Calling Public Speakers, Aspiring Voice Actors – Build Your Portfolio and Help Twin Cities Students

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to more than 1,200 Twin Cities students. We’re seeking remote volunteers for the 2023 Spring Semester!

We know that one of the reasons debate helps students improve their literacy is that students are engaging with all four foundational skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Because many of the students we work with are English language learners, one of the most powerful tools we have to help rookie debaters learn is auditory supplements to our written packets. With these recordings, students at all skill levels will be able to follow along with the text as they read, learn evidence while doing other tasks like doing chores or riding the bus, and rapidly improve their literacy and information retention.

How You Can Help

We are seeking volunteers to record our evidence packets at a conversational pace (120 words per minute). Help us record evidence for the following programs:

• East African Debate: Record nonfiction evidence about a topic central to the East African Debate community in the Twin Cities (TBD), written in English. Recordings needed by March 1st.
• Financial Literacy Leadership Debates: Record nonfiction evidence regarding the advantages and disadvantages of banking at a large national institution versus a small, local credit union. Recordings needed by April 1st.

Volunteers need to be able to speak slowly, clearly, and with energy. No special recording equipment is required, although we do ask that you record in a quiet space with minimal distractions. We can edit your audio for you.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University provides academic competitive debate to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities. We’re seeking volunteers for the spring season!

Middle school debate judging shifts are now open! No experience? No problem. We will train you. You just need to be able to pass a background check. Debate judges listen to students, provide feedback for them, and choose the winner. In the process, you’ll help students improve their public speaking, argumentation, and academic skills.

Please note that the timing for each shift is 3:30-7:00 PM CST and they are scheduled to be held in person in the Twin Cities Metro (location TBD).

Agresso and Records and Registration Upgrade and Downtime: March 10-12

We will be upgrading Agresso the weekend of March 10-12. Agresso powers Records and Registration, Human Resources, Finance and Payroll.

This means the following services will be offline Friday March 10 (after 5 PM) until Monday March 13:
* Records and Registration (registration, class rosters, grades)
* Agresso Web / Administrative Self Service (paystubs, W2s)
* Agresso desktop (student record lookup, financial reporting, HR records)

With the upgrade the product name “Agresso” will be retired from the software and will be instead branded “Unit4 ERP.” Unit4 is the company that owns the Agresso product.

After the upgrade the employee web Administrative Self service (paystubs, W2s) will have a modern look-and-feel. Documentation provided by HR and IT will be updated soon after.

Social Security webinar

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

Join CMAH for our first in person African Heritage Day on the Hill post pandemic. This event will feature remarks from lawmakers on their current 2023 legislative plans. This event will also have information for attendees on how to connect with lawmakers on policy issues they may have as well as specific information on how to find their representatives.

The theme for the 2023 African Heritage Day on the Hill is abundance. We want to ground our community partners, elected officials, and attendees in the richness of the history of the African Heritage community in Minnesota. We are celebrating increased numbers of African Heritage residents across the state, more African Heritage individuals in leadership positions across industries, more African Heritage individuals elected to public office, and the continued outpour of tangible and intangible resources towards community engagement, entrepreneurship, spiritual healing, and activism. Join us for Day at the Capitol 2023 where you can advocate for increased funding for education. Your legislators need to hear from you about the Minnesota State Grant program and other causes that are important to you.

What happens at Day at the Capitol?
You’ll attend a Minnesota State Grant advocacy and lobbying training with student advocates from Augsburg and other Minnesota private colleges. Then you’ll meet with legislators (we’ll make appointments for you in advance) and have lunch at the Capitol. The Minnesota Private College Council will host a Q&A session with public policy experts and policymakers and will provide everything you need to be a successful advocate.

The group from Augsburg will take the light rail to and from the Capitol together. There will also be an optional pizza night on Tuesday, February 28 to meet other advocates from Augsburg and get ready for your day of civic engagement.

As a judge, you work as a team with 2-3 other judges to review projects and select the strongest to advance to the next level of the competition. It’s a great way to connect with High School students in Minnesota, meet other educators, and really just pretty dang fun (and there are good snacks).

