Last fall the Library implemented a new service known as an institutional repository, designed to publicize and disseminate faculty and student scholarship to a global audience. Augsburg’s repository, known as Idun, went live in August 2017 with three initial collections: 1) faculty-authored articles, 2) faculty-authored books, and 3) theses and dissertations.
Idun includes a readership map which displays a real-time view of which publications are being downloaded, how frequently, and the country or countries in which each publication is downloaded.
While we were all busy with fall classes or relaxing over the holidays, Idun was hard at work. In just a few short months, faculty and student publications have been downloaded well over 300 times by readers across the United States and in 27 foreign countries on 5 continents. These early results demonstrate the promise of Idun, but realizing its full potential depends on the broadest possible participation of Auggie scholars. Ann Johnson, Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement at the University of St. Thomas, and

LearningWorks at Blake: A Breakthrough Program is one of 24 sites of the Breakthrough Collaborative. We are located in Minneapolis, MN and have a dual mission: to offer a challenging academic enrichment program to a representative group of highly motivated, high potential middle school students from Minneapolis Public Schools, setting them on the path to college by preparing them to enter rigorous high school programs; and to draw talented high school and college students into the education field by engaging them in the art of teaching.
As a part of our LearningWorks PAID internship, summer teaching fellows design and teach original 6-week academic and elective courses to our middle school students. Our teachers receive support from our Curriculum & Instruction Director and licensed teachers, referred to during the summer as Mentor Teachers. In addition to developing curriculum and teaching, our teaching fellows serve as advisors and committee members. Our summer teaching fellows can expect a rigorous, community-centered, engaging environment where they have the opportunity to support amazing middle school students on their paths to college!

STILL LIFE WITH HORSES by Jean Harper is on Small Press Distribution’s bestseller’s list. This memoir was published in November 2017 by Howling Bird Press, the student-run literary press of Augsburg’s MFA in Creative Writing program.

The latest computer vulnerabilities, being called Meltdown and Spectre, relate to how the CPU (brain) of computers operates. The major software vendors are releasing patches to their software (Windows, MacOS, linux) to deal with the vulnerabilities.
We are updating servers as the updates are made available by vendors. We may have to schedule some off-hours downtime for major services to complete the patching.
For institutional PCs we’ll be pushing out updates once they are available. For Macs those will be pushed by Apple through the App Store under the Apple Menu. On your personal computers be sure to run your system updates.
Early news reports suggest computers may become slower after the patching though whether that will be noticeable will likely depend on how old the computer is.
We’ll be monitoring this as it continues to unfold.

Augsburg University and Midcontinent Communications (Midco) have recently formed a partnership which will provide opportunities for underrepresented students to earn a scholarship, explore a career in business/IT, and gain relevant work experience.
This semester, up to 4 students will be selected for the honor of becoming the first cohort of Midco Scholars. Each Scholar will have a $2,500 scholarship applied to their student account and will also have the opportunity to apply for a full-time Summer 2018 internship with Midco either in their Sioux Falls, SD or Edina, MN offices. (Internships will more likely take place in Sioux Falls, so applicants should be available to live in Sioux Falls for the summer – housing is available).
Ideal candidates for the Midco Scholars Program will:
-Be a Junior in good standing at Augsburg (anticipated graduation in Dec 2018 or May 2019)
-Have a major or minor in MIS, Computer Science, Mathematics, Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Data Analytics or other business related fields
-Be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of a summer internship and provide documents to verify work authorization
Underrepresented students, including students of color, low-income (Pell Grant eligible/Dream Grant eligible), and/or first generation college students are highly encouraged to apply.

Stop by the Biology Dept Home in Hagfors 232 on Friday, Jan 12th from 2-4PM for cookies, berries, coffee and conversation. Meet the Biology Department’s newest faculty member, Dr. Leon van Eck. Leon comes to us with broad training in plant biology and plant-pest interactions. His specific area of interest is in the Rosaceae family which includes many edible fruits such as strawberries and raspberries, as well as roses.

Study abroad for two weeks in summer 2018:
INTERFAITH ENGAGEMENT IN PALESTINE AND ISRAEL
Courses: RLN 205 or RLN 490. This program also fulfills Augsburg Experience
Join this two-week course to gain a transformational learning experience. You will be immersed in the Israeli and Palestinian contexts, particularly focusing on the three Abrahamic faiths – Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Through lectures, readings, and conversations you will deepen your understanding of the history, sacred texts, beliefs and practices of the three Abrahamic faiths. Particular attention will be given to the roots of conflicts in the region and to peacebuilding movements.
We will visit holy sites that are at the center of the sacred stories that shape the beliefs and practices of Jews, Christians, and Muslims. We will hear how faith shapes the daily lives of those living in the land often called “holy.”

