On Monday, January 17, 2022 Augsburg University will host its annual MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. CONVOCATION from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. in the Hoversten Chapel with additional seating and viewing via livestream in Sateren Auditorium. This year the convocation theme is “Storytelling: Connecting Our Stories”. Through the keynote speaker, gospel choir, spoken word artist, soloist, and dancers, this longtime tradition in the Black community will be lifted up as a powerful symbol of healing and resisting.

Laura Swanson Lindahl, director of marketing, will be leaving the shared services marketing and communication team that serves Augsburg University and Luther Seminary on January 18. She will be taking on a new role as director of marketing and communication at Metro State University in St. Paul. Laura has served Augsburg for nearly a decade, and the seminary since the shared services agreement began in 2017. At her request and due to the pandemic, there won’t be a large in-person farewell gathering. Instead, I invite colleagues to submit their congratulations and well wishes using the Google Form below. URGO Summer Research – Phase 1 Applications Due February 16

Are you looking for a paid summer research or creative activity opportunity here on campus? URGO applications for 2022 summer research are now available on the URGO website at http://www.augsburg.edu/urgo/research/on-campus-research/ All fields of study welcome!

We have multiple summer opportunities available for students.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
The URGO Summer Research Program is an 11-week, on-campus program (May 12th – July 27th) where students are funded to conduct research with a faculty mentor. Students receive support throughout the research process from their faculty mentor, a Speaker Series, and weekly seminars with fellow researchers. URGO provides full-time summer researchers (400 hours) with a $6,000 stipend and housing discount while half-time researchers (200 hours) receive a $3,000 stipend and a housing discount.

URGO SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
URGO also provides funding for students to work for a professor as a research assistant on an ongoing research project. This is a 100-hour commitment over the course of the summer and comes with a $1,500 stipend. This is an excellent opportunity to try out research for the first time or focus on a specific aspect of a research project.

Phase 1 of the applications are due February 16th at 11:59 PM, so start talking with your faculty members to learn about what research is going on in your department!

Counseling Walk-in Hours Now Available at CWC

Starting this semester, the Center for Wellness and Counseling (CWC) will be holding weekly walk-in counseling hours. Walk-in hours are Mondays 10:00-12:00, Wednesdays 1:00-3:00, and Thursdays 1:00-3:00 anytime classes are in session. Walk-in hours will be virtual in order to maintain the health and safety of the campus, but students must come directly to CWC to access walk-in hours (a virtual space will be provided in our office suite). Walk-in appointments will be brief (20-30 minutes) and will be offered on a first come, first served basis. Walk-in appointments are ideal for students looking for a quick and easy way to get started in counseling, students in need of crisis support, or students who desire a one-time non-judgemental perspective when considering an immediate decision or problem. Free Trip to Holocaust Museum Through the MINNE Fellowship

The MINNE Holocaust Fellows program selects college students to participate in a fully-paid, one-day trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust. Fellows tour the permanent exhibits and featured exhibits, as well as meet with a museum representative. Awards come through the MINNE Fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, who has chosen Augsburg to be one of the select universities to participate in the program.

The 2022 trip will take place on April 5, 2022. Applications are due on February 21, 2022 and can be found at https://jewishminneapolis.org/minne/. If you would like to learn more about the program or would like advising on the application, please contact the URGO office at urgo@augsburg.edu.

Augsburg Campus Ministries invites you to participate in its alternative spring break to Albuquerque, New Mexico, one of the oldest cities in the United States. Albuquerque has a unique multicultural history and heritage with Native American and Hispanic and Latino cultural influences. The city is located in north central New Mexico near the Sandia Mountains.
While in Albuquerque, we will be partnering with Service Learning Camps, and our days will be structured with community service projects, time for reflection, learning opportunities, and visiting local attractions.

Facilities Management Updates

Wondering about the new cloud of steam on campus? The steamwork diversion in December, which allowed repairs to be made without a shutoff, was made possible thanks to a new steam outlet installation in front of the ice arena.

The LED upgrade work got underway again the week of January 3. During the week beginning January 10, upgrades will be made to the Oren Gateway Center and the Foss Lobeck Miles Center.

A new floor is being installed in the wrestling room in the Kennedy Center.

