Start submitting Tuition Benefit Applications

Reminder to Benefits-Eligible Faculty and Staff:

The tuition benefit program is a wonderful benefit for those working at Augsburg University. If you are interested in applying for this benefit for Summer 2018, Fall 2018 or Spring 2019 courses, please remember to submit the tuition benefit application. The application deadline is May 1st, but the earlier applications are submitted, the better your chances for being awarded tuition benefit at partnering institutions.

Forms should be returned and submitted to HR, Memorial Hall, Room 19. (Forms are available for pick-up in the HR office, and at the following link: http://web.augsburg.edu/hr/Tuition_Benefit_Application_Form.pdf)

Campus Cupboard Updated Hours

Hello everyone!
Campus Cupboard hours have been extended thanks to our wonderful volunteers. Here are the new hours starting the week of Oct 9th:
M- 8am-9am, 9:30am-6pm
T- 8am-9am, 2pm-6pm
W- 8am-9:15am, 9:30am-3pm
Th- 8am-9:30am, 10am- 1pm, 4pm-5pm
F- 8am-9:15am, 10am-1:30pm

I am still looking for volunteers to fill these shifts: Tuesdays between 9am-2pm, Wednesdays 3pm-6pm, Thursdays 1pm-4pm and 5pm-6pm, and Fridays 1:30pm-6pm. Volunteers can volunteer for as short as an hour or longer if they’d like. Volunteer shifts are a weekly commitment as we would like to keep the Cupboard open consistently. If you’re interested in learning more or would like to volunteer, donate items to the Cupboard, or have any questions, please email me! nguyenj@augsburg.edu

Campus Cupboard is Augsburg’s food shelf located in the Foss lobby. We are open to all students and encourage students to utilize the Cupboard if they are experiencing food insecurity. Come check us out!

Interview prospective students for Honors

The Honors Program once again needs interviewers for honors scholarship candidates. Interviews will begin October 23 and run through February 3, Monday through Friday, whenever classes are in session. Go to the Honors Interview Scheduling form to sign up.

If you are selected to interview at a particular time/day, we will notify you several days before the scheduled interview. At that time, we will also send you a link to a brief training video (15 minutes), and ask that you review this before you conduct the interview.

Even doing one interview helps tremendously. Thank you for doing your part to recruit great students to the Honors Program and the University.

Food Service Extended Hours Pilot Update

As we analyzed the numbers of customers dining from 7-8 PM during the month of September, we have concluded that we will not be able to continue with the extended dinner hour. We will return to the normal 7 PM Commons closing time effective Monday, October 9.

The other hours changes made at the beginning of Fall semester have been very successful, so we will continue to open at 7 AM Monday-Friday, and extend hot food lunch until 2 PM Monday-Friday. Please let Daniel Meyer (dmeyer@aviands.com) know if you have any questions or suggestions in the future.

Judge Debate for Minnesota Urban Debate League

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is searching for debate judges for 6 high school debate tournaments this fall. Judges will watch high school debate rounds and evaluate teams on logic, effective argumentation, and speaking skills. The judge picks a winner, assigns speaking points to individual students, and provides written feedback on their decision. No experience? No worries. We will train you. Judges will also enjoy free pizza at this great service learning opportunity!

The core debate tournaments will happen at these dates and locations:

October 6-7th: U of M (East Bank)
October 14th: Season Opener (St. Paul)
October 27th-28th: Rosebowl (Roseville)

Pork Free Pizza

Pizza in the Commons will continue to be offered with a variety of toppings, but pork toppings have been discontinued. This eliminates the risk of cross-contamination of utensils for the Commons customers who choose not to eat pork.

Extended Hours
Because you asked for it, the Commons will be open earlier for breakfast, hot lunch served longer, and dinner served later.
The Commons is open from 7:00 a.m.-8 p.m.
Breakfast: 7:00-9:45 a.m.
Continental Breakfast: 9:45-11 a.m.
Lunch: 11 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
Light Lunch: 2:00-4:30 p.m.
Dinner: 4:30-8 p.m.
Note that the 8 p.m. closing time is a one-month pilot program for the month of September. If dining from 7-8 p.m. proves to be a popular option, we will be able to stay open until 8 p.m. on a permanent basis.

