Participants Aged 60+ Needed for Paid Psychology Experiment

We are seeking eligible participants who are 60 years of age or older to participate in a facial perception study on campus this summer. Participants will have their eye movements monitored by a specialized camera while making judgments about images of human faces. The study is expected to take 30 minutes, and eligible participants will receive $10 USD as compensation. Norway and USA’s Constitutions: A Historic Perspective

Augsburg University’s, Norway Hub, in partnership with the Royal Norwegian Honorary Consulate General, will host the following seminar, Historic Perspectives on Norway and USA’s Constitutions, on Tuesday, May 29, from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. in Oren Gateway Center 100.
We invite you all to register for this free event that will provide a historic perspective on the two constitutions including shared influences and legacies. Speakers are Bård Thorheim, political advisor to the Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as Bård Frydenlund, historian and director at Eidsvoll 1814.

For the fiscal year-end close on May 31, 2018, it is important that all expenses, including equipment, supplies, travel and services rendered during the fiscal year 2018 are properly recorded and accrued as part of the year-end accounting close. In order to assure a “clean” year-end close, the following documents need to be submitted in a timely fashion as noted below.

Invoices, Expense Reports and Payment Authorization Forms

Please submit invoices, related to equipment, supplies, and services received on or before May 31, 2018 by Monday, June 11, 2018. All invoices need to have proper coding and approvals. Please email invoices to accountspayable@augsburg.edu or drop them off at the Science Building Suite 148 to Deb Blaschko, Accounts Payable.

Approve and code invoices in Agresso through the AP Paperless process for May 2018. You will receive a system email if you have an invoice task.

Jeremy Garcia is a faculty member in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Sociocultural Studies at the University of Arizona. He is a member of the Hopi/Tewa Tribes of Arizona. He was an Assistant Professor in the School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). He was also an Endowed Professor of the Electa Quinney Institute for American Indian Education at UWM. His research focuses on culturally responsive curriculum, pedagogy, teacher education, and family and community engagement among Indigenous education. Grounded in critical indigenous research methodologies, his previous research analyzed curriculum and pedagogy in Indigenous education through an interactive process with Hopi and Tewa educators. His recent research examined how Indigenous parents and educators contextualize the process and experience of engaging with opportunities to collaborate with educators in a schooling context located in an urban setting in the Midwest. He continues to support tribal communities, educators and programs on curriculum development that is grounded in Indigenous knowledge systems, such as the Hopi Kuuyi (Water) Curriculum and the Hopi Natwani (traditional farming) curriculum in Arizona. He has experience as an elementary school teacher and parent involvement coordinator on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Reservation, in Arizona. He is a member of the editorial board for the Mellon Tribal College Research Journal and a board member of the Hopi Education Endowment Fund.

Summer Campus Projects

• I-94 sound wall upgrade work has begun on the West side of campus, work on walls began on 20th Ave and will continue to Lot L. This project is expected to be completed mid-July. Parking will be affected in areas along the project.
• Kennedy Center Athletic offices on 2nd floor are being remodeled to add several new offices. Work is expected to be completed by May 31.
• Ice Arena remodel project: Both ice surfaces are being replaced. This project is underway and will be continuing until October 15. The North portion of Lot L is being utilized to stage dirt and equipment.
• Building signage upgrade projects are being done outside of Kennedy, Music Building, Christensen Center, Oren Gateway and the Foss Center. There may be some temporary sidewalk access problems around the projects as they progress.

