The Biology Department Greenhouse on the rooftop of the Hagfors Center is open to the Augsburg community on the first Thursday of the month.
Come see what’s new and in bloom, including the curious and smelly voodoo lily (Amorphophallus konjac), a perhaps even more pungent cousin to the fabled corpse flower!
The next First Thursday is this week, February 3, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The greenhouse is located on the 4th floor of the Hagfors Center.

The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library announced the finalists for the Minnesota Book Award on January 29, 2022. Howling Bird Press nonfiction prize winning title SELF, DIVIDED by John Medeiros was named one of four finalists in the category of memoir and creative nonfiction.
The winner will be announced at the Thirty-Fourth Annual Minnesota Book Awards on April 26, 7:00 p.m., in Saint Paul at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts.
SELF, DIVIDED was selected from a national contest run by Howling Bird Press, and was edited, and published by student editors enrolled in Publishing I & II, the yearlong English course offered by the MFA Program in Creative Writing at Augsburg University, taught by Jim Cihlar.
In 1995 John Medeiros and his identical twin brother participated in a gene therapy study in which the HIV-positive twin was infused with billions of genes from the HIV-negative twin. This memoir details, from an individual perspective, how the world responded (and didn’t respond) to the first (and still ongoing) pandemic of HIV/AIDS. SELF, DIVIDED explores the dysfunctional yet enduring relationships that surround this pivotal moment in Medeiros’s life and family, brilliantly capturing how we all are connected, in one way or another, to those around us.
John Medeiros is a poet, memoirist, identical twin, and lawyer. He is the author of couplets for a shrinking world and co-editor of Queer Voices: Poetry, Prose, and Pride. His work has appeared in numerous anthologies and literary journals, and he is the recipient of two Minnesota State Arts Board grants, Gulf Coast’s Nonfiction Award, and the AWP Intro Journals Award. He has an MFA and a JD from Hamline University, and he lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with his husband.

Spring semester credit refunds will be processed the first week of February, with checks being sent out on Friday the 4th! You can sign up for eRefund through Records and Registration to receive your credit refund via direct deposit.
Please verify that your mailing address is up to date. We cannot send a check to your campus box!

The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.
This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2022 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…
are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 12th – July 27th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.
URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.
Phase 1 of the applications are due February 16th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research is going on in your department!

During the June 9, 2020, town hall for faculty and staff, President Pribbenow announced seven new equity initiatives born out of response to the murder of George Floyd and Augsburg’s renewed commitment to accelerate and expand upon our university’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion during a national moment of racial and social justice reawakening. One of these initiatives was the requirement of Augsburg faculty and staff to complete an annual anti-racism training.
Please note that there are two remaining opportunities for faculty and staff to attend this training and fulfill this requirement. The spring training opportunity will take place on Thu, Feb 17 at 3:30-7:00 p.m. via Zoom and the make-up May training opportunity will take place on Thu, May 12 at 2:30-6:00 p.m. via Zoom.

CTL ED Talks (based on the concept of TED Talks) take place immediately before each faculty meeting from 3:10-3:30pm over Zoom and recordings are archived on the CTL website. Presenters have 15 minutes to present in any way they choose (as long as it is compatible with synchronous Zoom). CTL’s theme for the 2021-2022 academic year is “The Future of the Professoriate at Augsburg”, a broad topic that looks to our current “new normal” and beyond.

The Provost and Faculty Development Committee are pleased to offer two types of grants to support Augsburg faculty scholarship in Summer 2022 and/or during the 2022-2023 academic year.
The Scholarship Grant provides up to $4000 to support the scholarly endeavors of full-time Augsburg faculty.
The Provost’s Internationalization Grant provides up to $2500 to support the collaboration of full-time Augsburg faculty with an Augsburg CGEE Global site or with existing international partner institutions.

Apply to be in one of Augsburg’s three Public Leadership Scholar Programs: Christensen Scholars, Interfaith Scholars, or Sabo Scholars.
In these programs, you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in faith-based non-profits, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive at least a $2,000 scholarship.

