Hoonuit (formerly Atomic Learning) Subscription Ending August 31

We will not be renewing our subscription to hoonuit (formerly Atomic Learning) which provides online short tutorial videos on many topics including software like Microsoft products. Over the past 2 years usage has declined greatly and Augsburg is not getting enough value from the subscription. Based on current analytics this impact is minimal due to low usage. There’s an abundance of free tutorial videos online now easily found through searching.

Windows / Office License Expring? Activating Windows

Augsburg-owned PCs normally update Windows and Office license information when connected to the on-campus network. In the remote work environment many users are being prompted to activate Windows. Your LFC can help you activate Windows thru a remote assist session.

Please schedule a 15 minute assistance session on your LFC’s calendar to re-Activate Windows. You’ll need to be present to enter your login credentials. Your LFC can also tell you about accessing campus resources remotely over the VPN at this time.

After today’s Tech Tune-ups and Tips, we will offer a third round of the “Advanced Zooming Lab”.

Come practice your Zoom hosting skills. The E-Learning team will be on hand to practice Advanced Zoom hosting skills (e.g., breakout rooms, polling, reactions and participant responses, multiple devices & log-ons, annotation, and screen-sharing) in small groups in breakout rooms. This will be an excellent opportunity to gain experience with these tools in a low-stakes, collegial environment.

This lab add-on to Tech Tune-ups and Tips will take place from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm tomorrow. Checkout the workshop “What’s New in Moodle 2020” from 10 am – 11 am, take a 30 minute break, and then test out your skills during the lab.

Augsburg-Branded Signage and Graphics for COVID-19 Messaging

In partnership with several groups across the university, the Augsburg marketing department is developing a unified set of signage templates and physical distancing markers to provide coronavirus-related health and safety messaging for university properties and settings.

>>> Initial templates are available that allow community members to download signage documents, update the files on their personal computers using word processing software, and print signage using the copy center or an office copier/printer. The marketing department will continue making new templates available as additional needs arise. Current templates include:
– 8 ½ x 11 inch signs
– 11 x 17 inch color signs
– Room and elevator capacity signs
– Table tents
– Cleaning best practices
– And more

>>> In addition, the marketing department placed a centralized order of adhesive physical distancing markers — including floor dots and floor lines — to aid in the proper spacing of individuals as they wait for service.

Important Payroll Change – Monday Timesheet Deadline

The supervisor deadline for timesheet approvals has permanently move to 12:00 PM on Monday during payroll weeks.

Supervisors should work with their respective departments to ensure that staff and student employees submit their timesheets in time for supervisors to meet the new deadline. Supervisors will be approving all timesheets no later than Monday 8/24 at noon.

URGO Academic-Year Research Application Available

Each year URGO offers $1,325 research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project.

Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals in the fall. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly and will begin reviewing proposals September 14th.

URGO On-Campus Research

URGO Federal Work-Study Research Pilot Program

This is a pilot program supporting undergraduate research students through federal work-study funds. We are limiting the number of student researchers supported during the 20-21 academic year to 12 students and funding will be determined by a first-come, first-serve basis. Faculty from any discipline who need assistance with their research from a student are invited to participate in the pilot. An individual faculty member may propose only one student position who will work 5-20 hours per week and no more than their federal work-study allotment. During the 20-21 academic year, the research projects must follow Augsburg’s guidelines regarding Covid-19.

Please note that the student eligibility for federal work-study and the total number of hours must be confirmed by Human Resources after you complete this form. Open until all 12 positions are filled.

If the student will work 100 hours or less total, we recommend applying instead for the URGO Academic Year research grant.

COURSE PURPOSE: Black Minds Matter is a public series that is designed to raise the national consciousness about issues facing Black students in education. The series intentionally addresses the pervasive undervaluing and criminalization of Black minds. Tangible solutions for promoting the learning, development, and success of Black students are offered.

-Identify how assumptions of criminality about Black students are manifested in school, college, and university settings.
-Recognize how socially constructed viewpoints of Black intelligence decenter them as learners in educational institutions.
-Embrace asset-based views of Black students rooted in the concepts of equity-mindedness and institutional responsibility.
-Articulate research-based policies and practices that serve to promote the learning, development, and success of Black students throughout the educational pipeline.

Announcing the New Augsburg/Twins Cities Global Harmony Choir

Do you love to sing *a cappella* harmony? Do you love to learn about other cultures via musical encounter? Then the Augsburg/Twin Cities Global Harmony Choir is for you! This year, through a combination of synchronous Zoom instruction and archived digital teaching materials, we will safely prepare a full program of study and performance in community singing traditions from Corsica, Cuba, Iran, Nigeria, the Republic of Georgia, South Africa, Ukraine, and the United States. The magic of the virtual space will enable us to learn directly from culture bearers on both sides of the Atlantic. Augsburg students can join the ATCGHC at no cost through registration in MUS 392. Anyone else in the Metro area may register for a modest fee. Our cumulative study throughout the regular academic year will culminate in concert presentations in April, whether digitally assembled or – medical science permitting – performed in real space-time. This year’s Augsburg/Twin Cities Global Harmony Choir will establish the choir as an ongoing musical community, available to all year after year. Though we begin in the virtual space, we are poised to open up and meet face-to-face as soon as singers can safely gather again. Therefore, our invitation to members from the Metro community extends to anyone who considers that our home-base at Augsburg is a driveable commute for joining rehearsals or performances. Watch our video for detailed information, and share it with anyone you know who might want to use it.

