Technology offers new modes of teaching, such as Interactive Video Conferencing (IVC). This workshop will prepare you to use Zoom in a classroom, to think through the lens of the camera, and how to manage group work when some students are connecting virtually.

Staff are welcome to attend as space allows. This workshop will be “Zoomed” for those needing to attend remotely. It will also be recorded. Please contact Christy Mattingly for the link.

In response to requests from faculty, this year’s Moodle is more visually appealing and user-friendly than ever before, featuring drop-down menus and a “drawer” that streamlines navigation, search tools that let you quickly access courses and isolate student forum posts, and integrated audio/video recording options. It also includes a variety of pre-formatted templates that let you quickly customize your course with a variety of formats, styles, and fonts. Moodle 2018-19 isn’t your grandfather’s Moodle! (Adjunct instructors who attend this event are eligible for a $50 stipend.)

You get the picture! It’s a time to celebrate, to rededicate to this work, to elevate our learning and skills, and to network with each other to strengthen our movement.

The Overcoming Racism Conference grew out of the work of ASDIC (Antiracism Dialogue Circles) and Cherokee Park United Church. What started as a community meeting at the church quickly outgrew the space. The conference now meets at Metropolitan State University and draws people from all over the Twin Cities and aims to inspire people to work to overcome racism where they live, work and play, and to provide them with practical tools to do so. The conference draws more than 600 people, and offers keynote speakers, many workshops, and opportunities to network. Conference participants include community activists, educators, government employees, grass roots organizations, and community members who want to learn more. The conference workshops provide them with a wide range of offerings, appealing to both those who are new to antiracism work and want to get involved and those who have been working on these issues for decades.

Mental Health: Mind Matters Exhibit and Facilitated Discussion at the Science Museum of Minnesota

One in five US adults aged 18 or older experience mental illness in a given year. Like most schools, Augsburg is seeing the impact of this trend with our students, both in and out of the classroom.

Join the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) in their sponsored event viewing the brand new exhibit: Mental Health: Mind Matters at the Science Museum of Minnesota, followed by a discussion led by campus staff/faculty on this topic.

The Science Museum describes this event as a “groundbreaking exhibition that aims to build a greater understanding of the importance of mental health and create a safe space for important conversations about mental illness. Hands-on experience through the Mental Health: Mind Matters exhibit brings you closer to the facts, feelings, and issues surrounding this topic that touches so many lives.”

Attendees will meet at the Science Museum and will be provided admission to the exhibit. Following the viewing, attendees will engage in a facilitated discussion on how this topic relates to Augsburg University and our students.

Foss Lobeck Miles Water Shutoff

The City of Minneapolis Water Department will be replacing the main water meter in the Foss Lobeck Miles Center the morning of Thursday, August 23rd at approximately 6:30AM. It is estimated the building water will be off for 30 minutes to replace the meter. Our team will be onsite to make sure all the faucets and toilets are free from any obstructions after the completion of the replacement. You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!

-Trust Your Instincts – If you sense trouble, get away

-Be Observant and Aware – Remain alert, be aware of your surroundings, observe the other people around you. Know who is around you. Be alert for suspicious behavior (e.g. a person wearing a long coat in the middle of summer).

-Walk Confidently and Do Not Make Yourself a Target – Robbers are looking for an easy target. Keep your head up and eyes alert and walk at a steady pace. Do not walk while looking at your phone and avoid carrying lots of packages or other belongings. Walk in groups whenever possible.

-If You are Robbed – Do your best to stay calm and remember: safety first! Follow the robber’s directions, but do not volunteer more than asked for. If you have to move, tell the robber what you are doing and why. Try to get a good look at the robber so you can describe them later. Give the robber time to leave and note the direction they travel.

-After a Robbery – CALL DPS OR THE POLICE IMMEDIATELY. Try to recall as much as you can about the robber including physical description, clothing, speech and mannerisms.

-Notify DPS of any concerning or suspicious activity immediately.

In compliance with the “Timely Notice” provision of the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998 Augsburg University Department of Public Safety is giving notice of a concerning incident that occurred on 22nd Ave in front of the Hagfors Center on the Minneapolis campus.

REPORTED OFFENSE: Robbery

Today, 08/17/2018, DPS received a report that at 3:10 PM on 8/17/2018, a robbery at gunpoint occurred on 21st Ave S in front of the Hagfors Center at Augsburg University. The victim, who is not affiliated with Augsburg, was sitting on the benches on the east side of the Hagfors Center looking at their phone. The victim was approached by two individuals, one put a gun to the victim’s head and demanded the victim’s property. A backpack, purse and cell phone were taken. The suspects fled to a black sedan parked on the east side of 22nd Ave S under the Hagfors Center skyway and left Northbound on 22nd Ave. There is no further suspect or vehicle description at this point.

