Warrior Women Film Screening

The Augsburg Native American Film Series presents Warrior Women on Saturday October 5, 2019. Warrior Women looks at the history of Indigenous activism as lived and led by AIM activist Madonna Thunder Hawk and her daughter Marcy. The film traces Madonna’s work for cultural sovereignty in education as she helped create the “We Will Remember” Survival School and the shared work she and her daughter have continued around environmental justice and Indigenous sovereignty. Join us for the screening of WARRIOR WOMEN and video conversations with Director Elizabeth Castle and activist Marcella (Marcy) Gilbert.

Auggie Pass Available for Day Students

Over 1400 Augsburg day students have picked up their Auggie Pass!

The Auggie Pass is an all-you-can-ride pass for Augsburg day students. Supported by the green fee, Metro Transit and Augsburg, the Auggie Pass is good on any bus, any time, and any light rail, any time, as well as the NorthStar line to Anoka.

Students can get their Auggie Pass at the Library Circulation Desk – please bring Augsburg ID.

The passes are good August 1, 2019 through May 30, 2020.

For students who use Metro Mobility, please email Mike Fetting, fettingm@augsburg.edu. The Auggie Pass does not work on Metro Mobility, so we have Go To cards with pre-loaded $180 value – and will add more value as needed.

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institutes is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. Selected participants spend the summer at one of five participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2020 and August 2021. To be competitive for this opportunity, students should have a 3.5 GPA or above. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a $1,000 stipend. Augsburg Support for Uninsured Students – The People’s Center

Augsburg is now working with the People’s Center to provide certain clinic services to students (all academic programs) who don’t have insurance for a $5 co-pay.

The People’s Center is located at 425 20th Avenue South, one block west from Augsburg, off Riverside Avenue.

With a $5.00 co-pay, the following are available to Augsburg students who do not have insurance:

Office visits for acute or chronic medical problems
Annual physical exams – 1 per year
Sexually transmitted diseases screening and lab work done at The People’s Center (lab diagnostics done outside of The People’s Center are not covered)
X-rays performed at The People’s Center
Tetanus immunization
Lab tests performed at The People’s Center
Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux)
Casts, crutches, splints, slings and ace bandages
Allergy injections (prescription and supply must be provided by student)
Flu shots

If you have health insurance, your insurance provider may cover medical services through The People’s Center. The clinic will bill your insurance for medical services and you will be responsible for any co-pays or deductibles associated with your insurance. You should check with your insurance provider to see if services at The People’s Center will be covered.

Smiley’s Clinic remains available for students – they accept most forms of insurance.

DPS will provide an escort to The People’s Center and/or to Smiley’s Clinic.

Gamers United General Meeting this Thursday

Come and join Gamers United this Thursday for our 2nd General Meeting of the year! We have meetings every other Thursday in OGC 113 from 6-8 PM.

These meetings are a means to inform, get involved, and enjoy some good old fashioned gaming.

We recommend and encourage people to bring games and consoles, such as board games, cards, switches, PS4, xboxes, laptops, PCs, 3DS, etc. We will also provide a variety of games as possible. If you plan to bring a console or other that needs additional set up, such as a monitor, please let us know beforehand so we can help accommodate for such things.

LSAMP NSS Funding Opportunities for Underrepresented Students in STEM

Are you an underrepresented student pursuing a degree in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)? If so, you might be eligible to participate in LSAMP North Star STEM (NSS). Augsburg’s LSAMP NSS program is designed to help STEM students succeed through peer mentoring, workshops, research opportunities, industry visits, and conference travel. LSAMP NSS funding opportunities include:

– Professional development stipends (up to $500) for participation in LSAMP NSS programming
– Travel funding for professional STEM conferences (including airfare and lodging)
– Academic year or summer research funding (contingent on mentor match)

STEM majors at Augsburg: biology, biopsychology, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, mathematics, physics

LSAMP NSS eligibility:
– Full-time student pursuing a STEM major.
– US citizen or permanent resident.
– Underrepresented in STEM as defined by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This includes being Black, Hispanic/Latinx, Native American, Alaska Native or Pacific Islander.