Face Mask and Hand Sanitizer to be Provided Soon

All students, faculty, and staff in Minneapolis and Rochester soon will receive one face mask. Those in Minneapolis also will receive one personal hand sanitizer in time for the beginning of the fall semester. Hand sanitizer refill stations will be located at Minneapolis campus building entrances. Classes start September 2. Effective July 25, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz mandated face coverings be worn in all public indoor spaces and indoor businesses, as well as outdoors when physical distancing is not possible to maintain. All students, staff, faculty, and visitors must wear face coverings in any common areas while on Augsburg property. Outdoors, this means anytime you are within 6’ of other people, you must be wearing a face covering. Indoors, this means the only places you may be without a face covering on campus is alone within your personal office (or students within their residential unit), or in dining spaces while eating or drinking. We recommend having multiple face coverings (3-5 or more cloth coverings is ideal) that you keep in convenient places—your car, office, and in your bag/backpack. Using cloth coverings enables you to wash them regularly so you always have a clean face covering available.

Voices from the Global South – Hybrid and Online Courses this Fall

CGEE’s courses focus on amplifying voices of marginalized people from around the world, many from the Global South. These courses will include interactions with guest speakers from our community partner connections in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, Namibia, and more!

Explore the concept of vocation in the context of poverty and political oppression, examining the ways in which Christian theology has been and continues to be used, both to justify oppression and injustice, as well as to support social justice movements and offer hope for a peaceful and just social order. Critically examine the ways religious faith informs the daily lives and communities of people in Guatemala, especially in their work for a more peaceful and just society. Reflect upon the history of faith and the struggle for peace and justice in Guatemala through the narratives of several spiritually-grounded change agents, and their understanding of vocation.

Each year URGO offers $1,325 research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project.

Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals in the fall. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly and will begin reviewing proposals September 14th.

URGO On-Campus Research

URGO Federal Work-Study Research Pilot Program

This is a pilot program supporting undergraduate research students through federal work-study funds. We are limiting the number of student researchers supported during the 20-21 academic year to 12 students and funding will be determined by a first-come, first-serve basis. Faculty from any discipline who need assistance with their research from a student are invited to participate in the pilot. An individual faculty member may propose only one student position who will work 5-20 hours per week and no more than their federal work-study allotment. During the 20-21 academic year, the research projects must follow Augsburg’s guidelines regarding Covid-19.

Please note that the student eligibility for federal work-study and the total number of hours must be confirmed by Human Resources after you complete this form. Open until all 12 positions are filled.

If the student will work 100 hours or less total, we recommend applying instead for the URGO Academic Year research grant.

Important Payroll Change – Monday Timesheet Deadline

The supervisor deadline for timesheet approvals has permanently move to 12:00 PM on Monday during payroll weeks.

Supervisors should work with their respective departments to ensure that staff and student employees submit their timesheets in time for supervisors to meet the new deadline. Supervisors will be approving all timesheets no later than Monday 8/24 at noon.

MDH Releases Recommendations for Different Levels of COVID-19 Transmission

On Saturday, the Minnesota Department of Health released recommendations for how colleges and universities in the state should respond to different levels of COVID-19 transmission occurring in or around their campuses this fall. The Augsburg Coronavirus Task Force will be summarizing these transmission levels and the responses institutions should consider into a more digestible, table format, but wanted to make the full document available to the campus community.

Come Zoom with the E-learning Team as they offer two 60-minute sessions each week on how to maximize your use of Moodle and learning technologies as you get ready for classes this Fall. Each session will open with 15-minutes of “pertinent tips & best practices” about important Moodle features/resources. The final 45 minutes will provide training on a specific learning experience or tool.

Site managers can copy over their sites to the new instance.IT will manually copy or migrate courses and sites over, ONLY if requested via the form below. The current and new instance of Moodle Community will be available till Fall or until the migration is completed. Announcing the New Augsburg/Twin Cities Global Harmony Choir

Do you love to sing *a cappella* harmony? Do you love to learn about other cultures via musical encounter? Then the Augsburg/Twin Cities Global Harmony Choir is for you!

This year, through a combination of synchronous Zoom instruction and archived digital teaching materials, we will safely prepare a full program of study and performance in community singing traditions from Corsica, Cuba, Iran, Nigeria, the Republic of Georgia, South Africa, Ukraine, and the United States. The magic of the virtual space will enable us to learn directly from culture bearers on both sides of the Atlantic.

Augsburg students can join the ATCGHC at no cost through registration in MUS 392. Anyone else in the Metro area may register for a modest fee. Our cumulative study throughout the regular academic year will culminate in concert presentations in April, whether digitally assembled or – medical science permitting – performed in real space-time.