SAFETY TIPS:
Keep your head up and always be aware of your surroundings

Do not sit or walk with your phone/laptop out
Do not walk with earbuds or headphones on so you can hear what is going on around you
Call Public Safety immediately if you notice any suspicious behavior
STATUS: This incident is currently under investigation by Public Safety and the Minneapolis
Police. Anyone who may have information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Minneapolis Police or Augsburg Public Safety at 612-330-1717.

Help send off the 2018 River Semester Crew

The second River Semester launches this week, with 15 students heading off for a 100-day expedition down the Mississippi. On Thurs., Aug. 23, the group will gather at 9:00am on the front steps of the Christensen Center and hike off from campus at approximately 9:30, making the 9 mile trek to Ft. Snelling State Park and B’dote. Family and friends are welcome hike with them along the river gorge, stopping at Minnehaha Falls Park for lunch before continuing on to Ft. Snelling and their first camp site at Picnic Island.

On Fri., Aug. 24, the group will have a short ceremony, send-off, and “blessing of the fleet” at approximately 7:30am at the boat ramp adjacent to Picnic Island. Directions to Ft. Snelling Park can be found on their website. The gate to the park opens at 7:00am, and there is a $7 entrance fee (unless you have a MN State Park annual pass). Once in the park, follow signs to Picnic Island. There is ample parking there and once you are in the parking lot it will be obvious where the group is.

“The Arsonists” Auditions – Sept 10 & 11 6:30-9:30 pm

The Augsburg Theater Arts Department will hold auditions for its main stage production, THE ARSONISTS, by Max Frisch, directed by Barbra Berlovitz. Auditions will be held in Tjornhom-Nelson Theater, in Foss Center, Sept. 10 & 11 from 6:30 to 9:30pm. An audition sign-up sheet will be posted on the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater door in the Atrium of the Foss Center.

All Augsburg students are welcome to audition!

Please prepare a 1-2 minute comedic monologue and something to sing. Vocal piece must be brief, but can be from any song or style of your choosing.

– Please arrive at the audition site at least 10 minutes before your scheduled audition time. Those who arrive after their scheduled time may not be allowed to audition.
– Please wear appropriate attire to auditions. (I.e. dress accordingly as you would for a professional audition. No jeans, flip-flops, t-shirts, crop tops, halter tops, etc.)
– Please bring to auditions a complete list of all conflicts you may have with the rehearsal and performance schedule including work, classes, social commitments (such as weddings, anniversaries, etc.) and ensemble performances. Actors should declare all known conflicts at the time of the general audition.

Call-back auditions will be held Sept. 13 at 7pm.
Rehearsals will begin Sept. 20 and performance dates are Nov. 9, 10, 15-18.

Sad News About a Colleague

It is with deep sadness that I write to share the news that Michelle Nies passed away from cancer on August 9. Despite her illness, Michelle remained committed to her job and led by example. She was a strong champion of the work her staff does to create the best physical environment for our students, faculty and staff. Her positive approach to life was evident and has impacted us all.

For the past five years, Michelle served the Augsburg community first as the Custodial Services Supervisor and later as the Custodial Services Manager. Michelle also served on staff senate for two years and participated on a variety of committees during her time at Augsburg.

For many years, she was an active board member of the MN chapter of the International Executive Housekeepers Association. In 2017, Michelle received her bachelors degree from Metro State University. However, her biggest source of pride was her son, Christopher, who is a student at Augsburg and on the Dean’s List.

We are grateful for Michelle’s many contributions to the Augsburg community. Our heartfelt prayers go out to Michelle’s husband, Paul, her son Christopher, and her extended family.

The funeral service will be at 10 AM Saturday, August 18 at Roseville Lutheran Church, 1215 W. Roselawn Avenue. Visitation will be from 9-10 AM prior to the service at church.

Augsburg will also have a gathering for a time of remembrance in the coming month. Additional details will be shared as soon as they become available.

Mental Health: Mind Matters Exhibit at the Science Museum of Minnesota – Facilitated Discussion

One in five US adults aged 18 or older experience mental illness in a given year. Like most schools, Augsburg is seeing the impact of this trend on our students, both in and out of the classroom.

Join the Center for Teaching and Learning on Thursday, August 23rd, 2018 in their sponsored event viewing the brand new exhibit: Mental Health: Mind Matters at the Science Museum of Minnesota, followed by a discussion led by campus staff/faculty on this topic. “This groundbreaking exhibition aims to build a greater understanding of the importance of mental health and create a safe space for important conversations about mental illness. Hands-on experience through the Mental Health: Mind Matters exhibit brings you closer to the facts, feelings, and issues surrounding this topic that touches so many lives.” – from Science Museum Minnesota website

Attendees will meet at the Science Museum and will be provided free admission to the exhibit. Following the viewing, attendees will engage in a facilitated discussion of how this topic relates to Augsburg University and our students.

