My name is Rayan Macalin. I am a senior social work major and am working on my honors thesis. I am conducting a research study on the relationship between
exposure to substance use among family and community members in childhood and substance use during adolescence in the Somali American community. I am asking participants to complete a brief, anonymous survey about their exposures to substance use in their childhood and their behaviors around substance use in their adolescence. Wednesday, March 1, 2023 from 9:15 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Join us for Day at the Capitol 2023 where you can advocate for increased funding for education. Your legislators need to hear from you about the Minnesota State Grant program and other causes that are important to you.

What happens at Day at the Capitol?
You’ll attend a Minnesota State Grant advocacy and lobbying training with student advocates from Augsburg and other Minnesota private colleges. Then you’ll meet with legislators (we’ll make appointments for you in advance) and have lunch at the Capitol. The Minnesota Private College Council will host a Q&A session with public policy experts and policymakers and will provide everything you need to be a successful advocate.

The group from Augsburg will take the light rail to and from the Capitol together. There will also be an optional pizza night on Tuesday, February 28 to meet other advocates from Augsburg and get ready for your day of civic engagement.

CTL/CWC Zoom Session: Supporting and Responding to Students in Distress

Our students are struggling with increasingly complex needs and demands, many of which can create barriers and challenges to academic success. Further, because faculty see their students regularly, they are often the first to notice that a student is struggling. This session will focus on helping faculty to identify students in distress by increasing awareness of signs of struggle. We will then share strategies and resources for supporting students when you notice they are struggling.

The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially Space Physics & Engineering, Mathematics, and Science/Mathematics Education.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2023 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…
are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Computer Science, pre-Engineering, or Mathematics/Science Education;
can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within their major area; and

“You’ve never heard anything quite like Joe Rainey’s avant-garde Pow Wow music.” – Pitchfork

Niineta, Joe Rainey’s debut album on 37d03d, is a landmark in modern Indigenous music. These are bold, electrifying songs that recontextualize the ancient Pow Wow sound in strange, new in-between places. Each note conveys a clear message, no matter the inflection: We’re still here. The songs that make up Niineta (translated from Ojibwe, meaning ‘Just Me’) start with Andrew Broder’s churning avant-garde beats, configured and hand-made to support Joe’s original melodies, tunes written from a lifetime of competitive Pow Wow singing and drum group archiving. All of this is embraced by and interwoven with celestial strings, arranged by Broder and William Brittelle, performed by “dream group” (The New York Times) Owls, giving Joe’s melodies an ecstatic lift. Visuals for the show will be provided by experimental filmmaker Isaac Gale, who has collaborated with Rainey, Broder, and Brittelle on multiple projects.

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

Fatigue Fighters Wellness Challenge

Free Trip to Holocaust Museum

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.

URGO Academic–Year Research Funds

URGO now has funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research. Research must be completed by May 23.

Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals immediately. The URGO Advisory Committee will review proposals on a rolling basis.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM: All disciplines welcome
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 15th – July 28th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 9th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research or creative activity is going on in your department!

Phillips Scholars create and test innovative ideas that address community problems — running their own summer programming. There’s support along the way, with the students coming together to develop their leadership skills and prepare for their projects. Scholars receive more than $9,000 in scholarships and stipends. Ten students from 15 eligible Minnesota private colleges and universities will be selected each year.

Applications are due February 24, 2023.

You’re eligible if you:
– Are enrolled full-time in the undergraduate program
– Demonstrate financial need
– Are a first-year, sophomore or junior in the spring of 2023
– Aspire to address a significant need within a particular community
– Demonstrate interest in civic engagement

Enhancing Instructor Presence: Audio Feedback
The microphone tool in Moodle allows you to add comments when grading, in the announcement forum, and anywhere you see the content editor toolbar. This type of delivery conveys tone more effectively than text. It is possible to record audio comments from the Moodle app on a phone as well, allowing one to move around while grading.

