Seeking smart phones in working order, used okay

submitted by youngs@augsburg.edu

A group of volunteers are seeking three smart phones for a family of asylum seekers staying in Minneapolis. The four of them have one telephone and it would be great if they could all be connected. The Lopez parents have two boys, 18 and 15, and phones would help them feel more secure as summer comes and bike-riding season starts. In addition, they need to be easily contactable to receive court and government communications. If you have one or more phones in working order, unlocked or T-mobile ready, that you would like to donate, please contact Sherilyn Young at 651-224-7308 or sherilyn.young@msn.com. Thank you.

Sad news about a former colleague

submitted by garvey@augsburg.edu

John Sander sent the obituary for his mother, Marianne Sander, former Vice President of Student Affairs:

Marianne went peacefully to heaven on April 20, 2019 to be with our risen Lord. She was greatly loved and will be held in the hearts of many friends and family she graciously touched during her lifetime.

Born 12/21/1928 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Marianne attended Valparaiso University where she married Bob Sander in 1950 and lived in St. Paul, Minnesota until they retired in Bonita Beach, Florida.

Marianne throughout her life demonstrated her love for God and willingness to serve others. She was a pioneer as the first woman vice president in the history of Augsburg University where she served as the Vice President of Student Affairs. She also served many years as the President of the Friends of Barefoot Beach Preserve. She also served with her voice in the church choir, her caring as part of the Stephen Ministries and her philanthropy in support of Valparaiso University, Augsburg University, Luther Seminary and Emmanuel Lutheran Church. These examples, among others, demonstrated the way in which Marianne exercised her deep and profound faith in Jesus Christ throughout her life, a legacy that will be forever cherished by her family.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Bob Sander and her children Robert Sander Jr (wife Lenda), Margaret Sander, Elizabeth Moreira (husband Jorge), John Sander (wife Barb), nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

A celebration of life was held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 777 Mooring Line Dr, Naples, FL 34102 on Saturday, April 27. Memorials may be given to Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

The Creating an Inclusive Campus (CIC) Workshop is Wed., May 15, 1-4 pm. The topic is:
Managing the Moments
Arguably the best learning takes place when all students feel able to bring their full selves forward and engage in an environment that considers the historical context and current cultural climate; with the humility and promise to learn with others. This workshop will engage us in recognizing and responding to dynamic moments born out of human differences while honoring our commitments to intentional diversity. Participants will have the opportunity to examine and respond to scenarios in small groups.

Developed and sponsored by the Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Committee. Facilitated by Joanne Reeck, Chief Inclusion Officer, with faculty and staff providing information and experiences.

The CIC is one of several sessions and workshops offered May 14-16. For a full schedule, as well as descriptions of all of the sessions, check out:

National Bike To Work Week: Know the Law

submitted by peterlin@augsburg.edu

Auggies, it’s National Bike to Work Week from May 14-18th. I am calling all faculty and staff, who are able, to ride your bike to work during the week of May 14-18!

Before you begin bicycling, or as a refresher, be prepared to share the road and know the laws regarding safe bicycling in Minnesota. It’s important to know these rules as a motorist, as well!

1. Bicyclists may ride on all Minnesota Roads, except where restricted.
2. Bicyclists should ride on the road, and must ride in the same direction as traffic.
3. Motorists must at all times maintain a three-foot clearance when passing a bicyclist.
4. Bicyclists must obey all traffic control signs and signals.
5. Motorists and bicyclists must yield the right-of-way to each other.
6. Bicyclists must signal their turns and should ride in a predictable manner.
7. Bicyclists must use headlight and rear reflectors when it is dark. To increase visibility, add a rear flashing light.
8. Bicyclists should always wear helmets.

For more information, visit: https://www.dot.state.mn.us/bike/education/index.html

Join me and fellow colleagues in cycling to work; post a picture and use hashtag #TakeARide2018 on your choice of social media as proof and inspiration to others. I encourage you all to promote group bike rides, repair sessions, and coordinate meet-ups to help spread the word during this week, and beyond.

Auggie Basics – Housing

submitted by griesse@augsburg.edu

As part of the Augsburg University Equity Proposal, the Auggie Basics – Housing program (former known as the Equity Housing Program) is designed to address the needs of students who experience housing instability. The purpose of the program is to provide a bridge for students whose housing is not stable as they seek to identify a permanent solution.

Students accepted into the program (10 spots) will live on campus without cost to the student. Regardless of when students enter the program, the housing commitment will cover the full academic year if needed. If the student secures permanent housing elsewhere, they will be released from the program and the spot will be offered to another student. Students must reapply each academic year. Being chosen for the Auggie Basics program one year does not guarantee participation in future years.

A new process is being developed for students who experience food instability. More information will be provided as it is available.

To apply for Auggie Basics – Housing, please complete the application below. If you have any questions, please contact studentaffairs@augsburg.edu or call the Student Affairs office at 612-330-1160.