This year’s Augsburg/Twin Cities Global Harmony Choir will establish the choir as an ongoing musical community, available to all year after year. Though we begin in the virtual space, we are poised to open up and meet face-to-face as soon as singers can safely gather again. Therefore, our invitation to members from the Metro community extends to anyone who considers that our home-base at Augsburg is a driveable commute for joining rehearsals or performances.

Course: HIS 195 – fulfills a Humanities requirement

Program Leader: professor Maheen Zaman

Travel Dates: March 12-19, 2021

We will walk in the footsteps of Malcolm X on our tour of Muslim Harlem as we study the vast diversity of Black Muslim traditions – Nation of Islam, Sunni Black Muslims, West African businesses, and Latinx Muslims of East Harlem. At New York University’s nationally acclaimed Islamic Center, located in the Village, we will observe the Friday prayer in the context of a campus community integrated with its surrounding professional workforce.

Beyond these two sites in Manhattan, we will venture out to Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx to learn from organizers and advocates of immigration rights and civil liberties, investigate the process of social disappearance of working class Muslims in the face of gentrification, conduct oral histories as paired researchers across the five boroughs, sit with disciples of a female Sufi master and experience the ambiance of their spiritual practice, visit the museums of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art to critically compare natural and cultural representation of Islam and Muslims, take a ferry ride to Elis Island, Statue of Liberty, and compare that immigration narrative with the memories of exclusion curated at the Museum of the Chinese in America, and so much more.

The E-Learning team will be on hand to practice Advanced Zoom hosting skills (e.g., breakout rooms, polling, reactions and participant responses, multiple devices & log-ons, annotation, and screen-sharing) in small groups in breakout rooms. This will be an excellent opportunity to gain experience with these tools in a low-stakes, collegial environment.

This lab add-on to Tech Tune-ups and Tips will take place from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm. Checkout the workshop “Zoom Chat Chatter & Advanced Zooming” from 10 am – 11 am, take a 30 minute break, and then test out your skills during the lab.

After Thursday’s workshop, take a half-hour break and come back for the Advanced Zooming Lab to practice your skills.

Come Zoom with the E-learning Team as they offer two 60-minute sessions each week on how to maximize your use of Moodle and learning technologies as you get ready for classes this Fall. Each session will open with 15-minutes of “pertinent tips & best practices” about important Moodle features/resources. The final 45 minutes will provide training on a specific learning experience or tool.

Moodle Showcase 2020-21

Faculty, if you haven’t already noticed it, there is a new course on your Moodle 2020-21 Dashboard entitled Moodle Showcase. This course contains exemplary samples of your colleagues’ Moodle courses. The site showcases the use of images by James Vela-McConnell, an Online Group Presentation Assignment by Christina Erickson, VoiceThread LTI (integrated VT) by Kris McHale and Susan Loushin, H5P Interactive Videos by Lynda Enright, Activity Completion by Henry Yoon, and the Moodle Lesson by Phyllis Kapetanakis. Make sure you explore this site for ideas as you plan your own courses for the Fall.

COVID-19 Database in Library

Lindell Library’s HeinOnline database just added a collection of governmental and scholarly articles on the COVID-19 pandemic, titled “COVID-19 in America: Response, Issues, and Law”. With this resource, you can:

Find factual information about how COVID-19 has impacted public health, economics, society, and the world;

Peruse hundreds of Congressional Research Service (CRS) and Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports on the various ways COVID-19 has impacted every aspect of life, from testing issues in the medical field to unemployment and economic impact; and

Discover a curated list of relevant scholarly articles and external links to supplement their research.

These reports provide insight into federal response to the pandemic, discussing not only those issues that are highly prevalent in the media (e.g., vaccine development), but also less publicized topics such as the pandemic’s effect on organ donation and transplantation, support for the homeless, and more.

URGO Academic-Year Research Application Available

Each year URGO offers $1,325 research grants for undergraduates who wish to gain research experience with an Augsburg faculty member. These grants require 100 hours of research over the course of the academic year and are a great way to ease into research or to continue work on an existing project.

Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so student-faculty research teams are encouraged to submit proposals in the fall. The URGO Advisory Committee meets bi-monthly and will begin reviewing proposals September 14th.

URGO On-Campus Research

URGO Federal Work-Study Research Pilot Program

This is a pilot program supporting undergraduate research students through federal work-study funds. We are limiting the number of student researchers supported during the 20-21 academic year to 12 students and funding will be determined by a first-come, first-serve basis. Faculty from any discipline who need assistance with their research from a student are invited to participate in the pilot. An individual faculty member may propose only one student position who will work 5-20 hours per week and no more than their federal work-study allotment. During the 20-21 academic year, the research projects must follow Augsburg’s guidelines regarding Covid-19.

Please note that the student eligibility for federal work-study and the total number of hours must be confirmed by Human Resources after you complete this form. Open until all 12 positions are filled.

If the student will work 100 hours or less total, we recommend applying instead for the URGO Academic Year research grant.

This fall 2020 the student graphic design studio, Design & Agency (designandagency.com) at Augsburg University will have room to welcome five new non-profit, community, and/or BIPOC-owned organizations for a brand, or event, identity design project.