Summer Yoga

Good Morning. I will be teaching yoga at Augsburg this summer until June 27. Please join us on Wednesdays from 12:15–1 p.m. in Si-Melby 128.
We will practice flowing breath to movement, staying in the present moment, and challenging our bodies through different poses during this 45 minute yoga practice. Mats will be available if you do not have your own mat. Open to all students, staff, faculty, and any others part of the Augsburg community. Creating an Inclusive Campus (CIC) workshop – May 10

This workshop will engage participants in reflecting on and exploring bias and the impact of bias in their work and teaching at Augsburg. The featured facilitator is Nehrwr Abdul-Wahid, One Ummah Consulting. Nehrwr will discuss bias and how it impacts and plays out among students, faculty, staff, and administrators. Staff and faculty panelists will share short stories about how they have worked to minimize bias in their interactions with students, course offerings, curricular content, policies, and programs. Participants will also receive an overview of recent bias incidents reports submitted by Augsburg students and will have time to discuss with colleagues in small groups, and continue the conversation over lunch.

Do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write / work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat. Jess established a tradition of allowing faculty and academic staff time away from campus to focus entirely on scholarship. There is no schedule for this retreat – it is simply time and space to work on scholarship. The Provost and the Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat. We ask that you commit to being present on all three days of the event. Our time begins at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday and ends at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. Space is limited to full-time faculty members.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University which provides academic competitive debate programming to 750 middle and high school students in the Twin Cities. Spring is the Somali Debate Initiative season, and we need judges!

We are seeking members of the Somali community to judge our Somali Debate Initiative students. Judges watch rounds, determine the winner, and provide feedback so students may improve their communication skills. No experience? Don’t worry. We’ll train you!

Judges are paid $55 per tournament.

Moodle Gradebook Reminder

As we approach the end of the term, ensuring the accuracy of your Moodle Gradebook becomes even more important than usual. Please be advised that by default, only non-empty grades in the Moodle Gradebook are aggregated, so if a student hasn’t submit work, entering a zero (or other minimum score) will ensure their missing work is reflected in their course total. If students have not submitted an assignment, instructors need to insert a 0 (rather than leaving the place blank) to affect the final grade. There is a quick way to add zeros for all students who haven’t already been given a grade for a particular activity–see http://go.augsburg.edu/bulkzero. If you need help with your Gradebook, please contact your LFC.

AugSTEM Scholars Program: Application Deadline May 15, 2018

Applications are now open for the 2018-19 AugSTEM Scholars Program.

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of $5,000, $7,500 and $10,000 per student per year (differences in award amounts correspond to levels of financial need). Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:

-Enrolled full-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, chemistry, computer science,
environmental studies, mathematics, or physics)
-Within 5 semesters of graduating as of Fall 2018
-Major GPA of 3.0 or higher
-U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
-Demonstrated financial need via FAFSA

Application deadline: May 15, 2018 at midnight.

The Homework Help Program at Trinity Congregation (here in Cedar Riverside) will be losing most of their Augsburg after-school tutors now that the semester has ended. They are looking for Augsburg staff and faculty who might want to spend a few hours each week (until mid June) assisting youth with their homework. It’s a fun way to get to know young people in our neighborhood. Staff can use Community Service time for this.

Hennepin County Commissioner Candidates’ Forum to bring the debate on protecting immigrant families in Hennepin County to the forefront of this November’s election. Despite their low profile, the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners oversees Hennepin County’s $2 billion annual budget and there are multiple seats up for election! Especially given the discouraging state of federal immigration policy, there’s a lot that can and must be done at the county level to protect immigrant families in our community from deportation. Come learn about what these candidates are willing to do to help make our county a safe place for all and ensure that this important issue receives the attention it deserves.

“From Microinequities to Inclusion” is a hybrid, group-format e-learning workshop that provides an introduction to the concept of microinequities: small, often subtle expressions of bias and exclusion. Relevant to employees of all levels, participation in this workshop can positively impact all internal and external interactions. Participants explore microinequities across national cultures as well as cultures related to gender, ethnicity, language, generations, and sexual orientation, and will learn how to identify and respond to specific scenarios. The Homework Help Program atTrinity Congregation (here in Cedar Riverside) will be losing most of their Augsburg after-school tutors now that the semester has ended. They are looking for Augsburg staff and faculty who might want to spend a few hours each week (until mid June) assisting youth with their homework. It’s a fun way to get to know young people in our neighborhood. Staff can use Community Service time for this.

