Somatic Coaching: Practice Client Needed

submitted by rohlfsen@augsburg.edu

Hi All, Nichole here (Program Manager for Customized Programs at the Center for Global Education & Experience/CGEE). I’m currently enrolled in the Strozzi Institute’s Somatic Coaching Certification Program and am finishing the program in May. I am looking for one more practice client to add towards the minimum hours of coaching needed to complete my program. If you are interested, please email me at rohlfsen@augsburg.edu to talk more in detail. I’m including some information here below as well.

What is Somatic Coaching?
Somatic coaching is similar to other forms of coaching in that it tends to focus on the present and future (rather than the past like therapy or counseling), and supports clients to envision and then craft the lives they want to live, as well as to help identify what might be getting in the way of living their life more fully. However, somatic coaching integrates a key component of self that most coaching does not address or integrate: the body.

Working with the body as an integral part of self, as well as thoughts, emotions, and spirit, allows for a deeper awareness and intelligence, and creates the possibility of sustainable and lasting change. What shows up when we are under pressure (i.e., stress, getting a new job, falling in love, losing a loved one, etc.) is what is embodied—that is to say what already lives in our tissues and was typically shaped in us at a very young age. While the way our bodies reacted and learned how to cope at that young age were very wise and necessary, these tendencies continue to show up in our lives under pressure often at the expense of what we really long for and care about. Working with and through the body in somatic coaching is a more effective and efficient way of transforming our lives and being able to have more of the embodied skills needed to show up how we really want and need to in order to create lives rich in fulfillment, connection, play, resilience, and love.

Part of this process will be on campus visits from three vendors showing what their solutions offer. The majority of these sessions will be with key departments (Human Resources, Finance, Registrar, and Advising) and some sessions will be aimed at a more general audience.

Below are times for the second vendor demonstrations by Jenzabar aimed at a general audience. All are welcome to attend these sessions, though your role will determine which one is most relevant to you.

What is the Cloud ERP Project, you ask? Augsburg is moving to a new comprehensive cloud-based information system between 2025 and 2029. If you’re a student, faculty, or staff member, then this project will be changing how you interact with Augsburg online over the next few years—registering for classes, submitting grades, viewing payslips, and more.

Volunteers Needed

submitted by hagerman@augsburg.edu

Volunteers Needed!

Augsburg University’s Health Commons are health-focused drop-in centers and an important part of our community. We have seen substantial growth over the last year and we need more help! While we have several locations, the Central Health Commons (Central Lutheran Church, 333 South 12th Street, Minneapolis) is our busiest.

Last year the Diaper Bank of MN invited us to be Strategic Partners and we now receive 100,000 diapers annually, most of which are distributed at the Central location. Last year approximately 5,000 people visited the Central Health Commons, and this year we expect to increase that number considerably.

We are looking for volunteers to help us distribute diapers and hygiene kits, Mondays and Thursdays from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. (volunteers should arrive at 9:30 a.m. for a little orientation and to help set-up).

If you can find a couple of hours a week to help us out, we would appreciate it. Here is the link to sign up: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0949ACAE2EA1FDCE9-augsburg#/ (select the calendar view to show the current date)

There are three types of volunteer options on the sign-up sheet: 1. Augsburg Student (any major) or Volunteer, 2. RN/PA students who provide health care services, 3. Spanish speaking volunteers (about 70% of the people who visit us are Hispanic and we would love at least one Spanish Speaking volunteer on site each day we are open).

For more information contact Colleen Hagerman, Nursing Department Coordinator, hagerman@augsburg.edu.

Call for Poetry

submitted by starckl@augsburg.edu

The Sierra Club (North Star Chapter) is looking for poems for the spring/summer issue of their print journal. See the prompt below, and send any entries to starckl@augsburg.edu by Friday, March 21.

*

Emily Dickinson’s poem about hope begins with the following four lines:

“Hope” is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all –

This issue’s poetry prompt is drawn from the form and spirit of Dickinson’s poem. Write four lines following Dickinson’s syllable count:

Line 1: 7 syllables
Line 2: 6 syllables
Line 3: 8 syllables
Line 4: 6 syllables

The topic of the poem should also mirror Dickinson’s– something about hope, or resilience, or springtime, or summer, or the natural world.

We look forward to reading your work!

Hungry for Hope: Letters to the Church from Young Adults Is Available for Preorder

submitted by weber3@augsburg.edu

Two of our authors are Augsburg Alums! Amber Kalina and J.D. Mechelke

In this remarkable volume, young adults voice their concerns and laments about the church’s
past and present, as well as their hopes and dreams for the church’s future. Unlike many current books on youth ministry, this is not a book about how to attract young adults back to church. Instead, it is an invitation to listen to young adults as they offer important insights regarding the capacity of the church—and the world—to flourish going forward.

The book’s contributors candidly discuss the issues that matter most to their generation: climate catastrophe, mental health, abuses of power, meaningful relationships, inclusion and liberation, and more. As they grieve how the church has caused harm and avoided hard truths, they also yearn for the church to better embody a community centered on Jesus. Driven by a deep hunger for hope, they explore how churches can become trustworthy partners in mending people’s relationships with God, with each other, and with the earth. This poignant, powerful book is essential reading for ministry leaders, congregations, youth groups, and anyone who cares about young adults’ engagement with Christianity.
