Marquell Moorer ’18 offered a Peace Corps Fellowship

Marquell Moorer ‘18 has accepted a position as a Peace Corps Fellow in Mongolia/China. After graduation in May, he will become a Secondary English Teacher Trainer, serving for two years.

The Peace Corps Volunteer program is often called life-defining by the more than 220,000 Americans who have served. Volunteers get the chance to fully integrate into a host country community, where they live and work on projects ranging from education to business development. Peace Corps volunteers like Marquell serve for a minimum of 2 full years and may be eligible for loan forgiveness, graduate school discounts and other benefits.

Marquell studied abroad multiple times and has a wealth of intercultural experience to bring to his new role – congratulations Marquell!

Represent Colombia at the 2018 National Model UN Conference in NYC

Applications are now being accepted for delegates for the 2018 National Model UN Conference in New York City. Augsburg University will send a delegation of 16 students representing Colombia to this year’s conference, which will take place March 16 – 23, 2018.

This is a 4-credit Spring Semester course, and students accepted into the program need to enroll in POL 368 (or a POL 499 independent study) and pay a $500 program fee, which covers travel, conference registration, and hotel costs for the week in New York. Enrollment limited to 16 students and priority deadline for applying is Nov. 13.

This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement!

We all say we teach critical thinking, but when was the last time we thought deeply about how to do it effectively? Critical thinking is an institutional student learning outcome. This year, it’s being assessed once again. In year’s past, our students have not performed as well as we would like. In this workshop faculty will be introduced to Bloom and Costa’s models of critical thinking. Faculty are asked to bring an assignment, quiz, exam, or activity that they are currently using and then we will work on integrating the prompts and levels of critical thinking into these assignments or exams. Mary Lowe of the Religion Department will be leading the workshop.

On the spring break program, Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas, Mexico, you will meet with and learn about various Indigenous people’s approaches to social activism, learn about Indigenous cosmology and spirituality, Indigenous sovereignty or autonomy, and Indigenous cooperative/businesses and educational systems.

You can choose one 4-credit course to take on this program:
AIS 305 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (elective course)
AIS 490 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (Keystone course)
CCS 295 – Topics: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico (meets requirement for CCS major of one travel seminar and an elective, OR general elective for non-majors)

Are you a student interested in being a part of Advent Vespers?

Be a part of one of the biggest celebrations at Augsburg! Each December, Augsburg students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends celebrate Advent at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis with word and song. Students can join the Liturgical Team and carry bells, candle, banner or torch as part of the Gospel Processional (if not already in the choir or orchestra).

Advent Vespers is the first Friday and Saturday in December, with services on Friday at 5pm and 8pm, and Saturday at 2pm and 5pm. Practices are on Tuesday at 4:30 pm and Thursday at 6:45 pm. Transportation for the liturgical team is provided between Augsburg campus and Central Lutheran Church, as well as some meals and snacks. Many past participants have commented on how meaningful their participation in Advent Vespers is – that they feel a true sense of the Auggie spirit.

Professor Vela-McConnell Publishes on Sex Abuse Scandals

Professor James Vela-McConnell recently published “Behind Closed Doors: Organizational Secrecy, Stigma, and Sex Abuse within the Catholic Church.” The article was published in vol. 48 of Studies in Symbolic Interaction. The volume’s edition title is Oppression and Resistance: Structure, Agency, Transformation.

This is the second scholarly publication by Professor Vela-McConnell this semester!

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is searching for debate judges for high school debate tournaments this fall. Judges will watch high school debate rounds and evaluate teams on logic, effective argumentation, and speaking skills. The judge picks a winner, assigns speaking points to individual students, and provides written feedback on their decision. No experience? No worries. We will train you. Judges will also enjoy free pizza at this great service learning opportunity!

Each year, more than 200 LIFE (Lutheran Immersion & Formation Experiences) in Service volunteers serve within the United States and around the world! LIFE in Service programs include: Border Servant Corps, Lutheran Volunteer Corps, Urban Servant Corps, and Young Adults in Global Mission.

URGO Research and Travel Grants Available

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) offers $1,000 Academic-Year Research Grants to fund 100 hours of student research. Students who are interested in conducting research during the year are encouraged to seek out ongoing faculty research projects that they may join.

URGO also offers Conference Travel Grants of up to $850 for students who have been accepted to present their research at a professional conference.
Both applications can be found on the URGO website. The funds may be used at any time during the academic year, however the grants are given out on a rolling basis, so we recommend interested students apply in the fall.