Auggie Wins a Prestigious Boren Award

Sophomore Abdulkadir Sharif, who is double majoring in International Relations and Politics and is a TRIO/SSS Promise Scholar, just received the prestigious Boren Award Scholarship under the African Flagship Initiative Program. Through this award, Abdul will spend 8 weeks this summer with a cohort of learners studying Swahili at the University of Florida, followed by 4 months of intensive Swahili language study and cultural immersion in Tanzania. All of his expenses are paid and he will earn 24 credits.

Boren is established to teach American students less commonly taught languages and cultures in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad. After graduation, Abdul will spend at least one year of paid employment in the federal government. He would like to work for the U.S. State Department. Boren recipients receive Schedule A hiring authority, which gives them preference when applying to federal positions.
Boren Scholarships can be for a 6 months to a year of study abroad or can be an 8-week summer study abroad if you are a STEM major.

Holly Kundel Named 2018 Goldwater Scholar

We are excited to announce that junior biology major Holly Kundel has been recognized as a 2018 Goldwater Scholar. Kundel, who is also pursuing minors in environmental studies and mathematics, has been involved with research at Augsburg since the summer after her first year when she worked with Dr. Emily Schilling on a project related to the Canada Darner dragonfly. She is also a member of Tri-Beta, the Augsburg Honors Program, and Campus Ministry.

The Goldwater Scholarship will provide tuition assistance for Kundel’s senior year of undergraduate study and set her apart in her future graduate school applications. She aspires to earn a PhD in environmental biology, focusing specifically freshwater ecosystems and the impact of climate change on these systems, including pollution prevention and ecosystem restoration. “I believe that research on freshwater ecosystems is important because freshwater is a limited resource, and it is a resource that humans and other animals rely on for survival,” writes Kundel.

1280 of the top STEM undergraduates from around the country applied, and only 211 were awarded scholarships. Congratulations to Holly on this prestigious recognition!

Five students receive Fulbright awards, one named alternate

7 Augsburg seniors were named Fulbright Semi-Finalists this year! 5 were granted an award and 1 named an Alternate.

Kaylee Gueltzow (English Secondary Education & German): Kaylee will be an ETA in Germany where she also plans to organize a book club to spark conversation about the U.S.

Lyle Nyberg (Biology, Chemistry, & Mathematics): Lyle was named an Alternate to Zambia. Lyle applied to do research on malaria transmission at the Southern and Central Africa International Center of Excellence for Malaria Research.

Maddy Oswood (Spanish & Mathematics): Maddy will be an ETA in Spain where she also hopes to start an after-school art club where students can learn about both American and Spanish art.

Jubilee Prosser (Biology): Jubilee will be conducting public health research investigating the barriers to a sense of ownership of at-home water purification technologies in Kenya. She also plans to volunteer at the Maua Methodist Hospital in hygiene and water education for kids.

Blair Stewig (Biology): Blair will be conducting research on colorectal cancer at the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Poland and will also shadow physicians and volunteer at the Maria Skłodowska Curie Memorial Cancer Centre.

Abby Tetzlaff (English): Abby will be an ETA in Germany. She currently teaches an English Language Learning class with MN Literacy Council’s Open Door, and in Germany she hopes to initiate an English-language conversation table open to older students and adults.

Jossel Franco (History): Jossel was named a Semi-Finalist for an ETA to Bulgaria. Though she will not be doing a Fulbright, Jossel received the Puente Cultural Services and Teaching Abroad Grant to teach English in Ecuador. She will be doing TEFL training, working at the CEDEI language institute, and volunteering as an English tutor.

Applying to graduate school this fall or fall 2019? Most masters and doctoral programs, as well as some health professional schools, require the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) for admission. GRE Prep is offered this summer on campus through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity. You’ll learn the most effective ways tackle the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing sections on the GRE.