Sad News About a Colleague

It is with deep sadness that I write to share the news that Michelle Nies passed away from cancer on August 9. Despite her illness, Michelle remained committed to her job and led by example. She was a strong champion of the work her staff does to create the best physical environment for our students, faculty and staff. Her positive approach to life was evident and has impacted us all.

For the past five years, Michelle served the Augsburg community first as the Custodial Services Supervisor and later as the Custodial Services Manager. Michelle also served on staff senate for two years and participated on a variety of committees during her time at Augsburg.

For many years, she was an active board member of the MN chapter of the International Executive Housekeepers Association. In 2017, Michelle received her bachelors degree from Metro State University. However, her biggest source of pride was her son, Christopher, who is a student at Augsburg and on the Dean’s List.

We are grateful for Michelle’s many contributions to the Augsburg community. Our heartfelt prayers go out to Michelle’s husband, Paul, her son Christopher, and her extended family.

The funeral service will be at 10 AM Saturday, August 18 at Roseville Lutheran Church, 1215 W. Roselawn Avenue. Visitation will be from 9-10 AM prior to the service at church.

Augsburg will also have a gathering for a time of remembrance in the coming month. Additional details will be shared as soon as they become available.

The academic year is basically around the corner, which means kiddos–and young adults–are starting to get excited (and maybe a little nervous) for their first day back at school.

To kick off the academic year, Augsburg Total Wellness is sponsoring a School Supply Drive to feel good, by doing good. All donations will be delivered to People Serving People. This non-profit organization is located in Minneapolis. As the largest and most comprehensive, family-focused homeless shelter in Minnesota, your donations will have a huge impact in our community. Nobel Peace Prize Forum Volunteer Opportunities

This years theme is the Paradox of Water and the Paradox of Peace. Beatrice Fihn of ICAN will be on campus as a keynote speaker and we will also be exploring the peace process in Colombia under President Juan Manuel Santos.

Nobel Peace Prize Forum Minneapolis

Join us for the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Forum Minneapolis September 13-15, 2018.

The achievements of two Nobel Peace Prize laureates will be honored and celebrated: Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).

The program will explore the tensions between conflict and reconciliation, justice and forgiveness, hope and fear—paradoxes both laureates have successfully navigated over the last few years.

16th Annual Redeemer Block Party

16th Annual Block Party in the Harrison Neighborhood, North Minneapolis
An annual gathering promoting community, health, and fun

Everyone from throughout the Metro is invited to the 16th Annual Block Party on August 15, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. hosted by Redeemer Lutheran Church. The Party will be at Redeemer, 1800 Glenwood Avenue, Minneapolis. Join us for free, delicious foods including items hot off the grill, produce from the community garden, fresh roasted corn, homemade pizza from the Harrison neighborhood outdoor bread oven, ice cream and cotton candy. Enjoy a wide variety of live local entertainment including Zumba and music, fun for children including a bounce house, dunk tank, face painting, Spin to Win school supplies, etc. and activities for every age, all individuals, and entire families. There also will be many displays from local organizations including health care providers, community groups, an ambulance, and a fire truck.

Students who live on campus and are eligible to vote may vote in Minnesota elections and the Minneapolis precinct where Augsburg is located. Augsburg has provided the City of Minneapolis Board of Elections the list of resident students and Minnesota has same-day voter registration.

A theft occurred on campus Thursday, August 9th, 2018

On Thursday, August 9th, 2018 at approximately 7:00pm, a backpack was stolen from Oren Gateway Center. The theft was reported to Public Safety and we want to notify the community of the occurrence.

The Augsburg University Department of Public Safety seeks to issue timely alerts and advisories as required by federal law in order to provide the Augsburg community with information to increase the safety of people and property. These timely notices provide information available to Public Safety at the time the alert or advisory is issued which may include limited suspect or other information. If you have information related to crimes on Augsburg’s campus, please contact the Department of Public Safety at 612-330-1717.

Crime Alerts and Advisories are distributed for incidents that occurred on, or in areas immediately adjacent to, university property. Alerts may be distributed to all students, staff, and faculty, or they may be distributed to a localized area of the University if it is determined that the threat is specific to that particular area. Alerts may be posted in 8×11″ frames near campus building entrances, sent by e-mail, posted in A-Mail, and posted in the News & Announcements page of our website.

You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!

-Trust Your Instincts – If you sense trouble, get away

-Be Observant and Aware – Remain alert, be aware of your surroundings, observe the other people around you. Know who is around you. Be alert for suspicious behavior (e.g. a person wearing a long coat in the middle of summer).