Welcome to Angela Bonfiglio – International Student Advisor in ISSS

Please join me in welcoming Angela Bonfiglio to Augsburg. Angela is our new International Student Advisor/DSO working in ISSS. Angela previously worked at Redeemer Center for Life and Redeemer Lutheran Church with youth in the community in a variety of programs focused on mentoring, leadership and equity. She is a 2013 alumni of Augsburg, was a leader on campus and passionate about being involved in the community and justice work. She also studied at CGEE-Namibia in 2012. Fall Blood Drive Hits 107% of Goal!

Auggies came through at the annual Fall blood drive on Monday with 107% of goal achieved – 45 units of blood collected and 103 lives saved!! Thank you so much to all of you who were able to donate especially at a critical time of need for blood donations. Thank you also to those of you who turned in your FREE Crayola Experience tickets at Mall of America. They will be given to a local community group to use. If you were not able to donate, the spring blood drive is scheduled for Wednesday 3/28/18 from 10 – 4 pm. Thank you again!

Beware of “Toner Phoners”

There are several unscrupulous businesses out there who attempt to sell you outrageously priced toner over the phone. We have already gotten a call from someone (mis)representing themselves as our vendor – Marco, and referencing our new fleet of Sharp copiers. They may start with asking you what is the model or ID# of the copier near your desk. They may say they have extra stock of the toner you need or the price is due to increase. They may offer to ship you a toner on trial. Regardless of what they say, don’t give them any information. All you need to know is that you get toner for your copier or printer by calling the Copy Center at extension 1054. You will never need to purchase toner for machines in your area. A quick way to ditch these “toner phoners” is to tell them you would like to transfer them to the person in the organization who purchases toner – they will hang up before you can transfer them!

Hello people of Augsburg! Campus Cupboard is now open for ALL students.
Hours are as follows:

If you need groceries, please stop by the Cupboard in the Foss Lobby. Students can take up to 5 items per visit at no cost. We have lots of soups, canned veggies and fruits, dried goods like beans and rice, and a lot of other foods!

Please share with friends and spread the news about the Cupboard. We are aiming to end the stigma around using food shelves and food insecurity on campus.

Earthquake Relief for Mexican Host Families

On behalf of CGEE Mexico staff and Mexico Site Director Ann Lutterman-Aguilar, please consider donating to our earthquake relief campaign.

As many of you know, Augsburg has had presence in Cuernavaca, Mexico for over 35 years. Many Augsburg students along with other college students, non-profit organizations, businesses and others, have participated in our life changing programs year after year. Each experience had by our participants includes short stays with host families in the region. These families have expressed generosity, love, and support in hosting students throughout the years.

Many of our host families in the rural parts of Morelos were hit hard by the September 19th earthquake. These families and communities have lost homes in the devastation and are working to rebuild their lives.

Please consider donating to Ann’s campaign to help raise money for these families and communities in need. Even a simple $10 donation or a “share” on a facebook page can go a long way to helping those communities in need that have been so kind and generous with our students over the years.

“In the Antimilitarist Feminist Network, she learned about working class feminism and discovered the need to collectively build forms of life that invite the transformation of the living conditions of those who have suffered war, hunger, dehumanization, lack of education, work, and health. Changing imagery, denaturalizing war and violence, working towards peace and building women’s power.

Carol Rojas is a popular educator who accompanies formative processes with men and women who live in working class neighborhoods. Her primary objective is to demilitarize and undo the patriarchy that exists in peoples’ bodies and minds so that they can transform their territories based on an antimilitarist working class feminism and the commitment towards the democratization of the Colombian state, which is a key idea for the construction of peace.”

Take your winter break to a new level – study abroad!

The winter break program, From Harry Potter to #Brexit: Youth Culture and Social Change in the UK, will examine the connections among popular culture, politics, and youth activism in 20th and 21st century Britain. Travel to the UK from December 28 to January 7!

The course, WST 220, is 4-credits and can fulfill a Humanities credit, or a requirement for WST majors/minors or for Youth Studies minors. This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement.

