Come see Enemy of the People! (A musical adaptation)

An Enemy of the People examines how a community responds when the local doctor threatens to expose that the town’s water source they rely on for tourism is contaminated. It raises questions of how far a community will go to protect their town’s secret so they can keep tourism dollars coming and circumvent a path to financial ruin. Scenes and songs will happen in close proximity to the audience, compelling them to feel as if they are part of the story. Immersed in the play’s dilemma, audiences will find themselves part of the climactic ending of the play when they actually vote to shape the ending of the story.

Daily Chapel: All Saints Commemoration

Please join us in Hoversten Chapel at 10:40 am for our All Saints service. The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. In this service we remember loved ones who have died, especially in this past year. We will hold a special service with music from the Global Harmony Choir, music faculty Kenneth Green and Brian De Young, and student chamber musicians.

Do you need a place to bring your anxiety, expectations and other feelings around the 2024 election? Would you like to debrief our nation’s elections with members of our staff and faculty community?  The Provost’s Office, Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship and Campus Ministry are partnering to host two Post-Election Day Gatherings for staff and faculty on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.

An in-person gathering is scheduled for 9am in Hoversten Chapel and a virtual gathering is scheduled for 4pm on ZOOM. Augsburg faculty and staff are invited to attend. The purpose of these gatherings is to make space for connection and care for our staff and faculty as we move through the elections, and to offer support and resources as we care for our students and wider community.

Separate events and resources will support our students.

This year’s student-directed play “Tian” starts auditions in just two weeks. Whether you are already experienced on stage, or want to dive into a new adventure – we are so excited to meet you. Play Description: Who owns history? And who is allowed to tell its stories? The student-written piece Tian centers around these fundamental questions. This conflict becomes clear when the audience is led through the life of romantic poet Karoline von Günderrode by two characters with two very different claims to Karoline’s story: Bettine von Arnim, contemporary and close friend of Karoline, who wants to paint a strong, feminist picture; and the Playwright whose goal is to create an enticing, heart wrenching play. The audience finds themselves in the in-betweens of history, whilst being part of Karoline’s personal journey filled with struggles, doubt, and dreams.

Capitol Pathways Program – Paid Internships at the State Capitol – Applications Due November 15

With the long-term goal of making Minnesota state government and policymaking more representative of our diverse communities, our program provides students leadership, legislative and career readiness training alongside an immersive internship experience with an organization working in policy during the legislative session. November 8th was selected as the date for the annual National First-Generation College Celebration to honor the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965. The HEA was passed to ensure that everyone has access to higher education, regardless of income. In recognition of First-Generation College Celebration Day, the departments of TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO McNair Scholars, and Multicultural Life will be hosting events that highlight the first-generation college experience during the week of November 4th. These events are geared towards students but all are welcome to attend! *There will be a raffle for everyone who attends and signs in! Prizes include vintage TRIO gear and other swag!*

Applications Are Now Open for the PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2025 (graduating by May ‘27)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Monday, November 18th, 2024 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Monday, November 25th, 2024 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Mark Your Calendar – Open Enrollment Begins November 11

Open Enrollment, the annual period when benefits-eligible employees make their benefit choices for the coming year, begins Monday, November 11 and continues through Sunday, November 24. This is the only time of year when you may elect or change your benefits, unless you experience a qualifying life event.

All benefits-eligible employees are encouraged to attend open enrollment information sessions. The first session will be held virtually on Thursday, November 7 at 12:00 noon.
The 2025 Benefit Guide will be available by November 4 – watch A-mail for the announcement.

Starting in 2025, Augsburg is pleased to introduce an additional benefit for our medical plan participants: primary and urgent care services through Kavira, at no extra cost. Kavira offers virtual and in-home visits, providing convenient access to care at little to no cost for those enrolled in our medical plans. There are no classes at Augsburg on Election Day and it’s a holiday for faculty and staff in order to make it easier for our community to vote, volunteer, and take part in the democratic process.

Students: If you live on campus, your polling place is in Christensen Center. If you did not already register to vote, your student ID will work as proof of residence if you are voting on campus OR in the city of Minneapolis, because Augsburg provided a list of students who live on campus or in Minneapolis to the county elections office.

Applications Are Now Open for the PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2025 (graduating by May ‘27)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Monday, November 18th, 2024 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Monday, November 25th, 2024 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Sharing Sad News About Jeanne L. Narum

We recently learned that former Augsburg staff member, Jeanne L. Narum, died on October 23, 2024, at the age of 88. Jeanne served as Vice President for Development at Augsburg from 1985-1988. We extend our sympathies to Jeanne’s family, friends and colleagues.

