Academic Affairs Committee – Proposal Submission Update

submitted by engerj@augsburg.edu

Augsburg faculty,

I hope you all had a restful summer and are geared up for the fall semester! It’ll be an exciting year as we work to implement a number of university-wide initiatives, including our transition to the new General Education curriculum.

As Stacy Freiheit, General Education Director, communicated in a series of updates through A-mail, a subcommittee of AAC began this work over the summer, resulting in a large batch proposal to migrate the 475 courses that currently have gen ed implications to the new curriculum. The batch proposal will go to AAC for discussion and review during our first meeting on September 9th and will be the main focus of that meeting.

As a result of the general education changes as well as the change to the new 5-school structure, AAC will also need to update a number of forms and consider how to make the submission process and requirements for new proposals as clear and efficient as possible. There is also a large volume of proposals that need to be considered relating to the upcoming HLC visit.

As a result, we are asking that folks hold off on submitting new proposals to AAC until these forms and processes can be discussed and developed by the whole committee. Our goal is to have this work essentially completed by our second meeting (September 23rd) so we can then begin accepting proposals relating to the new curriculum by our third meeting on October 7th.

Until then, we ask for your patience as we try our best to set up procedures that will hopefully make the experience as painless as possible. We will provide updates as we progress through our first couple meetings, and notify faculty when new proposals can be submitted. Any questions can be emailed to aac-proposals@augsburg.edu.

Thank you,

The Academic Affairs Committee

An Opportunity to Volunteer Virtually at Your Own Pace with MNUDL

submitted by froehlic@augsburg.edu

Love to talk? Need service hours? Have a busy schedule? We’ve got you covered!

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, serves middle and high school students in the Twin Cities by providing debate programming. We’re seeking volunteers to help make audio recordings of our evidence packets this fall.

Why are we doing this? Recording evidence helps improve the accessibility of our resources for English Language Learners and students learning below grade level, who can understand the evidence faster by listening to the recording while reading along in the packet. Plus, we’ve got students who simply want to multitask while studying the evidence (they could listen to your recording while taking the bus or doing chores at home!)

We’re seeking volunteers to record some pages of evidence from the Novice packet for our fall MSHSL Debate programming. The due date is October 1st and the topic is about AI & Intellectual Property Rights.

You don’t need to be an expert public speaker or have special recording equipment. You just need to speak slowly, clearly, have access to a phone or laptop with a microphone, and follow our instructions.

If you’re interested, I’ll send you a handful of assigned pages, instructions, and the Google Drive where you should put your recording.

If you can’t make the October 1st deadline, that’s fine- we’ll also have middle school debate packets and others to record in the future.

Please fill out this form if you’re interested! https://forms.gle/fT5nT8eHxddJohzj7

Are You Crafty? Volunteer with MNUDL to Decorate Spooky and Autumnal Trophies

submitted by froehlic@augsburg.edu

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities.

At our Rosebowl Tournament, held over Halloween weekend each year, debaters compete for our decorated bowling pin trophies. We painted a record number of bowling pins last year, and the tournament keeps growing. We’re looking for volunteers with an artistic eye who want to paint spooky and creative designs on the pins this fall.

Fill out the interest form so we can schedule a decorating date! Plan for the event to take place on Augsburg University’s campus. https://forms.gle/oQ5RP8MEmMwfMyA57

(This is an all-ages volunteer event!)

Supplies will be provided. Many of the design ideas are suggested by students and executed by the staff each year, but we also would love for you to bring your own ideas as well!

New Academic Year, New Event Request Form

University Events has been working hard to launch a new request form for all events and meeting reservations. So that all requests can be saved in the same place, it is essential that faculty and staff use this form to submit all requests regardless of whether your event is basic or more complicated. Please note that if your event requires any special set up, catering, AV requests, etc. we require at least 15 business days (but more time is strongly recommended to ensure your event is a success). The new form, as well as all resources for planning your event, can be found at https://sites.augsburg.edu/events/

Student groups and organizations should submit event requests through Auggie Life.

If you have trouble submitting the form, please screenshot the issue and email it to events@augsburg.edu so that we can look into fixing the issue.

New Copy Request System

submitted by longj@augsburg.edu

The new copy request system (IOnS) is currently live. Please submit all copy request through the new system and not by email. We need all cost center orders to go through the system for billing. If your user ID was uploaded it should have your default cost center number already in the drop-down menu. If you need more than the one cost center number, change areas or are new you will need email copyctr@augsburg.edu with your User ID and what cost center numbers you are authorized to us. I will add them to your User ID. For student worker or student organizations the email must come from your supervisor or advisors.

With the new copy request system, we have the option for a couple different forms. We have an Augsburg user guide in the process and a link will be added to the Copy Center page when complete. There is a general IOnS user guide linked at the bottom of the sign on page currently.

Print is for simple print jobs and has limited finishing option (only staple or stamping).

Print Advanced has more advance finishing options such as cutting, hole punch or laminate.

Copy Jobs are for items without a file to upload. If you are bringing in a hard copy for us to scan.

Booklet will be for Comb binding, coil binding or saddle stich books.

General Order is for reams of paper, envelopes and Augsburg general letterhead.

Service is to report a printer that need paper, toner or other trouble shooting.

The new system will allow you to store files so you will not need to upload each time you need to reprint the same item. Your cost centers will be in a pull-down menu so you don’t need to look it up each time. The option to pay at the Copy Center is also part of the drop down menu for any personal printing. (Fund numbers and project codes will still need to be entered by hand as too few departments use them.)

Please email copyctr@augsburg.edu if you have questions or stop by with your laptop and file if you would like a quick training session.

Interested in Research and Graduate School? Apply to the TRIO McNair Scholars Program

submitted by crombie@augsburg.edu

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2024 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2025 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2025. Students from all majors are welcome to apply, though preference is given to applicants that are interested in pursuing a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all participant slots are filled.

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through coursework, academic advising, workshops, and involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($6000) with an Augsburg faculty member during Summer of 2025.

The McNair Scholars Program is federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, applicants must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred). Unsure if you qualify? Please visit the link below for more information on eligibility requirements.

If you’re interested in learning more about McNair, please contact Lara Crombie, Program Coordinator, crombie@augsburg.edu.

Complete the I-94 Bike/Pedestrian Bridge Survey

submitted by peacock@augsburg.edu

In 2019 a truck hit the bike/pedestrian bridge over I-94 near the Augsburg campus, damaging it beyond repair. A temporary bridge was installed at that time. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) is now in the process of planning and designing a permanent bridge. MNDOT is seeking feedback to help understand the current use of the bridge and to gather ideas for potential improvements that could be incorporated into the design of the new bridge. To share your feedback, please complete the online survey and add comments to the Comment Map found on the MNDOT project page (link below).

Planning a Meeting or Event? Read This

submitted by obeys@augsburg.edu

Faculty and Staff: New Event Request Form

submitted by obeys@augsburg.edu

Between 20-25 new international students will soon join us for Fall Semester 2024!

As we collaboratively welcome this group, we plan for different experiences, including a dinner potentially hosted by you—our faculty and staff members—in your home.
