Yoga Today

Good Morning. I will be teaching yoga at Augsburg this summer until June 27. Please join us TODAY from 12:15–1 p.m. in Si-Melby 128. This class will take place every Wednesday.
We will practice flowing breath to movement, staying in the present moment, and challenging our bodies through different poses during this 45 minute yoga practice. Mats will be available if you do not have your own mat. Open to all students, staff, faculty, and any others part of the Augsburg community. Auggie Basics – Housing

As part of the Augsburg University Equity Proposal, the Auggie Basics – Housing program (former known as the Equity Housing Program) is designed to address the needs of students who experience housing instability. The purpose of the program is to provide a bridge for students whose housing is not stable as they seek to identify a permanent solution.

Students accepted into the program (10 spots) will live on campus without cost to the student. Regardless of when students enter the program, the housing commitment will cover the full academic year if needed. If the student secures permanent housing elsewhere, they will be released from the program and the spot will be offered to another student. Students must reapply each academic year. Being chosen for the Auggie Basics program one year does not guarantee participation in future years.

A new process is being developed for students who experience food instability. More information will be provided as it is available.

Support for Professor Wanyama: sign a letter this week

Professor Mzenga Wanyama has a meeting with ICE this Thursday, May 10.  The urgent next step in his case is to get our senators to expedite a response from the State Department on his and Mary’s waiver applications. To that end, all faculty and staff are invited to sign a letter urging Senator Klobuchar to take immediate action to demand that the State Department expedite the waiver application for Mzenga Wanyama and Mary Mzenga.

Where you can sign the letter:

1. We will be in the atrium of Hagfor’s Center before and after most of the 4 Days in May workshops. Look for us and/or the letters at the table outside of Hagfors 150.

2. Copies of the letter to be signed and a reference sheet with phone numbers that one can call are on the counter in Judi Green’s office. Signed letters can be left in a folder there or can be left directly with Judi. We will pick up the letters at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, 5/11.

You are invited to join us as we hand-deliver these letters to Senator Klobuchar’s office on Friday after the 4 Days in May workshops wrap up at 2:30. More information will be forthcoming on carpooling options in the Friday. Daily Amail. We’d love to have a big group deliver these – all are welcome.

Somali Community Members Needed – Earn $, Make a Difference

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University which provides academic competitive debate programming to 750 middle and high school students in the Twin Cities. Spring is the Somali Debate Initiative season, and we need judges.

We are seeking members of the Somali community to judge our Somali Debate Initiative students. Judges watch rounds, determine the winner, and provide feedback so students may improve their communication skills. No experience? Don’t worry. We’ll train you.

Judges are paid $55 per tournament.

We will have Somali Debate tournaments on the following dates:

AugSTEM Scholars Program: Application Deadline May 15, 2018

Applications are now open for the 2018-19 AugSTEM Scholars Program.

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of $5,000, $7,500 and $10,000 per student per year (differences in award amounts correspond to levels of financial need). Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:

-Enrolled full-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, chemistry, computer science,
environmental studies, mathematics, or physics)
-Within 5 semesters of graduating as of Fall 2018
-Major GPA of 3.0 or higher
-U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
-Demonstrated financial need via FAFSA

Application deadline: May 15, 2018 at midnight.

Incoming community college transfer students and Augsburg students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.
