The Individual & Society: An Introduction to Social Psychology (SOC 272)
Fall 2026, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.

How do the people around you influence and even shape the way you think, the way you feel, the way you behave? How do individuals relate to one another within the groups in which they participate? And what impact do group dynamics have on their members as well as on the world around them? In this course, we introduce the field of social psychology from a sociological perspective as we examine topics such as self and identity, socialization, emotions, attitudes and prejudice, group and collective behavior, and deviance and social control.

Mental Health Impact of Operation Metro Surge—Participate and Invite Others

submitted by velamcco@augsburg.edu

Members of the Augsburg Community,

You are invited to participate in a study focusing on the mental health impact of Operation Metro Surge, in which the Department of Homeland Security sent approximately 3000 ICE and Border Control agents to the Twin Cities beginning in December 2025 and officially lasting through mid-February of 2026.

Prof. James Vela-McConnell, in the Department of Sociology here at Augsburg, is conducting an anonymous survey that is intended to further document the impact of this event on our community and ourselves and you are invited to participate. This online survey should take approximately 30 minutes and can be completed at your convenience. At the end of the survey, you will have the opportunity to enter a raffle for one of six $50 gift cards or one of eight $25 gift. Alternatively, the raffle winners may choose to donate the value of their gift card to a local organization working to support immigrant residents of the Twin Cities metro.

To take the survey, check your emails for your invitation to participate or simply click on the link below for the flyer with the link & QR code.

Also, we are hoping to include as many residents of the Twin Cities area as possible in this research on the mental health impact of Operation Metro Surge. Please feel free forward the flyer and invite your local family, friends, neighbors, etc. to participate. In addition to the entire Augsburg community, anyone who lives and/or works in the Twin Cities metro region and is 18 years of age or older may participate.

Thank you in advance for your participation.

New Passphrase Requirement Coming: May 12

submitted by krajewsk@augsburg.edu

On May 12 we will be moving from passwords to passphrases for the campus. You are not required to do anything at that time. But on or after May 12 when you change your password the new rules will apply. For most of our “average” folks, who do not have access to institutional data for their job, once you change to a passphrase you will not need to change it again. For more details read our Passphrase FAQ. https://sites.augsburg.edu/it/get-help/passphrases-faq/

submitted by commencement@augsburg.edu

Graduating students, we’re looking forward to seeing you this evening for commencement! Last-minute reminders:

TICKETS
Print or download tickets before arriving at the stadium to avoid last-minute ticket issues, and remember that each of your guests must have a ticket, including infants and children. If you have shared your tickets electronically (through a link or text message), your guests should download the tickets before getting to the door. Guests with tickets that do not work or no verification of having gotten a ticket will not be allowed inside the venue.

PROHIBITED ITEMS AT US BANK STADIUM
The following items are prohibited at US Bank Stadium: firearms and weapons, drugs, alcohol, outside food and beverages other than water, balloons, signs on staffs or poles, noisemakers, speakers, confetti, and bags larger than a standard backpack (approximately 8×15 inches). Water bottles must be empty and not made of metal, or be sealed.

LIVESTREAM
The full commencement ceremony will be available via live webcast on the university’s YouTube channel and at augsburg.edu/commencement.

LINING UP AND CROSSING THE STAGE
Graduates will form two lines to enter the stadium floor. If you want to sit next to someone specific, make sure they are in front of or behind you in the same line. When walking up to receive your diploma on stage, you have the option to shake hands with President Pribbenow or a member of the Board of Regents. If you wish to shake their hand, please extend your hand first to the person in front of you. This will let them know your preference.

MEET YOUR GUESTS OUTSIDE AFTER THE CEREMONY
Immediately following the ceremony, graduates will be directed by the marshals to depart and proceed to the stadium exits on the main level. Please plan to meet your family and friends in the plaza outside of the stadium.

View day-of instructions and all details on the commencement website.
