ED Talk February 16: Less but Better: Challenging Culture of Infinite Capacity in Higher Education

Loosely based on the book “Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less” by Greg McKeown, this talk will touch base on overcoming the obstacles faculty face as we are continually asked (or expect ourselves) to do more in our professional lives. The target audience for this ED talk is anybody — but especially faculty — who are currently working more than 40-45 hours/week and find this unsustainable.

Join Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright (Associate Professor of Biology) and Lyz Wendland (Assistant Professor of Art and Design) as they briefly share how they both, independently and using different strategies, created boundaries for themselves during Fall semester, worked 40-hour weeks, and applied McKeown’s lesson: “If you don’t prioritize your life, someone else will.”

CTL will offer ED Talks (based on the concept of TED Talks) before each faculty meeting from 3:10-3:30pm over Zoom (link provided below; Augsburg login required). This year’s theme is “The Future of the Professoriate at Augsburg”, and 2021-2022 Ed talks will be framed under this broad theme that speaks to our “new normal” and beyond.

WHO: Open to any teaching faculty or staff at Augsburg

(note: adjuncts can apply on the CTL website to receive a stipend for participation)

WHAT: A 90-minute workshop (led by Drs. Tara Mader (HPE) and Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright (BIO), the 2022-2023 coordinators of the ICD grants and workshops) that will (1) introduce you to the key components of integrated course design* (ICD), (2) work with you to plan an immediate, practical improvement you can make to a course, and (3) give you “preferred status” if you apply for a 2022-2023 ICD grant (open to full-time faculty, only).

This workshop is also designated as an equity and/or inclusion-based event that counts toward your Good or Advanced standing in the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program!

URGO Academic-Year Research Funds

URGO now has funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 80 hours of research by May 23.

Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals immediately. The URGO Advisory Committee will begin reviewing proposals February 21st.

On-Campus Research

Free Trip to Holocaust Museum – Due February 21

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.

The 2022 trip will take place on April 5, 2022. Applications are due on February 21, 2022 and can be found at https://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. If you would like to learn more about the program or would like advising on the application, please contact the URGO office at urgo@augsburg.edu.

The in-person 2022 Minnesota Private Colleges’ Job & Internship Fair is coming up on Thursday, February 24th! Prior to the fair, be sure to have your resume reviewed by a Strommen Career Peer Advisor. Having your resume reviewed by our trained Peer Advisors this week will allow you to get feedback and make any changes early. Thus, ensuring that your document will make the best impression on potential employers and recruiters on Thursday, February 24th!

Undergraduate resume and cover letter drop-in hours are Mondays 10:00 AM-4:00 PM, Tuesdays 9:00-11:30 AM, Wednesdays 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Thursdays 9:00-11:30 AM, & Fridays 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. We’re located in Christensen Center, Suite 100. (Across from Einstein’s.)

Students are able to use 3 hours a week; 3 one hour sessions or 6 thirty-minute sessions. You can access TutorMe through any of your Moodle classes. At the top left of your screen there is an orange tab to see the side panel of resources. As you scroll down, you will see the “Augsburg Tools” section and underneath is the link to TutorMe. Want to engage in leadership, service, and learning to make a difference at Augsburg and in the wider community?
Apply to be in one of Augsburg’s three Public Leadership Scholar Programs: Christensen Scholars, Interfaith Scholars, or Sabo Scholars.
In these programs, you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in faith-based non-profits, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive at least a $2,000 scholarship.
Who is Eligible?
Christensen and Interfaith Scholars – Current sophomores and juniors who plan to study on campus all of the 2022-23 academic year.
Sabo Scholars – Current students (any level) who plan to study on campus all of the 2022-23 academic year.

The Augsburg Leadership Awards are given at the end of every spring semester to outstanding student leaders and student organizations. Members of the Augsburg Senior Leadership Society are inducted, graduating Act Six scholars are honored, and recent graduates of the Emerging Leaders Program are celebrated and recognized. Transcultural Music Therapy Study Abroad in July – Apply Now

Explore meanings and expressions of music, health, illness, and healing, transculturally in the context of South Africa. The focus of this course is on developing an understanding of individuals, families, groups and communities with diverse cultural backgrounds and the use of music in community and for healing within their culture.

Apply For URGO Student Conference Travel Funding

URGO has a limited amount of funds this year to support students presenting their research at conferences.

URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly to make decisions on applications.

URGO Summer Research – Phase 1 Applications Due February 16

Are you looking for a paid summer research or creative activity opportunity here on campus? URGO applications for 2022 summer research are now available on the URGO website at http://www.augsburg.edu/urgo/research/on-campus-research/ All fields of study welcome!

We have multiple summer opportunities available for students.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 12th – July 27th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 16th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research is going on in your department!

Augsburg’s annual Zyzzogeton Research Symposium showcases the work of over 80 undergraduate researchers in all academic disciplines and will take place on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. Students who have conducted research over the course of the last year and would like to present a poster should register at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) by March 1 (a mentor-approved abstract is required to register). Students planning to present at Zyzzogeton are encouraged to attend the Postermaking Workshop on Tuesday, February 15, 6:30 – 8:00pm. Please RSVP when you register.

Gilman Study Abroad Scholarship Workshops: Feb 22 – Big $$$ for Study Abroad

The Gilman Scholarship is a study abroad scholarship of up to several thousand dollars! It’s a competitive scholarship, but Auggies have a good track record of being awarded. Come to the Gilman Scholarship info sessions/workshop to learn more about study abroad, the scholarship, and tips for submitting a competitive application.

Although there have been gains in diversity across various healthcare sectors, leadership positions continue to be disproportionately held by White men. Understanding the impact that social determinants of health like racism and discrimination have on healthcare outcomes for Black women, it is bad business for them to be underrepresented at the decision and policy-making levels in healthcare. How do we solve this pervasive problem?
Join us as we share how the University of Chicago Medical Center (UCM) is leveraging a formal sponsorship program focused on increasing the representation of Black women at the senior leadership level. Also, participants will learn how UCM is using a formal sponsorship program – including critical conversations at the executive leadership level about the lived experience of Black women – to accelerate workplace culture transformation and advance healthcare equity. We will also explore how this may be applied in other organizations.

Annual Required Augsburg University Anti-Racism Training

During the June 9, 2020, town hall for faculty and staff, President Pribbenow announced seven new equity initiatives born out of response to the murder of George Floyd and Augsburg’s renewed commitment to accelerate and expand upon our university’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion during a national moment of racial and social justice reawakening. One of these initiatives was the requirement of Augsburg faculty and staff to complete an annual anti-racism training.

Please note that there are two remaining opportunities for faculty and staff to attend this training and fulfill this requirement. The spring training opportunity will take place on Thu, Feb 17 at 3:30-7:00 p.m. via Zoom and the make-up May training opportunity will take place on Thu, May 12 at 2:30-6:00 p.m. via Zoom.

Equity and Social Justice Training Opportunities
