Join CTL and CWC for a Zoom Session on Faculty Well-Being: November 16, 3:30–4:30 p.m.

Teaching faculty and staff are consistently called to support and care for their students, sometimes in complex and challenging situations. In order to fulfill this role, teaching faculty and staff must also have tools, environments, and strategies that promote care and balance for themselves. This session, hosted by CTL, the Health and Well-Being Task Force and CWC, will focus on helping teaching faculty and staff consider strategies and perspectives that can improve their own sense of professional and personal well-being.

This session will be recorded and available on the CTL website home page by Nov 23, 2022.

Do Faculty Know What Students Are Really Thinking?

Immediately preceding the next faculty meeting, please join the assessment committee from 3 – 3:30pm on Wednesday, November 9th, in Hagfors Center room 106 for an opportunity to discuss the results of a recent pair of high-quality surveys of students and faculty.

In the spring of 2022, hundreds of Augsburg First Year and Senior students completed the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). This survey measures students’ perception of Academic Challenge, Student-Faculty Interactions, Quality of Interactions, and experience with High Impact Practices. Meanwhile, tens of faculty members (proportionally, a fine result!) provided their perception of students’ experiences in these same domains on the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE).

The combined NSSE-FSSE results offer a unique opportunity to directly compare student and faculty perspectives on a wide range of academic issues. Whether you teach in upper or lower-division courses – and regardless of your academic discipline – these data offer something for everyone.

A copy of the summary report will be made available to faculty members who RSVP in advance of the session. We will set aside the majority of the time for discussion of the results, so we encourage attendees to preview the findings. A recording of the event will be available for those who are unable to attend. Unfortunately, any recording can’t possibly offer the thrills and excitement of first-hand experience with such breathtaking data, so in-person attendance is highly encouraged.

Boren Scholarship for Language Study Abroad

The Boren Scholarship is an initiative by the US Federal Government to increase the study of languages by individuals committed to public service careers. The Boren Scholarship can be used to cover a variety of study abroad experiences where language learning is the focus. URGO and Study Abroad provide joint advising on this program and can assist any applicant in selecting a program, developing budgets and writing/editing application essays.

Scholarship amounts:
Up to $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
Up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
Up to $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study By November 18 (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

New Staff Position: Area Coordinator, Residence Life

The Area Coordinator supports the Assistant Director of Residence Life with departmental planning, student leader selection and training, and student leadership and development. The Area Coordinator will provideessential leadership in crisis management, student welfare concerns, and administrative responsibilities relative to the operation of a comprehensive residential program.
Primary Responsibilities:
– Support the academic mission of the University within the residence halls through leading efforts around student learning/development, community development, and civic engagement programming.
– Provide leadership of a residential area, including supervision and evaluation of student leaders, including Resident Assistants and Leads.
– Advise and mentor individual students, provide support to students of concern, and conduct mediations between residents.
– Coordinate the development of programs and activities within the residential area; work with student leaders to develop a program vision, implement quality concerns, and track programmatic efforts including managing a programming budget.
– Direct overall housing operations in residential and office facilities within the area.
– Oversee secondary assignments within the office as determined by the needs of the department.
– Assist the department with tasks such as housing selection, student leader selection, and student leader training.
– Participate as part of the on-call duty rotation, including weekends and holidays, and respond to crisis and emergency situations.
– Work collaboratively with campus partners, including but not limited to facilities, public safety, and other student support areas.
– Serve as a hearing officer for student conduct cases, including communicating and enforcing student responsibilities.
– Perform other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor(s).
Additional Examples of Work Performed:
– Participate in short- and long-range planning for the department.
– Serve on University committees and work groups.
– Familiarity with university and community resources for referral and outreach opportunities.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
– This position requires the incumbent to live on campus in University provided housing.
– Typical work environment is an office, working at a desk for long periods of time.
– Regular phone and computer use.

2023 Open Enrollment: November 7–18

Open Enrollment begins Monday, November 7 and continues through Friday, November 18. This is the only time of year outside of a qualifying life event when benefits-eligible employees may elect or change their benefit options, connect with the variety of available resources to help make the best decisions to meet their needs and enroll for the coming year.
During open enrollment, no action means no coverage. Employees who fail to act by November 18 will not have coverage effective January 1, 2023, and must wait until the next open enrollment period to elect coverage, unless a qualifying life event occurs.

Students are able to use 3 hours a week; 3 one hour sessions or 6 thirty-minute sessions. You can access TutorMe through any of your Moodle classes. At the top left of your screen there is an orange tab to see the side panel of resources. As you scroll down, you will see the “Augsburg Tools” section and underneath is the link to TutorMe. URGO Offering Travel Grants for Student Researchers

URGO has a limited amount if travel funding to award this academic year. URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year and will begin reviewing applications November 14th.

Building Bridges: Somalia, Norway, Minnesota

Augsburg’s Partner, Norway House, invites members of our community to attend a conversation with Mohamed Abdulkadir of the Somali Organization for Human Rights and Integration Norway (SOMI).

Abdulkadir is actively working to build connections and bridges between Minnesota’s and Norway’s Somali communities.

This free event will shed light on the relationship between Norway and Somalia and the history of the Somali diaspora. Norway House will offer thoughts on the Norwegian-American experience and the work of Norway House.

Come share your voice and ideas on opportunities for future collaboration between our communities.

The Thor Heyerdahl Institute (of Norway) is continuing last year’s success and invites you to attend this year’s virtual event on NOV 10, 2022. The event aims to honor the cultural legacy of Thor Heyerdahl and continue to develop his research and ideas, highlighting his involvement in international dialogue, his advocacy for clean oceans and support towards world peace.