The murder of George Floyd and the ensuing protests calling for racial justice have reverberated throughout Minnesota, around the country, and the world. How have these events disturbed and reoriented the understanding of racial justice? What does this reckoning mean for people who espouse a religious or spiritual worldview? How does this moment provide an opportunity to reaffirm, rearticulate, or revise how religious and spiritual traditions work towards racial justice?
The Batalden Seminar in Applied Ethics on February 8th, 11:00-12:00 will address these questions. It will highlight a video series of practitioners from differing religious, spiritual, and secular perspectives in conversation on the issue of racial justice interspersed with a panel discussion with the video participants and student respondents.

Distribution of free N95 masks has begun at some Minnesota pharmacies.
Hy-Vee stores have begun giving out free masks this week, and Walgreens may have masks available as soon as Friday, January 28. CVS reports that they will begin distributing free N95 masks “in the coming weeks.”

We have hosted the Minnesota Debate & Advocacy Workshop (MDAW) at Augsburg University for more than a decade. Last year, camps were held virtually. We’re back for 2022!
We are excited to invite your child to speech & debate camp at MDAW this summer- now with in-person and virtual options!
Join us for deep learning, skill-building, fun, and community this summer. Both in-person and virtual options are available. In-person camp takes place at Augsburg University’s campus in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Tara Mader (HPE) and Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright (BIO), the 2022-2023 coordinators of the ICD grants and workshops) that will (1) introduce you to the key components of integrated course design* (ICD), (2) work with you to plan an immediate, practical improvement you can make to a course, and (3) give you “preferred status” if you apply for a 2022-2023 ICD grant (open to full-time faculty, only).
This workshop is also designated as an equity and/or inclusion-based event that counts toward your Good or Advanced standing in the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program!

Are you a faculty member who would like to learn more about the parliamentary procedure we use at faculty meetings and get more comfortable participating? The Minnesota State Association of Parliamentarians is offering “Meetings Without Misery: Robert’s Rules for Efficient Meetings” as a virtual annual seminar this Saturday, January 29th from 8:45am-noon. It’s open to all and is designed for “anyone who would like to run or attend better meetings”.

As we enter the third week of the semester (and our FIFTH semester teaching during the COVID pandemic), the Faculty Development Committee (FDC) wants to remind you of this wonderful seminar that Ellie Olson, Director of the Center for Wellness and Counseling, gave last October.
The seminar, “Back in the Classroom: the Impact of COVID on Faculty”, guides faculty to reflect on the emotional and cognitive impact COVID has had on all of us, with guidance of how to manage and respond to it. The Provost and Faculty Development Committee are pleased to offer two types of grants to support Augsburg faculty scholarship in Summer 2022 and/or during the 2022-2023 academic year.
The Scholarship Grant provides up to $4000 to support the scholarly endeavors of full-time Augsburg faculty.
The Provost’s Internationalization Grant provides up to $2500 to support the collaboration of full-time Augsburg faculty with an Augsburg CGEE Global site or with existing international partner institutions.

CTL ED Talks (based on the concept of TED Talks) take place immediately before each faculty meeting from 3:10-3:30pm over Zoom and recordings are archived on the CTL website. Presenters have 15 minutes to present in any way they choose (as long as it is compatible with synchronous Zoom). CTL’s theme for the 2021-2022 academic year is “The Future of the Professoriate at Augsburg”, a broad topic that looks to our current “new normal” and beyond.

Campus Ministry will hold a Commemoration of the Second Anniversary of the Onset of the Covid Crisis on Wednesday, February 2 at 10:40 am in Hoversten Chapel. On January 31, 2020, the Secretary of Health and Human Services determined that a public health emergency existed nationwide. In recognition of two years of the pandemic, we will hold space for grieving those we have lost and reflecting on the challenges and losses. Augsburg Campus Ministries invites you to participate in its alternative spring break to Albuquerque, New Mexico, one of the oldest cities in the United States. Albuquerque has a unique multicultural history and heritage with Native American and Hispanic and Latino cultural influences. The city is located in north central New Mexico near the Sandia Mountains.
While in Albuquerque, we will be partnering with Service Learning Camps, and our days will be structured with community service projects, time for reflection, learning opportunities, and visiting local attractions.

