Free On-Campus COVID-19 Testing; Students and Volunteers Get a Chance to Win AirPods

There are three opportunities soon to get tested for COVID-19 free of charge. Students who attend, present their student ID, and get tested will be entered in an AirPods and gift card giveaway. Faculty and staff are invited as well. Those who sign up and volunteer to help at the events will be entered into an additional drawing for AirPods.

The state of Minnesota is sponsoring pre- and post spring break testing at Augsburg University. This is a free saliva test. Results take a few days to arrive. To ensure an accurate test, do not eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum 30 minutes prior to testing. No insurance is needed but, if you have it, bring your insurance card. This testing event is open to those with symptoms or no symptoms. Off-campus students also are eligible for the AirPods and gift cards giveaway. No appointment is necessary.

Schield: “Statistical Literacy for Policy Makers”

Milo Schield, Department of Business Administration, has been asked to give an invited lecture at the 63rd World Statistics Congress: July 16-20, 2021. His topic: “Statistical Literacy for Policy Makers”. The title of the session is “Statistical and Data Literacy in Policy Making”. His session is sponsored by the International Statistical Literacy Project (ISLP) and the International Association of Statistics Educators (IASE). The congress is organized by the International Statistical Institute (ISI). Milo is an elected member of the ISI, the ISLP representative for the United States, the President of the National Numeracy Network, and a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. His 70+ statistical publications have earned more than 740 citations according to Google Scholar.

As the Site Director of Augsburg’s CGEE-Mexico I want to thank the entire Augsburg community for sharing your condolences with the family of Augsburg-Mexico employees Moises Rios (50) & Isabel Sánchez (48), a married couple who died of COVID-19 last month. I especially want to thank all of you who made incredibly generous donations to the family through the GoFundMe campaign to support the Rios-Sanchez family, including 11-year-old Sliri (pronounced “Es-leer-y”): https://www.gofundme.com/f/supportriosanchezfamily

This fundraising campaign was organized by Mary Laurel True, who participated in Augsburg’s first semester program in Mexico in 1979, and four other former CGEE-Mexico students who studied here, as well as myself. Our goal is to raise US $20,000 to support the family. 25% of the funds raised will be dedicated to Sliri’s education since there is no longer public high school in Mexico. We want to make sure that Sliri is able to go to high school and college, which was her parents’ dream – that she be the first in the family to graduate and attend college. “Maybe Augsburg,” Isabel used to say with a shy smile. Apply for the MINNE Fellowship

Fellowship in the MINNE program this year offers a unique opportunity to engage fully in the course of study offered by the JCRC Holocaust education zoom webinars. We are offering a $200 stipend which will be awarded upon successful completion of all program requirements.

Because of the limited number of spaces available, we wish to ensure that those who are accepted into the program are able to make the most of the experience. The primary criteria for admission to the program are demonstration of interest in the offerings of the program and commitment to furthering your education about the Holocaust.

Anti-Apartheid and Black Lives Matter: Global Movements for Racial Justice

A new program is being offered this summer by the Pan-Afrikan Center and the Center for Global Education and Experience (CGEE) called Anti-Apartheid and Black Lives Matter: Global Movements for Racial Justice.

The program will be offered May 17 – May 28. Students will be able to receive 2 credits and fulfill the Augsburg Experience requirement OR they can take it only to fulfill the Augsburg Experience. The cost of the program is being supported by scholarships from CGEE, the Pan-Afrikan Center, and Augsburg University; therefore, we are able to offer it at a reduced price.

Program participants will critically analyze the global racial unrest movements of the Southern Africa Anti-Apartheid system, and the racially motivated murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Albertina Shifotoka, Program Director of CGEE Namibia, and Azania Tripp, Director of the Pan-Afrikan Center, will facilitate a 2-week program experience that will introduce students to the understanding of how these movements became historical events and impacted policy and the visibilities on racial inequities that impact the Pan-Afrikan diaspora and all BIPOC communities. The program will be offered from May 17 – May 28, 2021 and the deadline for applying is Thurs, March 25.

When anyone is confronted by any form of aggression, whether verbal, physical, social, or economic, it is natural to feel fear, doubt, and paralysis. This is important in assessing critical next steps if we happen to be a bystander. We must also look at our own fears and triggers as they, too, play a role in how we may react or respond to any potential conflict or confrontation.

During this webinar participants will consider some very important questions as they devise their own ways of responding to triggering situations. How does privilege impact decisions to engage in conflict and whether/how to respond? When is allyship an act of support, and when is it not? Who gets to decide? How do we deal with our own emotional responses to aggression and confrontation? How can one become an effective ally in a virtual work world and how does this differ from an in-person workplace?

