Level: Introductory
Track: D&I Strategy
Presenters: Veronika Hucke, D&I Strategy and Solutions | Lisa Kepinski, Inclusion Institute

Remote work can positively impact how we all do work, providing benefits to the employee, the organization and society. Having access to great technology tools and solutions is a vital part of enabling this way of working now and into the future. Yet, equally as important is the experience of being a remote worker and addressing the challenges associated with creating a strong sense of belonging and inclusion in the virtual workplace.

This webinar will share insights from a recent global research study on inclusive remote work and will offer practical tips for what works. Additionally, a case study from Citrix outlining how they have created an inclusive environment for distributed teams to heighten engagement, inclusion, belonging, retention and productivity will be shared during the webinar.

Learning Outcomes
– Understand the framework of remote work and the employee’s experience with this way of working
– Learn about the opportunities and challenges with remote work from multiple perspectives
– Receive pragmatic inspiration on what to do going forward

Inclusive Remote Work: Getting It Right

submitted by lopezfr@augsburg.edu

When: January 16, 2020 11:00 am – 12:00 pm CST
Level: Introductory
Track: D&I Strategy
Presenters: Veronika Hucke, D&I Strategy and Solutions | Lisa Kepinski, Inclusion Institute

Globally, more than half of companies allow some form of remote work and, in the U.S., it is already a commonplace reality.

Sad news about a faculty emeritus colleague

submitted by greenj@augsburg.edu

Dear Faculty and Staff,

I am writing to share the sad news that Dr. Richard C. Nelson, former professor and chair of Augsburg’s department of history, passed away on Sunday, December 22nd.

Rick received the BA from the University of Nebraska, and the MA and PhD from the University of Minnesota. He began teaching at Augsburg in 1967, earned tenure and promotion to associate professor in 1977, and was promoted to professor in 1986. Rick retired from Augsburg in 2000 and was awarded faculty emeritus status.

Rick was a prominent faculty leader who – in addition to other significant contributions – served as president of the Faculty Senate. He was a classical scholar, with research interests focused on ancient Assyria and Sumeria. His expertise in ancient history shaped the experience of successive generations of students.

Together with English professor Dave Wood, Rick co-authored The Anderson Chronicles: An Intimate Portrait of Augsburg College, 1963-1997, which continued the work of Carl Chrislock’s From Fjord to Freeway: 100 years, Augsburg College.

Rick was a long-time member of what became known as The Seminar — a group of colleagues, across many disciplines (Biology, Physics, English, History, Art, Sociology, Music, and more) who met locally every Friday for over fifty years, where close bonds were developed and families became tied closely together.

A memorial service will be held in Rick’s home town of Beatrice, Nebraska on January 4, 2020. A full obituary with additional details is posted online.

Dr. Lauren Causey earns research administrator certification

submitted by petersj4@augsburg.edu

Dr. Lauren Causey, Manager of Sponsored Research, is now a Certified Research Administrator (CRA).

The CRA exam is administered by the Research Administrators Certification Council. Earning this credential is an important indicator that Lauren possesses the range of knowledge needed to oversee the entire life cycle of a federal sponsored program, from pre-award research and proposal development to award negotiation and budget management.

Lauren joined the Office of Grants and Sponsored Programs in November of 2018 where she oversees faculty research and federal grant submissions (e.g. National Science Foundation & National Institutes of Health). Prior to joining Augsburg, she was Senior Evaluation and Research Associate at the Science Museum of Minnesota. Lauren holds a Master’s Degree in Education from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Education, Curriculum, and Instruction from the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities.

Please join me in congratulating Lauren for this remarkable achievement!

Tech Tip Tuesday: Pre-plan for a snow day

submitted by tensen@augsburg.edu

Weather and other emergencies that cancel class can disrupt the teaching plan you originally devised in your syllabus. Fortunately, Augsburg has a number of e-learning tools that allow you to transform your in-class lesson(s) into an online (asynchronous) equivalent. As you ready your classes for next semester, why not create a snow-day lesson plan ahead of time that you can quickly put into action should need be? Check out the link below for suggestions about how to re-imagine a lesson plan with relatively short notice so you won’t have to reorganize to catch up.
