Kudos to Team Lindell

Congratulations to the team at Lindell Library for organizing and hosting the first ever Upper Midwest Region WMS User Group meeting! Fifty participants representing twelve academic libraries gathered at Augsburg last Friday to share information and tips on the finer points of WMS (WorldShare Management System), the platform used by participating libraries to manage their online catalogs and all basic library operations.

Mike Bloomberg served on the planning committee and was instrumental in bringing this meeting to Augsburg in the first place. Rebecca Ganzel served as hostess extraordinaire throughout the day’s festivities. Karen Alexander and Karen Hogan presented on their experience implementing a new interlibrary loan management system, and Rebecca Ganzel and Stewart Van Cleve discussed how they created customized search boxes for locating music and video titles in WMS.

Thanks to each and every one of you for all your hard work and for making all our colleagues feel so welcome throughout the day! Congratulations on making this event such a huge success!

Be a part of one of the biggest celebrations at Augsburg! Each December, Augsburg students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends celebrate Advent at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis with word and song. Students can join the Liturgical Team and carry bells, candle, banner or torch as part of the Gospel Processional (if not already in the choir or orchestra).

Advent Vespers is the first Friday and Saturday in December, with services on Friday at 5pm and 8pm, and Saturday at 2pm and 5pm. Practices are on Tuesday at 4:30 pm and Thursday at 6:45 pm. Transportation for the liturgical team is provided between Augsburg campus and Central Lutheran Church, as well as some meals and snacks. Many past participants have commented on how meaningful their participation in Advent Vespers is – that they feel a true sense of the Auggie spirit.

Judges will watch high school debate rounds and evaluate teams on logic, effective argumentation, and speaking skills. The judge picks a winner, assigns speaking points to individual students, and provides written feedback on their decision. No experience? No worries. We will train you. Judges will also enjoy free pizza at this great service learning opportunity!

URGO Research and Travel Grants Available

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) offers $1,000 Academic-Year Research Grants to fund 100 hours of undergraduate research. Undergraduates who are interested in conducting research during the year are encouraged to seek out ongoing faculty research projects that they may join.

URGO also offers Conference Travel Grants of up to $850 for undergraduates who have been accepted to present their research at a professional conference.
Both applications can be found on the URGO website. The funds may be used at any time during the academic year, however the grants are given out on a rolling basis, so we recommend interested students apply in the fall.

Hear from past researchers and get the scoop on writing a strong application!

The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program where undergraduate students are funded to conduct research under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Student researchers gain important analytic, technical, and writing skills that are important for graduate school and careers. The URGO program is also includes a weekly Speaker Series focused on research skills and professional development, as well as weekly seminars with fellow researchers. Students from all disciplines are invited to participate, and past projects have ranged from biology lab work to theater performance.

URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $4,000 stipend while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $2,000 stipend. Both receive a significant campus housing discount as well. The program runs from mid-May to the end of July and students must plan to be enrolled at Augsburg for Fall 2018 to be eligible.

URGO Summer Research Assistantships
In addition to the URGO Summer Research Program, URGO also funds 100-hour summer research assistantships where undergraduate students assist a faculty member with an ongoing research project. Research Assistants and mentors determine how to spread the 100 hours of work over the course of the summer and it is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Augsburg Hockey & PA Studies Stuffed Animal Toss Nov 10 & 11

Join the Augsburg Men’s and Women’s hockey teams and the Physician Assistant Studies program for their Animals for Smiles event! This is a stuffed animal toss benefiting Children’s Minnesota in appreciation for hosting PA students during their clinical rotations. Animals will be given out to Children’s patients. The toss will take place during both home hockey games against Bethel University on November 10th and 11th at 7:00 pm. Stuffed animals will be tossed onto the ice following the first period. Please bring a new stuffed animal, preferably wrapped or bagged so it will stay clean during the toss.

Diversity and Inequality in Global Professional Practice
April 30 – May 13, 2018

Program Description: This program explores diversity and social inequality as a prerequisite to professional social work practice in a global context – specifically, in the context of Southeast Asia and Hmong culture. A critical dimension of professional practice is competence in work with diverse populations. Learning in this course is meant to complement learning in other social work supporting and foundation courses.