Learning Outcomes
Know how to decide when to intervene as an active bystander
Identify and manage their personal emotional triggers
Utilize practical tools to engage in building allyship for safety in their workplace

Apply to be the Resource & Curriculum Intern for Minnesota Urban Debate League (MNUDL) (A program of Augsburg University)

As a member of the MN Urban Debate League team, the Resource & Curriculum Intern will support in the creation of debate materials. The materials created will encourage students’ understanding of and passion for debate, allowing them to identify how to use their voices to promote change, and setting them up to be leaders in their schools and communities.
The Resource & Curriculum Intern will contribute to the research, design, and editing of debate materials, including debate curriculum and educational videos.

The Resource & Curriculum Intern will work virtually, 10-15 hours per week through the end of May.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

o Assist in the design and editing of:
● Physical and virtual debate curriculum
● Educational debate videos
o Research debate topics to present as potential options for the upcoming season.
o Conduct online surveys with debate students.
o Attend weekly check-in meetings with supervisor.
o Attend team meetings as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

● Current Augsburg student with a desire to contribute to a community that concentrates on the lifting up of youth voices.
● Strong communicator (written and verbal).
● Attentive to detail.
● Experience working with youth OR an interest in the field of education.
● Experience conducting surveys OR a desire to learn about conducting surveys.
● Ability to manage various projects and follow through with each.
● Resourceful and keen on creative challenges.
● Ability to work 10-15 hours per week.
● Desired but not required: fluency in written and spoken Spanish.

Two Faculty Members Emeriti Exemplify Augsburg’s Commitment to the City

Retired art professor Norm Holen’s and retired social work professor Nancy Rodenborg’s powerful letters to the editor appeared in the StarTribune on successive days this week, each exemplifying Augsburg’s commitment to advocating for safe, integrated life for all neighbors. Norm’s letter on p. A6 of the March 16th edition remarked on the justice served by Minneapolis’s settlement with the family of George Floyd: “Every person’s life is special and should not be cut short by anyone.” Nancy’s letter on p. A8 of the March 17th edition featured the headline: “This neighborhood is in pain.” From her perspective and expertise as a social worker, the letter highlighted the toll on our mental health when gunfire and bullying are unchecked.

MDAW is a collaborative effort between The Minnesota Urban Debate League (a program of Augsburg University) and The University of Minnesota Debate Team. Our goal is to increase access to speech & debate for schools, coaches, and students entering 5th – 12th grade providing a high quality, virtual summer camp experience to students in the Twin Cities Metro, the Upper Midwest region, and across the US!

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2021 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2022 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2022. We are particularly looking for students in STEM fields that are interested in pursuing doctoral degrees, but we will consider all majors EXCEPT most professional fields (including business, pre-law, pre-health).

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000+) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2022.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred).

The Office of Academic Affairs and the Faculty Development Committee invite your nominations for the annual Augsburg University Distinguished Contributions Awards. Augsburg annually recognizes individuals or groups that have made exemplary contributions to creating an engaging academic learning environment through awards for teaching, scholarship, and service. All faculty or full-time staff who have been employed at the university for at least three years are eligible for the awards.

Distinguished Contribution in Teaching – Outstanding teaching encompasses many forms and pedagogies, and is not restricted to the classroom. As such, nominations made in this category should demonstrate the nominee’s active engagement with students, creative approaches to instruction, ability to challenge students, and overall passion for teaching. Up to two awards may be given in this category, one for full-time faculty and one for adjunct faculty (2 courses per term or less).

Resource & Curriculum Intern for Minnesota Urban Debate League (MNUDL) (A program of Augsburg University)

As a member of the MN Urban Debate League team, the Resource & Curriculum Intern will support in the creation of debate materials. The materials created will encourage students’ understanding of and passion for debate, allowing them to identify how to use their voices to promote change, and setting them up to be leaders in their schools and communities.
The Resource & Curriculum Intern will contribute to the research, design, and editing of debate materials, including debate curriculum and educational videos.