We all say we teach critical thinking, but when was the last time we thought deeply about how to do it effectively? Critical thinking is an institutional student learning outcome. This year, it’s being assessed once again. In year’s past, our students have not performed as well as we would like. In this workshop faculty will be introduced to Bloom and Costa’s models of critical thinking. Faculty are asked to bring an assignment, quiz, exam, or activity that they are currently using and then we will work on integrating the prompts and levels of critical thinking into these assignments or exams. Mary Lowe of the Religion Department will be leading the workshop.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) continues, and MNSure open enrollment runs Nov. 1, 2017, to January 14, 2018. MNsure is Minnesota’s health insurance marketplace where individuals, families and small businesses can shop, compare and choose health insurance coverage.

MNsure is the only place you can apply for financial help to lower the cost of your monthly insurance premium and out-of-pocket costs. Most Minnesotans who enroll through MNsure qualify for financial help.

Also available to those who qualify are low-cost and free health insurance options provided through government-sponsored health insurance programs Medical Assistance and MinnesotaCare. If you qualify for and enroll in one of these programs, your health coverage is managed through the Department of Human Services.

Be a part of one of the biggest celebrations at Augsburg! Each December, Augsburg students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends celebrate Advent at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis with word and song. Students can join the Liturgical Team and carry bells, candle, banner or torch as part of the Gospel Processional (if not already in the choir or orchestra).

Advent Vespers is the first Friday and Saturday in December, with services on Friday at 5pm and 8pm, and Saturday at 2pm and 5pm. Practices are on Tuesday at 4:30 pm and Thursday at 6:45 pm. Transportation for the liturgical team is provided between Augsburg campus and Central Lutheran Church, as well as some meals and snacks. Many past participants have commented on how meaningful their participation in Advent Vespers is – that they feel a true sense of the Auggie spirit.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is searching for debate judges for high school debate tournaments this fall. Judges will watch high school debate rounds and evaluate teams on logic, effective argumentation, and speaking skills. The judge picks a winner, assigns speaking points to individual students, and provides written feedback on their decision. No experience? No worries. We will train you. Judges will also enjoy free pizza at this great service learning opportunity!

Boren Awards provide funding to U.S. undergraduate students (first years through seniors) to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad: Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and Middle East.

In exchange for the funding awardees work one year at a federal agency around issues of national security defined very broadly, such as sustainable development, environment, disease, migration and economic competitiveness as well as more traditional security concerns.

Awardees (who must be U.S. citizens) can be given up to:
$20,000/Academic year study abroad
$10,000/Semester study abroad
$8,000/Summer study abroad (only for STEM students)

Competitive applicants will generally have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Gaspar will present on how the struggle for LGBTQ awareness and rights among Indigenous communities plays a vital role in both land defense and in the dismantling of patriarchal and militaristic structures. Represent Colombia at the 2018 National Model UN Conference in NYC

Applications are now being accepted for delegates for the 2018 National Model UN Conference in New York City. Augsburg University will send a delegation of 16 students representing Colombia to this year’s conference, which will take place March 16 – 23, 2018.

This is a 4-credit Spring Semester course, and students accepted into the program need to enroll in POL 368 (or a POL 499 independent study) and pay a $500 program fee, which covers travel, conference registration, and hotel costs for the week in New York. Enrollment limited to 16 students and priority deadline for applying is Nov. 13.

This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement!

URGO Research and Travel Grants Available

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) offers $1,000 Academic-Year Research Grants to fund 100 hours of student research. Students who are interested in conducting research during the year are encouraged to seek out ongoing faculty research projects that they may join.

URGO also offers Conference Travel Grants of up to $850 for students who have been accepted to present their research at a professional conference.
Both applications can be found on the URGO website. The funds may be used at any time during the academic year, however the grants are given out on a rolling basis, so we recommend interested students apply in the fall.

