Chapel: 5th House Ensemble Deep Listening

Please join us in Hoversten Chapel or by Zoom for chapel today at 11:30 am for the first of a five part series with the Fifth House Ensemble in which they will introduce Deep Listening – a mindfulness practice motivated by the idea that communal music-making is everyone’s birthright. Fifth House Ensemble will partner with Augsburg University to work with students from the school of music, the McPhail Music Center, and the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship for a semester-long residency focused on community and co-creation. Reminder: COVID Relief Funding Application Deadline is January 31

As a result of new federal COVID relief funding, we are able to review applications for students who are in need of financial assistance with spring semester tuition payments as a result of the current pandemic. Please review the following information prior to submitting an application:
*Applications will be accepted through January 31st, 2021.
*Students must be enrolled in the current spring semester to apply.
*Appeals will be reviewed based on financial need and current financial aid information for each student.
*Funding is not guaranteed and is non-renewable.
*Students whose total gift aid meets or exceeds standard tuition and fees will not qualify for additional funding.
*Any funding awarded to a student will be added to their financial aid package and applied to their Augsburg student account.

Applications will be reviewed during the first two weeks of February and students will be notified of the result through their Augsburg email.

The editor of our “Opinions” section is responsible for curating, editing and writing articles centered on Augsburg student and community opinions and stories. Some examples of Opinions content topics include political comics, critiques of Augsburg administration and leadership, experiences of marginalized identities, political views and more. A bullet-point list of this position’s duties are below.

Curate, edit and write articles centered on Augsburg student and community opinions.
When editing, maintain writer’s intended meaning. Strive to collaborate with writers when possible.
Commit to being open, fair and reasonable about Opinions submitted.
Allow appropriate civic discourse within the Opinions section.
Plan photos for section in coordination with Photo Editor.

This position is paid $50 per newspaper issue and works 4-5 hours a week.

Faculty Apply to be a FYE Teaching Fellow

The First Year Experience/AugSem program is seeking faculty to be a part of a pilot program for instructors teaching an AugSem during the fall 2021.

Goal: Create a cohort of instructors who will meet to discuss anti-racist pedagogy and student learning in relation to working with first year students.

Fellows will need to commit to attending all 1-hour FYE Teaching Fellows meetings in spring 2021 and fall 2021 semesters. Meetings will take place in: March, April, May, September, October and November.

FYE Teaching Fellow positions are open only to those planning to teach an AugSem course in the fall of 2021.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2021 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
1. Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

Alternative Spring Break Experience 2021

Campus Ministry invites students to participate in an Alternative Spring Break experience March 15-19, 2021, offering the students an opportunity to look deeper at justice issues in the Twin Cities and surrounding area and engage in meaningful, relationship-centered volunteer work.
The justice issues will be examined through several experiences in the Twin Cities and reflection and sharing in order for participants to process their experience communally and individually. These experiences include:
MN Council of Churches Sacred Sites Tour, exploring MN history through a Native lens by visiting sacred sites and through storytelling.
A presentation and activities by the University of MN Mapping Prejudice project, exploring housing inequity due to racial disparities.
A presentation and activities by the Lutheran Social Service of MN (LSS-MN) Advocacy team, providing practical and current information on ways to be advocates.
Activities are subject to change due to COVID-19 protocols.
For volunteer opportunities, students will partner with LSS-MN at Supported Living Homes (SLH), known as ‘group homes.’ SLH provides a family home setting to no more than 4 community members living with differing abilities.
Students will serve in small groups at several homes. Activities may include yard work, building maintenance, meal prep, and social activities alongside those who live in the home. Volunteer work will focus on the relational aspect of volunteering, rather than the actual jobs accomplished. Volunteer activities are designed to help volunteers and residents see one another as individuals rather than ‘other.’
This ASB has been approved to count as an Augsburg Experience. Please indicate on the registration form if you would like that option.
Cost: $25, including the required book & lunch each of the 5 days. Please fill out the registration form & turn in your fee to Janice Dames in the Campus Ministry office.