MUSIC THERAPY IN CHINA: CHONGQING BURN CAMP
Course options:
-MUS 374, -MUS 474, or MUS 582. It also fulfills Augsburg Experience
Music therapists benefit greatly from exploring the evolution of music from one generation to the next, the way in which music is integrated into everyday life, and its role in health, healing, and well-being in China. Through visits to hospitals, clinics, musical venues, conservatories, and community organizations that provide health related care, students experience the interplay of music and healing practices in China. Students also engage in direct dialogue with Chinese music therapists and other rehabilitation therapists. The program allows participants to reflect on their own musical roots, and to discover how their own musical preferences have developed based on cultural experiences. We will also visit other locations of interest such as The Great Wall, Old-Town Beijing, Dazu Rock Carvings, Yangtze River Cruise and more.

This advertising campaign complements other, program-specific advertising designed to generate leads by encouraging prospective students to request more information about the university.

The first phase of implementing our Policy on Bottled Water, approved in May 2017, was to eliminate bottled water from on-campus catering (Thanks, A’Viands!). We are now on to the next phase in implementing this initiative – no longer using Augsburg funds to purchase individual bottles/cases of water: Augsburg will use already available local tap water and eliminate the sale, reimbursement, and provision of bottled water on campus. This policy aims to reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions, and supports the provision of water as a human right and not a commodity.
Beginning February 1, 2018, Augsburg will no longer use or reimburse University funds for purchases of bottled water for on-campus use (except for athletic events). You may have been purchasing bottled water in the following ways:

P-Cards
Staples
Petty Cash
Invoices
Watch for the retrofit of drinking fountains to include water filling stations in various spots on campus!
If you have questions or would like support finding alternatives to bottled water for your department, feel free to contact the Environmental Stewardship Committee: environmentalstewardship@augsburg.edu. We are happy to help brainstorm ideas as we move towards loving our local water! And please share your own creative solutions so we can celebrate together!

Students can now apply for the 2017-18 NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship Program at Augsburg College. This scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.
This competitive program awards 6 scholarships for spring semester, 2018, in the following areas:
**Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Junior). Four scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
**Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior). Two scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…
-are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;
-can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within their major area; and
-show an interest in contributing to NASA’s mission.
Please note that students from traditionally underrepresented groups in science and mathematics fields are especially encouraged to apply. No applicant shall be denied consideration based on race, creed, color, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, or ability.

Augsburg’s LSAMP NSS program is designed to help STEM students succeed through peer mentoring, workshops, research opportunities, industry visits, and conference travel. LSAMP NSS funding opportunities include:
-Professional development stipends (up to $500) for participation in LSAMP NSS programming
-Travel funding for professional STEM conferences (including airfare and lodging)
-Academic year or summer research funding (contingent on mentor match)
STEM majors at Augsburg: biology, biopsychology, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, mathematics, physics
LSAMP NSS eligibility:
-Full-time student pursuing a STEM major.
-US citizen or permanent resident.

If you are selected to interview at a particular time/day, we will notify you several days before the scheduled interview. At that time, we will also send you a link to a brief training video (15 minutes), and ask that you review this before you conduct the interview.

This scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.
This competitive program awards 6 scholarships for spring semester, 2018, in the following areas:
**Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Junior). Four scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
**Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior). Two scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…
-are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;

The John Engman Writing Prize, a literary competition sponsored by Murphy Square and the Augsburg English Department, is awarded each year to promising writers. This year’s submission deadline has been extended to December 31st. Judges of the competition will select winners in each of the categories of fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction.
To enter writers must submit the following:
Short Fiction – One complete short story of not more than 15 pages.
Creative Non-fiction – One complete piece not longer than 15 pages.
Poetry – At least three poems.
All writers must be enrolled at Augsburg University and may enter each of the categories as often as they wish, but they may only win in one. Names of writers must not be on the works submitted.
Entries must be submitted through Moodle.

The prize was named in honor of poet and Augsburg alumnus John Engman who died in 1996. Judges for the contest are English Department faculty members. Winners will be notified in January and will be awarded gift cards to the university bookstore.