Any student looking for an internship or employment in spring or summer of 2020 should be actively searching for opportunities and applying now. There are a number of opportunities this fall to help students be competitive in the job application process. Look for posters around campus and on Handshake for a full list of programs.

Final Friday at the Hagfors Greenhouse

Want to know what we’ve got growing on? The Biology Department Plant Growth Facilities are opening the doors of the Hagfors Greenhouse to the Augsburg community on the last Friday of every month for Final Friday Flower Hour. Greenhouse staff will be available to showcase our plant collections and research projects. Come see our collections of crop wild relatives and species from the Horn of Africa, and marvel at our new living wall.

The next Final Friday is September 27, from noon to 2PM. The Greenhouse is located on the 4th floor of the Hagfors Center.

The Environmental Stewardship intern team is helping with Taste of Augsburg by sorting waste at the event! All catering supplies are compostable, but many event attendees can get confused by the options for disposing waste. We’ll come ready with knowledge and cool stickers to encourage learning and increased contributions to our campus-wide sustainability goals! We are looking for more volunteers to help us.

Taste of Augsburg is on September 28th from 11 AM – 1:30 PM at Murphy Square Park. Taste of Augsburg features tasty treats by Augsburg Student Organizations. All sales on tickets are final and all funds go directly to the host organization/student group.

Spend winter break in both London and Edinburgh exploring the connections between youth culture, media, and social change, with a focus on Harry Potter and Brexit.

Course option: WST 220 – fulfills Humanities and Augsburg Experience

This program is limited to 15 students, accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. A waitlist will be used as needed.

This 4-credit course is part of the spring 2020 enrollment. It can be taken as part of, or in addition to, your usual course load, and overload fees incurred by this study abroad program will be waived.

Program cost $4,675
includes: international airfare, all meals, all lodging, all program activities, all transportation in the UK. There is no additional tuition fee for full-time undergrad students.

Campus Cupboard moving to Old Science building, 8A

The Campus Cupboard (student food shelf) is moving to the Old Science building, room 8A!

It will be co-locating with the ShareShop, a new space on campus for students to share items/ resources (like cooking equipment, camping gear, etc.)

Open Hours: Fall 2019 Cupboard Hours will be posted ASAP on the Campus Cupboard website. The Cupboard will re-open at the end of September. If you need to access the Cupboard before it officially opens, feel free to email Natalie Jacobson or Nick Keener.

Free produce: Campus Kitchen distributes free, local produce to the Augsburg community on Mondays from 2-4pm in the Christensen Lobby. The first hour of produce distributions is for Augsburg students, the second hour is for anyone in the Augsburg community.

Hey all,

Augsburg’s Environmental Stewardship Committee and Campus Cupboard are proud to announce a new student resource on campus: the student Share Shop. We are working towards opening this space in the sublevel of the old science building by Fall, 2019. To help us get started we are asking you—students, staff, and faculty at Augsburg—for some helpful donations.
Based off of a recent survey, here are some of the things we are looking for for the share shop:

– Household / dorm Repair (Spackle, Tool kits, poster putty)
– Recreational gear (sports equipment, out door games, hammocks, etc.)
– Office materials (calculators, sharpeners, staplers)
– First aid kits
– Twin XL sheets (new or washed)
– Weather related items (umbrellas, shovels, extra hats/scarves/mittens)
– Sewing/glasses repair kits
– Hot pots or rice cookers
– Cooking (Microwave, pots and pans, utensils, coffee makers)
– Board games, DVDs

Any donations are greatly appreciated and welcome, but please don’t feel obligated to donate. Donations can be brought to the Sabo Center located in the basement of Anderson Hall and placed in the designated bins. We appreciate your time and consideration thank you in advance.