The Resource & Curriculum Intern will work virtually, 10-15 hours per week through the end of May.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

o Assist in the design and editing of:
● Physical and virtual debate curriculum
● Educational debate videos
o Research debate topics to present as potential options for the upcoming season.
o Conduct online surveys with debate students.
o Attend weekly check-in meetings with supervisor.
o Attend team meetings as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

● Current Augsburg student with a desire to contribute to a community that concentrates on the lifting up of youth voices.
● Strong communicator (written and verbal).
● Attentive to detail.
● Experience working with youth OR an interest in the field of education.
● Experience conducting surveys OR a desire to learn about conducting surveys.
● Ability to manage various projects and follow through with each.
● Resourceful and keen on creative challenges.
● Ability to work 10-15 hours per week.
● Desired but not required: fluency in written and spoken Spanish.

Anti-Apartheid and Black Lives Matter: Global Movements for Racial Justice

A new program is being offered this summer by the Pan-Afrikan Center and the Center for Global Education and Experience (CGEE) called Anti-Apartheid and Black Lives Matter: Global Movements for Racial Justice.

The program will be offered May 17 – May 28. Students will be able to receive 2 credits and fulfill the Augsburg Experience requirement OR they can take it only to fulfill the Augsburg Experience. The cost of the program is being supported by scholarships from CGEE, the Pan-Afrikan Center, and Augsburg University; therefore, we are able to offer it at a reduced price.

Program participants will critically analyze the global racial unrest movements of the Southern Africa Anti-Apartheid system, and the racially motivated murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Albertina Shifotoka, Program Director of CGEE Namibia, and Azania Tripp, Director of the Pan-Afrikan Center, will facilitate a 2-week program experience that will introduce students to the understanding of how these movements became historical events and impacted policy and the visibilities on racial inequities that impact the Pan-Afrikan diaspora and all BIPOC communities. The program will be offered from May 17 – May 28, 2021 and the deadline for applying is Thurs, March 25.

Support for Augsburg Family After Parents’ Deaths (COVID)

As the Site Director of Augsburg’s CGEE-Mexico I want to thank the entire Augsburg community for sharing your condolences with the family of Augsburg-Mexico employees Moises Rios (50) & Isabel Sánchez (48), a married couple who died of COVID-19 about three weeks ago. Since many of you have asked how you could support this family, including 11-year-old Sliri (pronounced “Es-leer-y”), I want to announce the launching of a GoFundMe campaign: https://www.gofundme.com/f/supportriosanchezfamily

This fundraising campaign was organized by Mary Laurel True, who participated in Augsburg’s first semester program in Mexico in 1979, and four other former CGEE-Mexico students who studied here, as well as myself. Our initial goal is to raise US $15,000 to support the family. 25% of the funds raised will be dedicated to Sliri’s education since there is no longer public high school here in Mexico. Therefore, we want to make sure that she is able to go to high school and college, which was her parents’ dream – that she be the first in the family to graduate and attend college. “Maybe Augsburg,” Isabel used to say with a shy smile. This survey will be asking for information on a variety of college student health topics. We hope you will take the time to complete the survey and do so by March 26th. New Program | Anti-Apartheid and Black Lives Matter: Global Movements for Racial Justice

A new program is being offered this summer by the Pan-Afrikan Center and the Center for Global Education and Experience (CGEE) called Anti-Apartheid and Black Lives Matter: Global Movements for Racial Justice.

The program will be offered May 17 – May 28. Students will be able to receive 2 credits and fulfill the Augsburg Experience requirement OR they can take it only to fulfill the Augsburg Experience. The cost of the program is being supported by scholarships from CGEE, the Pan-Afrikan Center, and Augsburg University; therefore, we are able to offer it at a reduced price.

Program participants will critically analyze the global racial unrest movements of the Southern Africa Anti-Apartheid system, and the racially motivated murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Albertina Shifotoka, Program Director of CGEE Namibia, and Azania Tripp, Director of the Pan-Afrikan Center, will facilitate a 2-week program experience that will introduce students to the understanding of how these movements became historical events and impacted policy and the visibilities on racial inequities that impact the Pan-Afrikan diaspora and all BIPOC communities. The program will be offered from May 17 – May 28, 2021 and the deadline for applying is Thurs, March 25.

Augsburg annually recognizes individuals or groups that have made exemplary contributions to creating an engaging academic learning environment through awards for teaching, scholarship, and service. All faculty or full-time staff who have been employed at the university for at least three years are eligible for the awards.

Distinguished Contribution in Teaching – Outstanding teaching encompasses many forms and pedagogies, and is not restricted to the classroom. As such, nominations made in this category should demonstrate the nominee’s active engagement with students, creative approaches to instruction, ability to challenge students, and overall passion for teaching. Up to two awards may be given in this category, one for full-time faculty and one for adjunct faculty (2 courses per term or less).