VoiceThread
Presentation material is often delivered in a one-way communication method (instructor to student). Consider VoiceThread as an alternative that can engage students through collaborative and interactive multimedia slideshows that support images, documents, and videos. Tenured Faculty Members Needed to Serve as New Faculty Mentors

The Faculty Development Program at Augsburg is launching a new Faculty Mentoring program for new (and new-ish) faculty members, and we’re looking for tenured faculty who are knowledgeable about how Augsburg “works” to provide mentoring! We’re looking for at least 11 mentors to “match” with our mentees – mostly first and second year assistant professors.

The basic requirements to be considered as a mentor are (1) you must be a current, tenured member of the Augsburg Faculty and (2) have a general understanding of how the University “works” beyond your department. If you are interested, please complete the short “Application of Interest” posted below no later than Monday, January 23rd (the form also contains more information). All selected members are required to attend Mentor Orientation on the afternoon of Thursday, January 26th.

CTL/CWC Zoom Session: Supporting and Responding to Students in Distress

Our students are struggling with increasingly complex needs and demands, many of which can create barriers and challenges to academic success. Further, because faculty see their students regularly, they are often the first to notice that a student is struggling. This session will focus on helping faculty to identify students in distress by increasing awareness of signs of struggle. We will then share strategies and resources for supporting students when you notice they are struggling.

The NASA Space Grant scholarship program supports the advancement of academically focused undergraduates seeking professional careers in the natural sciences, especially Space Physics & Engineering, Mathematics, and Science/Mathematics Education.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2023 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

Niineta, Joe Rainey’s debut album on 37d03d, is a landmark in modern Indigenous music. These are bold, electrifying songs that recontextualize the ancient Pow Wow sound in strange, new in-between places. Each note conveys a clear message, no matter the inflection: We’re still here. The songs that make up Niineta (translated from Ojibwe, meaning ‘Just Me’) start with Andrew Broder’s churning avant-garde beats, configured and hand-made to support Joe’s original melodies, tunes written from a lifetime of competitive Pow Wow singing and drum group archiving. All of this is embraced by and interwoven with celestial strings, arranged by Broder and William Brittelle, performed by “dream group” (The New York Times) Owls, giving Joe’s melodies an ecstatic lift. Visuals for the show will be provided by experimental filmmaker Isaac Gale, who has collaborated with Rainey, Broder, and Brittelle on multiple projects.

By vocation we mean the ways we are compelled, empowered, challenged, freed, and responsible to show up (individually and collectively) in ways that help our neighbors and neighborhoods thrive. We believe every individual and every institution experiences a vocational tug.

Augsburg University – as an institution – is committed to being an engaged neighbor with the Cedar-Riverside, Seward, and Phillips neighborhoods. Many would say this has always been central to Augsburg’s mission and identity, but our practices and frameworks for showing up as a compassionate and helpful neighbor have changed over time. URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM: All disciplines welcome
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 15th – July 28th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 9th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research or creative activity is going on in your department!

Free Trip to Holocaust Museum

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.

Queer and Trans Youth BIPOC Group at Reclaim

Local mental health support center (RECLAIM) is offering a BIPOC support group for individuals ages 18-25 who identify as LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC. The purpose of the group is to gather and build community; process and explore intersecting identities and experiences, culture, and heritage; unlearn dominant narratives while recognizing distinct BIPOC histories; and commit to personal and collective healing. Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

While in New Orleans, we will be partnering with Rebuilding New Orleans Together, an organization whose goal is to improve the quality of life of low-income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly, disabled, veterans, or single head of households with minor children. Tenured Faculty Members Needed to Serve as New Faculty Mentors

The Faculty Development Program at Augsburg is launching a new Faculty Mentoring program for new (and new-ish) faculty members, and we’re looking for tenured faculty who are knowledgeable about how Augsburg “works” to provide mentoring! We’re looking for at least 11 mentors to “match” with our mentees – mostly first and second year assistant professors.