Campus Kitchen: Produce every Monday

Campus Kitchen will continue produce distribution every Monday this semester from 2:00pm-4:00pm in Christiansen lobby. We will be implementing a new rule this semester to insure that everyone has an opportunity to get produce. The first hour (2-3pm) will be reserved for students and the following hour will be open for everyone. Please bring your own bag if you are able. Thank you for your continued support.

URGO Conference Travel Grants Available for Student Researchers

URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year and will begin reviewing applications September 23rd.

These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project.

Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals in the fall. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly and will begin reviewing proposals September 23rd.

This course invites you to hear Guatemalan people’s views of their country, to explore past and present US involvement, and learn from those who lived through and survived the civil war spanning four decades (1960-1996), as well as a new generation of writers and artists–all who creatively and peacefully counteract the culture of fear through art and literature.
This 4-credit course is part of the spring 2020 enrollment. It can be taken as part of, or in addition to, your usual course load, and overload fees incurred by this study abroad program will be waived.

Model UN in New York City – study away on spring break

Take the spring semester POL 368 Model UN course, and travel to NYC for the Model UN conference at the end of March!

POL 368 is a regular course throughout the spring semester, with regular weekly classes. During the first half of the semester, students will prepare for the Model UN in NYC which takes place just after spring break, from March 29 to April 2.

Each year, the Augsburg delegation represents a different country with delegates assigned to particular UN committees or organizations, each with their own set of issues. Delegates have to understand the challenges of representing that country with its particular history, culture, and current foreign policy priorities and diplomatic objectives. At the same time, each delegate represents that country on a particular committee and will be researching issues such as climate change, human rights, trade, poverty, human trafficking, or arms control.

Program cost $1,300
includes: round trip airfare to NYC, hotel accommodation, Model UN registration and delegate fees. There is no additional tuition fee for full-time undergrad students.
Students are responsible for their own transportation in NYC, as well as all meals during the program.

Are you an underrepresented student pursuing a degree in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)? If so, you might be eligible to participate in LSAMP North Star STEM (NSS). Augsburg’s LSAMP NSS program is designed to help STEM students succeed through peer mentoring, workshops, research opportunities, industry visits, and conference travel. LSAMP NSS funding opportunities include:

– Professional development stipends (up to $500) for participation in LSAMP NSS programming
– Travel funding for professional STEM conferences (including airfare and lodging)
– Academic year or summer research funding (contingent on mentor match)

STEM majors at Augsburg: biology, biopsychology, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, mathematics, physics

LSAMP NSS eligibility:
– Full-time student pursuing a STEM major.
– US citizen or permanent resident.

Course Description:
Art of Resistance will immerse you in contemporary Palestinian culture and invite you to learn directly from a wide range of artists in the region. You will have the unique opportunity to experience art and performance first-hand in diverse Palestinian contexts, from a day-long excursion to cultural sites in Ramallah to a conference call with artists in Gaza. A major component of the course will be ongoing cultural exchange with students from Dar al-Kalima University in Bethlehem. Augsburg students will also learn about the complex political, historical, social, and religious context for Palestinian art and theater through guided tours, performances, gallery talks, museum visits, readings, and discussions. Throughout these experiences, students will interrogate what it means to create art under occupation, explore various definitions of the “art of resistance,” and learn tools to make creative work that defies and reimagines the status quo.

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institutes is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. Selected participants spend the summer at one of five participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2020 and August 2021. To be competitive for this opportunity, students should have a 3.5 GPA or above. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a $1,000 stipend. URGO Conference Travel Grants Available for Student Researchers

URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year and will begin reviewing applications September 23rd.