Augsburg’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting students for Fall 2021 admission. Eligible applicants will be at Junior status by the end of Spring 2022 and available to conduct full-time research Summer 2022. We are particularly looking for students in STEM fields that are interested in pursuing doctoral degrees, but we will consider all majors EXCEPT most professional fields (including business, pre-law, pre-health).

The TRIO McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000+) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2022.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income AND/OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents and maintain at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA (3.0+ preferred).

A Few Days Left, a Few Spots Left for Upcoming Mississippi Expedition

Challenge yourself, take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and gain valuable real-world skills for navigating the complexities of the 21st Century. This coming September, the next group of students, faculty, and staff will embark from Lake Itasca to begin their hundred-day expedition by canoe and van down the length of the Mississippi River. Students take courses in environmental justice, climate change, politics in the American heartland, outdoor leadership, and undertake individual research projects. In addition to spending time in St. Louis, Memphis, and New Orleans, the group paddles and camps in the “Wild Miles” on the Lower Mississippi, the heavily industrialized “Chemical Corridor,” and finishes by paddling to the Gulf of Mexico, 2,345 river miles from the headwaters. Students interested in joining the program are invited to apply through the Augsburg Study Away web portal. Deadline for applying is March 15.

Fellowship in the MINNE program this year offers a unique opportunity to engage fully in the course of study offered by the JCRC Holocaust education zoom webinars. We are offering a $200 stipend which will be awarded upon successful completion of all program requirements.

Because of the limited number of spaces available, we wish to ensure that those who are accepted into the program are able to make the most of the experience. The primary criteria for admission to the program are demonstration of interest in the offerings of the program and commitment to furthering your education about the Holocaust.

Christina L. Erickson, Ph.D., LISW was highlighted in the most recent edition of SWK Advocates magazines by NASW. See the story on Climate Change beginning on page 17 of the magazine. One of the courses Christina Erickson teaches is “Environmental Justice and Social Change,”which she said examines the relationship between environmental justice issues and the principles and methods of social change. It also explores the relationship between environmental damage and damage to human populations, the differential effect of environmental damage on specific populations, and the ways social change agents can mobilize action to correct these injustices, said Erickson, a professor and director of the BSW program at Augsburg University in Minneapolis.

Auggie Basics Housing – Applications Now Open

As part of the Augsburg University Equity Proposal, the Auggie Basics – Housing initiative is designed to address the needs of students who experience housing instability. The purpose of the program is to provide a bridge for students whose housing is not stable as they seek to identify a permanent solution.

Students accepted into the Auggie Basics Program will live on campus without cost to the student. Regardless of when students enter the program, the housing commitment will cover the full academic year if needed. If the student secures permanent housing elsewhere, they will be released from the program and the spot will be offered to another student. Summer housing may be an option. Students must reapply each academic year. Being chosen for the Auggie Basics program one year does not guarantee participation in future years.

Space is still available to join the Spring 2021 Batalden Book Club to read “We Want to do More Than Survive” (by Bettina Love). This Zoom book club is open to Augsburg students, faculty, and staff.

Please contact Bibiana Koh at koh@augsburg.edu to reserve a spot, arrange to pick up your book (in Memorial Hall on campus), and to select a book club date (please include your preferred time in your email).

Here are the two book club times offered (You will only attend one):

• Book group #1: Friday, March 26th: 3-4pm
• Book group #2: Monday March 29th, 4-5pm

Augsburg Student Day Government (ASDG) and the Batalden Applied Ethics program will co-sponsor “Abolition Praxis as a Moral Compass: A “Radical Imaginary” Panel Discussion
on Wednesday, April 7th, from 4-6pm. This co-sponsored panel event will feature David Stovall (Professor of Criminology, Law and Justice at the University of Illinois, Chicago) in addition to students and/or community members.

2021 Leadership Award Nominations Due TOMORROW

Hello student organization leaders, members, and advisors,

Nominations for the 2020-2021 Augsburg Leadership Awards are DUE TOMORROW!

These awards honor student leaders and student organizations at Augsburg for their outstanding accomplishments from the past academic year. A list of the awards and their descriptions can be found here.

The nomination form can be found on Auggie Life (see: 2020-2021 Augsburg Leadership Awards Nomination Form), and is open through 5pm on Thursday, March 11.

Winners will be announced at the 22nd Annual Augsburg Leadership Awards on Sunday, April 18 from 6-8pm (virtual).

We highly encourage all of you to nominate fellow students and student organizations. Self-nominations are also welcome!