This competitive program awards up to 6 scholarships for Spring 2022 (totaling $8000), in the following areas:
1. Emerging Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $1000 to encourage students
whose course of study shows progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship
program.
2. Enhanced Scholarship (Sophomore-Senior): Scholarships of $2000 to support students
who have shown considerable progress in meeting the criteria of this scholarship
program.

Strong candidates for the grant will be students who…
– are a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics,
computer science, pre-engineering, or mathematics/science education;
– can demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership within their major area; and
– show an interest in contributing to NASA’s mission.

Farewell wishes for Laura Swanson Lindahl

Laura Swanson Lindahl, director of marketing, will be leaving the shared services marketing and communication team that serves Augsburg University and Luther Seminary on January 18. She will be taking on a new role as director of marketing and communication at Metro State University in St. Paul. Laura has served Augsburg for nearly a decade, and the seminary since the shared services agreement began in 2017. In the fall of 2020 Augsburg received a grant from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEER) to provide technology resources to students and faculty in need with a particular focus on “students and faculty who are indigenous or people of color; low-income; or disabled. A broader target population is all students and faculty at Augsburg University.”

Students can just come to the library and check out the items as priority has already been given to the grant focus population.

CONVOCATION from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. in the Hoversten Chapel with additional seating and viewing via livestream in Sateren Auditorium. This year the convocation theme is “Storytelling: Connecting Our Stories”. Through the keynote speaker, gospel choir, spoken word artist, soloist, and dancers, this longtime tradition in the Black community will be lifted up as a powerful symbol of healing and resisting.

GEER Grant Technology Still Available for Checkout at the Library for Students and Faculty

In the fall of 2020 Augsburg received a grant from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEER) to provide technology resources to students and faculty in need with a particular focus on “students and faculty who are indigenous or people of color; low-income; or disabled. A broader target population is all students and faculty at Augsburg University.”

Students can just come to the library and check out the items as priority has already been given to the grant focus population.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University that provides academic competitive debate programming to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities.

Our new debate season begins very soon! Middle school debate tournaments will happen from January-March, and we need your help to make it happen!

Judges observe debate rounds, pick a winner, and provide feedback to both teams. No experience needed- we’ll train you! We’re looking for all people who are interested in supporting students as they improve their argumentation and public speaking skills.

Earn Credits Spring ’22 Online Courses in Playwriting

Take an online course in playwriting with real-world playwrights from around the country! This unique opportunity is available to Augsburg students through our relationship with the prestigious Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis.

There are a few spots remaining on the spring 2022 semester courses:

*Playwriting: Exploring the Writer’s Theatrical Voice, PWC300; and

*Topics in Playwriting: Human Rights and Social Justice, PWC310

There is a short application to fill out to be enrolled in the course as seats are limited. Deadline has been extended to January 3rd, or until seats are full. Courses count as Augsburg courses and can be taken as part of an Auggie’s regular semester load.

Counseling and Crisis Support During Break (and Anytime CWC is Closed)

For many the holiday season can be one of rest and joy, while for others it can be a time of stress, sadness, and loneliness. Knowing this, and in anticipation of the long winter break during which the CWC office is closed, we wanted to remind the campus community of an important source of support available when our office is closed (for long breaks as well as simply during weekends and evenings). Any time CWC is closed, phone counseling and crisis support are available to students by calling CWC’s main line (612-330-1707) and pressing #1. We urge you to use this resource now, during the break, and any time it might be useful during the academic year. And we wish you a break that is what you need it to be.

Steam Shutoff Repairs and LED Light Upgrade Updates

The steam repair mentioned in A-mail last week did not require a steam shutoff to campus buildings after all. The steam is being diverted from Riverside Avenue onto our property.

The LED upgrade work has been suspended until January 3, when work will resume on Sverdrup and Old Main.

As campus slows down between semesters, there will be no Facilities update postings until January 10.

Attend the Annual MLK Jr. Convocation

On Monday, January 17, 2022 Augsburg University will host its annual MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. CONVOCATION from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. in the Hoversten Chapel with additional seating and viewing via livestream in Sateren Auditorium. This year the convocation theme is “Storytelling: Connecting Our Stories”. Through the keynote speaker, gospel choir, spoken word artist, soloist, and dancers, this longtime tradition in the Black community will be lifted up as a powerful symbol of healing and resisting.