Study a language abroad for free next summer with CLS

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully-funded eight to ten week language and cultural immersion program in which students receive eight credits of intensive language instruction in less-commonly taught languages, as well as structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. CLS is part of a US State Department initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages critical to national security and economic prosperity. There are fifteen languages that applicants can select from. Alumni of the program also receive one year of non-competitive eligibility (NCE) status when applying for federal government jobs.
The CLS Program seeks participants with diverse interests, and from a wide range of fields of study and career paths. Competitive applicants will need to be able to illustrate a commitment to language learning, a strong academic record and potential to succeed in a rigorous academic setting, and ability to adapt to an intensive program and challenging cultural environment. Most programs do not require experience studying the selected language. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Course Description:
Many U.S. citizens know little of Guatemala and the struggles its people face although it is a nation that continuously finds its fortunes bound to the interests and intent of the United States.

This course invites you to hear Guatemalan people’s views of their country, to explore past and present US involvement, and learn from those who lived through and survived the civil war spanning four decades (1960-1996), as well as a new generation of writers and artists–all who creatively and peacefully counteract the culture of fear through art and literature.
This 4-credit course is part of the spring 2020 enrollment. It can be taken as part of, or in addition to, your usual course load, and overload fees incurred by this study abroad program will be waived.

Today, most of the world’s population lives in metropolitan areas, whether that means a traditional city, a suburb, an exurb or a slum – this is a very recent change in human history. Humans are fundamentally social beings, and urban areas provide the space where most people are born, grow up and interact with one another throughout their entire lifetimes.. We will explore the city as a social and political phenomenon and examine how the design of cities affects social interactions in perhaps surprising ways – the placement of buildings and the design of open space may make us want to be in an area or flee it.

A new course has been added for this fall in the Environmental Studies Program and it’s all about food and its impact on the environment!! Register for ENV 100-A (Fall 2019).

The course satisfies the core curriculum requirement of Liberal Arts Foundation: Social & Behavioral Sciences and is 4 credits. We meet Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3:40-5:20pm.

General Description: Environmental Connections is an interdisciplinary introduction to current issues regarding the natural environment upon which we all depend, an environment under increasing strain. It also serves as the introductory course for Augsburg’s Environmental Studies Program and as a Social and Behavioral Sciences course in the Liberal Arts Foundation. Throughout the semester we will explore food systems and our collective challenge of balancing a sustainable society with sustainable ecologies. We all need food to survive, but current processes of cultivation, production, distribution, and waste disposal significantly, and detrimentally, impact the natural world. How serious are these challenges? How will we respond? What can be and is being done now to minimize the further damage from these human activities?

Hey all,

Augsburg’s Environmental Stewardship Committee and Campus Cupboard are proud to announce a new student resource on campus: the student Share Shop. We are working towards opening this space in the sublevel of the old science building by Fall, 2019. To help us get started we are asking you—students, staff, and faculty at Augsburg—for some helpful donations.
Based off of a recent survey, here are some of the things we are looking for for the share shop:

– Household / dorm Repair (Spackle, Tool kits, poster putty)
– Recreational gear (sports equipment, out door games, hammocks, etc.)
– Office materials (calculators, sharpeners, staplers)
– First aid kits
– Twin XL sheets (new or washed)
– Weather related items (umbrellas, shovels, extra hats/scarves/mittens)
– Sewing/glasses repair kits
– Hot pots or rice cookers

Global Youth Climate Strike

The Environmental Action Committee and Campus Ministry have organized a gathering for the Youth Climate Strike: an international effort to protest the inaction of government and businesses on Climate Change.

This event will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 20th with donuts and blessing by Campus Ministry in Foss. At 10:15 in the Oren Gateway Center Lobby, Mayor Jacob Frey, will give a brief, energizing speech. Following the send off, we will take the light rail to Western Sculpture Park for the strike. We will take the light rail back to campus after the strike at 2 p.m.

