Americans encounter more religious diversity at work than in any other sphere of life, yet religion is too often left out of the diversity conversation. Many of us are uncomfortable talking about religion at work because we are afraid of offending our colleagues or wading into uncertain legal territory, but engaging religious diversity can lead to stronger team culture and better relationships with clients and consumers. Join Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC) for a Professional Development Lab that will give you the chance to explore issues of religious identity and diversity at work, develop your interfaith skillset, and create an action plan for how you will engage religious and secular identity in your workplace.

ACR has a wide range of positions; from flexible direct care that offers hands-on patient care experience and competitive pay, to management with a rent-free live-in option. Interfaith Ally Workshop on November 11

The Interfaith Ally Workshop provides participants with the opportunity to learn about a wide range of faiths and ethical traditions including Native Spirituality, Judaism, Islam, Hybrid, Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism and Atheism. Participants will hear the stories of community members from a variety of traditions and have the opportunity to learn through case studies. This workshop qualifies as an equity/inclusion event to help maintain good standing in the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program. The Interfaith Ally Workshop is a program of Interfaith at Augsburg and Campus Ministry.

Free Media Training for Women Interested in Politics

Ready to Run Minnesota, which is part of a national network of nonpartisan campaign training programs designed to encourage women to run for office and to encourage all of us to support increased representation of women in politics. This year, there will be a series of monthly (October-February) virtual training sessions over the lunch hour on Fridays. You will learn about fundraising, receive media training, and gain other important skills…all for free.

The next session is Friday, November 5th at noon and will cover strategies for dealing with the media.

Workshop on Friday Nov. 12: Applying for Paid Research Experiences in STEM

Want to learn more about off-campus research opportunities in STEM? The National Science Foundation supports programs called Research Experiences for Undergraduates or REUs.

On Friday, November 12, from 4:00 – 5:30 PM, Dixie Shafer of URGO will lead a workshop on how to search for and apply to paid off-campus Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) programs in STEM fields.

This will be a virtual event designed to help students learn more about how to search for and apply to summer research opportunities nationally as well as locally.

Bioarchaeology of Bronze Age Social Systems
The Bioarchaeology of Bronze Age Social Systems NSF-REU Site (Award #1852426) supports the training of undergraduate students in conducting collaborative research– from hypothesis formation to data collection, analysis, public outreach, and publication. Complementary instruction in professional development, ethics, and statistical modules are also incorporated in the program’s curriculum.

Housed at the Center for Archaeological Studies at the University of South Alabama, teams of students collaborate with an interdisciplinary group of dynamic scientists while conducting original research on two Arabian Bronze Age skeletal collections (2400-2100 BCE) over an eight-week period. As part of these independent research projects, students will examine how alternative pathways to social complexity were embodied in ancient human skeletal remains and reflected in burial traditions.

Nov 10: Annual Thor Heyerdahl Conference 2021: Migration and Identity

You are invited to attend the Thor Heyerdahl International Day 2021 conference to be held virtually on Wednesday, November 10th from 9:00-15:30 CET.

The conference is a collaboration between the Thor Heyerdahl Institute, the Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Oslo, our Augsburg University (USA), and Vestfold & Telemark County Council. The conference will focus on the global subject of “Migration and Identity.”

President Paul Pribbenow will hold a session titled: Hospitality is not Enough: Equity and Inclusion in Higher Education.

The conference focuses on the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Reduced Inequalities (10), Sustainable Cities and Communities (11), Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (16), and Partnerships for the Goals (17).

During the June 9, 2020 University Town Hall, President Pribbenow announced seven new equity initiatives born out of response to the murder of George Floyd and Augsburg’s renewed commitment to accelerate and expand upon our university’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion during a national moment of racial and social justice reawakening. The Minnesota Urban Debate League is proud to present our 9th annual Mayors Challenge Debate Fundraising Breakfast: The Great Water Debate. This event will be hosted virtually by Augsburg University.

Four of our debaters from Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Roseville school districts will face off in two teams, articulating arguments on how we steward one of our greatest resources – water.

Our VIP panel of judges (and you!) will pick the most persuasive team.

You will also see how the MNUDL creates new opportunities for our students to be champions – both in and out of the classroom.

Governor Tim Walz (Invited) and Minnesota First Lady Gwen Walz will host the Governor’s table. Mayor Melvin Carter, Mayor Jacob Frey, and special guests will judge our debate. You have a chance to join them as a VIP judge with your sponsorship!