The course meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30-8 PM for four and a half weeks (May 14th – June 18th). The cost is only $125, which includes the official GRE test-prep book and a 6-month subscription to the online study tool, Magoosh; this is a fraction of the cost when compared to similar classroom GRE prep courses offered by Kaplan or the Princeton Review who charge over $1,000.

New this year, students can also earn a full-refund scholarship! Those who attend 9 of the 10 classes (including the final practice test), will receive a full refund for the course!

The Norway Hub at Augsburg University was recently notified that Bård Ludvig Thorheim, the Political Adviser to Norway’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ine Eriksen Søreide, will be visiting Minneapolis and other parts of the Midwest at the end of May. The Norwegian Consulate reached out to see if there is any interest for faculty and/or staff at Augsburg University to host him for a student seminar during his visit.

As you can see from his resume, he has deep experience in the field of foreign affairs and wish to speak on the history behind the Norwegian constitution as well as Norwegian American History.

Doug has many years experience in facilities management and commercial real estate services. More recently he has led facilities at Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota and RESOURCE, Inc. in St. Paul.

Doug has a bachelors degree from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota and is a Certified Property Manager (CPM) and Real Property Administrator (RPA). He is also a past board member of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities and Campfire USA.

Use your Spanish skills to make a difference! Judge Spanish Debate. No prior experience needed.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a nonprofit of Augsburg University. We provide debate programming to over 750 students in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, including our nearly 100 Spanish Debate League students.

We’re looking for debate judges for 3 tournaments this spring:

Wednesday April 19th – 3:30 to 7:30 PM
Wednesday May 3rd – 3:30 to 7:30 PM
Wednesday May 16th – 3:30 to 7:30 PM

Judges will observe rounds conducted completely in Spanish, determine winners for each round, and provide comments to help students improve their reading, critical thinking and Spanish language skills.

Participation in debate helps students improve their academic skills, including reading comprehension and critical thinking, and increases their confidence. Be a part of creating these outcomes for our Spanish Debate League students!

Music Therapy in China: Summer study abroad program

MUSIC THERAPY IN CHINA: CHONGQING BURN CAMP

Music therapists benefit greatly from exploring the evolution of music from one generation to the next, the way in which music is integrated into everyday life, and its role in health, healing, and well-being in China. Through visits to hospitals, clinics, musical venues, conservatories, and community organizations that provide health related care, students experience the interplay of music and healing practices in China. Students also engage in direct dialogue with Chinese music therapists and other rehabilitation therapists. The program allows participants to reflect on their own musical roots, and to discover how their own musical preferences have developed based on cultural experiences. We will also visit other locations of interest such as The Great Wall, Old-Town Beijing, Dazu Rock Carvings, Yangtze River Cruise and more.

River Semester Fall 2018 – Apply Now

Students interested in a once-in- a-lifetime opportunity to travel the length of the Mississippi River as part of a full semester of courses should check out Augsburg’s River Semester program for Fall 2018. Students in the program will spend 100 days paddling from the Twin Cities, to St. Louis, Memphis, and beyond, before returning to the Twin Cities in December.

Paid Psychology Study Participants Needed

I, Alexis Nagle, am an undergraduate student conducting URGO-funded research through the Augsburg University Psychology Department, under the mentorship of Dr. Stacy Freiheit. The study I am conducting focuses on the impact of sexual assault disclosure on the friends of sexual assault survivors among college students.

You are being invited to participate in this study because of your enrollment as an undergraduate student at Augsburg University. If you elect to participate in this study, you will be asked to respond to a 15-20 minute confidential & anonymous questionnaire about attitudes & experiences surrounding sexual assault. Your participation in this study will yield either course credit for PSY105 & PSY215 or $5 compensation.