A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield, Minnesota on May 3, 2025. Memorials may be sent to: The William and Jeanne Narum Fund, St. Olaf College, 1520 St. Olaf Avenue, Northfield, MN 55057.

Mark Your Calendar – Open Enrollment Begins November 11

Open Enrollment, the annual period when benefits-eligible employees make their benefit choices for the coming year, begins Monday, November 11 and continues through Sunday, November 24. This is the only time of year when you may elect or change your benefits, unless you experience a qualifying life event.
All benefits-eligible employees are encouraged to attend open enrollment information sessions. The first session will be held virtually on Thursday, November 7 at 12:00 noon.
The 2025 Benefit Guide will be available by November 4 – watch A-mail for the announcement.

Coming in 2025: Convenient Care Anytime, Anywhere with Kavira!
Starting in 2025, Augsburg is pleased to introduce an additional benefit for our medical plan participants: primary and urgent care services through Kavira, at no extra cost. It caused performance issues with our level of user activity. So, we’re working with the feature’s vendor to get to the root cause.

Play Description: Who owns history? And who is allowed to tell its stories? The student-written piece Tian centers around these fundamental questions. This conflict becomes clear when the audience is led through the life of romantic poet Karoline von Günderrode by two characters with two very different claims to Karoline’s story: Bettine von Arnim, contemporary and close friend of Karoline, who wants to paint a strong, feminist picture; and the Playwright whose goal is to create an enticing, heart wrenching play. The audience finds themselves in the in-betweens of history, whilst being part of Karoline’s personal journey filled with struggles, doubt, and dreams.

National First-Generation College Celebration Week – November 4-8

November 8th was selected as the date for the annual National First-Generation College Celebration to honor the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965. The HEA was passed to ensure that everyone has access to higher education, regardless of income. In recognition of First-Generation College Celebration Day, the departments of TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO McNair Scholars, and Multicultural Life will be hosting events that highlight the first-generation college experience during the week of November 4th. These events are geared towards students but all are welcome to attend! *There will be a raffle for everyone who attends and signs in! Prizes include vintage TRIO gear and other swag!*

Minnesota Capitol Pathways Information & Application

Northbound I-35W Ramp and I-94 Lane Closures (October 28–November 29)

If you travel to campus via northbound I-35W and I-94 in Minneapolis, you will need to plan your route in advance and give yourself additional travel time starting October 28.

Beginning at 5 a.m. on Monday, October 28, the ramp from northbound I-35W to eastbound I-94 will be closed through Friday, November 29. Both directions of I-94 will also be reduced to two lanes between 11th Avenue South and Franklin Avenue Southeast.

The lane and ramp closures are necessary to allow crews to build crossovers to shift traffic during construction on I-94 in 2025. Crews will be doing maintenance and repair work on five bridges along I-94 in Minneapolis. These bridges include:

– I-94 bridge (Dartmouth Bridge) that spans the Mississippi River
– Riverside Avenue bridge over I-94
– I-94 over Cedar Avenue
– I-94 over the Light Rail Transit (Blue Line)
– I-94 over Hwy 55/Hiawatha Ave.

During construction in 2025, motorists can expect I-94 to be reduced to two lanes in each direction between Hwy 55/Hiawatha Avenue and the Franklin Avenue bridge over I-94. Crews will also need to temporarily close ramps along I-94 at Huron Blvd, Riverside Avenue, Cedar Avenue, and 6th and 7th streets near downtown Minneapolis. When construction is completed in fall 2025, these five bridges along I-94 will have a smoother and safer riding surface.

This event is hosted in collaboration with UMN Geography Club, UMN YDSA, and Minnesota Urban Studies Student Association (MUSSA).

2024 Overcoming Racism Conference: Reparations in Action – Friday, November 8

The conference will be held at Metro State University, 700 E 7th St., St. Paul, MN 55106

The 2024 Overcoming Racism Conference will look at the grievous harm racist policies and practices have caused the intersectional identities of Black, Indigenous, and other Communities of Color in the United States in housing, employment, criminal justice, education, and other sectors of our society. The conference will also highlight significant work underway in these sectors to bring justice and repair to those who have been harmed.