The film uplifts the voices of Minnesotan artists, scholars, and community members who have been historically and negatively impacted by these injustices, through a collection of interviews, music, and poetry.

Gov. Tim Walz announced yesterday that Minnesotans 65 and older will have a full day, today, Tuesday, January 26, to preregister for vaccinations as part of the state’s vaccine pilot program. Individuals will be randomly selected from among those who preregister and notified on Wednesday of appointments later this week.

In order to be considered for an appointment, Minnesotans aged 65 and older must complete the pre-registration using the online portal or by calling. The portal will be available for pre-registration for 24 hours, starting at 5 a.m. today. The call center will be open today from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. for pre-registration. Due to high demand, the state encourages people to use the online portal.

The vaccine is available by appointment only. Walk-ins will not be accepted.

Separately, Minnesota K-12 teachers, who are also eligible for the vaccine pilot program, will continue to sign up for vaccinations that are allotted to individual school districts. The Minnesota Department of Health has noted that the timeline for vaccinations for the general public, which may include many of the Augsburg campus community, may be late spring or summer.

Apply for a Boren Scholarship to Cover Language Learning Abroad

The Boren Scholarship is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages by individuals committed to public service careers. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences where language learning is the focus. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and can assist any applicants in selecting a program, developing budgets and writing/editing application essays.

Scholarship amounts:

Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)

Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks

Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

Imam Makram El-Amin has worked for more than two decades as a religious and community leader, firmly rooted in the principle of our inherent human dignity. Imam El-Amin leads Al Maa’uun (Neighborly Needs) Community Outreach Services that addresses food insecurity, affordable housing, career services, and mentoring.
Lori Brandt Hale is Professor and Chair of Religion and Philosophy at Augsburg University, where she has taught since 1998. Brandt Hale has devoted her academic career both to teaching and to studying the life and legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
Rabbi Arielle LeKach-Rosenberg serves as Assistant Rabbi at Shir Tikvah with a focus on music, prayer and activism. She was ordained by the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College in June 2017. She spent her final two years of rabbinical school working as a full-time rabbinic fellow at B’nai Jeshurun in New York City.

The First Year Experience/AugSem program is seeking faculty to be a part of a pilot program for instructors teaching an AugSem during the fall 2021.

Goal: Create a cohort of instructors who will meet to discuss anti-racist pedagogy and student learning in relation to working with first year students.

Fellows will need to commit to attending all 1-hour FYE Teaching Fellows meetings in spring 2021 and fall 2021 semesters. Meetings will take place in: March, April, May, September, October and November.

FYE Teaching Fellow positions are open only to those planning to teach an AugSem course in the fall of 2021.

The Department of Public Safety discovered an issue with one of the general campus accesses provided to students, staff and faculty which allows them to access academic buildings during normal building hours. This issue will only affect those students, staff and faculty who joined Augsburg during the 2018-2019 academic year and will prevent them from gaining access to the academic buildings.

We are not able to identify all persons affected by this and request that if you experience any issues getting into the academic buildings with your fob to call Public Safety at 612-330-1717 so we are able to determine if you were affected. Our staff should be able to resolve the issue immediately.

Make A Difference for Middle Schoolers! Judge Virtual Criminal Justice Reform Debates This Spring

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide debate programming to middle & high school students in the Twin Cities. We are still providing middle school debate tournaments during COVID-19 pandemic – virtually! We need volunteers to make it happen.

You can judge tournaments from home. No experience required. Sign up today!

This year, middle school debate tournaments will be split into separate dates for rookie & novice (for new debaters) and JV & varsity (experienced debaters) divisions. You are welcome to judge either division, but if you’ve never debated before, it may be helpful to try a Rookie & Novice tournament first. No experience is needed to judge! We will train you virtually.