The basic requirements to be considered as a mentor are (1) you must be a current, tenured member of the Augsburg Faculty and (2) have a general understanding of how the University “works” beyond your department. If you are interested, please complete the short “Application of Interest” posted below no later than Monday, January 23rd (the form also contains more information). All selected members are required to attend Mentor Orientation on the afternoon of Thursday, January 26th.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2023 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.
Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $2000 to support students who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship program.

Volunteer as a Middle School Debate Judge!

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University provides academic competitive debate to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities. We’re seeking volunteers for the spring season!

Middle school debate judging shifts are now open! No experience? No problem. We will train you. You just need to be able to pass a background check. Debate judges listen to students, provide feedback for them, and choose the winner. In the process, you’ll help students improve their public speaking, argumentation, and academic skills.

Please note that the timing for each shift is 3:30-7:00 PM CST and they are scheduled to be held in person in the Twin Cities Metro (location TBD).

Remote Volunteer Opportunity for the MN Urban Debate League

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to more than 1,200 Twin Cities students. We’re seeking remote volunteers for the 2023 Spring Semester!

Because many of the students we work with are English language learners, one of the most powerful tools we have to help rookie debaters learn is auditory supplements to our written packets. With these recordings, students at all skill levels will be able to follow along with the text as they read, learn evidence while doing other tasks like doing chores or riding the bus, and rapidly improve their literacy and information retention.

How You Can Help

We are seeking volunteers to record our evidence packets at a conversational pace (120 words per minute). Help us record evidence for the following programs:

• Middle School Policy Debate: Record nonfiction evidence about the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA) written in English. Recordings needed by January 27th.

• Spanish Debate League: Record nonfiction evidence about Puerto Rico statehood written in Spanish. Spanish fluency is required. Recordings needed by February 17th.

• East African Debate: Record nonfiction evidence about a topic central to the East African Debate community in the Twin Cities (TBD), written in English. Recordings needed by March 1st.

• Financial Literacy Leadership Debates: Record nonfiction evidence regarding the advantages and disadvantages of banking at a large national institution versus a small, local credit union. Recordings needed by April 1st.

Volunteers need to be able to speak slowly, clearly, and with energy. No special recording equipment is required, although we do ask that you record in a quiet space with minimal distractions. We can edit your audio for you.

Participants Needed for Paid Psychology Skill-Building Study (Earn Up to $35)

This research study (IRB #: 2022-32-03) is designed to compare two different skill-building training programs that may help college students develop adjustment-related skills. You are eligible to participate if you are a current Augsburg undergraduate student.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to come to our Augsburg Psychology research laboratory for 4 sessions over the course of one month. The sessions include an initial orientation meeting and three sessions focused on one of two skills-building programs (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two–like a flip of a coin). Both programs involve mini-informational videos as well as experiential activities for you to complete. We will also have you complete a few personality measures. You will be assigned a peer coach who will work with you as progress through the study and guide you through the study components. Each of the sessions will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, we will check in one last time 3-months after the study is over for a brief online survey.

Participants will receive up to $35 for their participation. $5 for each of the first three sessions, and $10 for both the fourth session and the 3 month follow-up. Alternatively, Augsburg University Psychology students will receive up to $25 and 4 research credits.

CTL/CWC Zoom Session: Supporting and Responding to Students in Distress

Our students are struggling with increasingly complex needs and demands, many of which can create barriers and challenges to academic success. Further, because faculty see their students regularly, they are often the first to notice that a student is struggling. This session will focus on helping faculty to identify students in distress by increasing awareness of signs of struggle. We will then share strategies and resources for supporting students when you notice they are struggling.

URGO Academic–Year Research Funds

URGO now has funding for academic-year research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. Students are paid $1,200 for 80 hours of research. Research must be completed by May 23.

Student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals immediately. The URGO Advisory Committee will review proposals on a rolling basis.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM: All disciplines welcome
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 15th – July 28th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.
