ED Talk December 3: “Why is Financial Literacy Important for Student Success?”

submitted by reederm@augsburg.edu

Financial literacy matters! Marc McIntosh, Associate Professor of Business Administration, will discuss the relationship between financial literacy and student success. Many students make financial decisions with little understanding of their implications. A basic understanding of finance will help students, and the faculty and staff advising them, to avoid potentially harmful life-altering decisions

CTL will offer ED Talks (based on the concept of TED Talks) before each faculty meeting from 3:10-3:30pm over Zoom (link provided below; Augsburg login required). This year’s theme is “The Future of the Professoriate at Augsburg”, and 2021-2022 Ed talks will be framed under this broad theme that speaks to our “new normal” and beyond.

Personal Care Assistants Needed

submitted by barrienb@augsburg.edu

Hi! My name is Bella and I am a second year student here at Augsburg studying graphic design. I am currently trying to find personal care assistants to help me in my day to day life here on campus. This would include getting me ready for the day, helping me get set up for class and assisting me around campus. I am currently looking for people who would want to work some hours during this Fall and Spring semester! If you are a pre-med or nursing student, this is a great opportunity to get experience with patient care. Plus, you get to be paid to have fun!

I really enjoy getting coffee, watching Netflix, drawing, and painting. I consider all my assistants as my friends and if you work for me, you are guaranteed a good time! If you are interested, please text me at: 612-345-2855 or email me at barrienb@augsburg.edu. Hope you will join!

“Coded Bias” Film Screening with Filmmaker Q & A Shalini Kantayya

submitted by hansonjl@augsburg.edu

Ever wonder how facial recognition technology works? Does artificial intelligence have a bias? Explore these questions and more as filmmaker Shalini Kantayya explores algorithmic oppression and what can be done about it.

Thursday, Dec. 2nd

5:30 Snacks
6:00 pm “Coded Bias”
7:30 pm Virtual Q&A with filmmaker Shalini Kantayya
HAGFORS 150A & B

About the Film
When MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini discovers that many facial recognition technologies misclassify women and darker-skinned faces, she is compelled to investigate further and start the Algorithmic Justice League. It turns out that artificial intelligence, which was defined by a homogeneous group of men, is not neutral. What Buolamwini learns about widespread bias in algorithms drives her to push the U.S. government to create the first-ever legislation to counter the far-reaching dangers of bias in a technology that is steadily encroaching on our lives. Centering on the voices of women leading the charge to ensure our civil rights are protected, Coded Bias asks two key questions: what is the impact of Artificial Intelligence’s increasing role in governing our liberties? And what are the consequences for people stuck in the crosshairs due to their race, color, and gender?

This event is sponsored by the Department of Communication Studies, Film, and New Media and the the Department Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science.

Changes to Google Instant Messaging

submitted by matthias@augsburg.edu

Happy Cyber Monday! Augsburg has switched to Google’s newest platform for Instant Messaging – Google Chat. This keeps Augsburg in line with Google’s roadmap and provides better integration between instant messaging and other Google products. The most noticeable changes are a slightly different interface on your Google mail screen and the discontinuation of the Google “Hangouts” mobile application. Check out Google Chat Help to learn more. Please contact your LFC or the techdesk if you have any additional questions.