Our cafe has been shut down and we have students living in the dorms who rely on meal plans to eat. If you are looking for a way to help please consider bringing in some food to sustain them so they don’t have to worry about how they are eating today. There are students who are stranded here with no way of supporting or feeding themselves.
We have approximately 117 students living in the dorms at the Lowry building. They are also in need of boxes because they are being asked to move out.
They could really use some community support.
If you or someone you know has boxes, bins, or food to donate to students, please drop them off at the Residence Hall at 345 Wabasha St. N. Saint Paul, MN 55102 (Sign on the building says Gray Duck)
Call our RA duty phone at 651-324-1609 when you arrive and we’ll meet you in the lobby with a cart to grab any boxes you may have!
You can apparently also have food delivered to the commons in the secure area of McNally. Looks like people have been donating pizzas and whatnot.

Late Night Breakfast was Mon., Dec. 18, and servers included President Pribbenow, Dianne Detloff, Marc Isaacson, Fardosa Hassan, Matt Maruggi, Francesca Chiari, and Craig Schleisman. The cheese omelet team was Carol Enke and Bridget Robinson-Riegler, and Sarah Griesse and Eric Pegues greeted, along with Residence Life staff Anthony Wilder, Gayle Smaller and Seth Reuter.

The Sesquicentennial Academic Sub-Committee is looking for project ideas and project leaders that will make the celebration of our Sesquicentennial year a special year for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of Augsburg. Funds are available for evocative projects of all kinds that reflect Augsburg’s mission, academic excellence and community. The 150th anniversary will be celebrated between Homecoming 2019 and Homecoming 2020. Our aim is to have all Sesquicentennial projects identified by Spring 2018.

Study abroad for two weeks in summer 2018:
INTERFAITH ENGAGEMENT IN PALESTINE AND ISRAEL
Courses: RLN 205 or RLN 490. This program also fulfills Augsburg Experience
Join this two-week course to gain a transformational learning experience. You will be immersed in the Israeli and Palestinian contexts, particularly focusing on the three Abrahamic faiths – Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Through lectures, readings, and conversations you will deepen your understanding of the history, sacred texts, beliefs and practices of the three Abrahamic faiths. Particular attention will be given to the roots of conflicts in the region and to peacebuilding movements.
We will visit holy sites that are at the center of the sacred stories that shape the beliefs and practices of Jews, Christians, and Muslims. We will hear how faith shapes the daily lives of those living in the land often called “holy.”

This scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.
This competitive program awards 6 scholarships for spring semester, 2018, in the following areas:
**Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Junior). Four scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
**Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior). Two scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is holding its 44th annual convention March 21-25, 2018 in Pittsburgh, PA. NSBE’s mission is “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.” (www.nsbe.org) Students who have attended in past years have found the conference to be an excellent professional development opportunity.
Augsburg students who are eligible for funding through LSAMP NSS may apply for travel funding to attend the NSBE convention. THE DARK SIDE OF THE HAPPY CITY IN DENMARK & ICELAND
Courses: ENL 270 or ENL 395, AND SOC 111/URB 111, or SOC 295/URB 295 The program also fulfills Augsburg Experience
In this program, students will have the opportunity to learn about two amazing cities: Reykjavik and Copenhagen and earn 8 credits at the same time! This two-course Augsburg Abroad experience explores the relationship between city and text; it is an interdisciplinary celebration of cities, with Reykjavik and Copenhagen and their environs as the sites of the celebration. Students will access the artistic heart of the city by immersing themselves in the real-life locations of Hamlet, Copenhagen Noir, and major films. Simultaneously, they will tour Copenhagen (often via bike and public transport) to learn why it is a mecca of urban sustainability and livability with some of the most inspired public spaces in the world. The program will also include a one-night stopover in Iceland, where students can explore Icelandic community life, explore its Viking history and storytelling (sagas).

Devon Ross is the new director of undergraduate admissions at Augsburg University, and Shonna Fulford has been elevated to the Associate Director role, overseeing traditional undergraduate recruitment in admissions.
As a student athlete (soccer) at Augsburg, Devon worked in housing (while living in Mort) and also career services. College access became his calling when he began a career in admissions in 1993. He has several years of experience with each of our undergraduate populations; traditional, transfer, and adult.
A 2017 recipient of the Outstanding Staff Award at Augsburg, Devon has played a large role in several major initiatives that have helped transform Augsburg into a more diverse, thriving, urban university.
He serves as the Chair of Admissions Practices for the MN Association for College Admission Counseling (MACAC) and also for the MACAC Leadership Development Program as a mentor to new admissions professionals.
Additionally, he’s also part of the National College Fair organizing committee.
While he’s a busy father of five, wrapping up his Master of Arts in Leadership at Augsburg, Devon and his wife, Gina, also provide animal-foster housing for cats and dogs in their south-metro home.
Shonna Fulford has been promoted to the role of Associate Director of Traditional Undergraduate Admissions. Shonna hails originally from the vibrant, rural community of Perham, MN. A graduate of Augsburg in 2009, she continued on to earn her MS in Leadership in Higher Education from Capella University.
One of our most successful admissions counselors in her five years in admissions, Shonna will continue to manage a significant recruiting territory and serve on Staff Senate, having been elected in 2017.
Shonna has also served on the MACAC government relations committee and currently serves on the executive board of the MN Association of Counselors of Color.