Minnesotans made their voices heard by electing the first pro-reproductive freedom state legislature in decades. But the work isn’t done, now we must show up louder and stronger than ever to push decision makers to pass bold legislation protecting and expanding abortion access in Minnesota.

Our Leadership Agenda for Abortion Access creates a clear path, but legislators need to hear from you that reproductive rights, health, and justice is still a priority for you. On lobby day, you will have the opportunity to ask your representative to:
– Repeal Minnesota’s Unnecessary Restrictions to Abortion
– Protect Patients from Post-Roe Attacks
– Ensure Equitable and Affordable Access to Abortion Care

You will get the resources and training you need to be equipped to talk to your representatives. You’ll also get to hear from leaders and healthcare providers across the state who are fighting for reproductive freedom. The day will culminate with a rally in the rotunda.

Are you an artist or writer who wants to have your work published? Well, here’s your last chance to submit your art and/or writing to be published in our magazine.
Thó Wiŋ Magazine is curating our annual literary and arts publication. This opportunity is open to anyone and everyone at Augsburg: students, faculty, staff, and anyone else in the Augsburg community so tell your friends to submit something too. We accept art of all kinds and skill levels: poetry, fiction, nonfiction, screenwriting/playwriting, other prose, visual arts including painting, photography, graphic design, drawing, multi-media, photographs of sculptures or ceramics. We can even create and print QR codes for short films, animation, video, or music. If your kind of art isn’t listed, submit it anyway! We like arts from all cultures and all people. If you create art in another language, submit that too (but maybe include a translation with it to make it more accessible to us English monolinguals). We especially encourage artists with marginalized identities to submit their art so we can uplift your voices! Thó Wiŋ Magazine will put a printed book together and distribute on campus for free. You can submit up to five different works across any genre.

Generous Scholarship for Rising Juniors Interested in Public Service

The Voyager Scholarship for Public Service includes:
– Up to $50,000 in financial aid: Students will receive up to $25,000 per year in “last dollar” financial aid for their junior and senior years of college.
– Summer Voyage: Students will receive a $10,000 stipend and Airbnb credit to pursue a summer work-travel experience between their junior and senior year of college.
– Fall Summit: Each fall, students will be invited to a summit to help define and inspire their public service journey.
– Network of leaders: Throughout the program, students will be invited to an ongoing speaker series, giving them access to a network of leaders.
– 10-year travel stipend: After graduation, Airbnb will provide the students with a $2,000 Airbnb travel credit every year for 10 years, totaling $20,000. This will allow students to continue to broaden their horizons and forge new connections throughout their public service careers.

With the recent closing of the encampment in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood, the Afghan Cultural Society, located in a storefront on Cedar Avenue, is seeing more unsheltered individuals stopping in and asking for help. Cold weather gear is especially needed. To help the Afghan Cultural Society respond to this immediate need, Health Commons and the Sabo Center are collecting new or gently used hats, gloves, and coats. Handwarmers are also appreciated. Please place donations in the bin outside of the Nursing Department (first floor of Science Hall).

Recently, we have seen our neighbors displaced. Perhaps you know someone forced to move out due to the cost of living crisis, saw state troopers destroy tents at the Quarry encampment, or know a resident of the flooded Bell Loft apartments. We believe the Augsburg community should remain conscious of the severity of this issue.

Generous Scholarship for Rising Juniors Interested in Public Service

The Voyager Scholarship for Public Service includes:
– Up to $50,000 in financial aid: Students will receive up to $25,000 per year in “last dollar” financial aid for their junior and senior years of college.
– Summer Voyage: Students will receive a $10,000 stipend and Airbnb credit to pursue a summer work-travel experience between their junior and senior year of college.
– Fall Summit: Each fall, students will be invited to a summit to help define and inspire their public service journey.
– Network of leaders: Throughout the program, students will be invited to an ongoing speaker series, giving them access to a network of leaders.
– 10-year travel stipend: After graduation, Airbnb will provide the students with a $2,000 Airbnb travel credit every year for 10 years, totaling $20,000. This will allow students to continue to broaden their horizons and forge new connections throughout their public service careers.