Faculty have received notice of this event. Instructors were advised to be clear about any consequences of missing classes, and they have the discretion as well to focus on environmental issues in Friday classes or to create experiential learning opportunities for students to participate in the strike. It would be a good idea to talk to your professors ahead of time. If you all have any questions, feel free to email me. Details are linked below:

Applications for Augsburg’s Mayo Innovations Scholar Program are now available on the URGO website! This program is highly competitive and is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.

What is MISP?
In the process of conducting research, Mayo Clinic scientists have developed new products that may be marketable. These products are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) for a thorough investigation of marketability. The OIP has a significant backlog of products to be investigated. One of the backlogged products or inventions is assigned to each MISP team for investigative research and formal presentation at Mayo Clinic.

Augsburg’s team will consist of an MBA student, 3 undergraduate science students, 1 undergraduate business/economics student, and a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic OIP. The team will work together to understand the science and applications of the project or innovation and analyze the market potential. Each undergraduate student on the team will receive $1,000. Teams will begin work during October and the final presentations will be in March.

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institutes is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. Selected participants spend the summer at one of five participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2020 and August 2021. To be competitive for this opportunity, students should have a 3.5 GPA or above. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a $1,000 stipend. URGO Conference Travel Grants Available for Student Researchers

URGO offers up to $850 in travel funding for Augsburg undergraduates who have been accepted to present research at a professional conference. These funds can mitigate the high costs of travel such as airfare and lodging, and can contribute to students’ professionalization.

The application is available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) at the “conference travel” page. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to work with their research mentor to submit a travel application as soon as possible after receiving acceptance to a conference. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly throughout the school year and will begin reviewing applications September 23rd.

These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project.

Study a language abroad for free next summer with CLS

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully-funded eight to ten week language and cultural immersion program in which students receive eight credits of intensive language instruction in less-commonly taught languages, as well as structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. CLS is part of a US State Department initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages critical to national security and economic prosperity. There are fifteen languages that applicants can select from. Alumni of the program also receive one year of non-competitive eligibility (NCE) status when applying for federal government jobs.
The CLS Program seeks participants with diverse interests, and from a wide range of fields of study and career paths. Competitive applicants will need to be able to illustrate a commitment to language learning, a strong academic record and potential to succeed in a rigorous academic setting, and ability to adapt to an intensive program and challenging cultural environment. Most programs do not require experience studying the selected language. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

The Campus Cupboard (student food shelf) is moving to the Old Science building, room 8A!

It will be co-locating with the ShareShop, a new space on campus for students to share items/ resources (like cooking equipment, camping gear, etc.)

Open Hours: Fall 2019 Cupboard Hours will be posted ASAP on the Campus Cupboard website. The Cupboard will re-open at the end of September. If you need to access the Cupboard before it officially opens, feel free to email Natalie Jacobson or Nick Keener.

Free produce: Campus Kitchen distributes free, local produce to the Augsburg community on Mondays from 2-4pm in the Christensen Lobby. The first hour of produce distributions is for Augsburg students, the second hour is for anyone in the Augsburg community.

Bishop Younan’s parents were Palestinian refugees. His entire life and leadership have been focused on finding a lasting, just solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and building up the civic agency of Palestinian people.

Note: Bishop Younan will also be speaking the next day at the Bernhard M. Christensen Symposium, alongside Dr. Hamdy El-Sawaf. This Brown Bag luncheon will be a good chance for small group discussions.

STEM Peer Mentoring is a student-led mentoring program that focuses on providing support to First-years and Sophomores as they navigate their academic and professional careers in STEM.

Mentors in STEM Peer Mentoring can play a pivotal role in establishing the success of beginning STEM students. If you’re a Junior or Senior in a STEM major, enjoy being a leader and/or have lots of advice & resources to share — this is for you!! (Transfer students are also welcome!)

The survey used to gather feedback on student course experiences was redesigned and adopted in the Fall of 2018. To learn more about the strengths of the newly revised form, and areas where it could be improved, we ask faculty to complete this short questionnaire and reflect on the utility of the feedback that they have obtained using this new instrument.
