High Holy Days

submitted by dames@augsburg.edu

Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on Friday, September 15 and lasts through sundown Sunday, September 17. Yom Kippur begins at sundown on Sunday, September 24 and lasts until Monday night, September 25. Lesser known holidays Sukkot, Shmini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah are also part of this holiday season. Sukkot begins at sundown on Friday, September 29 and the non-work holiday lasts until sundown on Sunday, October 1. Sukkot continues (as a working holiday) until sundown on Friday, October 6. Shmini Atzeret begins that same night, Friday, October 6, and the following night begins Simchat Torah, which lasts until sundown on Sunday, October 8, both as non-work holidays. During these days, please be thoughtful of those who observe them by not scheduling meetings, conference calls, or deadlines. For teachers, please do not schedule tests, presentations, or other mandatory activities. And remember that many Jewish households host family and/or other guests for these holidays. For those who celebrate Christmas, imagine if everyone wanted something from you between the mornings of December 24th and December 26th while you had multiple things cooking, preparations to be in services, and family and friends coming over. Be thoughtful, kind, and inclusive. And greetings: “Happy New Year” is appropriate to say on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. “Have an easy/meaningful fast” is appropriate to say on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement when Jews traditionally fast for 25 hours. Or to avoid mentioning fasting (which not everyone can do) you can say “Have a meaningful holiday” instead. “Happy holiday” is appropriate for Sukkot, Shmini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah, and really most Jewish holidays. Thank you!!” (Credit: Ronald Weber and Shayna Sheinfeld)

Support for Victims of Queer Hate Crime

submitted by escobarr@augsburg.edu

TW// Mass Shooting, Queer Hate Crime, Mention of Death

On August 11th, a mass shooting occurred. This was a hate crime against the queer community. One person heartbreakingly lost their life, and six other people were wounded after one or more people opened fire. Nudieland is in the neighborhood of East Phillips, where the shooting occurred. It is a DIY venue that is an extremely pivotal space for Queer people, such as myself, in Southside. DIY venues like Nudieland are important for the Southside community, especially for those who are queer and marginalized. It is a space of support, community, creativity, and love. Again, this was targeted violence, not senseless as many news sources and MPD have claimed.

If you would like to learn more about this event, Reckon News has an article titled “Nudieland, a haven for queer and trans punks, shattered by hate-fueled mass shooting,” Otherwise please donate or share the Go Fund Me linked below to support the victims and those affected. We keep us safe <3 Support for victims of Nudieland shooting in Mpls

URGENT! Help our neighbors, the East Phillips Neighborhood Institute!

A historic environmental justice opportunity is unfolding in Minneapolis. The East Phillips Neighborhood Institute is preparing to buy the Roof Depot building and construct a cooperatively-run community hub centered around an indoor urban farm and affordable housing.

But EPNI is far from the finish line and in a critical phase of crowdfunding. Though we are pursuing grants and other long-term funding, we have immediate costs this fall that can’t wait. If you can help EPNI raise $50k by this Friday, August 25th, we’ll receive a crucial $10k matching donation, further increasing the impact of your donation.

We’re at just under $30K of our $50k goal, and we have five days left to get there!

To learn more about the East Phillips Neighborhood Institute, go to their website: https://www.epnifarm.org/

Follow the link below to contribute funds–if you’ve got a spare $5 or $500 bucks hanging around!–everything helps!

Campus Ministry Welcomes Pastoral Intern D.J. Chatelaine

submitted by dames@augsburg.edu

Campus Ministry welcomes D.J. Chatelaine as the pastoral intern for the upcoming year. D.J. (he/him) grew up in Owatonna, MN and graduated from Duke University in 2018. At Duke, D.J. majored in Religious Studies and Political Science with a History minor, and wrote his undergraduate thesis on The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and religious experience. D.J. returned to Southeastern Minnesota in 2018 and worked in children, youth, and family ministry at two different ELCA congregations for a total of five years, while beginning theological studies at Luther Seminary in September 2020. He lives in Faribault, MN with his wife, Carrie, their baby, Asha, dog (Suki), and cat (Dani Rojas). In his free time, D.J. enjoys traveling, being in nature, making music, running/biking/rowing, and cheering for a handful of sports teams (Liverpool, Duke, Twins, Cubs). D.J. believes that we are called together to support each other and find meaning in this thing called life, and that every person has a gift to give towards the flourishing of the whole world. He looks forward to accompanying the Augsburg community through Campus Ministry this year!

Web Editors Back-to-School Fall Clean Up

submitted by singhj@augsburg.edu

The beginning of the school year is a great time to look through stale content and delete it from your Augsburg website.
What is stale content?
Stale content is items that aren’t up to date. This can include pages, blog posts, old drafts, websites, documents, photos and more.
Why should I delete it?
Website speed and performance, risk, and site functionality.
What if I need that information at a later time?
Create a google doc to archive information or a screenshot. A lot of times people move something to draft and it lives there for a digital eternity because people are afraid to “delete” it.
