Hi! My name is Bella and I am a second year student here at Augsburg studying graphic design. I am currently trying to find personal care assistants to help me in my day to day life here on campus. This would include getting me ready for the day, helping me get set up for class and assisting me around campus. I am currently looking for people who would want to work some hours during this Fall semester! On Friday, October 1, Campus Ministry will have a Blessing of the Animals service in Hoversten Chapel at 10:40 am as we celebrate St. Francis of Assisi, Patron Saint of Animals. Our service will include a lively blessing ritual of animals and pets to honor St. Francis’ devotion to all God’s creatures.

We invite students, staff, and faculty to bring their animals for a blessing that morning, but we would also like to have a slideshow of some of our dear animal friends. Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations. The purpose of the JSI Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of six participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, University of Washington or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2022 and August 2023. To be competitive for this opportunity, students should have a 3.5 GPA or above. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

It’s difficult to remember a time when there was order and expectation. Uncertainty and chaos feel like the norm. Problems seem too big to overcome, and words are too weak to point a way forward. How do we speak of God? How do we live in the face of chaos? As we begin a new season, let us reflect on a God who creates in the chaos and becomes flesh in the face of empire.

Brian Bantum, PhD, writes, speaks, and teaches on identity, racial imagination, creating spaces of justice, and the intersection of theology and embodiment for audiences around the United States. He is a contributing editor of The Christian Century and is the author of “Redeeming Mulatto: A Theology of Race and Christian Hybridity,” “The Death of Race: Building a New Christianity in a Racial World,” and “Choosing Us: Marriage and Mutual Flourishing in a World of Difference,” which he co-authored with his spouse, Gail Song Bantum.

Summer Language Study with Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully-funded eight to ten week language and cultural immersion program abroad in which students receive eight credits of intensive language instruction in less-commonly taught languages, as well as structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. CLS is part of a US State Department initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages critical to national security and economic prosperity. There are fifteen languages that applicants can select from.

The CLS Program seeks participants with diverse interests, and from a wide range of fields of study and career paths. Competitive applicants will need to be able to illustrate a commitment to language learning, a very strong academic record and potential to succeed in a rigorous academic setting, and ability to adapt to an intensive program and challenging cultural environment. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

The Return of Fellowship Fridays

How is the return to the not-so-normal classroom going? The pandemic is not over and resilience is not a given. But we are all in this together and we need to get out of it together. Student organizations, university departments/offices, individuals, and outside organizations may use University space to publicize events and meetings. Out of consideration for the right of free expression, the rights of viewers, civility, and respect, the following guidelines are to be followed when posting flyers and notices. The policies listed below only apply to flyers and notices posted in areas outside of the residence halls.

No direct or indirect promotion of alcohol, drugs, obscene material, or materials that would violate applicable laws or University policy is allowed.

All postings must be approved and dated before posting. Posters and flyers can be approved at the Copy Center, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. A maximum of 20 will be stamped and approved for posting on campus. If you submit a job through the copy request system we can apply a digital version of the stamp as we print.

Posting is only allowed on designated posting strips, bulletin boards and kiosks (where provided). All approved poster areas have a yellow/gold placard posted on them, if a poster board does not have this it belongs to a department and you will have to ask the department to post there. Postings are not permitted on any other surface or space, such as glass, doors, walls, windows etc.

Posters and flyers must be put up using push pins, tacks, or staples; no tape, duct tape or any other adhesive or fasteners may be used. Any posters will be charged for damages to walls and surfaces.

Only one poster per event is allowed on each board. Posters and flyers are allowed 2 weeks of display time. If you want to keep the posters after the two weeks are up you must take them down yourself, if you do not they will be recycled.

Science 123 Classroom Remodel Project and Return to Campus Updates

The Science 123 renovation project is making progress. When completed, the classroom will include the addition of new tiered platforms, chairs, and new carpeting and paint. The audio visual equipment is being updated as well. Updates will appear in A-Mail as the project continues.

Buildings with HVAC systems have been upgraded with MERV-13 filters circulating fresh air 24 hours a day. In buildings without central HVAC systems, HEPA filtration units have been added in office spaces. There are also HEPA filtration units in classrooms.

Staff and faculty in Memorial Hall can still request a window air conditioner by sending a Facilities request. Facilities will provide and install the unit, since the building doesn’t have central air conditioning.

At a time when the local Somali community is facing a crisis of opioid addiction, we will hear the perspectives of a community leader and educator, an expert in culturally responsive peer recovery support, and a student. In addition to learning more about the crisis we will focus on ways religious communities, health care providers and Augsburg are responding and might collaborate in the future. There will be time for questions from participants.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic debate programming to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities. Our mission is to empower students to become engaged learners, critical thinkers, and effective advocates for themselves and their communities.

We are looking for community coaches for the 2020-21 season. Community coaches are experienced debaters who want to share their expertise with students and collaborate with teacher coaches at our area schools. Applicants who competed in Policy/Cross-Examination, Classic, Parliamentary, Lincoln Douglas, or Public Forum debate as high schoolers/college students would be highly preferred.

We pay our coaches $2,250 for the September-December season and we pay judges $55 a day to judge.

Summer Language Study with Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully-funded eight to ten week language and cultural immersion program abroad in which students receive eight credits of intensive language instruction in less-commonly taught languages, as well as structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. CLS is part of a US State Department initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages critical to national security and economic prosperity. There are fifteen languages that applicants can select from.