A large part of student learning in this course occurs through self-exploration, since knowledge of self is critical to professional social work practice. In pre travel meetings, students use readings, experiential exercises, dialogue, and assignments to deepen awareness of themselves as members of social groups. Students also learn about others’ social identities through course assignments, exercises and dialogue – completed both prior to and following travel to Thailand and Laos. Finally, the course provides an opportunity to improve communication with others through regular dialogue practice.

Bone Marrow Registry Drive – TODAY

In partnership with Delete Blood Cancer and the There Goes my Hero Foundation Augsburg will be holding a bone marrow registry drive in the Christensen Center on Wednesday November 8th from 2:00pm-4:00pm. It only takes five minutes of your time. A simple cheek swab registers you to become a donor in which time you could save a life. There is a huge need for donors. Six out of ten patients do not have a match so they will not receive the lifesaving transplant they need. You have the power to heal! Matches are very difficult to find because patients need donors who are a genetic match. If you are a match for a patient in need the national registry will contact you and ask if you would be willing to either through a blood donation or a marrow donation. Your participation in this drive could save a life.

This panel, composed of faculty and staff, will discuss specific strategies for devising, integrating, and assessing writing assignments. Topics discussed will be:

– Writing within STEM Disciplines: Writing plays a significant role in STEM curriculum; it makes students career-ready because writing is a big part of any profession, but, more importantly, it helps them organize thoughts and clarify thinking. Michael Wentzel will discuss strategies for scaffolding lab report writing in science classes.

– Writing in Blended Learning: Students in hybrid and online courses sometimes complain that online forum discussions are boring and repetitive “busywork.” Bonnie Tensen will discuss strategies for varying assignment writing prompts that encourage students to think more critically about assigned texts and take greater ownership of the conversation.

– Effective and Efficient Feedback: Grading student writing can be time-consuming, so it is important to be strategic and provide feedback that helps students recognize areas of strength as well as ways to improve without overwhelming them or you. John Schmit will discuss how to streamline your grading while simultaneously providing valuable feedback.

– Responding to Writing from Non-Native Speakers of English: Although native speakers of English also have problems with writing, non-native speakers’ problems can be quite different, and the approach taken by the instructor needs to be different as well. Cari Maguire will provide suggestions for how to recognize and respond to typical writing problems for ESL students.

Be a part of one of the biggest celebrations at Augsburg! Each December, Augsburg students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends celebrate Advent at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis with word and song. Students can join the Liturgical Team and carry bells, candle, banner or torch as part of the Gospel Processional (if not already in the choir or orchestra).

Advent Vespers is the first Friday and Saturday in December, with services on Friday at 5pm and 8pm, and Saturday at 2pm and 5pm. Practices are on Tuesday at 4:30 pm and Thursday at 6:45 pm. Transportation for the liturgical team is provided between Augsburg campus and Central Lutheran Church, as well as some meals and snacks. Many past participants have commented on how meaningful their participation in Advent Vespers is – that they feel a true sense of the Auggie spirit.

Coming changes to Google Drive for faculty and staff

October was Cyber Security Month. Come to an information session to hear briefly what the current cyber threats are, learn some tips that apply at work or home, share your experiences and strategies.

Also in December IT is adding new tool to Google Drive to protect regulated data. If faculty or staff have regulated data in Drive you will get an email notification. What is regulated data? Come and find out! Adding this tool means we will not dissuade you from keeping FERPA data in Google Drive in 2018. We want to you to be able to fully use Google Drive in your work.

There will also be a required online self-paced information security training coming for faculty and staff as part of our work on information security. Come and find out more!

Represent Colombia at the 2018 National Model UN Conference in NYC

Applications are now being accepted for delegates for the 2018 National Model UN Conference in New York City. Augsburg University will send a delegation of 16 students representing Colombia to this year’s conference, which will take place March 16 – 23, 2018.

This is a 4-credit Spring Semester course, and students accepted into the program need to enroll in POL 368 (or a POL 499 independent study) and pay a $500 program fee, which covers travel, conference registration, and hotel costs for the week in New York. Enrollment limited to 16 students and priority deadline for applying is Nov. 13.

This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement!