Eligibility:
– Have four (4) semesters left as of Spring 2023
– Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0
– Demonstrate financial need
– Have demonstrated a commitment to public service

Looking for a Great Summer Job? URGO Summer Research Phase 1 Applications Due TONIGHT

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM: All disciplines welcome
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 15th – July 28th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 9th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research or creative activity is going on in your department!

In this program, girls and gender expansive youth learn about core financial literacy subjects through the fun, engaging, and competitive vehicle of debate. The topic this year involves the advantages and disadvantages of banking at a large national bank versus a local credit union.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, is seeking fluent Spanish speakers to serve as debate judges for our upcoming Spanish Debate League tournaments. These tournaments help middle and high school students build their Spanish fluency as well as public speaking skills, self confidence, and critical thinking. The topic this year involves Puerto Rico becoming a US State.

We will pay judges $55 per tournament. No debate experience is required, but Spanish fluency is. All judges will receive training. Judges are asked to listen to students speak, choose a winner, and provide written and verbal feedback at the end of the round.

Tournaments will take place in person, at locations in the Twin Cities Metro, on Thursday evenings throughout late March, April, and May:

Middle School Tournaments:

• May 11

Calling Public Speakers and Aspiring Voice Actors – Build Your Portfolio and Help Twin Cities Students

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to more than 1,200 Twin Cities students. We’re seeking remote volunteers for the 2023 Spring Semester!

We know that one of the reasons debate helps students improve their literacy is that students are engaging with all four foundational skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Because many of the students we work with are English language learners, one of the most powerful tools we have to help rookie debaters learn is auditory supplements to our written packets. With these recordings, students at all skill levels will be able to follow along with the text as they read, learn evidence while doing other tasks like doing chores or riding the bus, and rapidly improve their literacy and information retention.

How You Can Help

We are seeking volunteers to record our evidence packets at a conversational pace (120 words per minute). Help us record evidence for the following programs:

• East African Debate: Record nonfiction evidence about a topic central to the East African Debate community in the Twin Cities (TBD), written in English. Recordings needed by March 1st.
• Financial Literacy Leadership Debates: Record nonfiction evidence regarding the advantages and disadvantages of banking at a large national institution versus a small, local credit union. Recordings needed by April 1st.

Volunteers need to be able to speak slowly, clearly, and with energy. No special recording equipment is required, although we do ask that you record in a quiet space with minimal distractions. We can edit your audio for you.

Join us for Day at the Capitol 2023 where you can advocate for increased funding for education. Your legislators need to hear from you about the Minnesota State Grant program and other causes that are important to you.

What happens at Day at the Capitol?
You’ll attend a Minnesota State Grant advocacy and lobbying training with student advocates from Augsburg and other Minnesota private colleges. Then you’ll meet with legislators (we’ll make appointments for you in advance) and have lunch at the Capitol. The Minnesota Private College Council will host a Q&A session with public policy experts and policymakers and will provide everything you need to be a successful advocate.

The group from Augsburg will take the light rail to and from the Capitol together. There will also be an optional pizza night on Tuesday, February 28 to meet other advocates from Augsburg and get ready for your day of civic engagement.

Our Saviour’s Housing provides shelter, comfort, hope, and community for people who are
homeless. They serve over 650 people annually in our Emergency Shelter and Permanent
Supportive Housing programs. Please consider joining as a partner in our work!

Host Bingo for the residents in our Emergency Shelter. We provide the Bingo set; you provide
small prizes such as treats, gift cards, socks, or hygiene items. Bingo is a fun way for our
residents to relax and socialize in the evening.
● This opportunity works for 2-4 people of all ages.
● Bingo can be scheduled almost any evening, usually from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Serve breakfast or dinner for our 21 Emergency Shelter residents. Purchase, prepare, and serve the meal. Both weekday and weekend opportunities are available. This opportunity is best suited for groups of 3-4 people. All meal volunteers must be four
years of age or older.
● Breakfast is served at 7:00 a.m. and clean-up must be complete by 9:00 a.m.
● Dinner is served at 7:00 p.m. and clean-up is usually complete by 8:30 p.m.

