My Body Is My Vocation: Embracing Self-Care as a Sacred Calling
Chanequa Walker-Barnes
Thursday, September 19th, 11:00-12:00

But what if our vocation starts much closer to home, with the ways that we care for and nurture ourselves? This lecture explores how self-care transcends mere indulgence to become a spiritual discipline and vocation that helps us to cultivate resilience, compassion, a deeper connection with our faith, and ultimately, greater love for the world.
Chanequa Walker-Barnes, Ph.D., is a prominent scholar, theologian, and author, known for her thought-provoking work on racial justice and spirituality. With a deep commitment to social change, she combines her expertise in clinical psychology and theology to tackle issues of systemic oppression, cultural trauma, and their impact on individuals and society.

University Land Acknowledgement

submitted by farrisr@augsburg.edu

Augsburg’s land acknowledgement statement reads:

“Augsburg’s spirit is propelled by a heartbeat that started long before us. That heartbeat was present before our founding, when the land where Augsburg today stands was stewarded by the Dakota people. The Dakota are the original inhabitants of this area, and they are still here today. We honor their wisdom about this place and their recognition that we are all part of the same creation. We share their sense of obligation to the larger community, including to future generations.”

This land acknowledgement statement is used at commencement and at university convocations. Individuals who wish to use or create a different land acknowledgement for an event are responsible for ensuring the accuracy and appropriateness of their remarks.

Stage Direction by Darcey Engen Music Direction by Jill Dawe

Performances November 1–November 10

An Enemy of the People examines how a community responds when the local doctor threatens to expose that the town’s water source they rely on for tourism is contaminated. It raises questions of how far a community will go to protect their town’s secret so they can keep tourism dollars coming and circumvent a path to financial ruin. Scenes and songs will happen in close proximity to the audience, compelling them to feel as if they are part of the story. Immersed in the play’s dilemma, audiences will find themselves part of the climactic ending of the play when they actually vote to shape the ending of the story.

My Body Is My Vocation: Embracing Self-Care as a Sacred Calling
Chanequa Walker-Barnes
Thursday, September 19th, 11:00-12:00
Foss Center, Hoversten Chapel, Augsburg University
In religious contexts, vocation is usually defined as the work that the Divine calls us to do on behalf of others.

Memorial for “The Loveliest of Trees”—4 p.m. TODAY

submitted by finka2@augsburg.edu

All are invited to a memorial for the Loveliest of Trees (the Cottonwood tree behind Hagfors that was a gathering place for our community for many years), which came down in the storm on August 27th, 2024.

We will gather at 4:00 p.m. today, August 30th, 2024 at the tree. Shortly after gathering, there will be a short offering of interfaith blessings, prayers, and thanksgiving for the tree, and an opportunity for attendees to share memories, feelings and grief, hosted by our wonderful Campus Ministry.

Participants are asked to gather on the 20th Avenue side of the tree and, for safety, to not approach trunk or branches of the tree that are suspended from the surface of the ground.

Efforts lead by Professors Matt Beckman and Leon van Eck, in collaboration with our groundskeeping team, are being made to preserve the memory of tree in a manner that honors all it did with our community. We hope to be able to announce further information about these efforts in the near future.

Contact Alex Fink at finka2@augsburg.edu with any questions. Thank you all for coming together and supporting our community and neighbors.

Save the Date: Imagine Cedarfest, September 8 (11 a.m.–5 p.m.)

submitted by gilmerje@augsburg.edu

Imagine Cedarfest is a big, family-friendly block party for neighborhood connection and community organization. This event is a fantastic way to experience artists, musicians, and local businesses from the neighborhood and imagine a better future together.

When the Minnesota Highway Commission (now the Minnesota Department of Transportation or MnDOT) routed and constructed I-94 through the urban core of the Twin Cities in the ’60s, it destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses and displaced thousands. Now, as MnDOT evaluates options for the highway’s future, we have the opportunity to influence one of the biggest policy decisions in decades.

BONUS! Got a Weinie Dog?! Start training now and register for the Weinie Dog Race!!!
This is the second annual Wienery Wiener and Wiener-Wannabe Dog Race. This will take place on Sunday September 8th in front of the Wienery during the Imagine Cedarfest event.

We will see how many registrants we get. If we have enough “pure” dachsunds, we will run a separate race just for wiener dogs. Otherwise, we will group dogs by size to try to keep things fair. We may also choose to run multiple heats.

Register for the race here.

New Event Request Form

submitted by obeys@augsburg.edu

University Events has been working hard to launch a new request form for all events and meeting reservations. So that all requests can be saved in the same place, it is essential that faculty and staff use this form to submit all requests regardless of whether your event is basic or more complicated. Please note that if your event requires any special set up, catering, AV requests, etc. we require at least 15 business days (but more time is strongly recommended to ensure your event is a success). The new form, as well as all resources for planning your event, can be found at https://sites.augsburg.edu/events/

If you have trouble submitting the form, please screenshot the issue and email it to events@augsburg.edu so that we can look into fixing the issue.
