Host a New International Student for Dinner

submitted by devega@augsburg.edu

Greetings Augsburg Community!

A new semester is just around the corner, and we are expecting NEW international students to join us this Fall Semester—representing countries like Jordan, Syria, South Sudan, South Korea, Nigeria, South Korea, Norway and the UK, to name a few!

As we collaboratively welcome this group, we plan for different experiences including a dinner hosted by you—our faculty, staff, and students—in your homes. These events create a space for our new students to connect directly with members of our community, AND the dinner provides a time for you to learn about the incoming international students and their goals at Augsburg.

Date: Tuesday, August 26, 2025
Time: Pick up at 5 p.m. with a return to campus around 7 p.m.

We ask that our hosts pick up students from campus and return them after dinner.

Travel Advisory: I-94 Closure in Minneapolis This Weekend

submitted by farrisr@augsburg.edu

Starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, August 15, MnDOT will be closing all I-94 entrance and exit ramps between I-35W and Hwy 280, as well as the ramp from eastbound I-94 to Hwy 55.

At 10 p.m., both directions of I-94 will be fully closed in the same area. The closures are necessary to allow crews to restore pavement markings and return traffic to its permanent condition following nearly five months of bridge maintenance work along I-94 in Minneapolis.

To bypass these closures, please follow the posted detour of I-35W to Hwy 36, I-35E to I-94.

By 5 a.m. on Monday, August 18, all lanes and ramps along I-94 will reopen for the Minnesota State Fair through Labor Day, except for one. The ramp from Huron Blvd. to eastbound I-94 will reopen on Wednesday, August 20.

Work will resume after Labor Day to complete the removal of the crossovers and other items such as upgrading the signage and lighting. Most of the work is anticipated to be completed by the end of September 2025. Travelers can expect periodic lane closures in spring 2026 when crews apply a deck sealant to the restored bridges.

All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule permitting and subject to change.

Visit the MnDOT project website for more information.

Scam Email About a Research Job

submitted by krajewsk@augsburg.edu

Last week an email scam was directed at some Augsburg students with the subject of “Detailed Requirements.” The email offered a temporary job in a research project. The email was written to appear to come from an Augsburg faculty member. It was well-written which made it seem legitimate.

This email was an example of an employment scam, which are common. Some key red flags in the email were
– Strange From email address
– Not From an Augsburg address
– A job offer that is unusually good (either pay or hours or work involved)
– It was unexpected

You can always email your LFC or the Tech Desk if you’re unsure about the validity of an email.

Phishing Email About Payroll

submitted by krajewsk@augsburg.edu

This weekend a phishing email targeted Augsburg purporting to contain important payroll and benefits information. The subject is “Augsburg University has issued an important notification regarding your payroll and your newly approved benefits for the month of August.”

This is a phishing email and is fake. The website linked in the email is an attempt to steal your password.

With AI, phishing emails will keep getting better so we must remain skeptical, take a breath, and confirm the source through another channel (like a new direct email to a known email address or calling the office/person).

Some key red flags in the email include
– A sense of urgency
– It is unexpected
– A From email address that is strange
– A link to a site which does not show you the link address (it’s hiding the link destination)

You can always email your LFC or the Tech Desk if you’re unsure about the validity of the email.

School Year 25-26 Parking Passes

submitted by hartkop1@augsburg.edu

Parking permit sales will begin for all eligible Students, Staff and Faculty on Monday, August 11. Similar to previous years, all eligible users will be able to purchase a surface lot permit starting on Monday, August 11; with the exception of the underground garages.

If you are interested in purchasing an underground parking space, you will need to email parking@augsburg.edu on the following dates depending on your status:

Monday August 11 – Senior Students/Graduates (resident and commuter)

Tuesday August 12 – Junior and Senior Students (resident and commuter)

Wednesday August 13 – Sophomore, Junior and Senior Students (resident and commuter)

Thursday August 14 – First Year commuter students, and all Sophomore, Junior and Senior Students

Friday August 15 – Open to all eligible users (including Staff and Faculty)

Underground garage spaces will be issued on a first come, first serve basis, and **spaces will not be held if you email parking ahead of the scheduled sales date for your group** (example, if a Staff member emails parking@augsburg.edu on August 11 and before about wanting an underground space, that Staff member will be placed on a wait list and will only be considered for a space after all other users who emailed on the correct date are placed).

When purchasing a parking permit, please consider the following to avoid any tickets being issued throughout the semester/year:

Enter all known license plates that may be brought to campus under your 2025/26 parking permit

Double check that each license plate is entered correctly – if you notice a mistake after entering the license plates and are unable to change it yourself, email parking@augsburg.edu as soon as possible to get the correct license plate number entered. It is individual responsibility to make sure vehicle information is inputted correctly.

If you have any questions, concerns, or requesting Letter of Residency, please contact parking@augsburg.edu

Public Service Loan Forgiveness Updates

submitted by vachta@augsburg.edu

As you may have seen, the past few months have been filled with significant student loan changes that could directly impact your community. Last week, the Supreme Court announced that the Trump administration can proceed with mass layoffs at the Department of Education. In March, President Trump issued an executive order that reshapes organizations’ eligibility for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). Most recently, the negotiated rulemaking process concluded, which will usher in even more changes to the PSLF program.

Savi is offered to Augsburg employees and their immediate family members as a tool to explore the various PSLF options and navigate enrollment. To better understand these policy changes and implications, Savi is hosting a stakeholder call on Tuesday, August 5th, 2025, to share the following:

– How the Department of Education layoffs affect student loans, including application review and payment counts
– What and when to expect changes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program
– What action borrowers should be taking right now

Emergency Medical Help for Both My Parents – Please Help

submitted by garcia10@augsburg.edu

Hi, My name is Beth Garcia I am a 3rd year Biopsychology and Chemistry student. As I was wrapping up my summer research through McNair.

On July 25th—my mom’s birthday—both of my parents were hospitalized. My dad is battling pneumonia, and my mom had to undergo emergency surgery to remove her appendix. She’s also experiencing respiratory issues.
This has been incredibly hard on my family, emotionally and financially. We’ve created a GoFundMe to help with their medical bills and recovery costs.
If you’re able to donate or even just share the link, it would mean the world to me.
(Link in bio or below)
Thank you so much for your love and