Earn language, Art, Keystone, or Internship credit in Mexico this summer:
AUGSBURG CGEE IN MEXICO: LANGUAGE AND CULTURE IN MEXICO
CGEE in Mexico offers five 3 1/2 week sessions (blocks) focusing on Spanish language and Mexican culture in which students can take one course per session, and take up to five courses throughout the summer. This community-based program includes homestays, a trip to Mexico City, optional weekend excursions, and numerous guest speakers designed to help students learn about history, culture, and contemporary struggles for peace, justice, and human rights.
Spanish language courses at all levels beginning to advanced, as well as specialized Spanish courses in Business Spanish, Spanish for Ministry, and Spanish for Healthcare Professionals can be combined with internships in those fields to create a truly customized summer experience.
2018 PROGRAM DATES
The summer is organized into five blocks, you may take anywhere from one to five blocks. Students who wish to take an internship must enroll for at least two blocks:
Block I: May 2-27
Block II: May 23-June 17 (KEY 490 offered only during Block II)
Block III: June 13-July 8
Block IV: July 5-29
Block V: July 25-August 19

The Music Theatre Club’s spring musical, The Drowsy Chaperone, is a fully student run production with the purpose of bringing new and additional performance or production opportunities to all Augsburg students. If you are interested in auditioning for a role in The Drowsy Chaperone, there is a two-day audition process for which you must sign-up and attend.
***Audition sign-ups are located on the door if the Sateren Auditorium on the main floor of Anderson Music Hall.***
Friday, December 15th (Song/Monologue Audition- Day 1)
Sign up for an audition slot between 6pm-9pm.
For the audition, please prepare the following:
1. 60 Second Monologue: Perform a monologue of your choice that is upwards of one minute in length. Memorization is not required but recommended.
2. 32 Bars of a Musical Theatre Song: Perform up to 32 bars (ex. a verse and a chorus) of a song of your choosing. You MAY choose to perform an excerpt of a song from The Drowsy Chaperone. Memorization is not required but recommended. Please bring a copy of sheet music for the accompanist.

The John Engman Writing Prize, a literary competition sponsored by Murphy Square and the Augsburg English Department, is awarded each year to promising writers. This year’s submission deadline is December 21st (the last day of finals). Judges of the competition will select winners in each of the categories of fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction.
To enter writers must submit the following:
Short Fiction – One complete short story of not more than 15 pages.
Creative Non-fiction – One complete piece not longer than 15 pages.
Poetry – At least three poems.
All writers must be enrolled at Augsburg University and may enter each of the categories as often as they wish, but they may only win in one. Names of writers must not be on the works submitted.
Entries must be submitted through Moodle.

The prize was named in honor of poet and Augsburg alumnus John Engman who died in 1996. Judges for the contest are English Department faculty members. The Sesquicentennial Academic Sub-Committee is looking for project ideas and project leaders that will make the celebration of our Sesquicentennial year a special year for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of Augsburg. Funds are available for evocative projects of all kinds that reflect Augsburg’s mission, academic excellence and community. The 150th anniversary will be celebrated between Homecoming 2019 and Homecoming 2020. Our aim is to have all Sesquicentennial projects identified by Spring 2018.
Submission Instructions:
Please submit all completed applications through the Google form (https://goo.gl/forms/VW53VqWyuJSV5xMc2). Applications are due April 15, 2018 for consideration.

Looking for students, faculty and staff to read to 2nd and 3rd graders on Tuesdays starting January 9th at the Cedar Riverside Community School from 9:30am-10:30am. You don’t have to commit to going every week. The last Tuesday of the month Barnes and Noble will be hosting the kids here on campus in our bookstore. A Google calendar will be created for those who want to sign up. More info to come.

Students can now apply for the 2017-18 NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholarship Program at Augsburg College. This scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.
This competitive program awards 6 scholarships for spring semester, 2018, in the following areas:
**Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Junior). Four scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
**Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior). Two scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…
-are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;
-can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within their major area; and
-show an interest in contributing to NASA’s mission.
Please note that students from traditionally underrepresented groups in science and mathematics fields are especially encouraged to apply. No applicant shall be denied consideration based on race, creed, color, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, or ability.