The CLS Program seeks participants with diverse interests, and from a wide range of fields of study and career paths. Competitive applicants will need to be able to illustrate a commitment to language learning, a very strong academic record and potential to succeed in a rigorous academic setting, and ability to adapt to an intensive program and challenging cultural environment. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations. The purpose of the JSI Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of six participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, University of Washington or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2022 and August 2023. To be competitive for this opportunity, students should have a 3.5 GPA or above. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

MnDOT Updates 25th Avenue Bridge and I-94 West Work

MnDOT has had the 25th Avenue bridge fully closed for several weeks after a truck struck one of the beams. MnDOT opened the north side to traffic but the southbound side will remain closed at least until mid-October. It will require a more significant repair.
In addition, I-94 west is closed between Highway 280 and 25th Avenue from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly Wednesday, September 15, to Wednesday, October 6, for repairs to 25th Avenue bridge. This includes weekends. MnDOT apologizes for the inconvenience.

It’s difficult to remember a time when there was order and expectation. Uncertainty and chaos feel like the norm. Problems seem too big to overcome, and words are too weak to point a way forward. How do we speak of God? How do we live in the face of chaos? As we begin a new season, let us reflect on a God who creates in the chaos and becomes flesh in the face of empire.

Brian Bantum, PhD, writes, speaks, and teaches on identity, racial imagination, creating spaces of justice, and the intersection of theology and embodiment for audiences around the United States. He is a contributing editor of The Christian Century and is the author of “Redeeming Mulatto: A Theology of Race and Christian Hybridity,” “The Death of Race: Building a New Christianity in a Racial World,” and “Choosing Us: Marriage and Mutual Flourishing in a World of Difference,” which he co-authored with his spouse, Gail Song Bantum.

The Interfaith Ally Workshop provides participants with the opportunity to learn about a wide range of faiths and ethical traditions including Native Spirituality, Judaism, Islam, Hybrid, Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism and Atheism. Participants will hear the stories of community members from a variety of traditions and have the opportunity to learn through case studies. This workshop qualifies as an equity/inclusion event to help maintain good standing in the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program. The Interfaith Ally Workshop is a program of Interfaith at Augsburg and Campus Ministry.

Join the Echo, Our Student Newspaper (Paid Positions)

The Echo, Augsburg’s student-run newspaper, is looking for creative, outspoken, and passionate individuals to join our staff!*

The editor of our “Opinions” section is responsible for curating, editing and writing articles centered on Augsburg student and community opinions and stories. Some examples of Opinions content topics include political comics, critiques of Augsburg administration and leadership, experiences of marginalized identities, political views and more. Section editors are compensated $60 per issue, totaling $1200 for the whole year, and work approximately six hours total each week.

Other open positions include Managing Editor ($80/issue) and Outreach Coordinator ($60/issue)! These positions both work with our Executive Editor, Copy Editor, and Online Publishing Coordinator to keep the Echo running! Managing Editor is tasked with tracking our budget and assisting in final edits for the issue, while Outreach Coordinator helps promote our available articles, weekly meetings, and plan collaborations with other orgs!

*Pro tip: you do not need to be an expert in writing or editing to do well as an Echo editor. The Echo provides ample training and a welcoming team of support. If you’re interested, go for it!*

Have you ever thought about being an ethical hacker but didn’t know where to begin? NetSPI hires people for our 6-month immersive training program where we typically hire recent college grads or folks looking to make a career change. This 6-month program training program comes along with competitive pay and benefits typical with all full-time employees at NetSPI (including health, dental, vision, etc.). The training program is staged as an extension of the classroom – where we’ve had groups as small as 4 and as large as 16 learn all things pentesting. We typically gear the program towards web app pentesting with hopes of setting a strong foundation for our pentesters to learn and grow into different areas across our service lines. Once they reach the 6 months mark, they are reviewed via a lab to be considered for a promotion to a client facing penetration tester.

In this presentation we will share who we are (NetSPI), introduce ourselves and what we do, portray a day in the life as a pentester, and what growth at our organization looks like. There will be an interactive portion of the presentation and the opportunity to ask questions!

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic debate programming to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities. Our mission is to empower students to become engaged learners, critical thinkers, and effective advocates for themselves and their communities.

We are looking for community coaches for the 2020-21 season. Community coaches are experienced debaters who want to share their expertise with students and collaborate with teacher coaches at our area schools. Applicants who competed in Policy/Cross-Examination, Classic, Parliamentary, Lincoln Douglas, or Public Forum debate as high schoolers/college students would be highly preferred.

We pay our coaches $2,250 for the September-December season and we pay judges $55 a day to judge.

Transition in Campus Ministry Office

Peace be yours, beloved Augsburg community.
I have served as a campus pastor at Augsburg University these past eight years, and it has been my joy to accompany this community rooted in the Lutheran church but open to the dynamic and eclectic ways we encounter the Holy. With that said, September 30th will be my last day as co-pastor at Augsburg. My heart has called me back to parish ministry, and I will serve as one of the pastors at Grace University Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. I give thanks to God for my colleague and cherished friend, Pastor Babette Chatman, who will continue to lead Campus Ministry. Not to mention, the amazing staff team of Campus Ministry: Janice Dames (Administrative Assistant), Fardosa Hassan (Muslim Student Program Associate & Assistant Director of Interfaith Institute), Andrea Sorum (Chapel Musician), and Tori Remer (Pastoral Intern)!