This survey deals with sensitive topics, such as sexual assault & violence. If you choose to participate in this study, you have the right to withdraw or skip any questions at any time without affecting affect your current or future relations with Augsburg University or the researcher. The indirect benefits are that the results of this study may allow for a better understanding of the effects of sexual assault. A direct benefit is that you will receive course credit or compensation for completing this survey.

The results of this study will be disseminated in a final paper & presented to the faculty in the Psychology department at Augsburg University. The results also may be published in a professional journal or presented at local, regional, national, or international conferences via a poster or oral presentation. In any publication or conference presentation, I will not include any information that will make it possible to identify participants. All data will be stored on a password-protected computer and only my advisor & I will have access to it.

Mexica New Year: This family-friendly, cultural festival celebrates and honors the diverse beautiful cultures of indigenous peoples of the Twin Cities. Hosted by Indigenous Roots in partnership with local dance and drum circles, artists, community organizations and businesses.

Middle school students will debate education reform, and we’re looking for caring students to judge them on their critical thinking, argumentation, and public speaking. No debate experience? No problem – we’ll train you. Judges also enjoy free pizza.

March 13th: What You Should Know About Social Security

In a one-of-kind, special event: Rhonda Whiteneck, Public Affairs Specialist with the Social Security Administration will present a comprehensive look at Social Security benefits and the role they play in retirement. The presentation will include a look at how your age at retirement affects your benefits, who else is eligible to receive a benefit, and how you enroll. In addition, Rhonda will discuss Medicare Parts A, B, C and D, touching on penalties, creditable drug coverage and how Medicare affects HSA participation.

Not sure if you should attend? Are you planning to retire – soon or sometime in the future? Do you have parents, friends, etc. who will be retiring and could use a few pointers? You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!

-Trust Your Instincts – If you sense trouble, get away

-Be Observant and Aware – Remain alert, be aware of your surroundings, observe the other people around you. Know who is around you. Be alert for suspicious behavior (e.g. a person wearing a long coat in the middle of summer).

-Walk Confidently and Do Not Make Yourself a Target – Robbers are looking for an easy target. Keep your head up and eyes alert and walk at a steady pace. Do not walk while looking at your phone and avoid carrying lots of packages or other belongings. Walk in groups whenever possible.

-If You are Robbed – Do your best to stay calm and remember: safety first! Follow the robber’s directions, but do not volunteer more than asked for. If you have to move, tell the robber what you are doing and why. Try to get a good look at the robber so you can describe them later. Give the robber time to leave and note the direction they travel.

-After a Robbery – CALL DPS OR THE POLICE IMMEDIATELY. Try to recall as much as you can about the robber including physical description, clothing, speech and mannerisms.

-Notify DPS of any concerning or suspicious activity immediately.

Mexico: Summer study abroad program

Earn language, Art, Keystone, or Internship credit in Mexico this summer:
AUGSBURG CGEE IN MEXICO: LANGUAGE AND CULTURE IN MEXICO

CGEE in Mexico offers five 3 1/2 week sessions (blocks) focusing on Spanish language and Mexican culture in which students can take one course per session, and take up to five courses throughout the summer. This community-based program includes homestays, a trip to Mexico City, optional weekend excursions, and numerous guest speakers designed to help students learn about history, culture, and contemporary struggles for peace, justice, and human rights.

Spanish language courses at all levels beginning to advanced, as well as specialized Spanish courses in Business Spanish, Spanish for Ministry, and Spanish for Healthcare Professionals can be combined with internships in those fields to create a truly customized summer experience.

2018 PROGRAM DATES
The summer is organized into five blocks, you may take anywhere from one to five blocks. Students who wish to take an internship must enroll for at least two blocks:
Block I: May 2-27
Block II: May 23-June 17 (KEY 490 offered only during Block II)
Block III: June 13-July 8
Block IV: July 5-29
Block V: July 25-August 19

Applications are due April 1st, 2018

Scholarships are available!

Students eligible for Summer Pell Grants, may apply the summer grant funds to this program if they attend at least two Blocks.
