Do you want to know more about Alternative Spring Break? This week Pastor John and Pastoral Intern D.J. will be tabling in Christensen Center Tuesday through Friday after chapel (Tuesday and Thursday from 12:00 – 1:30 pm and Wednesday and Friday from 11:00 am – 12:30 pm). Stop by for more information!
Since 2006, students from Augsburg University have dedicated their spring breaks to serving others in communities all over the country. Each year, a group led by a team of Augsburg students and staff partner with a local organization to serve the community.
Augsburg students have the opportunity to spend their spring break in Nashville, Tennessee, March (9th-16th), serving the community with a variety of local organizations This trip is sponsored by Campus Ministry and is available to all Augsburg students as an Augsburg Experience.

Bring $100 registration fee and copy of health insurance card to Janice Dames in Campus Ministry Office, 104 Foss

Dates of Trip: March 9-16, 2024
Destination: Nashville, Tennessee
Cost: $275, includes most lodging, transportation, and most meals. Please register by February 17, 2023. Please let us know if the cost presents a barrier to participation for you.

CLASS and Lindell Library invite you to a book discussion for “Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the 21st Century” edited by Alice Wong. “This anthology gives a glimpse into the rich complexity of the disabled experience, highlighting the passions, talents, and everyday lives of this community.”
We’ll discuss narratives from Part 3: “Doing” on Tuesday, January 30, 4:00-5:00 pm in Lindell Library, Room 301. We welcome you (students, faculty, and staff) to this discussion regardless of how much of the book you read! Faculty/Staff can apply this event toward Good/Advanced standing for the Diversity & Inclusion Certificate.

Rachel Farris in Chapel on January 23 for Uncovering Vocation

Please join us on January 23 in Hoversten Chapel at 11:30 am to hear Rachel Farris reflect on “Trying Softer” as part of the “Uncovering Vocation” series in chapel co-sponsored by the Christensen Center for Vocation. Rachel Farris is director of public relations and internal communication for Augsburg University and Luther Seminary. Before joining Augsburg in 2022, she worked in communications at the University of Minnesota and the University of Michigan, as well as in various roles in the nonprofit sector. She is a graduate of Macalester College and the University of Chicago, an ordained Presbyterian elder, a 6 on the enneagram, and a lifelong fan of the Michigan Wolverines (who, incidentally, recently won the national college football championship).

You are invited to the 7th Fosdick Lecture on Preaching where Rev. Barbara Lundblad will address the topic “Shall the Christian Nationalists Win?” Join us at 10:00 am in Hoversten Chapel (livestream is also available). One of Harry Emerson Fosdick’s most well-known sermons is “Shall the Fundamentalists Win?” He preached that sermon in 1922: would he preach it today? Would we? What are the loudest Christian voices in the United States? Let’s reclaim our voices for the sake of the Gospel!

Barbara Lundblad is the Joe R. Engle Professor of Preaching Emerita at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. She received a B.A. in English from Augustana College, an M.Div. from Yale Divinity School, and a D.D. from Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago. She is an ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and served 17 years as a parish pastor in New York City. She has been a campus pastor at Lehman College and New York University and has taught homiletics at several schools, including Yale Divinity School, Princeton Theological Seminary, Hebrew Union College, and in the D.Min. program of the Association of Chicago Theological Schools. She also served as president of the Academy of Homiletics and in 2014 the Academy honored her with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

She is the author of two books, Transforming the Stone: Preaching through Resistance to Change (2001) and Marking Time: Preaching Biblical Stories in Present Tense (2007) which grew out of the Beecher Lectures she delivered at Yale Divinity School. In 2010 she received the YDS Alumni Award for Excellence in Theological Education. She is currently the editor of “Preaching Helps,” a regular feature of the journal Currents in Theology and Mission.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is hosting 5 weeks of summer speech and debate camps in 2024. Camps will be held on-campus and include lunch in the Augsburg cafeteria. After-care is available for middle school students for an additional fee.

Camps include Policy Debate, Public Forum, Congressional Debate, Lincoln Douglas Debate, and Speech. Whether your student has debate experience or not, we’ve got a camp for all levels, from true beginners to intermediate to advanced!

Generous scholarships are available for those with financial need. Payment plans are also an option. You can register and claim your spot with a $5 deposit while applying for scholarships!

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University that provides academic competitive debate programming. This summer, we’re hosting our annual Summer Speech & Debate Camp. The camp is hosted on Augsburg University’s campus, is now open for registration!

We have camps ranging from 3 days to 3 weeks in all types of forensics, from policy debate to speech. These labs are divided by level of experience, so we have camps that are suitable for total beginners, intermediate, and advanced students!

Middle school and high school students are welcome to join us for 5 weeks of fun, learning, and growth this summer. These are day camps that are hosted on Augsburg University’s campus. Lunch in Augsburg’s cafeteria is provided with tuition.

Please note that you need to register with a $5 deposit to apply for scholarships. The priority deadline is April 21st, and we have multiple ways to help keep camp affordable for you and your family. We have grants of up to $1,000 to cover camp tuition depending on income level. We also have other supplementary scholarships and payment plans. We’ll work with you to help your students attend camp- just reach out to nestrada@augsburg.edu!

The training, entitled Understanding and Using Cultural Intelligence, will allow participants to revisit the previous annual anti-racism trainings and introduce connections to Cultural Intelligence (CQ) to practically fight oppression and its many tenets in a university setting. CQ will be used to help participants better connect with themselves and others while examining oppressive behaviors, assumptions, and mindsets.

TODAY: Last Greenhouse First Thursday of the Semester

The Augsburg Biology Department’s rooftop greenhouse grows an appreciation for and deeper understanding of the plants of our planet. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Thursday of every month during the semester, from noon to 3pm. The Augsburg community is invited to come see what we’ve got growing on, enjoy the tropical atmosphere and marvel at hundreds of plant species from all over the world.

The last First Thursday of the Fall 2023 semester is today, December 7, noon—3pm. The greenhouse is located on the 4th floor of the Hagfors Center.

Join AMRA and NACDI as we welcome a panel discussion on water rights, activism and advocacy through Native perspectives. Hear what local Native organizers and organizations are doing to forge the movement on water rights and rethink our relationship to water. There will also be opportunities for questions and ways to get involved locally and nationally.

This event is part of programming for Aabijijiwan / Ukeyat yanalleh, a collaborative exhibition reflecting on the Misi-ziibi (Big River, Ojibwe) by artists Karen Goulet (White Earth Ojibwe) and Monique Verdin (Houma), currently on view through January 13, 2024.

Join us for an evening of education, engagement and art moderated by water protector Tara Widner, with panelists Shelley Buck, Gabby Menomin, and Maggie Lorenz. There will be light snacks at 5:30 pm with the discussion starting at 6 pm.

The training, entitled Understanding and Using Cultural Intelligence, will allow participants to revisit the previous annual anti-racism trainings and introduce connections to Cultural Intelligence (CQ) to practically fight oppression and its many tenets in a university setting. The greenhouse is open to the Augsburg campus community on the first Thursday of every month during the semester, from noon to 3pm. The Augsburg community is invited to come see what we’ve got growing on, enjoy the tropical atmosphere and marvel at hundreds of plant species from all over the world.