Undocumented Students Webinar

Undocumented Students Series

This one hour webinar focuses on what the legal aspects of admitting and supporting undocumented students are. Chad Teman will be your presenter for this ‘Hot Topic’ in higher education. Chad has presented on this topic for several years and continues to be a sought after expert in this field. He will look at what the state and federal government is doing to work with these students. We will examine some case studies on how some states are handling this issue. He will also provide advice on how to work with these students now. We will also discuss how to offer a safe space for these students. Our goal will be to teach you how to maximize the service you provide to these students.
A question and answer session will be included after this webinar to clear up any questions institutions would have regarding this topic.

The course, WST 220, is 4-credits and can fulfill a Humanities credit, or a requirement for WST majors/minors or for Youth Studies minors. This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement.

Deadline of Oct. 1 for Metro Transit College Pass deal

The deadline for new Augsburg day program first-years and transfer students to get the College Pass deal is October 1.

1. Metro Transit will sell College Pass Semester Cards for all new first year and transfer students at $90 for fall semester that expires December 31, 2017
2. New students also have the option to purchase a FULL YEAR card at $150 that would cover fall and spring semesters and expires June 1, 2018.

Congratulations Dianne Detloff

Dianne Detloff received the College Partner of the Year Award from the Memorial Blood Centers for the second year in a row. Once again, Dianne has gone “above and beyond.”

The award was presented to her at the annual appreciation breakfast hosted by the Memorial Blood Centers, and Tim McNiff of KARE 11 was the emcee. She is being recognized for exemplary service organizing the Annual Blood Drive at Augsburg University and for being a model college/university partner. The Blood Drive at Augsburg provides the entire Auggie community the opportunity to be of service to the larger community and to help save lives.

Free Pacifica Premium app — mindfulness and mental health

Augsburg students, staff and faculty are now eligible to download a free premium version of the Pacifica app (a $34 value). Pacifica is a mindfulness and mental health app (for your smartphone or computer) that provides a set of tools for daily use based on cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and wellness, designed to be done at your own pace. Using Pacifica’s tools, you can do things like check in with your mood, examine your thoughts, track your health habits, or complete a relaxation activity. Simply download Pacifica from the App Store or Google Play Store. Use your Augsburg email address to sign up and click the link in the confirmation email, and you’ll get access to Pacifica Premium for free. Pacifica is teaming up with the Center for Wellness & Counseling to make this app available free to the Augsburg community this year (free subscription will expire August 2018; you do not need to enter any credit card information to sign up as there will be no financial cost involved and no automatic renewal). October is Cyber Security Month – New Tool Being Added to Google Drive

October is Cyber Security Month. Come to an information session to hear briefly what the current cyber threats are, learn some tips that apply at work or home, share your experiences and strategies.

Also this winter IT is adding new tool to Google Drive to protect regulated data. What is regulated data? Come and find out! Adding this tools means we will not dissuade you from keeping FERPA data in Google Drive in 2018. We want to you to be able to fully use Google Drive in your work.

There will also be online self-paced information security training coming for faculty and staff as part of our work on information security. Come and find out more!

Wouldn’t it be GREAT if you could get paid to do an internship?

You may be able to do just that because of a grant awarded to Augsburg University. This program serves juniors and seniors who receive financial aid, improving their odds of graduating and preparing them to enter the workforce with real-world experience in their fields of study.

To be eligible:

* Students must be in good academic standing (2.0+ GPA).

* Students must be a college junior or senior (60 credits completed) at the time of the internship. (Second semester sophomores can apply as long as they hold junior standing BEFORE the internship begins.)

* Students must be eligible for financial aid (work study). Not sure if you are eligible? Email studentfinances@augsburg.edu or check your awards package.

* The internship must be related to your major or career aspirations.

* Internships will take place Fall 2017 or Spring 2018. $12.50 per hour for up to 194 hours.

Act now! Limited space left for Fall 2017. Priority consideration is given to students who complete the short Augsburg application, so we recommend you complete it soon.

Laura Swanson Lindahl Promoted to Asst. Director of Marketing Management

I’m pleased to announce that Laura Swanson Lindahl has accepted a promotion to fill the new assistant director of marketing management position in the Office of Marketing and Communication. This position was created as part of the shared services agreement for marketing between Augsburg and Luther Seminary. As assistant director, Laura will play a role similar in some ways to what an account executive would do at a marketing agency. She will meet with our partners on both campuses to strategize about their marketing needs, convey that information back to our designers and copywriter, and manage projects for marketing deliverables.

