“High Holy Day Primer”, created by Interfaith Fellow ‘17-’19 Wendy Goldberg, to help Augsburg know about this big season for Jews in our community.
1. The Jewish High Holy Day season runs from Fri. evening, Sept. 18 – Sun., Oct. 11. Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur are listed on secular calendars, but there is another 9-day holiday called Sukkot, right after Yom Kippur.
2. For college students, being away from home for these holidays can highlight the homesickness and the yearning to be in the nest, and for some, quite the opposite. If you celebrate Christmas, imagine staying on campus while most students return home for the holiday. If you celebrate Ramadan, this season is similar to that month of observance. All synagogues and the University of Minnesota Hillel will welcome students and we can help connect them, though everything is on Zoom this year.
3. How to be an ally: We encourage you to have conversations with your Jewish students and colleagues about their observances. They will likely welcome the questions or the greetings. And you could also move important meetings or events away from Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur. The 2020 dates for these holidays are:
Fri.– Sun., Sept.18-20: Rosh Hashannah begins at sundown on Sept. 18 and ends at nightfall on Sept. 20. Some American Jews celebrate for one day, others for two.
Sun., Sept. 27, Yom Kippur begins an hour before sundown and ends at nightfall on Monday, Sept. 28, and after a fully 25-hour fast and being in services most of those 25 hours, it’s unlikely that students would do any work on Monday, Sept. 28.
Sukkot begins at sundown on Fri., Oct. 2. The first two days are “Holy Days” where some Jews don’t work, use electricity, engage in commerce. Sukkot ends at sundown on either on Oct. 9 or 10.

You already know that what you post on social media can impact your reputation, and you probably monitor what you do or say accordingly.

During the pandemic, there’s a new thing to watch out for: photos that don’t reflect physical distancing or the appropriate use of masks. Such photos can go viral, generating negative feedback.

This is especially important for social media posts that represent Augsburg. In order to support students, staff, faculty, and their families, we are following the Minnesota Department of Health’s guidelines for institutions of higher education, as well as Governor Walz’s executive order mandating face coverings in public spaces indoors as well as outdoors where physical distancing cannot be maintained. Photos posted to Augsburg social media accounts or photos that tag Augsburg should reflect these practices.

Please also keep in mind that photos from before the pandemic may be misinterpreted. For now please do not use old photos that show groups of people close together for Augsburg-related communications.

Beginning Thursday September 10th, we will be resuming some of our traditional services at Einstein’s and The Commons.

Einstein’s will provide hot sandwiches and coffee drinks along with the chilled beverages and grab ‘n go items. Coffee and bottled beverages will still be dispensed by our staff. Payment will be limited to Flex points, meal replacement and credit cards. No cash transactions at this time.

The Commons will provide expanded hot breakfast and lunch service. Faculty and staff are welcome to use The Commons, though we are still not using cash for payment. All meal plans, including commuter meal plans and flex points will be acceptable. You would be able to pay for your meal with a credit card as well.

Lindell Library’s HeinOnline database added a new collection, “COVID-19 in America: Response, Issues, and Law”, which provides:

Factual information on the impact of COVID-19 on public health, economics, society, and the world;

Scholarly articles and external links to supplement their research; and

Hundreds of Congressional Research Service (CRS) and Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports.

“COVID-19 in America” provides insight into the federal response to the pandemic, covering widely reported topics such as vaccine development, as well as less publicized topics such as the pandemic’s effect on organ donation and transplantation, support for the homeless, and more.

CampusClear is a free self-screening free application for iPhones and Androids that everyone in the Augsburg community must complete daily before coming to campus or leaving their residence hall. COVID-19 testing will be available to Augsburg students, staff, and faculty on Thursday (today) from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the quad at Augsburg. There is no preregistration and the testing will be walk-up only, first come-first served, so there may be a brief wait for services. Drive-up and walk-up testing are also available at the People’s Center, 425 20th Ave S, (one block west from Augsburg on Riverside Avenue) Monday through Friday, at the outdoor testing site on 20th Avenue.

