than classroom-based learning. We’ll also cover techniques and tools for working in the virtual and hybrid environments.

Interested in Native American, First Nations, and Indigenous culture and history? If yes, this new course on expressing identity through art, music, and dance is for you! It is in registration as “Indigenous Forms of Cultural Expression”.
This course honors Indigenous contemporary cultural forms of expression including theater, film, new media, storytelling, literature, dance, and music both in our region and across Turtle Island. Throughout this course students will engage with the meaning of aesthetics in Indigenous culture, interact with guest artists and speakers, and explore how Indigenous culture shapes and is shaped by contemporary cultural contexts.
It fulfills an AIS requirement, a Humanities LAF and is 4 credits. No prerequisites

The Off-Campus Study Office and URGO are pleased to announce that Justin Howela, a ’23 biology major, received a Boren Scholarship for $25,000. Justin will be studying Korean in South Korea for a full year. Only 25% of applicants receive this nationally competitive award. Justin can imagine himself working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture on a range of topics, including a plant disease called citrus greening. Justin completed a summer of URGO research funded by donors Dean and Amy Sundquist under the mentorship Dr. Leon van Eck.
Boren Scholars study a wide range of critical languages, come from diverse fields of study and immerse themselves in the language and cultures in world regions underrepresented in study abroad. Boren Scholars are committed to public service, working in positions critical to U.S. national security throughout the federal government.
STEM students can participate in intensive language and cultural study for a summer, or like other applicants, study for six to twelve months in world regions underrepresented in study abroad. Join us for a Focused Conversation on Augsburg’s proposed budget for the next fiscal year. John Coskran, associate vice president and CFO, will present a review of Augsburg’s operating model and expense structure and an overview of the proposed fiscal 2023 operating budget, which will be presented to the board of regents at its May meeting. John will also present some details of Augsburg’s operating model to provide context and background for the university’s operating budget.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to Twin Cities high school and middle school students. For nearly two decades, we’ve provided debate camps through our Minnesota Debate & Advocacy Workshop (MDAW).

Summer Academic Enrichment Programs
The Summer Academic Enrichment Program will provide stipends to students on a first-come, first-served basis, to cover all or a portion of the direct cost to the student for attending one of our camps up to $1,000. Students must meet income qualifications and have earned a minimum C average in the camp’s subject area. The student application will go live on the State of Minnesota Office of Higher Education website on April 1st, 2022. Earn $55 and Help Students Build Skills: Judge the Spanish Debate League
The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is searching for some last-minute Spanish-speaking judges for our Spanish Debate League.
In the Spanish Debate League, Twin Cities middle and high school students debate a community-chosen topic entirely in Spanish. This year’s topic involves the ethics of consuming animal products.
We need judges to make it happen. No debate experience is required. We are seeking folks who are fluent in Spanish and willing to be educators, who will listen to students speak, give constructive feedback, and choose a winner of our debates. You’ll help students build their academic skills and Spanish fluency.
You’ll earn $55 for 2 rounds held virtually on weeknights.

Students are able to use 3 hours a week; 3 one hour sessions or 6 thirty-minute sessions. You can access TutorMe through any of your Moodle classes.