The Mayo Clinic seeks applicants for a one-year, 2018-2019 academic year, post-baccalaureate research experience in empirical biomedical ethics as part of the Mayo Clinic Graduate Research Employment Program (GREP). GREP is designed for individuals who plan to attend graduate or medical school and must receive their bachelor’s degree before the position starts.
Interested applicants should email the following materials to bioethics@mayo.edu by March 16, 2018.
1. Cover letter describing your careers goals and how biomedical ethics research relates to those plans
2. Resume/CV including your major, relevant coursework, honors, and related experiences
3. 5-10 page writing sample (such as a course paper), preferably on a topic in bioethics

Critical Thinking Workshop on Thursday

We all say we teach critical thinking, but when was the last time we thought deeply about how to do it effectively? Critical thinking is an institutional student learning outcome. This year, it’s being assessed once again. In year’s past, our students have not performed as well as we would like. In this workshop faculty will be introduced to Bloom and Costa’s models of critical thinking. Faculty are asked to bring an assignment, quiz, exam, or activity that they are currently using and then we will work on integrating the prompts and levels of critical thinking into these assignments or exams. Mary Lowe of the Religion Department will be leading the workshop.

Honduran LGBTQ and Indigenous Human Rights Speaker, Nov. 1

Gaspar Sánchez, Honduran human rights defender and sexual diversity coordinator at COPINH (Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous People Organizations of Honduras), will be on campus on Wed., Nov. 1st. You are invited to join us at these events:

Uniting to resist attacks on our Land and Identities: Building on the Queer Indigenous Framework in the Americas.
• 11:10-12:20 in the Chapel
• 1:50-3:00 in Old Main 105
Gaspar will present on how the struggle for LGBTQ awareness and rights among Indigenous communities plays a vital role in both land defense and in the dismantling of patriarchal and militaristic structures. Gaspar will also discuss what you can do in solidarity with COPINH and others facing repression in Honduras, including supporting the Berta Cáceres Human Rights in Honduras Act (HR1299). (This presentation will be translated into English.)

Come join URGO and Study Abroad/Study Away to learn about this spectacular opportunity for students to not only receive funding for study abroad and learn a less commonly taught language, but to start a career working on important national and international issues after graduation!

Boren Awards provide funding to U.S. undergraduate students (first years through seniors) to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad: Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and Middle East.

In exchange for the funding awardees work one year at a federal agency around issues of national security defined very broadly, such as sustainable development, environment, disease, migration and economic competitiveness as well as more traditional security concerns.

Awardees (who must be U.S. citizens) can be given up to:
$20,000/Academic year study abroad
$10,000/Semester study abroad
$8,000/Summer study abroad (only for STEM students)

Competitive applicants will generally have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Represent Colombia at the 2018 National Model UN Conference in NYC

Applications are now being accepted for delegates for the 2018 National Model UN Conference in New York City. Augsburg University will send a delegation of 16 students representing Colombia to this year’s conference, which will take place March 16 – 23, 2018.

This is a 4-credit Spring Semester course, and students accepted into the program need to enroll in POL 368 (or a POL 499 independent study) and pay a $500 program fee, which covers travel, conference registration, and hotel costs for the week in New York. Enrollment limited to 16 students and priority deadline for applying is Nov. 13.

This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement!

Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas | Spring-Break Abroad Study in Mexico on Spring Break

Spend your spring break in Mexico and earn 4 credits!!!

On the spring break program, Indigenous Social Activism in Chiapas, Mexico, you will meet with and learn about various Indigenous people’s approaches to social activism, learn about Indigenous cosmology and spirituality, Indigenous sovereignty or autonomy, and Indigenous cooperative/businesses and educational systems.

You can choose one 4-credit course to take on this program:
AIS 305 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (elective course)
AIS 490 – Indigenous Issues of the Americas (Keystone course)
CCS 295 – Topics: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico (meets requirement for CCS major of one travel seminar and an elective, OR general elective for non-majors)
SPA 495 – Topics: Global Crossroads & Indigenous Resistance in Chiapas, Mexico (meets requirement for one culture class or one elective (for the SPA major or minor))

This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement!

Free Pizza and Service Learning Hours with Minnesota Urban Debate League

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is searching for debate judges for high school debate tournaments this fall. Judges will watch high school debate rounds and evaluate teams on logic, effective argumentation, and speaking skills. The judge picks a winner, assigns speaking points to individual students, and provides written feedback on their decision. No experience? No worries. We will train you. Judges will also enjoy free pizza at this great service learning opportunity!

The remaining core debate tournaments will happen at these dates and locations:

November 10th-11th: UMBrooks (U of M, West Bank)
December 8th-9th: The UDL Championship (Location TBD)

Each year, more than 200 LIFE (Lutheran Immersion & Formation Experiences) in Service volunteers serve within the United States and around the world! LIFE in Service programs include: Border Servant Corps, Lutheran Volunteer Corps, Urban Servant Corps, and Young Adults in Global Mission.

Representatives from these four programs will be on campus Tuesday, November 7.