URGO Research and Travel Grants Available

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) offers $1,000 Academic-Year Research Grants to fund 100 hours of undergraduate research. Undergraduates who are interested in conducting research during the year are encouraged to seek out ongoing faculty research projects that they may join.

URGO also offers Conference Travel Grants of up to $850 for undergraduates who have been accepted to present their research at a professional conference.
Both applications can be found on the URGO website. The funds may be used at any time during the academic year, however the grants are given out on a rolling basis, so we recommend interested students apply in the fall.

Paid Summer Experience: URGO Summer Research Info Sessions Nov 28 & 29

Hear from past researchers and get the scoop on writing a strong application!

The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program where undergraduate students are funded to conduct research under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Student researchers gain important analytic, technical, and writing skills that are important for graduate school and careers. The URGO program is also includes a weekly Speaker Series focused on research skills and professional development, as well as weekly seminars with fellow researchers. Students from all disciplines are invited to participate, and past projects have ranged from biology lab work to theater performance.

URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $4,000 stipend while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $2,000 stipend. Both receive a significant campus housing discount as well. The program runs from mid-May to the end of July and students must plan to be enrolled at Augsburg for Fall 2018 to be eligible.

URGO Summer Research Assistantships
In addition to the URGO Summer Research Program, URGO also funds 100-hour summer research assistantships where undergraduate students assist a faculty member with an ongoing research project. Research Assistants and mentors determine how to spread the 100 hours of work over the course of the summer and it is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

From Microinequities to Inclusion

“From Microinequities to Inclusion” is a hybrid, group-format e-learning workshop that provides an introduction to the concept of microinequities: small, often subtle expressions of bias and exclusion. Relevant to employees of all levels, participation in this workshop can positively impact all internal and external interactions. Participants explore microinequities across national cultures as well as cultures related to gender, ethnicity, language, generations, and sexual orientation, and will learn how to identify and respond to specific scenarios. Stuffed Animal Toss Nov 10 & 11

Join the Augsburg Men’s and Women’s hockey teams and the Physician Assistant Studies program for their Animals for Smiles event! This is a stuffed animal toss benefiting Children’s Minnesota in appreciation for hosting PA students during their clinical rotations. Animals will be given out to Children’s patients. The toss will take place during both home hockey games against Bethel University on November 10th and 11th at 7:00 pm. Stuffed animals will be tossed onto the ice following the first period. Please bring a new stuffed animal, preferably wrapped or bagged so it will stay clean during the toss.

If you qualify for and enroll in one of these programs, your health coverage is managed through the Department of Human Services.

Bone Marrow Registry Drive

In partnership with Delete Blood Cancer and the There Goes my Hero Foundation Augsburg will be holding a bone marrow registry drive in the Christensen Center on Wednesday November 8th from 2:00pm-4:00pm. It only takes five minutes of your time. A simple cheek swab registers you to become a donor in which time you could save a life. There is a huge need for donors. Six out of ten patients do not have a match so they will not receive the lifesaving transplant they need. You have the power to heal! Matches are very difficult to find because patients need donors who are a genetic match. If you are a match for a patient in need the national registry will contact you and ask if you would be willing to either through a blood donation or a marrow donation. Your participation in this drive could save a life.

Free apples at Campus Cupboard + Donations Needed

Hi everyone! Come to the Cupboard in the Foss Lobby to pick up some freshly picked apples that has been generously donated. While apples last!

Campus Cupboard is also in need of donations. Please consider donating to us if you’re willing and able to.

Here are some items we are in need of:
– Grains like dried pasta, instant rice
– Canned soups (any kind except tomato. We are stocked on tomato!)
– Proteins like small jars of peanut butter, beans, canned tuna and chicken
– Healthy snacks like granola bars, crackers, dried fruits, popcorn
– Baking supplies like sugar, salt, 2lb bags of flour, baking soda/powder
– Spices like paprika, cumin, cayenne, turmeric, etc
– Toothpaste, toothbrushes, pads, tampons, etc.

We are also taking clothing donations! Please drop off donations at Campus Ministry, the Welcome Desk in Christensen, or the Campus Cupboard table in the Foss Lobby.

Are you a student interested in being a part of Advent Vespers?