Laura brings a host of skills and experiences to this role, which is critical for the success of the shared services model. Her experience interacting with our campus partners and her ability to plan and execute complex projects with multiple contributors will serve both Luther and Augsburg exceedingly well. Her experience working on the news and media side of our division will help us to build a deeper integration between marketing and PR. Laura will continue to lead the Augsburg Now magazine in her new role, and will begin to take on Luther Story magazine going forward as well.

I hope you will join me in congratulating her on this accomplishment! A revised version of Laura’s previous position, focusing on social media, will be posted soon.

Community Service Opportunity: Judge Debates for MNUDL this Fall

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is searching for debate judges for 6 high school debate tournaments this fall. Judges will watch high school debate rounds and evaluate teams on logic, effective argumentation, and speaking skills. The judge picks a winner, assigns speaking points to individual students, and provides written feedback on their decision. No experience? No worries. We will train you. Judges will also enjoy free pizza at tournaments!

The core debate tournaments will happen at these dates and locations:

October 6-7th: U of M (East Bank)
October 14th: Season Opener (St. Paul)
October 27th-28th: Rosebowl (Roseville)
November 10th-11th: UMBrooks (U of M, West Bank)
December 8th-9th: The UDL Championship (TBD)

We are happy to have judges for any single tournament or multiple tournaments.

Take your winter break to a new level – study abroad!

The winter break program, From Harry Potter to #Brexit: Youth Culture and Social Change in the UK, will examine the connections among popular culture, politics, and youth activism in 20th and 21st century Britain. Travel to the UK from December 28 to January 7!

The course, WST 220, is 4-credits and can fulfill a Humanities credit, or a requirement for WST majors/minors or for Youth Studies minors. This program also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement.

Get Your Flu Shots, September 25

The Minnesota Visiting Nurse Association will be on campus administering flu shots in the Center for Wellness and Counseling office (first floor Anderson Res Hall) on Monday 9/25/17 from 10:30 am – 1:00 pm. Most insurances are accepted or you can pay $38 with cash or check. Please be sure to bring your insurance card if you want your insurance to be billed. Another clinic will be held Thursday 10/26 from 11:00 – 12:30 pm. Questions, please call the CWC office at 612-330-1707.

Payroll Notice For 2017-2018 Academic Year – For all Faculty, Staff and Student Workers

With the pay date of September 15th being the first payroll of the Academic Year, which can be the first paycheck for many new employees, we ask that everyone review their paystubs for accuracy.

Student Workers – Please make sure you have been paid for all reported hours. There are some known issues regarding positions, which your supervisor should have communicated, but if you feel you were not paid correctly please stop by the Payroll office, Science Hall – 148 or email payroll@augsburg.edu.

Parking – Parking deductions begin on this check for the Academic year, please review your stub and email payroll@augsburg.edu if you feel there is an error.

Tax Withholding – Please review your W-4 Tax Information in the bottom left corner of your pay stub. You can make changes to this at any time in the year. Forms are available in the Payroll office, Science Hall – 148 or visit the Administrative Accounting/Payroll webpage to print and complete a form.

Kronos Time Entry – All Student Workers should be entering their time with positions that state Work Study, if you do not have a Work Study position and/or have a position indicating Summer, please notify your supervisor as this could create payroll issues.

Commons Cafe Extended Hours

Because you asked for it, the Commons will be open earlier for breakfast, hot lunch served longer, and dinner served later.
The Commons is open from 7:00 a.m.-8 p.m.
Breakfast: 7:00 – 9:45 a.m.
Continental Breakfast: 9:45 – 11 a.m.
Lunch: 11 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Light Lunch: 2:00 – 4:30 p.m.
Dinner: 4:30 – 8 p.m.
Note that the 8 p.m. closing time is a one-month pilot program for the month of September. If dining from 7 – 8 p.m. proves to be a popular option, we will be able to stay open until 8 p.m. on a permanent basis.