The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially space physics & engineering, mathematics, and science/mathematics education.
This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2022 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

During the June 9, 2020, town hall for faculty and staff, President Pribbenow announced seven new equity initiatives born out of response to the murder of George Floyd and Augsburg’s renewed commitment to accelerate and expand upon our university’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion during a national moment of racial and social justice reawakening. One of these initiatives was the requirement of Augsburg faculty and staff to complete an annual anti-racism training.
Please note that there are two remaining opportunities for faculty and staff to attend this training and fulfill this requirement. The spring training opportunity will take place on Thu, Feb 17 at 3:30-7:00 p.m. via Zoom and the make-up May training opportunity will take place on Thu, May 12 at 2:30-6:00 p.m. via Zoom.

The Minnesota State Association of Parliamentarians is offering “Meetings Without Misery: Robert’s Rules for Efficient Meetings” as a virtual annual seminar this Saturday, January 29th from 8:45am-noon. The Provost and Faculty Development Committee are pleased to offer two types of grants to support Augsburg faculty scholarship in Summer 2022 and/or during the 2022-2023 academic year.
The Scholarship Grant provides up to $4000 to support the scholarly endeavors of full-time Augsburg faculty.
The Provost’s Internationalization Grant provides up to $2500 to support the collaboration of full-time Augsburg faculty with an Augsburg CGEE Global site or with existing international partner institutions.
Both grant applications are open until Friday, March 4, 2022 at noon and funds awarded will be available beginning June 1, 2022. To read the full Call for Proposals for each of these grants and apply, please see the Annual Awards page of the CTL website.

We have multiple summer opportunities available for students.
URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 12th – July 27th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.
URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.
Phase 1 of the applications are due February 16th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research is going on in your department!

We will be discussing two important topics for this event; one will be focused on the traditional gender roles that we see within the Hmong community and in society. The other topic that will be discussed is how we can further understand and help ourselves to better improve our world, reality, and those around us! The plant and the pot are meant to represent you and how you can thrive, grow, and prosper– but only if you remember to prioritize and take care of yourself.
The main purpose of this event is to deconstruct the social norms while still acknowledging and respecting our cultural roots and traditions. In having this event, our intent is to deliver a positive experience for our members to feel welcomed and accepted.

Campus Kitchen is now hosting open Food Lab cooking hours. Stop by Hagfors 108 to cook any Thursday from 5-7pm! Open to all Auggies. Campus Ministry will hold a Commemoration of the Second Anniversary of the Onset of the Covid Crisis on Wednesday, February 2 at 10:40 am in Hoversten Chapel. On January 31, 2020, the Secretary of Health and Human Services determined that a public health emergency existed nationwide. In recognition of two years of the pandemic, we will hold space for grieving those we have lost and reflecting on the challenges and losses. In these programs, you will have the opportunity to participate in a yearlong academic seminar with a cohort of your peers. You will contribute to public leadership on campus and in the wider community in faith-based non-profits, through interfaith engagement, or civic life. You will also be able to earn 4 upper division semester credits in the Religion or Political Science and receive at least a $2,000 scholarship.

The murder of George Floyd and the ensuing protests calling for racial justice have reverberated throughout Minnesota, around the country, and the world. How have these events disturbed and reoriented the understanding of racial justice? What does this reckoning mean for people who espouse a religious or spiritual worldview? How does this moment provide an opportunity to reaffirm, rearticulate, or revise how religious and spiritual traditions work towards racial justice?
The Batalden Seminar in Applied Ethics on February 8th, 11:00-12:00 will address these questions. It will highlight a video series of practitioners from differing religious, spiritual, and secular perspectives in conversation on the issue of racial justice interspersed with a panel discussion with the video participants and student respondents.

We have multiple summer opportunities available for students.
URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 12th – July 27th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.
URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.
Phase 1 of the applications are due February 16th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research is going on in your department!

The Provost and Faculty Development Committee are pleased to offer two types of grants to support Augsburg faculty scholarship in Summer 2022 and/or during the 2022-2023 academic year.
The Scholarship Grant provides up to $4000 to support the scholarly endeavors of full-time Augsburg faculty.
The Provost’s Internationalization Grant provides up to $2500 to support the collaboration of full-time Augsburg faculty with an Augsburg CGEE Global site or with existing international partner institutions.
Both grant applications are open until Friday, March 4, 2022 at noon and funds awarded will be available beginning June 1, 2022. To read the full Call for Proposals for each of these grants and apply, please see the Annual Awards page of the CTL website.