Be a part of one of the biggest celebrations at Augsburg! Each December, Augsburg students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends celebrate Advent at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis with word and song. Students can join the Liturgical Team and carry bells, candle, banner or torch as part of the Gospel Processional (if not already in the choir or orchestra).

Advent Vespers is the first Friday and Saturday in December, with services on Friday at 5pm and 8pm, and Saturday at 2pm and 5pm. Practices are on Tuesday at 4:30 pm and Thursday at 6:45 pm. Transportation for the liturgical team is provided between Augsburg campus and Central Lutheran Church, as well as some meals and snacks. Many past participants have commented on how meaningful their participation in Advent Vespers is – that they feel a true sense of the Auggie spirit.

Represent Colombia at the 2018 National Model UN Conference in NYC

Applications are now being accepted for delegates for the 2018 National Model UN Conference in New York City. Augsburg University will send a delegation of 16 students representing Colombia to this year’s conference, which will take place March 16 – 23, 2018.

This is a 4-credit Spring Semester course, and students accepted into the program need to enroll in POL 368 (or a POL 499 independent study) and pay a $500 program fee, which covers travel, conference registration, and hotel costs for the week in New York.

Enrollment limited to 16 students and priority deadline for applying is Nov. 13.

This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement!

URGO Research and Travel Grants Available

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) offers $1,000 Academic-Year Research Grants to fund 100 hours of student research. Students who are interested in conducting research during the year are encouraged to seek out ongoing faculty research projects that they may join.

URGO also offers Conference Travel Grants of up to $850 for students who have been accepted to present their research at a professional conference.
Both applications can be found on the URGO website. The funds may be used at any time during the academic year, however the grants are given out on a rolling basis, so we recommend interested students apply in the fall.

Summer Undergraduate Research in Biomedical Ethics

The Mayo Clinic seeks applicants for its 2018 summer undergraduate research program in biomedical ethics. This program is highly competitive and 4-5 students will be selected. Each student will be placed with a faculty mentor for approximately 10 weeks. Students will participate in educational session on bioethics research and lunch meetings with faculty.

Post-Baccalaureate Program in Biomedical Ethics Research

The Mayo Clinic seeks applicants for a one-year, 2018-2019 academic year, post-baccalaureate research experience in empirical biomedical ethics as part of the Mayo Clinic Graduate Research Employment Program (GREP). GREP is designed for individuals who plan to attend graduate or medical school and must receive their bachelor’s degree before the position starts.
Interested applicants should email the following materials to bioethics@mayo.edu by March 16, 2018.
1. Cover letter describing your careers goals and how biomedical ethics research relates to those plans
2. Resume/CV including your major, relevant coursework, honors, and related experiences

Have you been wondering about what it would be like to dedicate a year to serving others, living in intentional community, and discovering where and how you are being called to use your gifts?

If so, Lutheran Service Year Programs want to connect with you!

Each year, more than 200 LIFE (Lutheran Immersion & Formation Experiences) in Service volunteers serve within the United States and around the world! LIFE in Service programs include: Border Servant Corps, Lutheran Volunteer Corps, Urban Servant Corps, and Young Adults in Global Mission.

Representatives from these four programs will be on campus Tuesday, November 7. Please stop by the table in Christensen Center from 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM to learn about opportunities for you to serve through LIFE in Service programs. There will also be a special chapel at 11:30am on November 7th led by Lutheran Volunteer Corps.

Leaders from each LIFE in Service Organizations work together to provide opportunities for people in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) to live, learn, and serve in their setting. Nobel Peace Prize Forum | Minneapolis – Updates

We are happy to announce that the Forum itself is changing and growing. A second Forum, located in Oslo, launched last year and will occur annually on December 11, immediately following the Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony.

Reflecting the development of this sister forum, the 30th Nobel Peace Prize Forum in Minneapolis, which will take place September 21-22, 2018, will now bear the Minneapolis designation. We are excited about the growth of the Norwegian event and look forward to our ongoing partnership with the Norwegian Nobel Institute as we continue to support the goals and values enshrined in the will of Alfred Nobel.

Due to this change, our URL and Social Media platforms have been updated to reflect our Minneapolis designation. Please see the changes below and make sure to update any references you may have regarding our website.
