ED Talks are back! Tara Mader and Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright (ICD Workshop Leaders) will introduce you to (or remind you about) Integrated Course Design (ICD). ICD is an all-inclusive pedagogical mind-set that we’ve sometimes described as “advanced professor-ing”. Come see why we’re so passionate about this idea and how you can get paid to learn about and design your course using this system.

CTL will offer ED Talks (based on the concept of TED Talks) before each faculty meeting from 3:10-3:30pm over Zoom. This year’s theme is “The Future of the Professoriate at Augsburg”, and 2021-2022 Ed talks will be framed under this broad theme that speaks to our “new normal” and beyond.

Paid Summer Program to Study Public Policy

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The program was started to address the lack of diversity across the spectrum of professional public service, including government, nonprofits, public policy institutions, and international organizations. The purpose of the JSI Fellowship is to prepare students to obtain a Master’s or joint degree, in public policy, public administration, international affairs, or a related field.

Selected participants spend the summer at one of six participating universities (University of Minnesota, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, University of Washington or University of Michigan) where they take courses, learn from top leaders in the field and build their professional skills. Students must have junior or senior status and be planning to graduate between December 2022 and August 2023. To be competitive for this opportunity, students should have a 3.5 GPA or above. There is no cost to attend and participants receive a stipend.

**Due to the close proximity that theater rehearsals and productions require, the theater department is requiring Full Covid vaccinations in order to participate in the Fall and Spring productions. As a department, we are committed to the safety of all involved. This requirement is in line with national industry vaccine requirement standards.

You will need to memorize a 30 second piece (10-15 lines) of any text.

Summer Language Study with Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully-funded eight to ten week language and cultural immersion program abroad in which students receive eight credits of intensive language instruction in less-commonly taught languages, as well as structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. CLS is part of a US State Department initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages critical to national security and economic prosperity. There are fifteen languages that applicants can select from.

The CLS Program seeks participants with diverse interests, and from a wide range of fields of study and career paths. Competitive applicants will need to be able to illustrate a commitment to language learning, a very strong academic record and potential to succeed in a rigorous academic setting, and ability to adapt to an intensive program and challenging cultural environment. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Our mission is to empower students to become engaged learners, critical thinkers, and effective advocates for themselves and their communities.

We are looking for community coaches for the 2020-21 season. Community coaches are experienced debaters who want to share their expertise with students and collaborate with teacher coaches at our area schools. Applicants who competed in Policy/Cross-Examination, Classic, Parliamentary, Lincoln Douglas, or Public Forum debate as high schoolers/college students would be highly preferred.

We pay our coaches $2,250 for the September-December season and we pay judges $55 a day to judge.

Have you ever thought about being an ethical hacker but didn’t know where to begin? NetSPI hires people for our 6-month immersive training program where we typically hire recent college grads or folks looking to make a career change. This 6-month program training program comes along with competitive pay and benefits typical with all full-time employees at NetSPI (including health, dental, vision, etc.).

The training program is staged as an extension of the classroom – where we’ve had groups as small as 4 and as large as 16 learn all things pentesting. We typically gear the program towards web app pentesting with hopes of setting a strong foundation for our pentesters to learn and grow into different areas across our service lines. Once they reach the 6 months mark, they are reviewed via a lab to be considered for a promotion to a client facing penetration tester.

In this presentation we will share who we are (NetSPI), introduce ourselves and what we do, portray a day in the life as a pentester, and what growth at our organization looks like. There will be an interactive portion of the presentation and the opportunity to ask questions!

Plot: When his friend becomes the head curator at the prestigious museum, Gus is sure his break to be a renowned painter has arrived. However, things do not turn out as he hoped. He asks his boyfriend Tanner to connect him with Vanessa, an actress from improv class. Together they will create a masterpiece for the museum’s “New America” exhibit that will, hopefully, bring them to fame. “White” is a bold comedy using art to address head-on current issues of race, representation, gender, and sexuality.

Ticketing in Augsburg Lots Begins Sept. 12

Ticketing and towing from Augsburg owned parking lots for permit violations will begin on Sunday Sept 12. To avoid receiving a ticket or being towed from Augsburg owned parking lots you must have a current Augsburg parking permit, the permit must be displayed in your vehicle on your dashboard or hanging from the rear-view mirror with permit information facing out of the vehicle, and you must be parked in the correct parking lot (commuter, residential, staff/faculty).

If you do not have a current Augsburg parking permit a limited number of permits are still available for purchase through the Parking Services website. To purchase a permit, sign into Inside Augsburg and click the link for ‘Parking Services’ from the menu on the left and complete your profile by entering your vehicle and contact information. After you complete your profile, select the ‘Permits’ tab, read the disclaimer and click on ‘Agree’, then select the permit you want to purchase. After you submit payment for the permit you’ll receive an email within 72 hours notifying you that your permit is ready to be picked up at the Public Safety office.

If you are not eligible to purchase an Augsburg parking permit (such as residential first year students) or choose to not purchase a permit, your vehicle must be moved from the Augsburg owned parking lots and streets by 12:00 a.m. on Sunday September 12 to avoid receiving a ticket and/or being towed.

Chapel: Community Space Naming Loss and Seeking Healing

Join Campus Ministry and the Center for Wellness in Counseling today in Hoversten Chapel at 10:40 am in this interfaith time of community connection and shared healing at the outset of this academic year. Over the last year and half, the COVID-19 pandemic has generated deep loss among us and within our communities. We have witnessed the tragic loss of life on account of this disease around the globe, and some in our Augsburg community have experienced it intimately within their own circles of loved ones. We have also lost time and connection having navigated the complexities of lock-down, isolation, and ongoing social distancing. We have lost opportunities, hopes, and for many, a sense of security and wellbeing. These losses have taken their toll emotionally, physically, mentally.

On Friday, September 10 at 10:40 am, we as community will offer a time to publicly name our loss and seek healing pathways as we journey together as an Augsburg community. Our gathering will offer words of reflection alongside space for quiet and song. Every participant will have an opportunity to mark their own loss as another step on healing’s path. All are welcome.

As we start of the fall semester, there will be some changes to building access to help facilitate a transition back to campus and in-person instruction. The changes to building access began on 8/25 – please read below to see how building access will be changing.

The following buildings will be open to the public from 7 am – 7 pm and will be accessible by fob from 7 pm – 10 pm:

Each chapter begins with illustrative anecdotes, overviews the relevant research on student learning (in lay language), describes easy-to-implement teaching strategies, ideas, and activities to enhance student learning, and ends with a handy bullet list summary (great for skimming). This is a no-guilt book group. You are welcome at a session no matter how much or little of the reading you were able to complete.

STEM Peer Mentoring is a student-led mentoring program that focuses on providing support to First-years and Sophomores as they navigate their academic and professional careers in STEM.

Mentors in STEM Peer Mentoring can play a pivotal role in establishing the success of beginning STEM students. If you’re a rising Junior or Senior in a STEM major, enjoy being a leader and/or have lots of advice & resources to share — this is for you!! (Transfer students are also welcome!)

Ticketing in Augsburg Lots Begins Sept. 12

Ticketing and towing from Augsburg owned parking lots for permit violations will begin on Sunday Sept 12. To avoid receiving a ticket or being towed from Augsburg owned parking lots you must have a current Augsburg parking permit, the permit must be displayed in your vehicle on your dashboard or hanging from the rear-view mirror with permit information facing out of the vehicle, and you must be parked in the correct parking lot (commuter, residential, staff/faculty).

If you do not have a current Augsburg parking permit a limited number of permits are still available for purchase through the Parking Services website. To purchase a permit, sign into Inside Augsburg and click the link for ‘Parking Services’ from the menu on the left and complete your profile by entering your vehicle and contact information. After you complete your profile, select the ‘Permits’ tab, read the disclaimer and click on ‘Agree’, then select the permit you want to purchase. After you submit payment for the permit you’ll receive an email within 72 hours notifying you that your permit is ready to be picked up at the Public Safety office.

If you are not eligible to purchase an Augsburg parking permit (such as residential first year students) or choose to not purchase a permit, your vehicle must be moved from the Augsburg owned parking lots and streets by 12:00 a.m. on Sunday September 12 to avoid receiving a ticket and/or being towed.

Each chapter begins with illustrative anecdotes, overviews the relevant research on student learning (in lay language), describes easy-to-implement teaching strategies, ideas, and activities to enhance student learning, and ends with a handy bullet list summary (great for skimming). This is a no-guilt book group. You are welcome at a session no matter how much or little of the reading you were able to complete.

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic debate programming to middle and high school students in the Twin Cities. Our mission is to empower students to become engaged learners, critical thinkers, and effective advocates for themselves and their communities.

We are looking for community coaches for the 2020-21 season. Community coaches are experienced debaters who want to share their expertise with students and collaborate with teacher coaches at our area schools. Applicants who competed in Policy/Cross-Examination, Classic, Parliamentary, Lincoln Douglas, or Public Forum debate as high schoolers/college students would be highly preferred.

We pay our coaches $2,250 for the September-December season and we pay judges $55 a day to judge.

Sign up to be a vendor during this year’s Taste of Augsburg Homecoming event. Interact with fellow students, alumni, and friends of the university while fundraising for your student group!

As a vendor, students are encouraged to sell a product (food, pom poms, etc.), or a service (carnival game, face painting, etc.). Groups are responsible for the cost of the product/service, but any profit made will be yours to keep.

Alumni Relations will be awarding up to $1,000 in seed money for student groups & athletic teams to help purchase supplies. Money will be awarded on a rolling basis until all money is spent.

$25-$50 for groups offering games or activities

Building Access Update

As we start of the fall semester, there will be some changes to building access to help facilitate a transition back to campus and in-person instruction. The changes to building access began on 8/25 – please read below to see how building access will be changing.

The following buildings will be open to the public from 7 am – 7 pm and will be accessible by fob from 7 pm – 10 pm:
– Lindell Library (hours will vary based on when the Library is open)
– Sverdrup
– Memorial
– Science
– Old Main
– Christensen Center
– Oren Gateway Center
– Anderson Lower Level

The following buildings will remain on fob access only from 7 am – 10 pm (with the exception of scheduled events):

Lindell Basement Cleanup, Energy Savings and New Meeting Room Projects

Work is continuing on the lower level of the Lindell Library, which flooded on August 26. A plug snapped off from the fire sprinkler line of Lindell’s water system, causing clean water to run into the mechanical room and the rest of the lower level. The entire space was flooded and nearly two feet of water filled an elevator.
Augsburg is working with professional sanitization and environmental firms to assess when the space will be usable. It has already been determined that the two classrooms, 15 and 16, are usable.

All campus light bulbs are being replaced with energy-saving LED lights by the end of the year. Facilities will notify departments about a week ahead of time and share updates via A-mail when work is being done in their area. The cost savings was planned to pay for a needed replacement for the Edor Nelson Athletic Field dome. The dome is 15 years old and the life expectancy is 12. The new dome will be installed in November.

Since there’s a lot of demand for student organizations to meet, Anderson 21 and Sverdrup 208 are being turned into meeting spaces. Anderson 21, in the residence hall’s basement, was used by McGough Construction as an office during the Hagfors Center construction. Sverdrup 208, had been the former Honors Lounge. Both areas are being updated with paint, new carpet, and technology to become meeting rooms. Once the projects are complete, it will be communicated via A-mail and reservations can be made.

J flight is a national artist from right here in Saint Paul and he will be performing at the infamous First Ave & 7th St Entry on Tuesday, September 21st! Come show support and maybe find a new favorite artist or two while you are at it! 

Special guests include: Soda Supreme, Xten with Rich Goone and Alexkai, Yare and Knucky. Hosted by Tadow. 

This is an 18+ event. ID required. Doors open at 7, Show starts at 8. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. 

You must have your vaccine card or proof of a negative covid test within 72 hours prior to the show.