We will hold an All Saints service in chapel November 5 at 10:40 am. The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. At this service we praise God for the saints who’ve gone before us, especially honoring ones who have been personally significant in our faith. We’ll also remember those who have died, especially in this past year. We celebrate and remember through song and prayer. Please submit names you would like included in the service to the campus ministry office by emailing Janice Dames at dames@augsburg.edu by noon on November 4.

Congrats Auggies – Student Voting Rates Went Up

Every four years the Institute for Democracy and Higher Education publishes reports on voting rates for colleges and universities, and the 2020 report just came out last week. Augsburg’s report shows that our student voting rate went up 3.7% from 2016 to 2020, and 77.3% of eligible Augsburg students voted compared to 66% of college and university students nationwide.

Let’s keep our numbers growing as we demonstrate high participation in this aspect of civic engagement. Remember: tomorrow is the last day to vote in the 2021 elections, and you can register the same day.

LearningWorks is a chapter within Breakthrough Collaborative which comprises 25 sites across the country. Its overall mission is to launch high potential middle school students on the path to college, while also inspiring talented high school and college students to pursue careers in education.

At LearningWorks, we achieve this mission by using a “students-teaching-students” model. During our 9 weeks of summer programming, 35 talented high school and college students work as teachers, advisors, and mentors for 120 middle school students from Minneapolis Public Schools. LearningWorks teachers are creative, diverse, intelligent, and highly motivated. They represent many academic and personal backgrounds, but share a commitment to students and educational equity. LearningWorks is a Breakthrough site in the heart of downtown Minneapolis. Every summer, it offers:

· 100+ hours of professional development
· 65 hours of lead classroom teaching
· Autonomy to develop your own curriculum and course content
· Leadership opportunities in committee-structures and program planning
· Your own classroom for 6 intensive weeks

Augsburg Is a 20-Year Top Producer of Gilman Scholars

Augsburg University was recognized last week by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs for being a top producer of Gilman Scholarship winners
over the last 20 years in the “small institutions” category.

60 Augsburg students have used Gilman awards toward a study abroad experience since 2001!

This amazing accomplishment would not have been possible without the dedication of MANY people on campus to Gilman’s mission to make study abroad more accessible and inclusive. Special thanks to Leah Spinosa de Vega for recognizing the potential for Gilman winners at Augsburg many years ago, and putting the building blocks in place. Thanks also to all the staff in the TRIO office for collaborating on workshops each semester and tirelessly identifying and encouraging great applicants. Their work to promote student success stories has helped more Auggies SEE themselves as a Gilman winner.

Even during this pandemic time when many study abroad experiences have been interrupted and even Gilman awards were not available due to COVID, Augsburg staff and faculty can be proud that so many Auggies have had transformative experiences abroad thanks to Gilman scholarships.

Established in 2001, the U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program has provided scholarships to outstanding U.S. undergraduate students who, due to financial constraints, might not otherwise participate. Since the program’s inception, more than 34,000 Gilman Scholars have studied or interned in more than 155 countries.

Mary Elise Lowe, Professor of Religion, named Batalden Scholar

It is my pleasure to announce that Mary Elise Lowe, professor of religion, has been named the next Batalden Faculty Scholar in Applied Ethics. Mary’s appointment will take effect with the Spring 2022 semester.

Mary’s focus as Batalden Scholar will be on “embodied ethics” – an expansive category that includes traditional sexual ethics as well as questions of embodiment that are often excluded from traditional Christian ethics. These include inquiries regarding the ways humans relate to other creatures as well as intersectional topics such as disability/ability, race, body image, and human relationships. Mary brings an interest in convocations that feature multiple perspectives and panels of speakers and sees opportunities to engage questions of embodied ethics across the disciplines. She hopes to create a working group for faculty who are interested in integrating embodied ethical reflection into upper-division courses and will seek ways to create new space for ethics conversations among Augsburg staff and within our student services community.

The Batalden Faculty Scholar Program in Applied Ethics is designed to strengthen the infusion of ethics and values into our campus lives, so that ethical discourse and practice is enhanced as a hallmark of Augsburg’s students, faculty, staff and alumni. The Program is funded by an endowment established by Abner Batalden, Class of 1936, and supported today by his family.

