Whether you need to update your documents or you are starting from scratch, the Strommen Center can help! Head over to Christensen Center, Suite 100 (across from Einstein’s) and meet with Ariana, Owen, Natty, or Pa Houa. They’re available to assist you Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9am-2pm and Thursdays 9-11am.

Special note: Drop-in hours are 9am-12pm today (Friday, December 3rd).

Interested in Hosting International Students for Dinner?

A new semester is just around the corner, and luckily we are expecting new international students to join us this spring—representing countries like Egypt, Sweden, China, South Korea & Norway to name a few!

Our office, the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), is looking for faculty and staff members who are interested in hosting our new international students for a dinner off-campus in your home.

Here are the details:
Date: Thursday, Jan 6, 2021
Time: Pick up at 5 p.m. with a return to campus around 7 p.m.

We ask that our hosts pick up students from campus and return them once dinner is completed. The new incoming group will consist of 5+ international students.

COVID status: All the new international students coming from abroad are required to follow the CDC and MDH guidelines, with a required 7-day quarantine (unvaccinated students), and COVID testing on day 3-5 upon arrival.

All students will show proof of a negative COVID test prior to traveling to the United States (tested 72 hours before departure), proof of recovery and/or proof of vaccination.

Any students needing quarantine, will have ended this period on January 6. And will have been offered to receive their first dose of the vaccine.

Bookstore Accounts are Open for Spring — Here’s What You Need to Know

Bookstore charge accounts will open the day after you’ve registered for spring term. The last day to charge online orders is Sunday, January 16th, 2022. The last day to charge in-store purchases is Wednesday, January 19th, 2022. Due to the financial aid cycle, you can only charge expenses to your bookstore account during this specific period. Be sure to plan ahead!

Financial literacy matters! Marc McIntosh, Associate Professor of Business Administration, will discuss the relationship between financial literacy and student success. Many students make financial decisions with little understanding of their implications. A basic understanding of finance will help students, and the faculty and staff advising them, to avoid potentially harmful life-altering decisions

Developing Student Writing Skills in the Disciplines, TODAY 9 a.m.

Are you interested in helping students to achieve better writing skills in your courses or across your curriculum? Join Jennifer Forsthoefel (English) and Ben Denkinger (Psychology, Assessment) on Thursday, December 2nd at 9am for a live Zoom presentation and discussion on best practices in writing instruction across disciplines. We will present data from a recent survey of over 100 Augsburg faculty on the kinds of writing they assign and how they assess it. We will also discuss best practices for writing instruction based on recommendations by the International Network of Writing Across the Curriculum Programs and the Council of Writing Program Administrators, among others. We will then evaluate new ways of building upon our students’ developing writing skills in our own disciplines and programs.

Guest speaker, Christine Ha, and board members from Thó Wiŋ Magazine will be giving a presentation about the publishing and editing industry and the importance of telling diverse stories. The Thó Wiŋ Magazine board members connect more specifically to Thó Wiŋ Magazine and their goals at Augsburg; Christine Ha will share her experiences with the local publishing community and her hopes as an individual for the broader industry.

Developing Student Writing Skills in the Disciplines, Dec. 2 at 9 a.m.

Are you interested in helping students to achieve better writing skills in your courses or across your curriculum? Join Jennifer Forsthoefel (English) and Ben Denkinger (Psychology, Assessment) on Thursday, December 2nd at 9am for a live Zoom presentation and discussion on best practices in writing instruction across disciplines. We will present data from a recent survey of over 100 Augsburg faculty on the kinds of writing they assign and how they assess it. We will also discuss best practices for writing instruction based on recommendations by the International Network of Writing Across the Curriculum Programs and the Council of Writing Program Administrators, among others. We will then evaluate new ways of building upon our students’ developing writing skills in our own disciplines and programs.

One of our biggest programs is our summer camp. We have several summer positions/internships available as well as opportunities for volunteers. As we begin planning for our upcoming summer camp in 2022 we like to connect with students that might be interested in summer work.

Also, being a college located in the cities, our Eden Prairie location has year-round part-time positions available in food service, hospitality and direct support for students looking for very part-time position throughout the year as well.