The testing process consists of on-site registration with People’s Center, a brief medical appointment (about 10 minutes) for assessment of symptoms/exposure and discussion of risks, and a throat swab test. Results are usually available in 3-5 days and participants will get a call back for both negative or positive results. For this event, result calls will likely go out on Monday 9/14 or Tuesday 9/15.

Participants will need:
Insurance cards/information if they have health insurance. While insurance will be billed, participants are not responsible for any out of pocket expenses, such as copays or deductibles. No one will be turned away for lack of insurance.

A contact phone number to get test results.

A face covering, which must be worn at all times on the test site. Disposable face masks are available at the test site, but participants are encouraged to wear their own masks.

Participants should also be prepared to discuss symptoms or possible COVID-19 exposure and medical risk factors with the health care professional.

HeinOnline COVID-19 in America database

There are several unscrupulous businesses out there who attempt to sell you outrageously priced toner over the phone. We have already gotten a call from someone (mis)representing themselves as our printer vendor – Marco, and referencing our fleet of Sharp copiers.

They may start with asking you what is the model or ID# of the copier near your desk. They may say they have extra stock of the toner you need or the price is due to increase. They may offer to ship you a toner on trial. Regardless of what they say, DO NOT give them any information as they will over-bill for anything they send. All you need to know is that you get toner for your copier or printer by either calling the Copy Center at extension x1054 or emailing at copyctr@augsburg.edu.

You will NEVER need to purchase toner for machines in your area, it will ALWAYS be provided by the Copy Center.

Any toner received in this way is often 2nd rate or low quality/old and can cause issues if installed in any of our fleet of printers.

A quick way to ditch these “toner phoners” is to tell them you would like to transfer them to the person in the organization who purchases toner – they will very often hang up before you can transfer them!

Augsburg’s commitment to community service and engagement is long-standing and deeply held. Since 1992, day undergraduate students have participated in service projects on City Engagement Day, even before they’ve had their first class. The COVID-19 pandemic requires us to press pause on City Engagement Day this year, but our commitment to community building is unwavering. Instead of sending hundreds of incoming students out to serve Minneapolis neighborhoods and organizations, we are encouraging students, faculty, and staff to engage with their local communities in ways that are meaningful to them personally.

For those looking for local options for engagement, Sabo Center staff members have compiled this list of local opportunities for community service. We will update this document as we learn of new opportunities, and we have not vetted every one, so take care in considering COVID-19 safety practices, the organization’s capacity to host groups, and other key questions.

You already know that what you post on social media can impact your reputation, and you probably monitor what you do or say accordingly.

During the pandemic, there’s a new thing to watch out for: photos that don’t reflect physical distancing or the appropriate use of masks. Such photos can go viral, generating negative feedback.

This is especially important for social media posts that represent Augsburg. In order to support students, staff, faculty, and their families, we are following the Minnesota Department of Health’s guidelines for institutions of higher education, as well as Governor Walz’s executive order mandating face coverings in public spaces indoors as well as outdoors where physical distancing cannot be maintained. Photos posted to Augsburg social media accounts or photos that tag Augsburg should reflect these practices.

Please also keep in mind that photos from before the pandemic may be misinterpreted. For now please do not use old photos that show groups of people close together for Augsburg-related communications.

Please join me in congratulating Taiwana Shambley who has been selected as the first recipient of the Batalden Student Scholar in Applied Ethics fellowship for 2020-21. This merit-based fellowship provides an Augsburg student with an opportunity to support their scholarly interests in applied ethics. Toward this end, Taiwana will receive a $3,000 stipend over the course of the academic year. Taiwana will work with the Batalden Faculty Scholar in Applied Ethics to pursue her interest in abolition theory, decolonization, and communism in the context of postsecondary education. This fellowship position is generously supported by Paul ’63 and LaVonne (Olson) Batalden ’63, and Stephen ’67 and Sandra Batalden.