Interfaith Ally Workshop on November 11

The Interfaith Ally Workshop provides participants with the opportunity to learn about a wide range of faiths and ethical traditions including Native Spirituality, Judaism, Islam, Hybrid, Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism and Atheism. Participants will hear the stories of community members from a variety of traditions and have the opportunity to learn through case studies. This workshop qualifies as an equity/inclusion event to help maintain good standing in the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program. The Interfaith Ally Workshop is a program of Interfaith at Augsburg and Campus Ministry.

Congratulations to our three Auggie Pride Award winners for the month of October- Emily Long, Ashley Adegeye, and Elizabeth Charnell, three staff members in the residence life department. The opening of the residence halls this year was one of the smoothest in the past 15 years. The praise goes to the leadership of Emily Long, Director of Residence Life, a new staff member who had not seen the process ever before. The praise also goes to Ashley Adegeye, Residence Hall Director, and Elizabeth Charnell, Residence Business Manager. They have continued their work now throughout the semester. They prioritized the student staff experience, challenging them with great expectations and supporting them with great care. In addition, Emily, Ashley, and Elizabeth provided resident students with responsiveness and respect. Our staff senate is excited to recognize them for all of their efforts!! Join Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC) for a Professional Development Lab that will give you the chance to explore issues of religious identity and diversity at work, develop your interfaith skillset, and create an action plan for how you will engage religious and secular identity in your workplace.

Performances will be held Today and Tomorrow at 7pm in the Foss Center!

Additionally, we will not be accepting late seating, so make sure to arrive at least 20 minutes before the performance.

AGB Search firm has been engaged to assist with the provost search. Representatives from AGB Search are inviting faculty to participate in listening sessions. Listening sessions will be offered, via Zoom, on Mon. Nov. 1, 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. and Thur. Nov. 4, 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.

Ellyn Peters, 18’ Chemistry, earning her PhD in Organic Chemistry at the University of Utah, recently co-published a research article, “Univariate classification of phosphine ligation state and reactivity in cross-coupling catalysis,” in Science. In her time at Augsburg, Ellie conducted research with Dr. Mike Wentzel over the course of two summers, one summer sponsored by donor Dr. Terry Lindstrom and one sponsored by Give to the Max. Ellie also was a lab supervisor, peer mentor, teaching assistant, and Gyberg Fellow.

Dear faculty and staff,

I write to share the sad news that Patricia (“Pat”) Parker, former associate academic dean and instructor in library science, passed away on October 20. Pat joined Augsburg in 1960, was appointed associate academic dean in 1978, and retired in 1991.

Pat received the bachelor of arts degree from Eastern Michigan University and the master of arts and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. She was a strong advocate for equity and women’s rights. As associate academic dean, she helped develop Augsburg’s Weekend College. She is survived by two daughters, Sarah ’80, ’89, and Jackie Cherryhomes Tyler ’76. Her daughter Jackie is Regent Emerita of the Augsburg Board of Regents, served as President of the Minneapolis City Council, and ran for mayor of Minneapolis in 2013.

Boyd Koehler, emeritus professor and librarian, offers these words about his mentor of many years: “Pat Parker was an early, profound, and articulate advocate of diversity. She championed authors of color through her teaching of children’s literature, thereby enlightening so many future teachers in her very popular classes. She also made a point of helping so many students of color–and countless others–achieve a high comfort level in her classes, and she demonstrated a genuine concern for their academic and social success.”

The Augsburg English Department congratulates alum Brad Hagen, who has been selected by the Saint Paul Almanac and the University of St. Thomas Sustainable Communities Partnership to co-curate and develop a storytelling contest, “The Power of Storytelling for Environmental Justice in Our Communities.” The Partnership notes that “this contest seeks to bring awareness and inspire creative storytelling around the theme of environmental justice. In Minnesota, along with every state in the nation, Black, Brown, Indigenous and low-wealth communities are disproportionately affected by climate change and environmental pollution. We need storytelling that speaks to our communities’ lived experiences. This contest will encourage the community to create and share challenging and joyful narratives to combat environmental injustice and work towards an environmentally just future.” The contest will be open to Minnesotans of all ages.

Brad, an exemplary Augsburg alum, is currently at the University of Minnesota pursuing his MFA in Creative Writing. Last year, he taught Intro to Creative Writing, and this year he’s teaching Multicultural Literature of the United States. His thesis is a memoir, and he has been working closely with well-known Minnesota author Kao Kalia Yang, the Edelstein-Keller Writer in Residence. Brad is also working toward an Ojibwe language certification at the U and remains deeply committed to serving his community, through his continued work with Indian Education.