Make sandwiches or bag lunches for us to hand out as Emergency Shelter residents leave for the day. You can make the sandwiches off-site at any time and drop them off at the shelter. This opportunity works well for groups of all sizes and ages.

Create cleaning kits for us to give as welcome gifts to new Permanent Supportive Housing
residents. Purchase and assemble all of the essentials for these formerly homeless residents to care for their new homes. Kits should include sponges, dish soap, laundry detergent, all-purpose cleaners, paper towels, etc. Please contact us for a complete list.

ample off-street parking.

Minnesotans made their voices heard by electing the first pro-reproductive freedom state legislature in decades. But the work isn’t done, now we must show up louder and stronger than ever to push decision makers to pass bold legislation protecting and expanding abortion access in Minnesota.

Our Leadership Agenda for Abortion Access creates a clear path, but legislators need to hear from you that reproductive rights, health, and justice is still a priority for you. On lobby day, you will have the opportunity to ask your representative to:
– Repeal Minnesota’s Unnecessary Restrictions to Abortion
– Protect Patients from Post-Roe Attacks
– Ensure Equitable and Affordable Access to Abortion Care

You will get the resources and training you need to be equipped to talk to your representatives. You’ll also get to hear from leaders and healthcare providers across the state who are fighting for reproductive freedom. The day will culminate with a rally in the rotunda.

Interfaith Just Peacemaking Workshop

The Interfaith Institute at Augsburg is hosting a monthly gathering to discuss and learn about the intersection of peacemaking, justice, and interfaith competencies.

Workshop led by the Interfaith Institute’s Executive Director, Najeeba Syeed.

Workshops are run as roundtables enabling participants to join as often as they like. Each session date will focus on a particular issue with some preparation/reading material integrated into the lessons. Participants will have the opportunity to build programs and projects for their own contexts and receive feedback from colleagues.

With the recent closing of the encampment in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood, the Afghan Cultural Society, located in a storefront on Cedar Avenue, is seeing more unsheltered individuals stopping in and asking for help. Cold weather gear is especially needed. To help the Afghan Cultural Society respond to this immediate need, Health Commons and the Sabo Center are collecting new or gently used hats, gloves, and coats. Handwarmers are also appreciated. Please place donations in the bin outside of the Nursing Department (first floor of Science Hall).

Wednesday, March 1, 2023 from 9:15 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Join us for Day at the Capitol 2023 where you can advocate for increased funding for education. Your legislators need to hear from you about the Minnesota State Grant program and other causes that are important to you.

What happens at Day at the Capitol?
You’ll attend a Minnesota State Grant advocacy and lobbying training with student advocates from Augsburg and other Minnesota private colleges. Then you’ll meet with legislators (we’ll make appointments for you in advance) and have lunch at the Capitol. The Minnesota Private College Council will host a Q&A session with public policy experts and policymakers and will provide everything you need to be a successful advocate.

The group from Augsburg will take the light rail to and from the Capitol together. There will also be an optional pizza night on Tuesday, February 28 to meet other advocates from Augsburg and get ready for your day of civic engagement.

Looking for a Great Summer Job? URGO Summer Research Phase 1 Applications Due TOMORROW

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM: All disciplines welcome
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 15th – July 28th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 9th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research or creative activity is going on in your department!

URGO Academic–Year Research Funds

URGO now has funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research. Research must be completed by May 23.

Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals immediately. The URGO Advisory Committee will review proposals on a rolling basis.

Generous Scholarship for Rising Juniors Interested in Public Service

The Voyager Scholarship for Public Service includes:
– Up to $50,000 in financial aid: Students will receive up to $25,000 per year in “last dollar” financial aid for their junior and senior years of college.
– Summer Voyage: Students will receive a $10,000 stipend and Airbnb credit to pursue a summer work-travel experience between their junior and senior year of college.
– Fall Summit: Each fall, students will be invited to a summit to help define and inspire their public service journey.
– Network of leaders: Throughout the program, students will be invited to an ongoing speaker series, giving them access to a network of leaders.
– 10-year travel stipend: After graduation, Airbnb will provide the students with a $2,000 Airbnb travel credit every year for 10 years, totaling $20,000. This will allow students to continue to broaden their horizons and forge new connections throughout their public service careers.