-Walk Confidently and Do Not Make Yourself a Target – Robbers are looking for an easy target. Keep your head up and eyes alert and walk at a steady pace. Do not walk while looking at your phone and avoid carrying lots of packages or other belongings. Walk in groups whenever possible.

-If You are Robbed – Do your best to stay calm and remember: safety first! Follow the robber’s directions, but do not volunteer more than asked for. If you have to move, tell the robber what you are doing and why. Try to get a good look at the robber so you can describe them later. Give the robber time to leave and note the direction they travel.

-After a Robbery – CALL DPS OR THE POLICE IMMEDIATELY. Try to recall as much as you can about the robber including physical description, clothing, speech and mannerisms.

-Notify DPS of any concerning or suspicious activity immediately.

Open invitation for anyone curious about digital scholarship* (DS) to gather on Wednesday, August 15 from 1- 2 PM. Location: Lindell 202

Possible topics:

1. What is digital scholarship? How is it different from traditional scholarship?
2. What is the difference between “digital humanities” and “digital scholarship”?
3. What types of digital scholarship work is already happening on campus?
4. What ideas do you have for digital scholarship projects? Are any of them interdisciplinary? Do they have the potential to reach beyond the boundaries of the campus?
5. What tools and resources are available to the Augsburg community for creating these types of projects?
6. What DS examples might serve as useful resources for your courses?
7. What marketable skills could students gain from working on DS projects?

Lindell Library is withdrawing hundreds of videos from its VHS collection. These are titles that have not been checked out a single time in the last 5 years (most have not been checked out in the past 10+ years). If you still own a VCR and are interested, please help yourself to any of our discarded titles – they are on display in the Learning Commons through Friday.

We also have hundreds of bookends that could use a good home and these are on a table near the VHS cassettes. The bookends are all off white in color, metal with a magnetic base to hold them in place, and measure 5″ deep x 9″ high. To kick off the academic year, Augsburg Total Wellness is sponsoring a School Supply Drive to feel good, by doing good. All donations will be delivered to People Serving People. This non-profit organization is located in Minneapolis. As the largest and most comprehensive, family-focused homeless shelter in Minnesota, your donations will have a huge impact in our community. 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Forum: Great Opportunity for Students

With the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Forum fast approaching (September 14th-15th), now is the time to start thinking about how it can fit into class curriculum and syllabi! We hope that professors are encouraging their students to attend the Forum, as classes will be at the Forum on September 14th. We will have two Nobel laureates presenting and in attendance this year, Beatrice Fihn (ICAN, 2017) and Peter Agre (Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 2003 and an Augsburg alumnus).
In the past, professors have given students extra credit for attending workshops/sessions and writing about their experience.

This years theme is the Paradox of Water and the Paradox of Peace. Beatrice Fihn of ICAN will be on campus as a keynote speaker and we will also be exploring the peace process in Colombia under President Juan Manuel Santos.

Student Employment Process

Fall semester is fast approaching and the first day of student employment for the academic year is September 9th! If you are planning on having students working during the academic year, please be sure to review the information below regarding student positions.

Steps to follow when hiring a student worker for 2018-2019
1) Students returning into a position they held previously will only need a Student Employment Hire Form submitted through Hirezon/Interview Exchange. The effective date should be 9/9/2018.
2) Students working this summer, their job will end effective 9/8/2018 because they need to move to a school year position. You will need to complete the Student Employment Hire Form for these students too.
3) Any new position will need to be posted through Human Resources to the internal student jobs board. Student Requisitions can be submitted though Hirezon/Interview Exchange. Once it’s submitted, we will post the position online. Hiring managers will be able to view applications in real time through the system.
4) When you’ve selected a student to hire, complete the Student Employment Hire Form through Hirezon/Interview Exchange. Students, who have never worked on campus before, will need to fill out new hire paperwork, including a background check. HR sends out the new hire paperwork and background check to the student once the Student Employment Hire Form is submitted. Students cannot start work prior to that paperwork completion and they are authorized to work.

Open invitation for anyone curious about digital scholarship* (DS) to gather on Wednesdays, August 8 & 15 from 1- 2 PM. Location: Lindell 202

Possible topics:

1. What is digital scholarship? How is it different from traditional scholarship?
2. What is the difference between “digital humanities” and “digital scholarship”?
3. What types of digital scholarship work is already happening on campus?
4. What ideas do you have for digital scholarship projects? Are any of them interdisciplinary? Do they have the potential to reach beyond the boundaries of the campus?
5. What tools and resources are available to the Augsburg community for creating these types of projects?
6. What DS examples might serve as useful resources for your courses?
7. What marketable skills could students gain from working on DS projects?
