Thursday: Zen Buddhist Insights for Self-Awareness, Mental Health, and Wellness

submitted by truesmit@augsburg.edu

Join Interfaith at Augsburg for the next Interfaith Forum, a presentation and discussion with Busshō Lahn.

The benefits of meditative practices have been intuited for millennia, but now science has clearly observed the connection between mental wellness and curious self-awareness. The practice of mindfulness is now mainstream, and we’re beginning to ask deeper questions about what it really is, and about what it might be able to show us: What is the relationship between our mental health and our spirituality? What do words like compassion and wisdom mean for me in this age of anxiety? How are qualities like resiliency, courage, clarity, and kindness made available to us? In this program, Busshō Lahn draws upon insights from the Zen Buddhist tradition to address possible approaches to these questions based on his new book, Singing and Dancing Are the Voice of the Law (2022). http://listprod.stthomas.edu/t/550460/25509606/50076/15/?575396a8=MjAyM19GYWxsX1ByZXZpZXcgOS8yLzIwMjMgMToxMTo0OCBQTQ%3d%3d&x=817b1a38.

What do you like about AugSem currently? What do you dislike?
What works and what doesn’t?
In what ways does AugSem serve our current students? How does it not?
Can we use AugSem to invite our students into learning? What would that look like?
What could AugSem be? Dream big, dream small.

If none of the times listed above will work, or if you just prefer to write all your ideas out in an email in the middle of the night, you can email Kristen at chamberk@augsburg.edu OR we can set up a different time to grab coffee (or tea) and talk.

Pause on University Events Requests

submitted by rjohn@augsburg.edu

Due to multiple vacancies in University Events staff positions, we need to pause on booking events that require event planning assistance. The University Events office can still book campus meeting rooms, coordinate basic room set up, and book audio/visual support, but larger, more involved events cannot be fully supported by the department for the foreseeable future.

We have updated the University Events website to reflect this change. (See link below.) Please note: If you have bookmarked any links to the former event request pages or forms, please do not continue to use those links. Submissions to prior forms are not being monitored.

Thank you to the members of the President’s Leadership Team, the President’s Office, the Provost’s Office, and the deans and vice presidents who have been working with Meghan Gess, director of University Events, and me, to navigate this transition. We apologize for the inconvenience this scenario has caused, and appreciate the partnership across campus to ensure we do not take on more events than we can adequately support.