Eligibility:
– Have four (4) semesters left as of Spring 2023
– Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0
– Demonstrate financial need
– Have demonstrated a commitment to public service
– Plan to pursue a career in public service upon graduation
– Be a United States (US) citizen, US permanent resident, or DACA

100% Clean Energy Bill Signed Into Law in Minnesota

Last night, Governor Walz signed the 100% Clean Energy by 2040 bill into law. It requires Minnesota utilities to provide 100% carbon-free electricity to customers by 2040 taking great steps to combat climate change and expand clean energy jobs in the state. This is an exciting moment for Minnesota in furthering its climate action goals and has incredible potential to expedite Augsburg’s climate mitigation efforts.

I encourage you to read the Commentary piece on the legislation in the Minnesota Reformer. (https://minnesotareformer.com/2023/02/01/minnesota-college-students-write-on-the-urgency-of-the-legislatures-2040-climate-plan/) Augsburg senior and Environmental Studies major, Zoe Barany, was its co-author along with peers from universities across the state. They advocated for the very 100% Clean Energy legislation that Governor Walz signed into law. The fair is free and open to all students. Camp representatives from Christian camps are looking to hire students to work with youth. Jobs vary from camp counselors, activity instructors, kitchen help, etc. Housing and food are included, as well as, as a stipend. If interested, many representatives will interview you at the fair.

Are you an artist or writer who wants to have your work published? Well, here’s your last chance to submit your art and/or writing to be published in our magazine.
Thó Wiŋ Magazine is curating our annual literary and arts publication. This opportunity is open to anyone and everyone at Augsburg: students, faculty, staff, and anyone else in the Augsburg community so tell your friends to submit something too. We accept art of all kinds and skill levels: poetry, fiction, nonfiction, screenwriting/playwriting, other prose, visual arts including painting, photography, graphic design, drawing, multi-media, photographs of sculptures or ceramics. We can even create and print QR codes for short films, animation, video, or music. If your kind of art isn’t listed, submit it anyway! We like arts from all cultures and all people. If you create art in another language, submit that too (but maybe include a translation with it to make it more accessible to us English monolinguals). The Augsburg Pre-Physician Assistant Club (APPAC) is having their next general meeting TODAY during chapel time (1035-1105am) in Hagfors 106. We’ll be playing a fun game (with a chance to win a prize!) and going over lots of upcoming events.

We also invite you to watch the Virtual Pre-Health Workshops put on by URGO and Gustavus College. They are every Wed. in Feb., 630-730pm. Our club has reserved HC150 during these times if you would like to watch along with fellow members, and snacks will be provided! This event is an invitation to build community, foster collaboration, and create a more caring world through learning about religious/spiritual/worldview diversity, participating in enriching dialogue, and networking with exceptional interfaith leaders. Recipients of the Outstanding Staff Award provide exceptional service to others, work collaboratively across divisions or departments, demonstrate a clear commitment to equity and inclusion, and enhance the objectives of their department and the mission of Augsburg University through creativity, innovation, and hard work.

The Newcomer Award recognizes a staff person who has made a significant impact on campus life in a short amount of time. Staff who have been at Augsburg for two years or less (as of March 1, 2023) are eligible to receive this award.
Staff Senate will award five Outstanding Staff awards and one Newcomer award during the in-person event on March 22nd.

Christensen Scholars is one of two Public Leader Scholars programs being offered AY 2023. Christensen Scholars will be taught by Christensen Chair Jeremy Myers, and offers students a unique opportunity to explore topics of vocation, service, and how their Christian faith shapes them as leaders.

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

Music Therapy in South Korea, Summer Course – Apply by March 1

The Music Therapy in South Korea summer course is open to students studying Music Therapy , Music, Psychology, Biopsychology, Education, Social Work, Physician Assistant, Nursing, and other students who have a strong interest in the intersections of music, health, community, and culture. This will be a participatory and immersive program, and it also fulfills the Augsburg Experience requirement.

Applications for this program are due March 1.