Fifth House Ensemble Chapel Series

In collaboration with the Augsburg Music Department, Campus Ministry is excited to welcome the Fifth House Ensemble to chapel as part of their residency at Augsburg for a 5-part series of Deep Listening. Fifth House Ensemble taps the collaborative spirit of chamber music to create engaging performances and interactive educational programs, forging meaningful partnerships with unexpected venues, artists of other disciplines, educational institutions, and audiences of every type. Fifth House Ensemble will be leading chapel on January 28 & 29, and February 2, 4 & 5. The services will be live streamed on Zoom..

Fifth House Ensemble will partner with Augsburg University to work with students from the school of music, the McPhail Music Center, and the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship for a semester-long residency focused on community and co-creation. Fifth House will work directly with composition students to develop their works and provide guidance through entrepreneurship workshops focusing on life outside of school. In the spirit of community, they will introduce Deep Listening – a mindfulness practice motivated by the idea that communal music-making is everyone’s birthright. Throughout the residency, Fifth House also engages Michael Rohd, Quenna Lené Barrett, Leila Ramagopal Pertl and Brian Pertl for a community-focused project entitled We Are Good, exploring questions about our past, our present, and our future, focusing on the need for mutual respect, shared experience, and open dialogue.

Imam Makram El-Amin has worked for more than two decades as a religious and community leader, firmly rooted in the principle of our inherent human dignity. Imam El-Amin leads Al Maa’uun (Neighborly Needs) Community Outreach Services that addresses food insecurity, affordable housing, career services, and mentoring.
Lori Brandt Hale is Professor and Chair of Religion and Philosophy at Augsburg University, where she has taught since 1998. Brandt Hale has devoted her academic career both to teaching and to studying the life and legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
Rabbi Arielle LeKach-Rosenberg serves as Assistant Rabbi at Shir Tikvah with a focus on music, prayer and activism. She was ordained by the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College in June 2017. She spent her final two years of rabbinical school working as a full-time rabbinic fellow at B’nai Jeshurun in New York City.

Due Today Before Midnight — Batalden Applied Ethics Grant Student Proposals

Augsburg University’s students are invited to submit a Batalden student grant proposal to support student leadership in applied intersectional ethics on campus and/or in the local community. This student grant program defines applied ethics as work that focuses on, considers, and/or addresses public and/or private moral issues. The overarching objective of this grant is to support student work in intersectional applied ethics that promote social justice and social change. Grant funding for all student proposals is generously supported by Paul ’63 and LaVonne (Olson) Batalden ’63, and Stephen ’67 and Sandra Batalden.

Applied intersectional ethics: Intersectionality is a concept that emerged out of critical race and legal scholarship. This student grant supports work that explicitly addresses intersectionality and ethics. Student proposals should address how interdependent structures and systems of discrimination that perpetuate oppression are ethical issues.

Grant amount: Student proposals may request up to $3000 for the proposed work (including up to $1000 Augsburg student stipends — the proposal should include rationale for the stipend amount requested). Note: Proposals requesting more than $3000 must provide compelling rationale (along with a detailed budget) for the financial request. All funds must be used before May 31, 2021.

Eligibility: Augsburg student (undergraduate, graduate and/or alum). A staff or faculty advisors is required. *Note: Student proposals may include community members outside of Augsburg University, but non-Augsburg affiliated students are not eligible for stipends.

Priority deadline: January 22, 2021 (before midnight)

Funds for On-Campus Internship

Through generous contributions from alumni and donors during Give to the Max Day, the Strommen Center was able to create a fund to support internships for Augsburg students hosted by staff and faculty.

If you are interested in hosting an Augsburg student as an intern this spring please fill out the intern interest form. This form will be open until 5 pm on January 22nd.

•Positions should be at least 80 hours over the course of the semester
•The intern will be provided a stipend of $1,900 at the end of the internship
•Position can be remote or in-person depending on the operation of your department
•Departments who have not hosted an intern before will be prioritized
•Applicant must be a current student
•Strommen staff can support the department by helping to create the position description, develop the project or work, provide best practices in internships and supervision, and recruit a slate of candidates.
