The Critical Race & Ethnic Studies Scholarship will be awarded to a student who demonstrates financial need with preference given to students engaged in coursework or majoring in Critical Race and Ethnicity Studies as the vision for this new department is realized.

Critical Race & Ethnic Studies
The department has been in construction since 1968 and was supported by President Pribbenow on June 2020, in the wake of George Floyd’s murder by the Minneapolis police department.

The desire in the creation of the CRES Department will Include

1) a major and minor in CRES with concentrations in Africana Studies; Latine/x Studies; and Asian-American Studies
2) 5 tenure faculty total, with 3 immediate tenure-track faculty in the Fall 2021 and two more in the following years; and
3) actively center the interdisciplinary scholarship rooted in the practices, philosophies, and methods of ethnic studies.

This scholarship was created by a generous donor and in collaboration with a group of students and PASU (Pan-Afrikan Student Union) raising money to create more accessible scholarships.

**This application must be submitted by 5:00 pm Monday, February 22, 2021**

WHO CAN APPLY:
-Must have completed at least one full semester at Augsburg
-Be enrolled as a full-time student in the Augsburg Day program for the academic year 2021-2022

The Batalden Scholar in Applied Ethics program is pleased to announce that there is funding available to Augsburg faculty who wish to mentor undergraduate research assistants to support student or faculty research in applied ethics. Funding for this RA program is generously supported by Paul ’63 and LaVonne (Olson) Batalden ’63, and Stephen ’67 and Sandra Batalden.

Eligibility: Currently enrolled undergraduate Augsburg student with a strong interest in applied ethics research.

Stipend: Mirroring URGO, the selected undergraduate research assistants will receive a $500 stipend at the end of the Spring 2021 semester.

Award reporting: All students who are awarded a Batalden RA position will be required to attend a May 2021 virtual event to briefly report on the impact of their research assistantship. Faculty working with their RA are strongly encouraged to attend as well.

Special Enrollment Period Starts Feb. 16

Beginning Tuesday, February 16, MNsure is opening a three-month special enrollment period to help any Minnesotan not currently enrolled through MNsure to secure health insurance coverage. It will run through May 17. Check out the link below for more info.

This announcement follows the nationwide special enrollment period established by President Biden for those states who use healthcare.gov, the federally run health insurance marketplace.

Note: If you experience a qualifying life event, qualify for Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare, or are a member of a federally recognized American Indian tribe, you can enroll through MNsure at any time of the year.

Share your suggestions for the next Batalden Convocation speaker for Spring 2022.

Each year (with the exception of last March 2020 due to the pandemic), the Batalden Program in Applied Ethics hosts a “Batalden convocation.” Historically, this has been a one-hour talk held in the chapel. Since the academic year 2018-2019, a “Batalden Visiting Scholar” approach has been taken; this allows the “Batalden Visiting Scholar” to both visit classes and with students on the same day as the convocation and, in some cases, the following day. Previous Batalden Visiting Scholars have included Professor Jin Park (Buddhist scholar), Professor Frederic Reamer (ethicist), and Professor Kwame Anthony Appiah (ethicist).

For the current Batalden Scholar in Applied Ethics (Bibiana Koh) the overarching objective of the program is to promote broad conversations in interfaith, intersectional, or interdisciplinary applied ethics that promote social justice and social change across the Augsburg University campus and the community at large. The program defines applied ethics as work that focuses on, considers, and/or addresses public and/or private moral issues. The Batalden Ethics program is generously supported by Paul ’63 and LaVonne (Olson) Batalden ’63, and Stephen ’67 and Sandra Batalden.

In hope and anticipation of a pandemic-free year, planning for the Spring 2022 convocation begins now. Ready to change the world? Apply for the Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship, a full scholarship to study in Ireland in late summer 2021 with a cohort of student leaders from around the country!

The Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship was founded to empower students of color with a transformative experience abroad, much like Frederick Douglass was inspired by his travels. This year’s cohort is co-sponsored by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs to commemorate the 175th anniversary of Douglass’s four-month journey around Ireland.

You’ll be based in Dublin and visit other cities where Douglass campaigned, while meeting with government leaders and social justice activists. Special emphasis on leadership, social justice, agitation for positive change and cross-cultural understanding – so critical in 2020 of all years!

This opportunity is offered by CIEE, a study abroad organization that Augsburg partners with. All program fees are covered and airfare is COVERED – you only pay for your passport (if you need one) and a few meals.

All eligible students who submit an application also qualify for a $1,500 scholarship towards any CIEE summer program! You don’t have to win the fellowship to qualify for this funding!!

Features is also often a home for art pieces and poems. A bullet-point list of this position’s responsibilities are below:
