Community Aid Network (CANMN) is a volunteer-led mutual aid site located in Minneapolis, MN. We work to build mutual aid bonds with our neighbors, organize volunteers and redistribute resources to ensure everyone has the means for dignified survival.
CANMN is looking for a Somali interpreter to provide assistance during community distribution days. Main duties would include taking food and supply orders and answering questions related to distribution. There is also a potential future need for written translation.
This is a part-time PAID position. Hours are flexible. Distribution days are Mondays and Wednesdays, 12 – 4pm, and are divided into two shifts each day (11:30am – 2pm and 2 – 4:30pm). Physical demands for this position include standing for sustained periods of time and some moderate lifting (i.e. helping to load food orders into vehicles).
CANMN operates out of the Children’s Theatre Company/Minneapolis Institute of Art at 2400 3rd Ave. in Minneapolis.
We follow all COVID-19 safety regulations, as defined by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

All faculty members and teaching staff are invited to gather and share their experiences with teaching, learning, and advising in this strange new world. – we’ll trade ideas, advice, highs, lows, successes, and failures – or maybe we’ll just plain old vent. Most importantly, we will attempt to inoculate ourselves against one of the more insidious side effects of this pandemic – isolation. Apply now to take the fall semester Model United Nations course, POL 368. Members of this class will participate in the American ModelUnited Nations from November 20-23, 2021, held in Chicago, IL.
In this course, you will gain in-depth understanding of the United Nations and international diplomacy through the process of preparation for attending the conference in November. Students research a country and set of issues for the committee on which they will serve.
The fall 2021 Augsburg delegation will be representing the countries of Guatemala, Namibia and Sweden. In addition, a focus of the class will also be the study of indigenous peoples and their connection to theUnited Nations, with emphasis on Canadian First Nations.
The conference provides experiential learning that enables you to develop a better understanding of the inner workings of the UN, and a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. This opportunity is a great chance to put your learning into practice!
We will accept applications until September 1, 2021 or until the program fills.
Prerequisite: students must complete thePOL 160 course before Fall 2021, or have relevant equivalent academic experience.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is happy to announce we have hired two new admission counselors (one first year and one transfer) to join our team! We ask the campus community to help welcome Ramona Tran as our newest Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions (she joins the first year team along with Josh Owens, Nicole Borwege, and Shonna Fulford).
Ramona comes to us from The College of St. Scholastica where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Behavior (’19) and her MBA in Leadership & Change (’21), and served as the Area Coordinator for Residence Life. Her experience in higher education, her energy, and her passion for working with first generation students will make her an asset to our team and to the larger Augsburg community! Ramona’s first day will be Monday, May 17th.
We also welcome Tim Lawson, the newest Assistant Director of Transfer Admissions (joining Katie Asfeld and Paul Kienberger). Tim is a proud two time Augsburg grad, first with his Bachelor’s in 2009 and then with his MBA in 2015. He lives in Minnetonka with his wife, two daughters, and Bernese Mountain dog. Tim says, “I wanted to take this opportunity to express how excited I am to be joining the team and the Augsburg community. I am looking forward to meeting you and learning from you all.” Tim’s first day will be Tuesday, June 1.

With the trend toward a more diverse workforce continuing, so are the ways we conduct business. In the past, most U.S. businesses functioned primarily within our borders. Today, globalization is proving to be a huge game changer for many companies, big and small. With globalization and increased immigration, the potential for misunderstandings in the workplace is really high. First, language differences may lead to miscommunication and misinterpretation. Second you fail to take into account significant cultural differences. For example, during a performance review, you provide constructive criticism to an employee with the intent of helping him improve his performance. Later on you learn that he quit his job because of the shame and loss of face your feedback caused. In this interactive Webinar, you will understand the impact of cultural differences in the workplace and learn strategies to bridge those differences effectively.

The applicant pool is highly competitive, but the hard work and determination of these students paved the way for their amazing accomplishment.

Since 2008, seventy-two Augsburg students have received Gilman scholarships, totaling $284,000. In addition, over the last 10 semesters, Augsburg’s Gilman win rate has averaged over 60% – of 38 completed applications in that time, we have had 23 winners!
It takes a village to support students in their application process. Many thanks to Casey Jarvala, Catherine Maun and the whole financial aid team, staff in TRIO, MSS, Academic Advising, and URGO and, of course, faculty mentors/advisors.

The LEAD (Leaders for Equity, Action & Democracy) Fellows Program focuses on student leadership development through off-campus, community-strengthening work in which they are working to address social issues such as education inequity, food insecurity, housing instability, etc. Students attend regular cohort meetings to reflect together on their work, cultivate critical analysis of the issues they’re working to address, and develop leadership skills.
In addition to being an active member of the leadership cohort, students will have access to paid internships both on and off campus in position that focus on social change work.

About the MNUDL
The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University, located in the heart of Minneapolis, Minnesota. We provide academic competitive debate programming to Twin Cities-area middle and high school students. Our mission is to empower debaters to become engaged learners, critical thinkers, and active global citizens who are effective advocates for themselves and their communities.
The Community Debate Liaison Role
Our VISTA role, beginning in August 2021, is designed to build capacity for our fast-growing Spanish Debate League and East African Debate programs. In these programs, education leaders in the Latine and East African communities took the historic debate model and adapted it to suit their community’s needs. The VISTA member will serve as a community liaison, promoting our programs more broadly throughout the Twin Cities area and establishing new relationships within universities, corporate affinity groups, area nonprofits, and more.
Note: Spanish or Somali speaking skills preferred, but not required.
Benefits
AmeriCorps VISTAs receive training, a choice of an education award or end of service stipend, an education award upon successful completion of service, health coverage, relocation allowance, childcare assistance if eligible, living allowance, and a stipend. The Community Debate Liaison will be a member of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits VISTA cohort.

Called to Place: Community Responsive Education
A virtual conference hosted by Augsburg University
July 12 – 15, 2021
The 2021 Vocation of Lutheran Higher Education Conference (formerly, the Vocation of a Lutheran College Conference) for the Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities will convene daily, July 12 – 15, 2021, 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm Eastern Time, except the session on July 13th, which will meet 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm Eastern Time.
The theme of the 2021 conference is “Called to Place: Community Responsive Education.” Participants will consider how local landscapes, neighborhoods, events, and people influence the missions, identities, and institutional vocations of our colleges and universities, along with our individual callings related to antiracism in our particular communities.

Registration requires two steps. The first step is registering to receive the two Zoom links that will give you access to the conference. These links are included in the registration form. People’s Center Clinic at 425 20th Avenue South (across Riverside Avenue from Augsburg’s Minneapolis campus) is offering a free, walk-in COVID-19 vaccination clinic Thursday afternoon, May 20, from 1 – 3 p.m.
No appointment is necessary, but participants need to be at least 18 years old.
The vaccine that will be provided at this clinic is the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which requires only one dose. A person is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
People interested in getting a vaccine on Thursday should arrive at the People’s Center Clinic between 1 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. The time required to get the vaccine and complete the post-vaccination waiting period is about 20 to 30 minutes. If you have health insurance, please bring that information with you. If you do not have insurance, you can still get the vaccine; insurance is not required.

The Campus Kitchen Food Lab (HAGFORS 108) will be open this summer (May-August). The limit of individuals available in the Food Lab is 10 people at times (including Campus Kitchen student workers). The hours for Open Cooking Hours are always from 6-8pm biweekly on Wednesdays.

Ramona comes to us from The College of St. Scholastica where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Behavior (’19) and her MBA in Leadership & Change (’21), and served as the Area Coordinator for Residence Life. Her experience in higher education, her energy, and her passion for working with first generation students will make her an asset to our team and to the larger Augsburg community! Ramona’s first day will be Monday, May 17th.
We also welcome Tim Lawson, the newest Assistant Director of Transfer Admissions (joining Katie Asfeld and Paul Kienberger). Tim is a proud two time Augsburg grad, first with his Bachelor’s in 2009 and then with his MBA in 2015. He lives in Minnetonka with his wife, two daughters, and Bernese Mountain dog. Tim says, “I wanted to take this opportunity to express how excited I am to be joining the team and the Augsburg community. With the trend toward a more diverse workforce continuing, so are the ways we conduct business. In the past, most U.S. businesses functioned primarily within our borders. Today, globalization is proving to be a huge game changer for many companies, big and small. With globalization and increased immigration, the potential for misunderstandings in the workplace is really high. First, language differences may lead to miscommunication and misinterpretation. Second you fail to take into account significant cultural differences. For example, during a performance review, you provide constructive criticism to an employee with the intent of helping him improve his performance. Later on you learn that he quit his job because of the shame and loss of face your feedback caused. In this interactive Webinar, you will understand the impact of cultural differences in the workplace and learn strategies to bridge those differences effectively.

The LEAD (Leaders for Equity, Action & Democracy) Fellows Program focuses on student leadership development through off-campus, community-strengthening work in which they are working to address social issues such as education inequity, food insecurity, housing instability, etc. Students attend regular cohort meetings to reflect together on their work, cultivate critical analysis of the issues they’re working to address, and develop leadership skills.

This month Nick Huseby joined the integrated Augsburg University/Luther Seminary marketing team. In his role as web manager and front-end developer, Nick leads web development, design, and content for Augsburg’s WordPress-based sites. Nick will work with content managers to ensure websites are accurate, follow accessibility and usability best practices, and adhere to brand standards. Nick holds a bachelor’s degree from Concordia College and a master’s degree from Luther Seminary. He was most recently employed at a startup based in the Washington, D.C. area. This workshop will provide an overview of the first year activities of the NSF PRISM project, share goals for the 21-22 academic year and hold two breakout sessions. Spending time online can be anxiety provoking for students, but it can also be a potent source of help and guidance. There are many good online resources to help with anxiety, depression, and other signs of mental health problems. Online communities for people coping with mental health conditions also exist. This workshop will introduce participants to some useful online resources for students dealing with mental health conditions and the people who support them.

uAchieve: Degree Audit Q & A Facilitated by Christine Berkenpas and Hope Blatchley
This session is a follow-up Q & A to the uAchieve degree audit training video series posted on the Community Moodle website. We want to ensure that department chairs (and others) have received answers to all of their questions about the degree audit and the vetting process. The June 15, 2021, deadline for providing feedback to the encoders is quickly approaching. The next deadline of July 15, 2021, will also come quickly–the department chairs signing off on their department’s degree audits.
This Q & A session will primarily benefit people who have already watched the 15 self-paced training videos. If you have not already watched this series, totaling 2 ½ hours, we encourage you to schedule two or three blocks of time for yourself to watch the videos prior to the Q & A session. Perhaps you can use some of the open time periods during the 3 Days in May. We are so excited for you to now have access to this long-awaited tool!

The LEAD (Leaders for Equity, Action & Democracy) Fellows Program focuses on student leadership development through off-campus, community-strengthening work in which they are working to address social issues such as education inequity, food insecurity, housing instability, etc. Students attend regular cohort meetings to reflect together on their work, cultivate critical analysis of the issues they’re working to address, and develop leadership skills.
In addition to being an active member of the leadership cohort, students will have access to paid internships both on and off campus in position that focus on social change work.

The AugSTEM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Funded by the National Science Foundation, AugSTEM Scholars receive scholarships of up to $10,000 per student per year. Scholars also become a part of the STEM community at Augsburg with opportunities for summer research, faculty mentoring, and career development.
Eligibility:
– Enrolled at least half-time in a STEM major (biology, biopsychology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics)
– Within 5 semesters of graduating with a STEM degree as of Fall 2021 (graduating by December ‘23)
– Major GPA of 2.75 or higher (scholars will be expected to raise their GPA to 3.0 during program participation)
– U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
– Demonstrated financial need as determined by financial aid status (Pell or MN State grant eligible or equivalent)
Application deadline: Wednesday, May 19 at 11:59pm
Faculty reference deadline: Friday, May 28 (applicants should get permission from one faculty member to serve as their reference and name them in their application)
Students who began their college careers at community colleges are encouraged to apply as well as students who began at Augsburg.

Shamsa Ahmed, 2021, graduated with Political Science and International Relations majors won a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) grant to teach English in South Korea. She is a TRIO/SSS student, Act Six Scholar and Dell Scholar recipient. She also won the national Boren scholarship where she spent 8 weeks in Florida studying Swahili followed by 4 months in Tanzania learning Swahili and studying Swahili culture and history. Following her ETA she plans to earn a master’s degree in public policy. She is passionate about refugee rights as she herself spent many years in a refugee camp in Kenya until coming to the U.S. as a 6th grader. She’s passionate about peace building and can envision a career in the foreign service or the United Nations. Shamsa is familiar with 5 languages and for the past 5 years has taught young children Saturdays and Sundays at her mosque.

Citlaly Escobar, 2021, graduated with majors in Political Science and Sociology won a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) to Taiwan. Citlaly has been involved on and off campus in a variety of ways. She was a first-team all-conference lacrosse player, vice president of the Augsburg Latinx Student Association, and a freshmen and sophomore class president for the Honors Program. She was also one of the working group members for the Department of Critical Race and Ethnicity Studies, serving as a Latinx student representative. In addition, she has spent the last two years as a student researcher for TRIO/McNair, URGO, and received a graduate research assistantship at the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (first undergraduate to receive this award). She also won the prestigious Public Policy and International Affairs Award to study for 7 weeks last summer at the Hubert Humphrey School. Following her time in Taiwan, Citlaly plans to pursue a PhD in American Studies where she hopes to continue her research about the Twin Cities Chicano Movement and Latino society in the upper Midwest.

Ciashia Shiongyaj, 2021, graduated with a major in Biology and minor in Environmental Studies won a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Taiwan. Ciashia is motivated to become an ETA because she wants to create a community inside the classroom and join communities outside the classroom. She also wants to learn more about her Asian heritage. She played on Augsburg’s volleyball team and has taught volleyball for several years to many age groups. While at Augsburg she conducted URGO research with Dr. Emily Schilling and also did a summer of research with the DNR in Bemidji. Upon returning to the U.S. she plans to earn a PhD in Ecology and Evolution. She’s passionate about finding ways that humans can coexist in this ecosystem without depleting the Earth’s biodiversity.

Taiwana Shambley, 2021, graduated with majors in English and African American Studies and was named an Alternate Fulbright English Teaching Assistant to Laos. Last summer she taught 7th-grade literature at Breakhthrough Twin Cities to many Hmong, Laotian, and Taiwanese students. Wanting to know more about these cultures is one of the reasons Taiwana chose Laos as her country. She is a TRIO/McNair Scholar, Batalden Scholar in Applied Ethics and Executive Editor of the Echo. She also served as a Writing Lab Tutor. Her future plans include earning graduate degrees in Creative Writing and American Studies.

TOMORROW at 9 am: The NSF PRISM Project: Supporting Faculty-Student Interaction through Navigational Mentorship

This workshop will provide an overview of the first year activities of the NSF PRISM project, share goals for the 21-22 academic year and hold two breakout sessions. The first breakout will be guided by student feedback on the PRISM mentorship pilot this spring. We’ll discuss strategies for enhancing student interaction with faculty and supporting student professional and career goals. The second breakout will explore what professional development the PRISM project might provide during the second year of this five-year project.

Spending time online can be anxiety provoking for students, but it can also be a potent source of help and guidance. There are many good online resources to help with anxiety, depression, and other signs of mental health problems. Online communities for people coping with mental health conditions also exist. This workshop will introduce participants to some useful online resources for students dealing with mental health conditions and the people who support them.

2021 Leadership Summit May 19
The Leadership Summit is back! Join us for the 2021 Augsburg/Midway Chamber of Commerce Leadership Summit – live/zoom format.
The noon keynote speaker for this year’s summit will be President Paul Pribbenow “New Protocols: Life and Work Together after a Pandemic” His presentation will be preceded by an 11am session led by MAL alum Carole Burton on “Equity, Blind Spots, and Perfectionism: The Why’s, How’s, and impact on ROTI”
Augsburg faculty, staff, and graduate students will be able to attend this year’s summit free, but pre-registration is required. If interested, please contact Alan Tuchtenhagen at tuchten@augsburg.edu by Friday May 14. You may attend one or both sessions.

The AAC met for the final time this academic year on Wednesday, May 5. The following proposals were approved at that meeting:
Academic Policy: Topics courses may be offered three (3) times before they need to be approved as a permanent course. The course may not be offered a fourth time without AAC permanent approval.
HPE 203 will become cross-listed with BIO 103.
SPA 11X is a new course.
PWC 310 changed its course title.
PWC 330 is a new course.
RLN 300 will provide the signature Search for Meaning requirement for advanced transfer students.

Augsburg CGEE has extended the deadline to June 15th for our Fall Semester programs in Mexico, Namibia and Central America, and to June 30th for the USA Program on the Mississippi River. You can use your financial aid, plus a $1500 Travel grant for the international programs.

Citlaly Escobar, 2021, graduated with majors in Political Science and Sociology won a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) to Taiwan. Citlaly has been involved on and off campus in a variety of ways. She was a first-team all-conference lacrosse player, vice president of the Augsburg Latinx Student Association, and a freshmen and sophomore class president for the Honors Program. She was also one of the working group members for the Department of Critical Race and Ethnicity Studies, serving as a Latinx student representative. In addition, she has spent the last two years as a student researcher for TRIO/McNair, URGO, and received a graduate research assistantship at the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (first undergraduate to receive this award). She also won the prestigious Public Policy and International Affairs Award to study for 7 weeks last summer at the Hubert Humphrey School. Following her time in Taiwan, Citlaly plans to pursue a PhD in American Studies where she hopes to continue her research about the Twin Cities Chicano Movement and Latino society in the upper Midwest.