Conference Learning Objectives:
As a result of attending the 2024 Overcoming Racism Conference, participants will be able to:
Describe the harm of racism in numerous sectors in the State of MN
Identify concrete steps toward repairing the harm of racism
Imagine and name new possibilities for repairing the harm, and
Know about different opportunities for sharing and collaborating across sectors

Enemy of the People Performing This Week

Come see Enemy of the People! (A musical adaptation)

Performance dates are Nov 1-2 and 7-9 at 7PM, Nov 10 at 3PM

An Enemy of the People examines how a community responds when the local doctor threatens to expose that the town’s water source they rely on for tourism is contaminated. It raises questions of how far a community will go to protect their town’s secret so they can keep tourism dollars coming and circumvent a path to financial ruin. Scenes and songs will happen in close proximity to the audience, compelling them to feel as if they are part of the story. Immersed in the play’s dilemma, audiences will find themselves part of the climactic ending of the play when they actually vote to shape the ending of the story.

All Saints Commemoration

On Friday, November 1, we will hold an All Saints service at 10:40 am in Hoversten Chapel. The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. In this service we remember loved ones who have died, especially in this past year. We will hold a special service with music from the Global Harmony Choir, music faculty Kenneth Green and Brian De Young, and student chamber musicians. Please submit names you would like included in the service to the campus ministry office by emailing Janice Dames at dames@augsburg.edu by noon on October 31.

Día de los Muertos Program on October 31

Please join Campus Ministry and the Department of Critical Race and Ethnicity Studies in a student-led community program in commemoration of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The program will take place on Thursday, October 31, from 11:30am to 11:50am in the Hoversten Chapel. All are welcome as we take a moment to honor the departed. Small refreshments will also be provided.

Applications Are Now Open for the PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Funded by the National Science Foundation, PRISM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 per semester. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.

Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, data science, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Spring 2025 (graduating by May ‘27)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher
– U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or admitted refugee
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)

Application deadline: Monday, November 18th, 2024 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Monday, November 25th, 2024 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application).

Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

The PRISM Scholarship Program is funded by NSF Award #2030638 through August 2025. Scholarships awarded Fall 2025 and beyond are contingent on continued funding.

Funding for PRISM is provided through the National Science Foundation (NSF) S-STEM program which provides support for high-achieving STEM students with financial need at Augsburg University, Century College, Minneapolis College, and Normandale Community College.

Prepare for Delays: Northbound I-35W Ramp and I-94 Lane Closures (October 28–November 29)

If you travel to campus via northbound I-35W and I-94 in Minneapolis, you will need to plan your route in advance and give yourself additional travel time starting October 28.

Beginning at 5 a.m. on Monday, October 28, the ramp from northbound I-35W to eastbound I-94 will be closed through Friday, November 29. Both directions of I-94 will also be reduced to two lanes between 11th Avenue South and Franklin Avenue Southeast.

The lane and ramp closures are necessary to allow crews to build crossovers to shift traffic during construction on I-94 in 2025. Crews will be doing maintenance and repair work on five bridges along I-94 in Minneapolis. These bridges include:

– I-94 bridge (Dartmouth Bridge) that spans the Mississippi River
– Riverside Avenue bridge over I-94
– I-94 over Cedar Avenue
– I-94 over the Light Rail Transit (Blue Line)
– I-94 over Hwy 55/Hiawatha Ave.

During construction in 2025, motorists can expect I-94 to be reduced to two lanes in each direction between Hwy 55/Hiawatha Avenue and the Franklin Avenue bridge over I-94. Crews will also need to temporarily close ramps along I-94 at Huron Blvd, Riverside Avenue, Cedar Avenue, and 6th and 7th streets near downtown Minneapolis. When construction is completed in fall 2025, these five bridges along I-94 will have a smoother and safer riding surface.

Enemy of the People Performing in Eight Days

Come see Enemy of the People! (A musical adaptation)

Performance dates are Nov 1-2 and 7-9 at 7PM, Nov 10 at 3PM
Location: Tjornhom-Nelson Theater
Students are just $5!! General Public is $12 and other Augsburg Community is $10!

An Enemy of the People examines how a community responds when the local doctor threatens to expose that the town’s water source they rely on for tourism is contaminated. It raises questions of how far a community will go to protect their town’s secret so they can keep tourism dollars coming and circumvent a path to financial ruin. Scenes and songs will happen in close proximity to the audience, compelling them to feel as if they are part of the story. Immersed in the play’s dilemma, audiences will find themselves part of the climactic ending of the play when they actually vote to shape the ending of the story.