The last day to charge in-store purchases is Wednesday, January 19th, 2022. Due to the financial aid cycle, you can only charge expenses to your bookstore account during this specific period. Come play in the world of Into the Woods! Learn about our approach to the spring musical; have fun with improvisational games and musical rhythms; and get to know others who are interested in the spring musical. As we explore the world of Into the Woods, we’ll also explore your vision and how it may fit into the approach we are taking to magic and transformation!

The workshops will be taking place:

You only have to attend one of the dates!

The Minnesota Urban Debate League, a program of Augsburg University, provides academic competitive debate to 1,000+ students in the Twin Cities.

We are proud to present our 9th annual Mayors’ Challenge Debate Fundraising Breakfast: The Great Water Debate. This event will be hosted virtually by Augsburg University on Monday, December 13th, 2021.

Four of our debaters from Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Roseville school districts will face off in two teams, articulating arguments on how we steward one of our greatest resources – water.

Our VIP panel of judges (and you!) will pick the most persuasive team.

You will also see how the MNUDL creates new opportunities for our students to be champions – both in and out of the classroom.

Governor Tim Walz (Invited) and Minnesota First Lady Gwen Walz will host the Governor’s table. Mayor Melvin Carter, Mayor Jacob Frey, and special guests will judge our debate. You have a chance to join them as a VIP judge with your sponsorship!

Dr. Bryan Dewsbury is an Associate Professor of Biology and Associate Director of the STEM Transformation Institute at Florida International University. He is Principal Investigator of the Science Education And Society (SEAS) research program where his team explores questions around the social contexts of teaching and learning. He is a faculty developer who has conducted workshops and trainings at over 85 institutions across North America. He is an advisory board member and fellow of several national education reform institutions including the John N. Gardner Institute where he helps supports institutions of higher education undergoing transformation particularly as it pertains to inclusive educational practices.

Join Jennifer Forsthoefel (English) and Ben Denkinger (Psychology, Assessment) on Thursday, December 2nd at 9am for a live Zoom presentation and discussion on best practices in writing instruction across disciplines. We will present data from a recent survey of over 100 Augsburg faculty on the kinds of writing they assign and how they assess it. We will also discuss best practices for writing instruction based on recommendations by the International Network of Writing Across the Curriculum Programs and the Council of Writing Program Administrators, among others. We will then evaluate new ways of building upon our students’ developing writing skills in our own disciplines and programs.

About the Film
When MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini discovers that many facial recognition technologies misclassify women and darker-skinned faces, she is compelled to investigate further and start the Algorithmic Justice League. It turns out that artificial intelligence, which was defined by a homogeneous group of men, is not neutral. What Buolamwini learns about widespread bias in algorithms drives her to push the U.S. government to create the first-ever legislation to counter the far-reaching dangers of bias in a technology that is steadily encroaching on our lives. Centering on the voices of women leading the charge to ensure our civil rights are protected, Coded Bias asks two key questions: what is the impact of Artificial Intelligence’s increasing role in governing our liberties? And what are the consequences for people stuck in the crosshairs due to their race, color, and gender?

Bookstore Accounts are Open for Spring — Here’s What You Need to Know

Bookstore charge accounts will open the day after you’ve registered for spring term. The last day to charge online orders is Sunday, January 16th, 2022. The last day to charge in-store purchases is Wednesday, January 19th, 2022. Due to the financial aid cycle, you can only charge expenses to your bookstore account during this specific period. Be sure to plan ahead!

Happy Cyber Monday! Augsburg has switched to Google’s newest platform for Instant Messaging – Google Chat. This keeps Augsburg in line with Google’s roadmap and provides better integration between instant messaging and other Google products. The most noticeable changes are a slightly different interface on your Google mail screen and the discontinuation of the Google “Hangouts” mobile application. Come play in the world of Into the Woods! Learn about our approach to the spring musical; have fun with improvisational games and musical rhythms; and get to know others who are interested in the spring musical. As we explore the world of Into the Woods, we’ll also explore your vision and how it may fit into the approach we are taking to magic and transformation!
